Cambridge science has a long and esteemed history. The area is sometimes referred to as Silicon Fen because of the high level of science and technology businesses there. There are several science parks, for example St John's Innovation Centre and Cambridge Science Park.

Today’s drivers are more safety conscious than ever. With the popularity of SUVs, trucks, and larger vehicles, blind areas behind vehicles are an increasing problem. According to a recent survey, over one-fourth of all automotive accidents occur when a vehicle is in reverse. Echo-Location sonar now makes it affordable for drivers to have an added dimension of safety.

Ultrasonic and radar systems use sensors mounted in the rear bumper to determine the distance of objects or people from the vehicle. Audible signals (e.g., chimes) or visual signals (e.g., dash warning lights) indicate when an object has been detected. These signals may intensify (i.e., get louder or flash more rapidly) as the distance between the vehicle and the object or person narrows.

5 Simple Steps to Make Your Computer Run Faster

Chances are quite good you too can have this "WOW!" experience, assuming your Windows computer is spyware, adware, and virus-free. Here are 5 simple steps you can easily do yourself, or have your favorite IT person take care of for you - we hope they are a Nerd On Site, of course!

1. MSCONFIG

Ever since Windows 95, Microsoft has made it fairly easy to manage all the programs that automatically start up with your computer. If you are not sure which ones you do or do not need, it's safe to uncheck most or all of them and restart computer. Then selectively re-enable one at a time (and restart) to enable what you really need. Often there are programs in your PC for multi-function printers and other devices you may have had connected. Often, a majority of these programs are completely unnecessary, and take forever to boot up, wasting much of your precious time. To use this utility simply click Start, choose Run and type "msconfig" (without quotes) and select OK.

2. Free Up Disk Space

When it comes to our computers, most of us are guilty of being pack rats. We tend to horde files containing information we may never view again without realizing how much space these files actually take up. Once you have reached 85% of your hard drives capacity, the computer will take a turn for the worst in terms of performance. If you are past that 85% usage now, here are a few tips to get you below that percentage:

• Copy files to your USB drive first before deleting them off your PC. This always a safer bet to avoid accidentally deleting an important file.

• Replace your hard drive with a larger one. This is the easiest route if you want to avoid moving files around to external drives.

It used to be that defragmenting the drive increased the performance, but nowadays the speed after defragmenting is hardly recognizable.

Modern operating systems and file systems are much better at managing fragmentation.

Hard Drive manufacturers make it very easy to replace your hard drive by including software that allows you to completely clone your old hard drive to your new one. If you feel adventurous, you may be able to do this yourself, but certainly any IT professional can handle a task such as this very safely. The added benefit is that you now have an extra hard drive that can be used for backup purposes.

3. Keep a Clean Desktop

It's important to keep your desktop organized and free of clutter. If you have several files/icons covering the desktop of your computer you should create a file folder and store them away, burn them on a disk or move them to an external drive (then you can delete the original copies off your PC) as mentioned.

You will be amazed at how fast your computer starts up once you have no desktop clutter. The icons on the desktop actually take time to be retrieved and displayed, and this has to happen before your PC will allow any program to run.

4. Upgrade RAM, and RAM Memory Chips

If you are still chugging away at 512MB or 1GB of RAM, adding more RAM is cheaper than ever and can dramatically increase the startup time of your computer, and the speed at which all of your programs operate. In our experience, "WOW!" Reactions always tend to follow a RAM upgrade.

You can typically obtain RAM upgrades direct from the PC's manufacturer, although purchasing this way can be pricey. If you are not confident in installing RAM yourself, we recommend hiring an IT person. If you do attempt to install the RAM yourself, make sure that whatever memory you purchase is guaranteed to be compatible with your computer and that you are able to return it if it does not work. Some considerations to make when adding RAM:

• Will you be able to add it to the existing memory or will it be replacing the existing chip(s)?

• Does it require pairs of chips to be installed?

• What is the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed on your computer?
• Are you running a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system? 3-4GB are the maximum that 32-bit operating systems will recognize and/or be able to use.

In extreme cases where some specialists operate intensive database programs, such as simulations in health care research, maximizing on RAM and utilizing a 64-bit version of your operating system may allow you to run your databases in RAM instead of the hard drive.

If you spend a lot of time in front of your computer waiting, it may be worth consulting an expert to discuss how extra RAM can increase productivity dramatically for you.

5. A Clean Install of Microsoft Windows

Provided there are no technical problems with the computer, a clean install of Microsoft windows guarantees that the PC will run as fast as it did when it was new. The essential process for a clean install of windows is as follows:

• Make a complete backup of the entire computer.

• Ensure the backup is working and accessible.

• Re-install Microsoft Windows from scratch.

• Restore your programs and data.

Depending on the amount of programs and data you have on your PC, this process could take on average of 1-4 hours to complete. Nerds On Site recommends repeating this process every 6-12 months for your PC to run optimally.

Halloween Worldwide - Which Country Does Celebrate Halloween?

Halloween was originally a pagan holiday celebrated by Celtic people and born from the pagan holiday "Samhain".

Samhain is a holiday that celebrates the dark season of the Celtic year. Gallic people also celebrated this holiday; which was called "Samonios". Samonios has been replaced in Gallic countries by Christian celebrations.

Samhain was celebrated three days before and three days after November 1st and the origin of there was no carved pumpkin nor trick or treating. People had a lantern made out of a turnip. The celebration was strictly observed by the whole society and gave the opportunity to every barbarian to eat, drink and have fun.

Over the centuries, continental Europe converted to Christianity and abandoned Samonios in favour of All Saints Day and Samhain became All Hallow's Eve.

However, the Halloween that we currently celebrate has nothing in common with Samhain.

Halloween and All Saints Day are still interrelated because Halloween means "The Night Before the Feast of All Saints" and "All Hallow's Day" is our Continental All Saints Day.

All Hallow's Eve; which evolved during the Christianization of European populations, was imported in America by European colonists and the current Halloween holiday was created by the Irish emigrants.

In Belgium, two villages still celebrate Samonios (Samhain), born from All Saints Day, Grindin and Saint Gregory holidays. One of these villages is Gouy-Lez-Pieton. A friend of mine lives in Gouy and when I talk about Halloween, she says: "We did not replace Saint Nicholas holiday by Christmas so, we will not replace our All Saints Day and our Day Of The Dead by Halloween!" However, she agreed to organize a Halloween party with me next year.

Here are some countries which celebrate Halloween:

If some continental European countries adopted Halloween, this has not been without difficulty. Indeed, we consider this celebration being too "American Marketing" style. European people give more value to their culture and traditions than to commercial events.

Belgian people celebrate Halloween since more than ten years but Gouy-Lez-Pieton refuses to adopt it, preferring to celebrate their own Samhain-style holiday. Even if Belgian people organize a Day Before Christmas dinner, they still offer gifts to children on December 6th and not on December 25th. So, I doubt that my country will replace All Saints Day by Halloween.

On the other hand, Belgian people do not open their doors to unknown persons - including children - and we are not welcomed to ask for candies. By the way, many children are fighting in the streets to steal candy from others.

French people think that this holiday is too commercial and while this country finally adopted Halloween in the late 1990s, it is now less appreciated. There are very few children ringing at the doors and asking for sweets.

English people celebrate the Guy Fawkes Day on November 5th and adopted many customs from Samhain. These festivities are marked by torchlight parades where children use masks made from beets and pumpkins.

Scottish people practice their ancient pagan rites. Children wear costumes and cut scary faces into large rutabagas and place a candle inside them. They receive candy when they provide a nice entertainment to their neighbours.

Trick or treating originated in Ireland, so as usual, Irish children in disguise will enjoy the Halloween festivities, they will carry lanterns cut into large rutabagas. Children will be received by their neighbours with sweets and Irish houses will be decorated with Halloween lights.

Spanish people enjoy each kind of holidays and parties. Their kids will then enjoy receiving candies from their neighbours and adults will have the opportunity to have a Halloween party in each and every club. Spanish people also organize many Halloween parades.

Portugal does not celebrate Halloween; Portuguese people celebrate the Day of the Dead by organizing feasts at the cemetery.

Some regions of Italy
organize Halloween Events and it seems that the Italian children enjoy this holiday.

Other European cities and clubs organize commercial events for Halloween (mainly for tourists), newspapers publish articles dedicated to Halloween, but I am unsure that people really practice Halloween. There are very few information about Halloween festivities in Europe; especially Central and eastern Europe. They stick to their own All Saints Day and Day Of The Dead.

Australia and New Zealand
begin to enjoy Halloween.

USA, Canada, and Quebec: Halloween is very much appreciated and I think that only some worldwide disaster should prevent these people to celebrate Halloween.

Irish immigrants carried versions of these tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Traditional characters of Halloween include ghosts, witches, vampires, bats, black cats, goblins, skeletons, pumpkin-man, scarecrow and fictional figures such as Dracula. Halloween gifts often include one of these characters for the festivities.

It is hard to imagine a full blown recovery in housing until employment figures start to improve, but even that is not a definite indicator.

So, what should you do? Well, the answers are fairly obvious. Real estate will recover in the long term. It might take five to seven years, but values will bounce back up. If you are considering buying now, there has never been a better time. You can buy cheap and ride the appreciation freeway all the way up in a few years time. If you own now, just hold on baby! Values will turn around and you will get your equity back.

It can be brutally difficult to think long term in an economic crisis. When it comes to real estate, however, you must as there really is no other plausible choice.

Real estate agents are in the game of buying and selling homes. At their core, they are sales people and rightly so. Given this fact, you need to be very leery of any agent that offers legal advice. Why? They haven't got a clue and are potentially breaking the law.

You go to view a home and notice the owner has done a lot of custom work. You love it. The home is unique and amazingly so. You put in an offer through your real estate agent. After some haggling, a deal is reached. Escrow gets underway and then a problem arises. The appraiser notes the home has more square footage than recorded in the county records. It becomes obvious the owner did the customization without getting permits. It also becomes obvious that some of the work is not up to code.

At this point, the deal should either die or the seller should be offering major financial concessions. You are not really sure what to do. Your agent tells you to take the concessions. She has seen this before and knows that the building department will okay the home. If not, you can always come back and sue the owner for breach of warranty and contract. Taking this advice, you go ahead and buy the home.

After taking possession of the home, you are told by a building inspector half the home will need to be torn down and rebuilt to meet code. You are outrages and speak with an attorney about filing a lawsuit against the seller. The attorney looks at the deal, notes all the disclosure done by the seller and the concessions on price. Guess what, you have no legal remedy. Everything the agent told you is wrong.

This type of scenario plays out repeatedly. Real estate agents are famous for giving out legal advice regarding issues they have no business discussing. They are versed in the practice of selling and buying real estate, not offering legal opinions. To this end, more than a few real estate agents have been sued for "the unauthorized practice of law". In the scenario above, the buyer would in fact be able to sue the real estate agent and successfully so.

In truth, most real estate agents give legal advice without really thinking about it. They also do it without malice. They are just trying to make a sale. While they can incur liability for doing so, it is incumbent on you to realize that an agent is not a lawyer. If there are legal issues related to a real estate matter, you should speak with an attorney to get accurate advice. Otherwise, you are taking a huge risk.
