Windows Media Player 12

2009-08-11T18:28:00.000-07:00

Windows Media Player 12 is the latest version of Microsoft's official media player, which comes bundled with Windows 7. The different from version 11 are some slight changes in design but if you haven't used Windows Media Player for a while, you'll be surprised to find a full multimedia suite.

Windows Media Player 12 maintains the same design of the previous version, featuring only small changes in color and toolbar layout. The program now makes a clear difference between the Library mode and the Now Playing mode, where you can see the currently active song, video or playlist, along with visualization effects.

The Media Guide in Windows Media Player 12 is Microsoft's equivalent to the Apple Store. This feature leads you to a variety of online store to buy music, but bear in mind that the number of available stores depends on your country. The Media Guide button also gives you access to dozens of online radio stations. One thing that Windows Media Player 12 is still missing though is support for podcasts.

Menus in Windows Media Player 12 have been reduced to the minimum, meaning that some commands are hidden and you'll have to hit the Alt key to show them. You can use the left pane to browse the different categories in your media library and the center area displays whatever item is currently selected or playing. On the right side, three buttons placed in the upper area enable you to create lists for playing, burning and syncing respectively.

I started using Flycast and was instantly impress with the huge selection of programming. You get music, talk, news, sports, weather, traffic and even some special broadcast of events. I can just use flycast even when I'm outside the country.

I'm happy to say Flycast's selections are huge you can get all kinds of genres from rock, alternative, country, classical and much more. In terms of quality its comparable using WIFI you get uninterruptible Internet radio. Using your own carrier all depends on the strenght of the signal.

Overall Flycast is a great service and a welcome to all blackberry users outside the US or even to International travellers.

Blackberry Streaming Radio Freeware

2009-08-08T19:22:00.000-07:00

I was really excited I could finally install it on my Blackberry. If you haven't experience Pandora its an Internet radio streaming service thats recommends music similar to yout choices of songs or artist you have chossen. Through this system you can create your own stations with Pandora making the playlist. It has a feedback button so you can improve its system of choosing songs. The whole concept of Pandora is so original there's no other service that comes close to it.

Installing the software is fast and the sound quality is good. You can use your wifi connection instead of your wireless carrier. Pandora for the Blackberry is quick, small and doesn't seem to slow down my phone. It currently does not support the Storm but that should change soon.

Blackberry Application Loader Freeware

2009-08-08T19:18:00.000-07:00

Blackberry just release Blackberry App World. You can now easily install applications or software straight from your Blackberry phone. This includes purchasing paid applications from your phone and some free ones. All payments are processed by Paypal, which I think is very smart since its easier to keep track of what you buy instead of being billed by your carrier in the end of the month.

Inside the app store you can write and read reviews of different applications. You can see what applications you have purchased as well as see what you have installed. Overall the Blackberry App World is what I expected it to be, RIM did a great job on the User Interface making it simple for any Blackberry owner to use. But there's one big concern I have on the initial roll out of Blackberry App World, right now its only available to certain regions ( USA, Canada and UK ). I know a lot of people are waiting around the world get this ( Germany, Spain, Australia). I hope in the comming weeks we'll get some news whens its available worldwide.

Winrar 3.80

2009-08-05T22:23:00.000-07:00

There are plenty of solid compression utilities to choose from, but this shareware powerhouse offers the features and ease of use that place it at the top of the compression category. WinRAR is easy to use, lightweight, and flexible.

Beyond its good looks and right-click readiness for basic compression and unzipping, WinRAR offers unpacking support for a large number of archive formats, including TAR, ACE, BZ2, JAR, ISO, and ZIP. WinRAR's advanced features are icing on the cake, with Unicode support for international formatting, embedded file comments, damaged archive repair, archive locking, self-extracting archives, and easy encryption. There's also the option to automatically delete temporary files and just-archived files. Anyone seeking an all-in-one archiving solution would be remiss to not check out WinRAR.

An intuitive interface lets you mouse over icons to see their functions, and if you don't like their candy-coated appearance, you can always choose from several themes at the developer's site. The Folder Tree Panel makes sifting through your directories to find files easier than ever. But once you see the size savings of a RAR archive, with a compression ratio of 8 percent to 15 percent better than the ZIP format, you'll understand why so many users and developers are making the switch from other apps. With virus scans now integrated and minor interface tweaks for Vista, only the slightly slower decompression speed holds the app back.
