Q&A: KEEPING YOUNGER SIBLINGS OCCUPIED

"Do you have tips for keeping younger siblings occupied while you are working with your older children?"

When I first had to deal with this situation, we were foster parents and had added three children to our family within the span of 3 days. We went from a family with 2 children ages 11 and 7, to a family with 5 children ages 11, 7, 4, and twin babies who were 8 months old. Needless to say, we took a few weeks off to get the hang of our new life.

As God would have it, we were able to adopt those very precious children. I began to master the "Short Burst" teaching theory. That is, I would let the older boys do their work until they had a question. When they came to a section or chapter where a teaching lesson was necessary, we would hold said lesson during the twins' nap times or later in the evening when the twins went to bed.

As the littles got a bit older, that is to say, old enough to keep things out of their mouth...I began buying tape! Lots of glue, tape and safe craft supplies. I had a basket of crafty things sitting out for the boys to use whenever they wanted. I even gave the twins whole rolls of tape... bought from the dollar store in bulk....to tape the snot out of their rooms while I got things done with our older children.

Sometimes they would write on their bedroom walls with markers and spill glue on their floors, and that was fine. So what if their walls were artsy, crazy looking. Friends who love us don't care and people who care will just have to get over it. I'm busy teaching.

Sometimes, I'd walk into their room and find a maze of tape from door knobs to curtain rods to bed posts. It was fun to see what they would do with the "stuff" and gave me just enough time to throw in a lesson when the need arose. However, this only works for a short while because eventually everything that can be taped and glued is taped and glued. They lose interest in writing on their walls because it didn't bother me and they would again be running around the house whining and otherwise reaking havoc trying to gain moms undivided attention. So, other ideas must be implemented.

As time went along, I began teaching the "big" things while the younger kids were napping. Again, once our kids are old enough to read, we can allow them to do much of their work on their own; But for the moments when we really need to "teach" in order to introduce new concepts or drive a point home, this is the time to take advantage of naps or grandma's offer to take the younger crew to her house once or twice a week.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help from family and friends or even paying a teenager to come over for an hour or two per week to babysit the littles, so that we can introduce those topics that need our undivided attention.

When and if all that fails, I found that taking a break was the answer. Sometimes we just need a school holiday to regroup, re-plan and rejuvenate. All of that is A-Okay! Why? The answer lay in the homeschooling vs. Traditional Schooling Equation.

There are 180 school days in the average school for traditionally educated students. Multiply that by 12 years and we total 2160 days of schooling for traditional schools. Homeschooled children are in their learning environment 365 days a year. So let's divide their limited 2160 days by 365 days per year. That equals 5.9 years of schooling! That's it! We need to accomplish 5.9 years of schooling from birth to age 18!

So RELAX! Enjoy the time with your little ones, get as much done as you reasonably can, and KNOW that you have plenty of time. Taking time to smell the roses IS an option. Take a week off or two or a month if you need that time. Think about altering the school week to include 3 or 4 days of instruction with 1 or 2 days off per week. Maybe school every other day through the year!

WE have ALL the power! There is no reason to stress ourselves or beat ourselves into the ground when family life is hectic. Our time is precious to our family. WE bought the curriculum, we Rule the curriculum. It does NOT rule us. If we use it all, great...if we don't, that's our prerogative. Relax, take a break and enjoy the kids that God has given us because they grow up SO fast. Time is fleeting...we need to catch it while we can.

The Math System comes with the tools needed to do the work in the books, including a pouch with a zipper to hold the gear. The covers are not childish, so if a seventh grader is at the third grade level, they won't be embarrassed or humiliated to use the books. Each book takes about a month or two to complete, depending on the student. "Learn Math Fast" is a Math Curriculum that is made to direct a person's education in a quick, sequential manner with direct, to-the-point results.

I have been using the "70 Meals One Trip to the Store" cookbook for 1 1/2 years. I was excited to get the book because it details a twice per year and once a week grocery list that simplifies my life by allowing me to make ANY recipe from the book! I can have the kids or my hubby pick the meals they want for the week and I know I'll have the stuff to make all of them! Oh What Joy!

My goal was to learn to make some good home-cooked meals, begin using an easy grocery list and save money on our grocery budget, all at the same time. How did it pan out? Perfectly!

The recipes are easy and tasty. The Kitchen Sink Meatloaf, Buttered Noodles and Fried Chicken are total family favorites. The Grocery List is spelled out in the book. I typed up and printed the "Twice a Year" list and "Weekly" lists. They are kept folded in my purse for easy access when I get the urge to do some quick grocery shopping.

The neat thing about this is that I KNOW I can pick any recipe from the book and have ALL of the items in our kitchen to prepare the meal. Any meal...Any Time!

My husband likes the fact that we can basically plan our grocery budget without fail. It's neat, tidy and cost effective. Add to that the fact that we are eating at home more often, taking lunches to work and our fast food days are nil to none and...well...we've saved a boat-load of money this past year! We are learning to eat at home, spend time together and stop eating fast food at the drop of a hat! Whoot!

The book is a success for our family. It's OFFICIALLY a staple in our home! Thank you Kelly Donlea for all of your hard work!

Over the years of teaching my children I've noticed that lectures are a tricky situation. On one hand, the kids need to know how to sit still, listen and take notes; On the other, it's not exactly the best way to be sure they fully comprehend the material. Let's face it. We're not all knitters, crocheters or carpenters. Most of us don't have the know-how or time to make a gift for everyone on our Christmas list....and even if we do, are we making something they really want?? That is the question.

1. HAIR CUTS: Everyone...Yes EVERYONE... gets their hair cut. Gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber shop are welcome items in any household. If you can find out where they regularly shop for cuts, even better.

I recently sought out one of my favorite companies, Timberdoodle, in the hope that I would be able to blog for them. I only blog for companies I like and respect; And this one was at the top of my list.

As a Lucky Member of the Timberdoodle Blog Team, my 6 year old daughter, Jaibrian, and I were given a Doodle Book to "play" with and review. The Doodle Farm book is chock-full of farm scene pages that happen to be unfinished. As children begin to read the books, they are surprised to see that they have to help finish the project!

Jaibrian began "fixing" the pages to "help" the publisher. She listened to me read the little facts and tidbits about that particular area of the farm, and an explanation of what she needed to draw to complete the picture.

Jaibrian thought this was best thing since sliced bread. She soaked it right up...as you will see in the video at the end of this post. She did 3 scenes in one day and promptly brought the book back to me, early Saturday morning, so I could read to her while she drew more scenes. She is a giggling, precious bundle of joy when this book is in her hands.

I like the interesting farm facts and playful way the information is molded into each lesson. Children can doodle the various animals at the farm, the crops that the farmer grows, help the farmer herd the sheep, put the horns on the bull, and so on...All the while, they don't know they are learning....be we do! :o)

There are more than 100 lively illustrations and that means every page is an easy-to-make lesson at our fingertips. Children using Doodle Books need no drawing skills, as the books are designed to pique their creativity and encourage them to learn to draw, trace and make likenesses.

Did you know that last month was the month of The Holy Rosary? I didn't. As some of you know, we are recent Catholic Converts. Sequencing gives a person the ability to put together patterns purposefully. It is an important skill not ONLY for reading but for understanding what has been read.If children can put a series of sequences together, they can begin to process the task of reading.

In order to read a person must first register a letter shape, then the sound that corresponds with that shape. After that is accomplished, another letter must be recognized, sounded out and so on.

When all of that mental agility has taken place, the letters must then be blended together in order to interpret a word and even more sequencing is needed to comprehend what the word means.

Two of my children have processing delays.

Rarely does a curriculum come along that caters equally to those with special needs and those who are advanced learners. It is rarer still to find one that can be used by children as well as adults, without causing one or the other to feel overworked or demeaned. It is SO rare, that I have found only one in all of the years that I’ve been a home educator.

The AVKO (Audio, Visual, Kinesthetic, Oral) Dyslexia Research Foundation distributes educational materials designed to help dyslexic children and other struggling learners. Because of the family members in my life who struggle with learning disabilities, I’ve been grateful to be one of the thousands of parents who use AVKO products. Spelling is a dirty word in many households. There is something about that subject that strikes fear into the hearts of students....and some parents! That is the case in our home, for sure. I used to be a terrible speller and can relate entirely to my children who struggle with it. For this reason, I am constantly looking for new, fun ways to help my kids practice.

Our spelling lists are comprised of their regular spelling course work and the words they misspell in their essays. After I finish grading their written work, I am usually left "holding" a few words that they have misspelled. I collect them, dust off them off and just like that...SNAP....the chore of doling out the spelling practice is in my hands. Great...not.

The hunt for new ways to practice spelling never ends. I like to mix-up the spelling practice so that there are a few options to choose. This keeps the work fresh and their minds from becoming numb to the process. The chore for me, however, is finding those new solutions.

Spelling Made Simple has recently become one of those options in our household. This software program has come to their rescue...and mine. I no longer have to dole out hand-cramping spelling assignments. I no longer have handwritten lists floating around my desk or spreadsheets to flip through. The software takes all of that, condenses it and becomes a running log of our homeschool spelling lists and work. As thousands of people have discovered this year, Khan Academy is amazing for teaching people math! We have been using it with all of our children and have been very impressed with the results. The quick momentum, easy, relaxed environment, and ability for kids to learn at their own pace is a HUGE blessing; However, I can't help but feel that there is something missing.

I see that our children are learning, but I believe there is something to be said for hands-on written work. I just couldn't get that feeling to abate. "Learn Math Fast Books" fit the bill for my wants and needs to perfection. The Math System comes with the tools needed to do the work in the books, including a pouch with a zipper to hold the gear. The covers are not childish, so if a seventh grader is at the third grade level, they won't be embarrassed or humiliated to use the books. Each book takes about a month or two to complete, depending on the student. "Learn Math Fast" is a Math Curriculum that is made to direct a person's education in a quick, sequential manner with direct, to the point results.

This 4 Volume series explains K-7 math with a different approach. Volume I teaches the student how to master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division before advancing to fractions. Volume II starts with fractions. You could call this 4th grade math, but they call it the key to learning the relationship between fractions, percentages, and decimal numbers. Once a student masters the first two books, she/he will have all the tools necessary to start learning pre algebra.

This system is working for those who never thought they could learn math. The language used can be read by most students, allowing them to teach themselves. What I like about the books is that the website complements the books. There are extra worksheets that can be printed if more practice is needed, and placement tests we can use to fit our children into the correct chapter/book. The books can be consumable or non-consumable. For example, I have my children write the problems and answers on separate sheets of paper so the books can be used by our younger children when they are ready.

One interested tidbit about this curriculum is that we are not left swinging in the wind if we, as parents, just cannot figure the stuff out. We can contact JK Mergens anytime with questions or help! During the course of raising our six children, and eight years of foster parenting, I have noticed a distinct inconsistency in a child's ability to follow simple oral directions. As a preschooler, they may listen to one simple command and do it well, while at the age of 8, they may not follow directions even if I explain them twice, draw a map, light the path with a spotlight and display fireworks at the destination.

Thankfully, I’ve come to understand that this is a common issue for children ages PreK-5^th grades… (and beyond.) But, how do we, as parents and educators, help our children learn the listening skills they need without losing our parental minds in the process? THAT is the question.

We are currently home educating 2 children and have allowed 3 of our children to go to a private school this year. I was pleasantly surprised to know that the oral listening skills debacle is so common that Vinzes’ 5^th grade teacher gave the class a little, 3 minute test to see how many of the 24 children would follow ORAL directions.

Mrs. Z made it very clear, Orally, over and over, that the children were to read the directions before they do any work on the test. As Vinze read the directions, he noticed kids punching holes in their papers, writing words at the top and bottom, just as the directions were telling them to do, and a few girls even yelled out their names very loudly, just as question number 5 asked them to do. Vinze read and read until he got to question number 10, which stated; “Do not do any of the questions. Put your name on the top, right corner of the paper and then sit quietly with your hands folded on your desk.” That is exactly what Vinze did.

Only 4 children out of 24 followed the teacher’s Repeated ORAL instructions!

We began our journey with homeschooling when our first born son was in second grade. There were circumstances that had occurred, during public school, that pushed my husband and I to journey outside our comfort zone and into the world of home education.

This was not a well thought out plan. It was not a burden on my heart. It was a need; an absolute, have-to-do-it for our child's best interest kind of need. God had a way of propelling our lives in a direction we would never have imagined...and we are so glad He did.

Our story is not unique. I've come to understand that there are many different reasons for a family to choose home education. Some parents plan it from the start, others warm up to the idea gradually, and others sort of fall into the atmosphere due to events that are out of their control. Whatever the reason for the choice, each and every story ranges from interesting, at the very least, to entirely shocking; and I Like to hear every single one!

THIS is the reason I have enjoyed reading the book "Stories From The Homeschool Heart." This book details many paths that families have taken as home educators. Some stories are funny; some inspirational and some are just plain amazing. I recognized myself in some of the articles and friends of mine in others.

This book has boosted my emotions and helped me understand, yet again, that I am not alone. It is an ever present, handy little go-to voice when I need encouragement. I've only to turn the pages to know that I am part of a loving group of people; strong, precious people. We exist in our home as one family, but rally in our hearts with all homeschooling families as a united people. That knowledge spurs us on to maintain the daily grind. It is a reminder that we walk in the steps of many, day in and day out....no matter what happens in our homeschooling lives. This book proclaims the mantra that holds me up, guides me and helps me gather our family together in a more joyful way. While I glean wisdom from other's experiences, trials and triumphs; Page by page; story by story; I hear a comforting, small voice say...We. Are. Not. Alone.

Each year, while gathering curriculum information for our homeschool, I try to search for the latest and greatest subjects and techniques that are surfacing. I've found that keeping up with the times is well worth the effort for our household.

A few weeks ago, during my planning and research extravaganza, I came across a few Waldorf and Charter schools around the world that are teaching something called, "Handwork." I had no idea what that could possibly be, so I dug a little deeper. I was a little shocked, and pleasantly surprised, to find that the subject of "Handwork" is all about teaching Fine Motor Skills, Patience and Concentration.

The schools that have added the subject of "Handwork" to their curriculum are actually teaching their students to KNIT! As in...knitting a hat, ball, sweater...you know...Knit! (Can you believe that?) The schools are adding this curriculum as early as 1st Grade; some even teaching knitting before they teach writing or math!

The students who have been fortunate enough to participate in Handwork Class are writing better, testing better in math AND learning a useful new skill. Who knows how many hand-made Christmas presents will be handed TO grandmothers this year, instead of the other way around?

As I read more about Handwork Classes, I found myself smiling and even giggling a little bit. This is one of those rare subjects that makes me think of the old-timey, one room schoolhouse that my grandma loved so much. What better subject could I possibly bring into our home this year? None...no other would compare.

I don't know about you, but I think Handwork Class is quite the wonderful, exciting, idea! So... you know me...I had to try it with our youngest child, Jaibrian. She's 6 years old and about to enter 1st grade.

When Jaibrian began the program, I decided to allow her to watch the lessons first, then begin working with her hands when "reviewing" the video lessons. This worked like a charm.

One group of lessons are taught by a young boy. The boy does a fine job and repeats the processes enough times that the student can watch repeatedly in order to really grasp the concepts.

The other set of lessons are taught by an older woman who tells precious stories to a little boy and girl. Her stories are acted out in small cartoon segments that really help kids understand the process. It was interesting to see that there were actually three varying "ways" taught so that more than one learning style is accounted for in this DVD program.

These videos are quite effective. Jai sat mesmerized through all of them.

Jaibrian watched the Video lessons and first learned how to "Criss Cross Applesauce" to begin making basic stitches. Here is the video of part of her learning process.

She then practiced the basic Knit Stitch. The video for her first "row" is below. In the next few days she will learn to use the second needle to do the Purl Stitch that will be needed to Knit Her Toy Ball.

As we progress throughout the semester, she will make a Knitted Toy Ball, that is provided in the Knitting 4 Kids Kit, and a pot holder for her Grandma for Christmas.

CREATING HOMESCHOOL SPACE IN A SMALL HOME

Our small bathroom

We have a small-ish home. We are a family of 7, living in a 1,000 square foot ranch. We do have a semi-finished basement and lots of room for the kids to run outdoors, but, storage space is limited for Homeschooling Supplies and what-not. This is why I'm always on the lookout for ways to "create space" in our home.

A few years ago, I watched an episode of "Sell This House" and saw an awesome idea. The home owner could not figure out where to put her daily toiletries in her small bathroom. She had bought a few storage containers and placed them in her very small bathroom. The storage was adequate but the room was cluttered, annoying to walk into and just looked terrible.

SOLUTION...

The decorator used a heavy duty, plastic, shower curtain liner with pockets firmly attached to it! The host of the show took a thick shower curtain liner that is meant for shampoo and what-not for showers, turned it around to face away from the shower and presto there was space for hair brushes, pads, tampons, gel, toothbrushes, razors, mirrors, make-up etc...

Some may ask what this has to do with Homeschooling. Well, the hall closet space that I freed up by doing this little project is now used for the basket that holds our Homeschooling Art Supplies!

The host then placed another nicer shower curtain in front of the thick, plastic, pocketed, liner to hide all the toiletries! GENIUS!!

I copied the idea and I'm happy to say that the liner holds up wonderfully with all the junk we keep piling into the pockets.

You may also notice the glass "shelf" (it's actually two shelves side by side) near the ceiling in the picture. I bought one glass shelf and put it on the wall farthest away from the shower head. That shelf holds our shampoo, conditioner etc... I also bought two more glass shelves, put them up near the ceiling above the shower curtain (see picture to right) and decorated it with little what-nots. It made the bathroom look bigger because it draws the eye up to the ceiling, making the room feel bigger and look welcoming.

OUR HOMESCHOOL DAILY SCHEDULE

The list below is our most recent, handy-dandy school schedule. The list reminds me of those pretty "Back To School" commercials on television. It looks nice, but the reality is that nobody dances in the hallways with their new backpack glistening in professional lighting.

I'm posting an example of our homeschool schedule anyway, though I change the "boxes" often and the days flow a little less perfectly than a spreadsheet can portray. One day I may video our day just to show how imperfectly we accomplish this list.

Be that as it may, for those who like a little order now and then, this is how is "could" be done. :o)

HOW TO TEACH A CHILD TO READ

Many parents have asked me how a homeschooling parent can teach their child to read. The answers are plentiful but I can only tell our story.

I have developed a system in our home that has a pretty simple outline. If you are a blogging mom who has developed a system in your home, please feel free to blog about it and then post a comment and/or link to your blog in the comment section below. :-)

this is how we taught our children to read.

1. At around 2 years of age we bought the Leap Frog Letter Factory DVD.

By the time the kids had watched this DVD for a few weeks, they knew their letters and sounds. I was sick of the movie and the song, but they soaked it up like a sponge. :-)

Note: They stopped watching the DVD after a while, as 2 year olds do have a short attention span, but we carried the lessons into daily life by reading to them and pointing to letters in signs on buildings..like at the bank or grocery store...."What's that letter? What sound does it make?"

If they forgot a few letters they quickly remembered them again when we popped the video back into the DVD player at around 3 1/2 years of age.
Brisan remembered all of his letters and sounds again in a jiffy and I could tell that he felt the nostalgia as he recognized the movie. LOL

True! "MOM I remember that!"

2. At about 3 1/2 years of age we also introduced them to the Starfall website. It is Free, wonderful, keeps them entertained and a fun way to learn.

3. At around 4 1/2 we began using the Dolch Flash cards. I used to make them by printing them from this Free site, pasting the pages to construction paper and then cutting them out to make the cards. They were flimsy so I broke down and bought them from Super Duper Publications.

That was before I bought my handy-dandy Laminating Machine! Now I'm a laminating queen! I laminate everything from letters to placemats to math flash cards! :o)

4. As they got more comfortable with letter sounds, I began reading them the Bob Books. I found them at our local library and then found them, for a steal, at Costco so I bought the whole set. They are fun early readers for kids that help them take off on their reading adventure.

The Dolch Sight Words Flashcards were a must for us to help them have a nice, firm basis for reading. After they began sounding out words, the process basically took on a life of it's own. All we had to do was be sure to have enough early reader books laying around, for the kids to grab, as they started to enjoy the freedom of reading independently.

That's about it. That's how we taught our kids to read! :-) How did you do it?
