Troubled by a recurring dream featuring a host of strange creatures, nineteen-year-old Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) attends a party at a Victorian estate shortly after the death of her beloved father. She learns that the formal affair is actually an engagement party to eventually wed her into the Ascot family, who now owns her father's trading firm. Meanwhile, Alice begins seeing a white rabbit in a waistcoat running through the gardens. Unsure of how to reply to Hamish Ascot's proposal, Alice runs away and begins chasing after the rabbit, which leads to her falling into a rabbit hole. The hole transports her to a world called Underland, more specifically a small room with many doors. The only unlocked exit is a small doorway, causing Alice to use a series of potions in the room to shrink, become large, and shrink once again in order to escape. Upon exiting she is welcomed by a crowd of inhabitants including Nivens McTwisp the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), Mallymkun the Dormouse (Barbara Windsor), Uilleam the Dodo (Michael Gough), and Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas).

The group questions her identity as "the right Alice" and takes her to Absolem the Caterpillar (Alan Rickman), who consults a calendar like scroll known as the Oraculum, that details every day in Underland, eventually deciding she is "not hardly Alice," causing everyone believe that she is in fact "the wrong Alice." The calendar reveals that on the Frabjous Day, a hero named Alice will slay the Red Queen's guardian, the Jabberwocky, using the Vorpal Sword. The group is then ambushed by the Bandersnatch and a group of playing card soldiers lead by Ilosovic Stayne the Knave of Hearts (Crispin Glover), who captures the White Rabbit and the Dodo, along with the Tweedles who are carried away by the Jubjub bird. Alice is pursued by the Bandersnatch, but before it can attack, Mallymkun stops it by stabbing out and stealing it's eye, however it manages to scratch Alice's arm, leaving a wound.

The movie opens with Poseidon (Kevin McKidd) meeting up with Zeus (Sean Bean) on the top of the Empire State Building. Zeus comments that the storm clouds have no lightning and tells Poseidon that his master bolt has been stolen. Zeus blames Poseidon's son for the theft, though Poseidon claims his son does not even know anything of the gods and his identity, and gives Poseidon 14 days to return it or there would be war. Zeus then proceeds through the doorway to Olympus.

Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is introduced underwater holding his breath for seven minutes then emerging to a stunned Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), Percy's best friend. Percy goes back to his old apartment where his mother, Sally Jackson (Catherine Keener), is waiting for him. Sally lives with Percy's abusive stepfather, Gabe Ugliano (Joe Pantoliano). The next day, during a field trip to the Greek museum, a Fury disguised as Percy's substitute English teacher lures him away from the crowd. She attacks him, questioning him about the bolt. When Percy denies even hearing about one, she attacks. Before she can attack Percy further,Grover and Percy's Latin teacher, Mr Brunner (Pierce Brosnan), arrive and the Fury crashes out through a window. Mr Brunner orders Grover to take Percy to Camp Half-Blood, giving Percy the magical pen. Bewildered, Percy takes it anyway. They stop first at Percy's apartment to warn Sally. After knocking out Gabe, Percy, Grover and Sally take Gabe's car to Camp Half-Blood.

On the way there, Sally tells Percy about how his father was so charming and how he was forced to leave. The conversation is cut short when a cow is thrown into the the path of the car, effectively overturning it. When the car is flipped Grover reveals he is a satyr, a half human, half goat hybrid. He uses his hooves to break out of the car. They race to Half-Blood Hill on foot with the Minotaur on their tail. When they reach Camp Half-Blood's magical barrier, Grover and Percy go through, but the magical defences disallow Sally from entering. Now at the mercy of the Minotaur, Sally is picked up by the Minotaur, who proceeds to squeeze her. Sally turns into a shower of light and disappears. Percy attacks the Minotaur with Riptide. The sword falls out of reach to him, but he manages to kill the Minotaur with one of its horns. He passes out afterward from exhaustion.

The film takes place within a post-apocalyptic America, where a zombie apocalypse has been triggered when mad cow disease became mad human disease and then worse.

College student Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is on his way to Columbus, Ohio to see if his parents are still alive. He loses his car in an accident and encounters Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) who is on a quest to find Twinkies. They travel together and when they stop at a grocery store, they meet two sisters, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). The sisters con them into handing over their weapons and steal their vehicle. The two men walk and soon find a Hummer H2 truck loaded with weapons. They then meet the girls again, who attempt to take the truck, their vehicle having broken down. Columbus proposes a truce and suggests they travel together.

Columbus tells Wichita he is heading home to Columbus, Ohio but she blurts out that it has been burned to the ground and is overrun by zombies. He decides instead to stay with the group. Wichita tells Columbus that she is taking Little Rock to "Pacific Playland" in Los Angeles, an amusement park rumored to be zombie-free.

On the way to the park, they pass through Hollywood and Tallahassee decides to take them to Bill Murray's mansion. Tallahassee and Wichita meet Murray himself, uninfected but disguised as a zombie with make-up so that he can walk safely among the infected and play golf without being bothered. Little Rock is unfamiliar with Bill Murray so Columbus shows her the film Ghostbusters. Murray later enters in order to scare Columbus and Little Rock as a practical joke, but thinking he is a real zombie Columbus shoots and kills him.

The movie starts off with a montage of fights and stunts from Chan's older movies including The Tuxedo and Operation Condor and then cuts to Bob Ho (Chan) waking up. The next shot features his next-door neighbors waking up, with Gillian (Amber Valletta) and her three children, Nora (youngest one and very girlish; played by Alina Foley), Ian ('geeky' and intelligent, played by Will Shadley) and Farren (stereotypical teenager and the oldest, played by Madeline Carroll) all experiencing a normal morning. The family has three pets which consists of a pig, turtle and a cat.

Gillian strolls outside with her children to take the two older kids to school and Bob Ho, who supposedly works as a pen importer, spots her and helps her push down the trash can to the sidewalk. The two are shown to be romantic and the three kids are shown to be against it, due to them thinking he is nerdy and uninteresting. Later at night, Bob and Gillian are on a date celebrating their three month anniversary and although Bob tries to tell her that he's a CIA agent, his cellphone receives a message and he has to leave right away.

Frank Goode is getting ready for his children to come visit him. He gets everything all set, goes out and buys a new grill, expensive champagne, and gets the backyard and house all ready. One by one though, each of his children call to cancel on him. Feeling a bit down by the rejections, Frank decides to head out on a small trip, visiting each of his kids.

After visiting his physician and being warned about his health, Frank(Robert De Niro) takes a train to New York, where he sits on his son David's doorstep. David never shows up, but Frank sees one of David's paintings in a nearby art gallery window. He slips an envelope under David's door telling him how he wanted to surprise him but missed out.

Next visit is to daughter Amy (Kate Beckinsale), who says it's a bad time to visit. She had mentioned in her phone call that her son Jack was sick and they weren't going to make the visit. Once he gets there, Frank realizes Jack wasn't sick and Amy was just making up an excuse. Frank plays a little golf with grandson Jack, but dinner is uncomfortable with tension between Jack and his father. The next morning, Frank accompanies Amy to her fancy office and hears her agency's pitch for a TV ad. She takes him to the bus station to visit his son Robert. While waiting, Amy meets up with a co-worker of her's, having him and her father meet.

During the Chipmunks' benefit concert in Paris, Dave Seville (Jason Lee) suffers a severe injury, when Alvin (Justin Long) jumps on top of a scaffolding and a falling billboard sends Dave flying across the stage into some electric devices. After the accident, he is rushed to the hospital. Although he survives, he must stay for a few days to recover, so he leaves his lazy 21-year-old cousin Toby (Zachary Levi) and Aunt Jackie (Kathryn Joosten) in charge of the Chipmunks until he returns. Prior to the event, Dave had made arrangements for Alvin, Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler), and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) to go to school. But, at the airport, Aunt Jackie falls down some stairs and an airport luggage trolley crashes into her. She has to go to the hospital too, so Toby is left in charge. Little does Dave know, on their first day at school, the Chipmunks feel uncomfortable with all the bullies around, when Ryan, one of the bullies, gives Simon a swirlie. The boys have fun being babysat by Toby, mainly because he is basically a big kid himself. Theodore tries to bond with Toby but Toby is always either ignoring him or being short towards him.

Meanwhile, Ian Hawke (David Cross) the greedy soundtrack-editor now lives in the basement of Jett Records. But, a FedEx mail comes to the building and a package falls out. And, three singing female chipmunks, The Chipettes, Brittany (Christina Applegate), Jeanette (Anna Faris), and Eleanor (Amy Poehler) come out of the package, and introduce themselves. Brittany says that since Ian made the Chipmunks stars, they want to be stars too. So they sing "Put Your Records On" to make Ian adopt them. He does, telling them that the Chipmunks ran away from him, spat on him, and left him broken-hearted, to make the Chipettes not trust them. He lets the Chipettes stay in his apartment (in actuality, breaking into a model suite) and have their own dressing mirrors. Meanwhile, the Chipmunks enter the school concert to win $25,000 and save the school's music program. The tension between Alvin and Simon continues to build as Alvin hangs out with the jocks of the school, but the one who is most affected is Theodore who believes he is losing his brothers with them fighting all the time. The Chipmunks meet the Chipettes and fall in love, until they discover they're with Ian. The Chipettes sing "Hot N Cold" to get Dr. Rubin (Wendie Malick), the school principal to enter them in the contest. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes compete against each other in a Battle of the Bands. Alvin warns Brittany about what Ian did to him and his brothers, but she doesn't believe Alvin. Alvin then humiliates Simon in front of everyone when he tells one of the jocks to trick him into thinking he's now the school Litter Moniter and Simon ends up being thrown into the dumpster. Meanwhile, Ian gives Eleanor some platform shoes, telling her to "work on being taller." At the concert, the Chipettes sing "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Eager to get rich, Ian videotapes the Chipettes performance and posts it on YouTube, along with his phone number. The Chipettes win after Simon and Theodore forfeit the competition because Alvin failed to show up (he hung out with the football team instead). Finally, Alvin shows up only to see that everyone's gone. Brittany says to Alvin that he doesn't care about anyone but himself and that she never wanted to win the way Ian was making her. When Alvin returns home, Simon and Theodore pretend they're sleeping and ignore him. The embarrassment is too much for Theodore to take who runs away to the zoo, hoping to live with the meerkats, after seeing Meerkat Manor. When Toby and the boys find him and save him from an eagle, it brings out the best in all of them and the Chipmunks all forgive each other and go back to "One for all, and three for one". (As Theodore put it)

In A.D. 2045, the Planet Earth is in ecologic crisis as a consequence of pollution and overpopulation. Meanwhile, automated interplanetary missions have seeded Planet Mars with atmosphere-producing algae as the first stage in terraforming the planet. Twelve years later, when the oxygen quantity produced by the algae is inexplicably reduced, the crew of Mars-1 must learn why, and continue the mission of terraforming the red planet for human colonization.

En route to Mars, the crew get to know one another through discussions about science, spirituality, and religion. Quinn Burchenal, the geneticist (Tom Sizemore), is an agnostic. Aging scientist and surgeon Bud Chantillas (Terence Stamp) is philosophical, having come to believe long ago that "science could not answer any of the really interesting questions." Mechanical systems engineer and "space janitor" Robby Gallagher (Val Kilmer) acts as Chantillas's protégé, and flirts with the spaceship's beautiful, but no-nonsense commander, Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss). Also on board is arrogant pilot Ted Santen (Benjamin Bratt) and Pettengil (Simon Baker).

Soon the ship arrives to Mars orbit, but a solar flare disrupts key systems, complicates their orbit and forces Bowman (Moss) to remain aboard and repair them, while the others land. Their first goal is to locate an automated habitat established earlier on Mars to manufacture food and oxygen in preparation for the crew's arrival.

The landing craft is damaged entering the Martian atmosphere, veers off course, and crash-lands far from their landing zone near the habitat. In the process, they lose track of "AMEE", a military robot that is their "Mars surface navigator." Moreover, Chantillas was critically injured in the crash landing, and they have insufficient air to take him to the habitat where his ruptured spleen could be attended. With limited air, Chantillas tells them to leave him behind and complete the mission.

Jack Campbell is a single, wealthy Wall Street arbitrageur living the high life in New York City. He is surprised to see that his former girlfriend, Kate, tried to give him a call after many years, and wonders (consulting his mentor at the firm) whether to answer it the next day. That night, around Christmas, he walks into a convenience store and convinces an angry lottery contestant, known as "Cash", not to shoot the clerk. He offers to help Cash before going to sleep in his penthouse.

The next morning, on Christmas, he wakes up in a suburban New Jersey bedroom with Kate and two children. He hurries back to his office and condo, but not even his closest friends recognize him. He meets Cash, who is driving the Ferrari that Jack lost track of, and begins to explain to Jack that he is in an alternate universe in order to learn a lesson.

Jack realizes that he is living the life he could have had if he had not gone to London and become an investment banker but had stayed in the United States with his girlfriend. He instead has a modest family life, where he is a tire salesman and Kate is a non-profit lawyer. Jack struggles to fit into the role of a family man, making many serious blunders such as missing opening Christmas presents, flirting with a married woman, and forgetting his anniversary. Very soon, Jack's young "daughter" realizes his secret and decides to assist him in surviving his new life. He begins to succeed in his life, bonding with his "children," falling in love with his wife and working hard at his dull job.

He suddenly finds himself being offered a contract to work at the very same investment firm from his alternate life. There he meets his old mentor, who once again gladly offers him a job, and a former sycophant employee who is instead in Jack's old position, with an assertiveness he did not possess as a subordinate. While he is wowed by the potential salary and other complementary extreme luxuries, Kate convinces him to decline and spend time with his family.

Just as Jack is finally realizing the true value of his new life, his epiphany jolts him back to his wealthy —yet as he now realizes, lonely— former life. In desperation, he forgoes closing his $130 billion pharmaceutical acquisition deal to intercept Kate (who had left the message yesterday). He finds her moving out of a luxury townhouse - like Jack, she was also left to focus on her career and became a very wealthy lawyer, and only called him to give back some of his old possessions. Before she moves her business to Paris, he runs after her at the airport and describes the family they had in the alternate universe in an effort to get back together with her. Shocked but intrigued, she agrees to a cup of coffee at the airport, suggesting that they might have a future after all.

The film begins in Mexico, where police officer Javier Rodriguez (Benicio Del Toro) and his partner, Manolo Sanchez (Jacob Vargas), stop a drug transport and arrest the couriers. Their arrest is interrupted by General Salazar (Tomás Milián), a high-ranking Mexican official, who decides to hire Rodriguez. Salazar instructs him to locate and apprehend Francisco Flores (Clifton Collins, Jr.), a notorious hit man for the Tijuana Cartel, headed by the Obregón brothers.

Meanwhile, Robert Wakefield (Douglas), a conservative Ohio judge, is appointed to head the President's Office of National Drug Control, taking on the title drug czar. Wakefield is warned by his predecessor and several influential politicians that the War on Drugs is unwinnable. Unbeknownst to Wakefield, his honors student daughter, Caroline (Erika Christensen) has been using cocaine, and develops a drug addiction after her boyfriend Seth (Topher Grace) introduces her to smoking heroin. Caroline and Seth are arrested when a fellow student overdoses on drugs at a party and they unsuccessfully try to dump him anonymously at a nearby hospital. Robert finds out that his wife Barbara (Amy Irving) has known about their daughter's involvement with drugs for over six months.

A third story is set in San Diego, where an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigation led by Montel Gordon (Don Cheadle) and Ray Castro (Luis Guzmán) leads to arrest of Eduardo Ruiz (Miguel Ferrer), a high-stakes dealer posing as a fisherman. Ruiz, who is hospitalized as the result of a gunshot wound from the arrest, decides to risk the dangerous road to immunity by giving up his boss: drug lord Carlos Ayala (Steven Bauer), the biggest distributor for the Obregón brothers in the United States. Ayala is indicted by a tough prosecutor, hand-selected by Wakefield in an attempt to send a message to the Mexican drug organizations.

After Elliot is ditched at a bar while trying to talk to Alison, he says that he would give anything for Alison to be with him. Satan (Elizabeth Hurley), in the form of a beautiful woman, hears this wish and offers Elliot a contract. She will give Elliot seven wishes, and in return Elliot will give her his soul.

As might be expected of a bargain with Satan, there is a catch to the deal. No matter what Elliot asks for himself, Satan grants each of his wishes, but each time also giving him something he didn't ask for.

The movie begins with a peeper (Jon Lovitz) sitting in a tree spying on a single mom. He gets caught out by her son who in turn fires his slingshot at the guy who falls off the tree and then dies. He ends up in Hell as what he was doing is a sin. Also in Hell, it is the 10,000th year as the current Satan's rule of Hell. He brings his three sons—Adrian, Cassius, and Nicky—to decide who will succeed him as "Prince of Darkness". Adrian and Cassius constantly torment Nicky for being their father's personal favorite, even going as far as taking control of his mind and hitting him in the face with a shovel (resulting in a slacked jaw and a speech impediment). The Devil decides to rule another 10,000 years himself because there is more to being Satan than torturing sinful souls as much as keeping the balance between good and evil, saying that none of the sons are ready to take on that responsibility. This greatly angers Adrian and Cassius, so they decide to go to Earth and create a "New Hell" there, corrupting as many souls as possible so that when they kill the souls they will have an army of Damned Souls. They escape Hell and freeze the entrance, the Fire Gate, on the way out. When no new souls can get in, Satan begins to decompose. Satan sends Nicky to Earth with a silver flask that traps the drinker inside it forever. The only way to un-freeze the gate is to get Adrian and Cassius to return through the Fire Gate inside the flask.

Nicky goes to Earth and appears in the subway at Grand Central Terminal and meets "Mr. Beefy", a talking bulldog that is "an old friend" of Satan. He says that Adrian and Cassius can possess mortals so they will be hard to find. Nicky manages to get an apartment with Todd, a failed actor. Meanwhile, Adrian (possessing a powerful Deacon) and Cassius (possessing the Mayor of New York City) corrupt an entire mass, thus taking the first steps towards New Hell. Cassius makes the mayor even change the city's slogan to "I Love Hookers" and lower the legal drinking age to 10.

Dylan, Natalie, and Alex are three talented women currently at the employ of the unseen "Charlie", who gives them cases to investigate via a speaker in his offices, and backing them with support for disguises and equipment; Charlie is assisted by Bosley who helps the women directly when needed. They are assigned the case of the kidnapping of Eric Knox, a programmer and head of Knox Enterprises, supposedly by a company called Redstar for his voice tracking and identification system. The three women infiltrate a party held by Redstar's owner, Roger Corwin, and spot a thin man that was seen on the surveillance videos during Knox' kidnapping. They give chase, and eventually corner and fight the thin man, but he runs off; when the women follow, they discover Knox.

After reuniting Knox with his partner Vivian Wood, Knox implores them to help understand what Redstar would do with his software. The three manage to infiltrate Redstar's secure computer system and plant a device to allow them to explore the Redstar mainframe at their leisure. They leave the laptop with Bosley and consider the mission successful. The group relaxes for the night, with Dylan taking up an offer to spend the night with Knox. However, Dylan discovers that Knox had planned the events all along with help from the thin man and Vivian; by gaining access to Redstar's server, he is able to seek out the location of any voice that can be detected on it. Knox shoots at Dylan, believing to have killed her, though Dylan is able to escape unharmed. When she regroups with Natalie and Alex, she finds they have also been attacked but each escaped, that Corwin has been murdered, and that Charlie's offices have been blown up. They learn from a radio transmitter implanted in Bosley's teeth that he is unharmed, captured by Vivian before the explosion, and are able to use information to target his whereabouts.

When 11-year-old Trevor McKinney (Osment) begins seventh grade in Las Vegas, Nevada, his social studies teacher Eugene Simonet (Spacey) gives the class an assignment to devise and put into action a plan that will change the world for the better. Trevor calls his plan "pay it forward", which can be described as a charitable pyramid scheme, based on good deeds rather than profit. "Paying it forward" means the recipient of a favor does a favor for a third party rather than paying the favor back.

Trevor does a favor for three people, asking each of them to return the favor by doing favors for three other people, and so on, along a branching tree of good deeds. Trevor does his first good deed for a homeless man named Jerry (James Caviezel). This effort initially appears to be unsuccessful, but Jerry will pay his debt forward later in the film by talking a suicidal woman out of jumping off a bridge.

Meanwhile, Trevor's mother Arlene (Hunt) meets Eugene after discovering Jerry in their house and confronting Eugene about Trevor's project. Then Trevor selects Eugene as his next "pay it forward" target and tricks Eugene and Arlene into a romantic dinner date. This also appears to fail, but then Trevor and Arlene argue about her alcoholism and she slaps him in a fit of anger. The two adults are brought together again when Trevor runs away from home and Arlene asks Eugene to help her find him.

Trevor's school assignment marks the beginning of the story's chronology, but the opening scene in the film shows one of the later favors in the "pay it forward" tree, in which a man gives a car to Los Angeles journalist Chris Chandler (Jay Mohr). As the film proceeds, Chandler traces the chain of favors back to its origin in Trevor's school project. After her date with Eugene, Arlene paid Trevor's favor forward by forgiving her own mother Grace (Angie Dickinson) for her mistakes in raising Arlene, and Grace, who is homeless, helped a gang member escape from the police. This gang member then helped the daughter of the man who gave Chandler his new car.

Gaylord M. "Greg" Focker (Ben Stiller) is a nurse living in Chicago. He intends to propose to his girlfriend Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo), a schoolteacher. His plans are disrupted by the news that Pam's sister Debbie (Nicole DeHuff) is getting married and Greg and Pam are invited to spend the weekend before the wedding at Pam's parents' house in Oyster Bay, New York (on Long Island). Hoping to make the best of the situation, Greg now plans to propose to Pam in front of her family and brings the engagement ring he bought for Pam with him.

At the Byrnes family home, Greg meets Pam's father Jack (Robert De Niro), mother Dina (Blythe Danner) and their beloved cat Mr. Jinx. Jack takes an instant dislike towards Greg and, subtly at first but more openly as time goes by, criticizes Greg for his choice of career as a male nurse and anything else he sees as a difference between Greg and the Byrnes family. Greg's surname remains a running gag throughout the film as characters frequently refer to Greg by his surname only. Greg desperately tries to impress Jack but his efforts fail one by one. Greg presents the family with a bottle of cheap champagne he purchased at a local drug store; while trying to open the bottle, the cork flies out of the bottle and hits the urn containing the ashes of Jack's beloved mother, breaking the urn and spilling the ashes on the ground, which Mr. Jinx then uses as a litter box, upsetting Jack even further.

In 1971, at the old desegregated T. C. Williams High School, Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), also derogatorily known as Coach "Coon," is hired as head coach for the school's football team. He takes the place promised to former head coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton). Yoast at first refuses Boone's offer as the assistant head coach, but then changes his mind after his white players pledge to boycott if he doesn't coach, Ken Smithson(Fintan Ryan)leads the rebellion.

The black and white members of the football team clash in racially-motivated conflicts on a few occasions while at football camp but, after forceful coaxing and team building efforts by Coach Boone and Ken, the team achieves as well as success. Boone makes the camp quite rigorous; when the bus is leaving for the camp all members are instructed to wear a shirt and tie; anyone not doing so will watch the season and not compete. At the camp, anybody who displays any misconduct at practice is instructed to run a mile. One time during camp, Coach Boone wakes up the players at 3:00 am to run through the woods to end up at the Civil War battleground of Gettysburg where he delivers a stirring speech on why that war was fought ("the same fight we are still fighting amongst ourselves").

Child psychologist Catherine Deane (Lopez) is an expert in an experimental treatment for coma patients: a virtual reality device that allows her to enter into the minds of her patients and attempt to coax them into consciousness. When serial killer Carl Rudolph Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio) falls into a coma before the FBI can locate his final victim, Agent Novak (Vince Vaughn) persuades Deane to enter Stargher's mind and discover the victim's location.[1] As Deane enters Stargher's mind, his victim is trapped in a cell that slowly fills with water by means of an automatic timer.

Deane enters Stargher's twisted mind, where she is confronted by both the violent and innocent parts of the killer's psyche. The innocent half shows her the abuse he suffered at his father's hands, and the drowning of an injured bird as a mercy killing. Deane attempts to nurture the innocent side of Stargher's mind, but his murderous half thwarts her at every turn.

Despite Deane's best efforts, she becomes trapped in Stargher's dark dreamscape. Novak volunteers to enter Stargher's mind and attempts to rescue her. He breaks Deane from Stargher's hold and discovers clues to the whereabouts of his victim, Novak relates his revelations to his team and they are able to track down the location of Stargher's victim (Stargher had been entrusted by a company to take care of an advanced water pump, which he used to fill the cell with water). Novak discovers Stargher's secret underground room and saves Stargher's victim just in time. Meanwhile, Deane decides to reverse the process and pull Stargher's mind into her own. She presents Stargher's innocent side with a paradise, but his murderous side is always present, and manifests as a serpent. This time, however, Deane has all the power; she attacks the serpent-Stargher, but discovers that she cannot destroy one half without killing the other. Stargher's innocent side reminds her of the bird he drowned, and she kills him out of mercy. She adopts Stargher's dog, and successfully uses her new technique on her other coma patient.

In 1973, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), is a 15-year-old boy aspiring to be a rock journalist. Unfortunately for William, his mother, Elaine (Frances McDormand), is determined that William will be the country's youngest lawyer, and has skipped the 'predominantly advanced' boy a couple of grades in school and while at home, she thinks, she provides him the tools he needs to be a success. These 'tools' are of more value to him, she believes, than merely fitting in with a crowd. William rises up to the responsibility of using his intelligence, though not as his mother hopes. Shunned by his classmates (most of whom are two or three years older than he is), he writes for underground papers in his hometown of San Diego, sharing the love of rock and roll instilled in him through a farewell gift of music from his sister, Anita (Zooey Deschanel): albums left behind on the day that she escapes the home life which William must still endure.

He goes one morning to watch as a local radio station interviews pioneering rock journalist Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman). William has been sending Bangs copies of his work, and Bangs recognizes the talent of the boy. The two hit it off, and Bangs gives William a $35 assignment to write up a Black Sabbath concert. Lester advises William to be honest and unmerciful, but fails to mention how to get into the show or to meet the band. William, without credentials or a ticket, cannot get into the arena. He meets up with some semi-groupies who call themselves "Band-Aides": Estrella Starr (Bijou Phillips), Polexia Aphrodisia (Anna Paquin), Sapphire (Fairuza Balk), and their leader, Penny Lane (Kate Hudson). The Band-Aides gain entrance to the show, but William is still barred from entry as the opening band, Stillwater, arrives, running late. At first they dismiss him as a journalist, "the enemy", but when he calls them by their names and praises their most recent work in detail, they realize that he is a genuine fan and maneuver him backstage. There, in spite of his instincts, the band's "guitarist with mystique", Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) takes a liking to William, no doubt in part because of William's apparent friendship with Penny, and invites William to meet up with him and the band again.

Retired FBI Special Agent Joel Campbell (James Spader) lives in Chicago, where he is struggling to come to terms with his failure to capture a serial killer back when he was working in Los Angeles. Campbell attends therapy sessions with Dr. Polly Beilman (Marisa Tomei), but otherwise has no other friends or social life.

Campbell learns that a girl who lived in his apartment building has been killed. He does not pay it much attention until he opens his mail and finds that a picture of the girl had been sent to his apartment three days before the murder. He brings this information to the attention of the detective on the case, Det. Mackie (Chris Ellis), and comes to the conclusion that the same serial killer has arrived in Chicago. FBI Special Agent in Charge Ibby (Ernie Hudson) tries to persuade Campbell to return to the case, but he refuses.

One night Campbell receives a phone call from David Griffin (Keanu Reeves), the serial killer, who reveals that he followed Campbell to Chicago and wants to rebuild the "rapport" they once had. Griffin tells Campbell that he will send a photo of a girl in the morning, and Campbell has until 9:00 pm that night to find her. Campbell tells Ibby that he wants back in on the case, and his request is granted.

At a plush cocktail party at Reisner Institute, a government think tank based in Redmond, Washington, the guests and scientists present are enjoying themselves. One such scientist, Dylan, suddenly begins to become manipulated by an invisible force, which creates a scene to the guests and drags the scientist into the nearby bathroom and proceeds to brutally beat and throw Dylan around the room. Dylan apparently knows who it is, and begs the invisible man not to kill him, as he "doesn't have it", but the invisible man persists as he's "getting worse" and he's "running out of time". Though he does not know how to make more, Dylan mentions that another scientist, Maggie Dalton, knows the formula. Seemingly accepting this, the invisible man releases Dylan and tells him not to tell anyone he was here, to which he agrees. No sooner has he left, than Dylan attempts to call someone on his cell phone, but the invisible man, who only pretended to leave to see if Dylan would stay silent, smashes the phone on the ground, and slashes Dylan's neck with the broken faceplate, killing him.

The police arrive at the laboratory to conduct an investigation, but the military supervisor of the laboratory, Colonel Gavin Bishop, insists it is an internal military situation and the police have no jurisdiction over the crime, and refuses to relent even when one of the detectives, Frank Turner, points out that they have no experience conducting a proper criminal investigation.

Dr. Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon), a brilliant but megalomaniacal molecular biologist, works on an invisibility serum for the U.S. military. His current project is reversing the invisibility effect on his test subject, a female gorilla named Isabelle. Working late one night he solves the problem and is able to return the gorilla to the visible world. Although he works on the serum virtually non-stop, he still finds time to obsess about his ex-girlfriend Linda McKay (Elisabeth Shue), another scientist on his team, who, unbeknownst to Sebastian, has been dating Matt Kensington (Josh Brolin), yet another team member. Sebastian and his team, which also includes animal vets Sarah Kennedy (Kim Dickens) and Carter Abbey (Greg Grunberg) and technicians Frank Chase (Joey Slotnick) and Janice Walton (Mary Randle) eventually do figure out how to get the serum to work on animals, bringing the gorilla back to visibility. Afterwards, the team eagerly looks forward to obtaining clearance for clinical trials on humans. Instead of reporting his success to the military, Sebastian inexplicably lies to the oversight committee including Dr. Howard Kramer (William Devane), and decides to test the serum on himself. After some initial difficulties, the procedure is a success. Sebastian then goes through some lab tests. But when it comes time to bring him back to visibility after three days, the reversion fails.

In September 1991, the swordfishing boat Andrea Gail returns to port in Gloucester, Massachusetts with a poor catch. Desperate for money, Billy Tyne (the captain) convinces the Andrea Gail's crew to join him for one more late season fishing expedition. They head out past their usual fishing grounds, leaving a developing thunderstorm behind them. Initially unsuccessful, they head to the Flemish Cap, where their luck improves. At the height of their fishing the ice machine breaks; the only way to preserve their catch is to hurry back to shore. After debating whether to sail through the building storm or to wait it out, the crew decide to risk the storm. However, between the Andrea Gail and Gloucester is a confluence of two powerful weather fronts and a hurricane, which the crew of Andrea Gail underestimate. After repeated warnings from other ships, the Andrea Gail loses her antenna, forcing a fellow ship to call in a Mayday. An Air National Guard rescue helicopter responds, but after failing to perform a midair refuel, the helicopter crew ditch the aircraft before it crashes, and all but one of the crew members are rescued by a Coast Guard vessel, the Tamaroa. The Andrea Gail endures various problems: with 40-foot/12-meter waves crashing on to the deck, a broken stabilizer ramming the side of the ship, and two men thrown overboard. The crew decide to turn around to avoid further damage by the storm. After doing so, the vessel encounters an enormous rogue wave (possibly 100 - 130 feet/30 - 40 meters high). After attempting and failing to ride over the wave, the stricken fishing vessel capsizes and sinks. Only Bobby manages to get out of the boat; however, he has no chance of surviving. He is last seen all alone among the waves. Back at shore a memorial ceremony is carried out while friends and family worry and wait for a ship that never comes home.

In Poland, during 1944, during The Holocaust, a boy is separated from his family. When he tries to go to his parents, he is stopped by a soldier. He unknowingly twists and bends the gate with the power of Magnetism. More soldiers try to torture him. As the struggle continues, a soldier walks up and hits the boy in the head with his rifle butt. As the soldiers get up, after the struggle, they see the gate torn open. In the year 2000, senator Robert Kelly attempts to pass a "Mutant Registration Act", which would force mutants to publicly reveal their identities and abilities. Magneto begins his plans to level the playing field between mutants and humans. Meanwhile, a girl named Marie (a.k.a Rogue) runs away from her home in Meridian, Mississippi after accidentally absorbing her boyfriend's energy while kissing him. She meets Wolverine in Canada. Suddenly, both of them are attacked by Sabretooth, a mutant and associate of Magneto. Cyclops and Storm arrive and save Wolverine and Rogue and bring them to the X-Mansion. Professor Charles Xavier runs the facility, and leads a group of mutants who are trying to seek peace with the human race, educate young mutants in the responsible use of their powers, and stop Magneto from starting a war with humanity..

The NDR series robot "Andrew" (Robin Williams) is introduced into the Martin family home in April 2005 to perform housekeeping and maintenance duties. The family's reactions to the new convenience range from acceptance and curiosity to outright rejection and deliberate vandalism, which leads to the discovery that this robot can both identify emotions and reciprocate in kind. When Andrew accidentally breaks a glass figurine belonging to "Little Miss" Amanda Martin (Hallie Kate Eisenberg), to whom he is devoted, he carves a similar figurine out of wood. The family is astonished by this sign of original creativity in a robot and “Sir” Richard Martin (Sam Neill) takes Andrew to his manufacturer, NorthAm Robotics, to inquire if all the robots are like him. The CEO of the company sees this development as a problem and wishes to scrap Andrew or, as he puts it, "fix him." Angered, Martin takes Andrew home and allows him to pursue his own development: creating masterpiece clocks and other wood items. He also encourages Andrew to educate himself in the humanities and helps him to understand the concepts.

Many, many years have passed, and Amanda is grown up. While working on the Martins' basement, Amanda talks with Andrew, and yells his name from behind. Andrew gets surprised, and his right thumb is accidentally cut off. Martin again takes him to NorthAm Robotics for repairs, ensuring first that Andrew's personality will remain unharmed. Andrew requests that while he is being repaired his face be altered to convey the emotions he feels but cannot fully express; after the repairs Andrew is able to show a wider degree of facial expression including smiling. Through the years, Andrew has amassed enough money to need a legal adviser and bank account. Andrew eventually asks for his freedom, much to Richard's dismay. Deeply hurt, Mr. Martin grants his request, but banishes Andrew from the house so that he can be 'completely' free, once Andrew is free he starts to refer to himself as "I" rather than "one," as Andrew has done during the years. With his money Andrew builds himself a home and lives alone. In 2048, Andrew sees Richard Martin one last time on his deathbed. Mr. Martin apologizes to Andrew for banishing him, telling him it was Andrew's right to have his freedom.

After getting into a car accident while drunk on the day of her sister's wedding, Gwen Cummings is given a choice between jail or 28 days in a rehab center. She chooses rehab, but is extremely resistant to taking part in any of the treatment programs they have to offer, refusing to admit that she is an alcoholic. After getting to know some of the other patients, Gwen gradually begins to re-examine her life and see that she does, in fact, have a serious problem. She befriends Andrea, a 17-year-old recovering heroin addict, who occasionally harms herself. All of the other patients help her see herself in a different light, while she tries to get sober and come to terms with her alcoholism. The path to recovery will not be easy, and success will not be guaranteed or even likely, but she is now willing to give it a try.
