So Protectors of Paradise was formed by Micah and other west side residents who wanted to stop the illegal dumping to keep their beach safe and pristine. But as fast as they could remove the trash, more appeared. So what did they do? Yet, the history of Aotearoa has been marked by repeated failures of New Zealandʻs colonial government to honor those promises. Because itʻs similar to what happened to kanaka maoli here in Hawaii, a delegation of Ka Lāhui Hawaii members travelled to Aotearoa to learn how the Maori are responding,” states Free Hawaii News co-host Leon Siu.

“Also on the March Free Hawaii News we take on a current popular saying that Las Vegas is our ninth island. Hawaiian Nationals Living In Hawaii

Watching the U.S. battle over the questions of illegal immigrants and who gets to vote makes me think of the battle that’s been raging here for many years involving Hawaiian nationals, those who identify as Hawaiian Kingdom subjects and live under the laws of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Basically, those who take to heart, “We are not Americans…We are Hawaiians.”

The U.S. Federal Government and the State of Hawaiʻi policies deal harshly with Hawaiian nationals, arresting and forcibly dragging them into courts on false charges, convicting and ordering them to pay steep fines and/or serve inordinately severe jail sentences. Some Hawaiian nationals have been incarcerated for months and even years without formal charges or trials, essentially being held as political prisoners. The court systems of the occupying governments have inflicted financial ruin, vilification, abuse, psychological and even physical torture upon Hawaiian nationals.

State and federal judges ignore their own laws with impunity, dismissing legal motions, affidavits, interrogatories and even habeas corpus filings by Hawaiian nationals, thus specifically depriving Hawaiians of due process and basic constitutional protections that are otherwise afforded to even the worst criminal offenders, foreign or domestic.

To avoid persecution, Hawaiian nationals living in the Hawaiian Islands have had to exist furtively on the fringes of society, living covertly ‘below the radar’ of the hostile gaze of the occupier’s law enforcement and judicial systems.

The hostility of the U.S. and “State of Hawaiʻi” toward Hawaiians who are not Americans makes it difficult for nationals to conduct many everyday activities. Driving a vehicle, opening a bank account, purchasing or renting a home or car, etc. are very difficult for Hawaiian nationals. Common services available to foreign nationals like Japanese, Canadians, Brits, etc., are denied to Hawaiian nationals, living in their own country — unless they identify themselves as U.S. citizens.

Ironically, while Hawaiian nationals are denied equal treatment and forced to work around the barriers of the illegal occupier, the “State of Hawaiʻi” considers itself a “sanctuary state” for undocumented immigrants. Thus, in our homeland, Hawaiian nationals are treated worse than illegal aliens

That is why this month, a resolution is being introduced at the state legislature, Acknowledging Hawaiian nationals as a lawful people residing in the Hawaiian Islands. The purpose of the resolution is to inform state law enforcement, judges and other officials that according to their own laws, Hawaiian nationals have the same civil rights as others in Hawaii and that punitive actions against Hawaiian nationals constitute discrimination on the basis of national origin, which is prohibited by both State and Federal laws. Hopefully, this will stop the discriminatory persecution of Hawaiian nationals.

Living as a Hawaiian national in Hawaiʻi is not easy, yet those who assert their Hawaiian nationality continue to assert their rights with the expectation that eventually, justice will prevail and freedom for Hawaiian nationals will return to our island nation.

Introducing Hawaii

His Excellency Leon Kaulahao Siu is the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands (Ke Aupuni Hawaii Ko Hawaii Pae Aina), also known as the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Minister Siu has been a frequent representative of the Hawaiian Kingdom as an invited Observer to the Meetings of the Polynesian Leaders Group, since 2018, when the Polynesian states of Hawaii, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Rapanui (Easter Island) were admitted as Observer Members of the PLG.

Foreign Minister Siu is from the tiny fishing village of Miloliʻi on the island of Hawaiʻi. He has a diverse background in native arts, fine arts and media. He is an accomplished visual artist, musician, vocalist, recording artist, composer, poet, author, producer and director of audio, film and video. He is known for his work in cross-disciplined, cross-cultural, multi-arts projects.

Mr. Siu is the only Hawaiian to have a composition recorded by the prestigious London Symphony Orchestra. He has composed soundtrack music for award-winning documentary films, including the 1977 National Geographic film, The Voyage of the Hōkūleʻa, a Polynesian voyaging canoe that 40 years later, circumnavigated the globe to emphasize the need to care for Planet Earth. Mr. Siu has created numerous recordings in a variety of musical genres. He remains active in producing audio and video recordings and performing in various venues throughout the Hawaiian Islands and occasionally abroad.

Mr. Siu is one of the leaders involved in a spiritual and cultural revival among Hawaiians. As an extension of that, he is also an overseer of global spiritual gatherings that serve to affirm in indigenous peoples around the world the beauty, grace, strength and purposes of the Creator within native traditions and cultures.
Mr. Siu is an astute political analyst, strategist and activist and has received several awards and recognition for his work in affecting public policy. He is engaged in communicating the message of liberation for Hawaii to the United Nations, the European Union and other international bodies, raising awareness of the continuity of the Hawaiian Kingdom throughout the global community.

Mr. Siu is a popular speaker at colleges, seminars, conferences, community gatherings, webinars, podcasts and other platforms on topics ranging from, ancient and modern Hawaiian history and culture, to American pop culture, to the arts, to current events and local and international politics. He has a notable presence in print and a wide range of electronic media in Hawaii and internationally.

Minister Siu is the co-author (along with Prof. Dr. h.c. Mehmet Sükrü Güzel) of the expositional book, Modus Vivendi Situation of West Papua (2018). Mr. Siu also served as editor for the seminal books, Perpetuated in Righteousness by Dr. Daniel K. Kikawa and Hawaii the Fake State; A Nation in Captivity (2008), by the late Aran A. Ardaiz.

The Hawaiian Kingdom is in the process of being restored as a
sovereign, independent country. As it’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Siuʻs
duties are: to raise international visibility for the Hawaiian Kingdom; to facilitate the normalization and resumption of diplomatic relations; and to engage in matters of mutual interests and concerns. Minister Siu is a strategist and proponent for self-determination and for ending all forms of colonialism.

He has led the Hawaiian Kingdom’s engagement in global dialogs on sustainability, sea level rise, demilitarization and the banning of nuclear weapons. He participated in international conferences at Columbia University on the threat to national sovereignty due to sea-level rise and the reunification of the Korean Peninsula. He is also involved in discussions on development, economic, environmental and security issues in the Pacific with various regional organizations such as the Melanesian Spearhead Group, the Pacific Islands Development Forum, the Polynesian Leaders Group and the Pacific Islands Forum.

Minister Siu was nominated for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for his collaborative work in advocacy of independence for West Papua. Also in 2017, he was a recipient of the Decree of Consecration Diploma and Gold Medal UN Peacemaker Sergio Vieira de Mello Award (Brazil). In 2015 he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Kamehameha for meritorious work in representing the Hawaiian Kingdom in international affairs.

“What Happened to Hawaii” at the Superbowl

It was not just a mention of “Hawaii”, but a reference to “what happened to Hawaii”. To English-speaking viewers, the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show looked like a joyful, high-energy performance. Not being Spanish speakers, we didn’t know until later that Ricky Martin’s performance of Bad Bunny’s song, “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii” (What Happened to Hawaii) was a direct warning for Puerto Rico to be careful with their future, so “what happened to Hawaii” doesn’t happen to Puerto Rico.

Here is a translation of the chorus.
They want to take my river and my beach too They want my neighborhood and grandma to leave No, don't let go of the flag nor forget the lelolai 'Cause I don't want them to do to you what happened to Hawaii.

The word, lelolai refers to a traditional Puerto Rican musical vocal technique, often used in jíbaro (folk) music. It acts as a symbol of cultural identity, pride, and resistance, with the lyric "no olvides el lelolai" urging Puerto Ricans to maintain their heritage and resist assimilation, similar to the Hawaiian concept of ea (sovereignty).

One of our main challenges is “invisibility”. We think because we’ve been immersed in restoring Hawaii’s sovereignty the last 30-40 years, that the rest of world knows what we’re talking about. Well, they really don’t.

Most people have never heard that there is an active independence movement in Hawaii. In fact, only a relatively small number of people here in Hawaii (including Kanaka Maoli) have seriously thought about it.

Most people around the world have no clue that there really is a problem with Hawaii being a State of the United States. And those who know there is a problem, think there’s no way to fix it.

The main challenge facing us is that most people can’t see us… and those that do, have a distorted view. Through decades of false narratives, the US has successfully kept our nation hidden in plain sight by giving the world a counterfeit image of who we are… friendly, docile, contented people living in paradise.

People who have gotten used to seeing us in a certain way need to begin seeing us in a different way. We need to set the record straight and recalibrate our image and our future.

Not only did Bad Bunny put Puerto Rican independence in front of 128.2 million viewers, he also put what happened to Hawaii in front of 128.2 million viewers. Now that’s exposure!

This is how we reach the masses. Not through more scholarly studies or court briefs; not through plodding documentaries, but through the popular media. It’s time to show and tell our story to the nations!
