Diddy finally Freed Mase

Though in the past he's been linked to G-Unit and, most recently, G.O.O.D. Music, Ma$e says it wasn't until this week that he was finally freed of his original late '90s recording agreement withDiddy and Bad Boy Records. In an interview on MTV's RapFix Live, Ma$e opened up about his bumpy history with the label and finally being a free man.

"I've been in that contract for 16 years," he said. "Yeah, the other day he let me out of it, so big shout-outs to Diddy, I guess he woke up feeling good and he wanted to do something good."

Ma$e famously retired and went into ministry after the release of his second album, Double Up, in 1999. He came out of retirement in 2004 with a more wholesome third album for Bad Boy,Welcome Back. But shortly after that project's release, Ma$e sought to relaunch his career with 50 Cent's street-hardened G-Unit crew. He says Diddy was to blame for the failure of those plans to solidify.

"You know why it didn't go through. Diddy didn't let it go through," he told Sway. "He wanted 50 to give him all of the money he thought I owed him."

Though they've had their ups and downs, Ma$e was clear that he still has love for Diddy, whom he credited for having a great mind for business.

"He's an excellent businessman. If I was going to war, I'd wanna go to war with Puff. Because I know he doesn't back down," he said.

As for his relationship with Kanye West, who reportedly sought him out for a spot on G.O.O.D. Music and included him on the label's recent compilation album, Cruel Summer, Ma$e said he wants to be careful about getting into another long-term commitment.

"At this point, I don't really want to be under nobody from the aspect of being tied in a long, long contract," he said. "It's kinda like breaking up; you don't want to jump into a new relationship... I would love to do music with him, but I don't have time to really be under somebody's foot. I can't do that."

Interestingly, besides Kanye, Ma$e said the only other person he's considering working with as a free agent is Drake.

"He's the closest to what I feel I would have been if I never left music," Ma$e said. "I like his ability to express himself."

Obama’s Health-Care Overhaul Upheld by U.S. Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the core of President Barack Obama’s health-care overhaul, giving him an election-year triumph and preserving a law that would expand insurance to millions of people and transform an industry that makes up 18 percent of the nation’s economy.

The justices, voting 5-4, said Congress has the power to make Americans carry insurance or pay a penalty. That requirement is at the center of the law, which also forces insurers to cover people with pre-existing medical conditions. The court limited the law’s extension of the Medicaid program for the poor by saying the federal government can’t threaten to withhold existing funds from states that don’t fully comply.

The ruling frames the health-care issue for this year’s elections and is a victory of symbolism as well as substance for Obama. Chief Justice John Roberts, a Republican appointee, joined four Democratic-selected justices to give Obama a majority on a law that has divided the country along ideological and partisan lines throughout his presidency.

Roberts, writing for the court, said Congress had the authority to impose the insurance requirement under its power to levy taxes. “Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness,” he wrote.

Longest Arguments

“The highest court in the land has now spoken,” Obama said afterward in a televised statement from the White House.

The president saw incorrect television reports that the law has been struck down -- before a staff member relayed that it had been upheld, said an administration official who asked for anonymity to describe the private meeting.

“We will continue to implement this law,” and search for improvements, Obama said on TV. “What we won’t do, and what the country can’t afford to do, is re-fight the political battles of two years ago or go back to the way things were.”

The decision on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is the climax to a legal fight that featured the longest high court arguments in 44 years, a record number of briefs and extraordinary public interest in a Supreme Court case. The case tested both the constitutional powers of Congress and the willingness of the Roberts court to overrule the other two branches of the federal government.

Republican-appointed Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented, saying they would have struck down the entire statute.

‘Liberty at Peril’

“The fragmentation of power produced by the structure of our government is central to liberty, and when we destroy it, we place liberty at peril,” the dissenters wrote. “Today’s decision should have vindicated, should have taught, this truth; instead, our judgment today has disregarded it.”

Among the majority, Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor voted to uphold the entire statute. Justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan agreed with Roberts in limiting the Medicaid expansion.

Kennedy and Ginsburg each took the unusual step of reading a summary of their opinion from the bench. All told, the justices took more than an hour to announce the ruling before a packed courtroom that included members of Congress, retired Justice John Paul Stevens and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, the Obama administration lawyer whose defense of the law drew criticism.

Roosevelt’s Fight

The dispute marked the first time the Supreme Court had considered a president’s defining legislative accomplishment in the middle of his re-election campaign. The court hadn’t taken up a law of comparable scope since the justices overturned part of the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1935 during President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal.

The law marks the biggest change to the U.S. health system since Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. It was designed to expand coverage to at least 30 million people -- primarily by expanding Medicaid and setting up online markets where consumers could buy insurance -- while controlling the soaring costs of health care.

Republicans, including presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have called for its repeal. “What the court did not do on its last day in session, I will do on my first day if elected president of the United States. And that is: I will act to repeal Obamacare,” Romney said in Washington.

‘Urgency’ of Repeal

Obama’s health-care law “puts the federal government between you and your doctor,” Romney told reporters. Though he pushed through a similar plan when he was Massachusetts governor, he has said such a law isn’t wise nationally.

Republicans in Congress seized upon the court’s description of the no-coverage penalty as a tax. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, a Virginia Republican, scheduled a vote on on repeal for July 11.

“Now we will let the American people decide if they want this huge tax burden,” said Representative Joe Walsh, of Illinois, one of 87 Republican freshmen elected in 2010.

“The president’s health-care law is hurting our economy by driving up health costs and making it harder for small businesses to hire,” House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said in a statement.

The law was challenged by 26 Republican-controlled states and a small-business trade group. They contended the measure exceeded Congress’s constitutional powers to regulate interstate commerce and impose taxes.

Insurance Mandate

The challenge focused on the insurance mandate, which requires Americans to get coverage by 2014 or pay a penalty. The concept was championed by Republicans years ago as an alternative to Democratic proposals for a single government-run health system.

Roberts accepted the Republicans’ commerce argument, while voting to uphold the mandate under Congress’s taxing power.

While the federal government “does not have the power to order people to buy health insurance,” Roberts wrote, “the federal government does have the power to impose a tax on those without health insurance.” The law “is therefore constitutional because it can reasonably be read as a tax.”

Roberts said that, for most Americans, the amount of the penalty will be far less than the cost of insurance.

“It may often be a reasonable financial decision to make the payment rather than purchase insurance,” he wrote. “Although the payment will raise considerable revenue, it is plainly designed to expand health insurance coverage. But taxes that seek to influence conduct are nothing new.”

Roberts Legacy

The ruling will shape Roberts’s legacy as much as Obama’s. The 57-year-old chief justice -- whose 2005 nomination Obama opposed as a senator -- has been a leader of the court’s conservative wing on other issues.

The Medicaid expansion was designed to extend eligibility to those with incomes up to 138 percent of the federal poverty line. States that didn’t comply with the new expansion would have lost all or part of their federal Medicaid funds.

Roberts said Congress can require states to meet conditions to receive new Medicaid money, though it can’t take away existing funding. He said Medicaid spending accounts for more than 20 percent of the average state’s total budget, with the federal government covering at least half those costs.

“The financial ‘inducement’ Congress has chosen is much more than ‘relatively mild encouragement’ -- it is a gun to the head,” Roberts wrote. “What Congress is not free to do is to penalize states that choose not to participate in that new program by taking away their existing Medicaid funding.”

Industry Impact

The ruling removes some of the uncertainty the health industry had faced about the future of government policy. By upholding the individual mandate, the court left intact a provision that will give insurers such as UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH) millions of relatively healthy, low-cost policyholders.

Other parts of the law will help the drug industry, including the Medicaid expansion and the system of online insurance markets that will make it easier for people to buy policies. Hospitals also may benefit from the expansion, as will insurers that focus on managing states’ Medicaid programs, including Amerigroup Corp. (AGP) and Centene Corp. (CNC)

Hospital companies led by HCA Holdings Inc. (HCA) jumped in New York trading, and Medicaid insurers paced by Molina Healthcare Inc. (MOH) rose. Commercial carriers such as WellPoint Inc. (WLP) fell in the face of the law’s new regulations. HCA, the biggest U.S. hospital chain, rose 11 percent to $29.47 at the close of New York trading.

Preventive Care

Tenet Healthcare Corp. (THC), the third-biggest chain, closed with a gain of 5.4 percent, while Long Beach, California-based Molina rose 8.6 percent. Indianapolis-based WellPoint, the second-largest U.S. health insurer, fell 5.2 percent to close at $65.90.

Some parts of the law have already gone into effect, including provisions that close a gap in prescription-drug coverage under Medicare, allow 2.5 million young adults to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26, and provide free mammograms, colonoscopies and flu shots.

The health-care measure’s enactment in March 2010 marked the culmination of decades of efforts by Democrats and Republicans alike to put in place a universal health-care program. For Obama, congressional approval marked a victory that had eluded presidents from Harry Trumanto Bill Clinton.

Passage in the Democratic-controlled Congress came only after months of lobbying, deal-making and parliamentary maneuvering. In the end, not a single Republican voted in favor of the law. The measure passed the House by a 219-212 tally.

From the beginning, the law divided the public, with opposition fueling the Tea Party movement and helping produce the 2010 Republican takeover of the House. A Bloomberg National Poll conducted in March found that 37 percent of respondents said the law should be repealed, 11 percent said it should be left alone and 46 percent said it may need small modifications.

Evelyn "Champagne" King (born July 1, 1960) is an American R&B, disco and post-disco singer. Some of her best-known songs are "Shame", "Love Come Down," and "I'm in Love."

Evelyn King was born in the Bronx, New York, and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her uncle Avon Long had played the part of Sportin' Life in Porgy and Bess and worked with Lena Horne at the Cotton Club. Her father sang back-up for groups at Harlem's Apollo Theater.

She was discovered as a young woman while working with her mother at Philadelphia International Records as an office cleaner. Producer Theodore T. Life overheard her singing in a washroom and began coaching her. She was eventually signed to a production deal with Life's Galaxy Productions and a recording contract with RCA Records.^[1]

Background information

King released her debut album, Smooth Talk, in 1977. The album included the song "Shame", which is her only top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #9. The song also reached #7 R&B and #8 on the dance chart. The record was eventually certified gold. Another single from that album, "I Don't Know If It's Right", peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #7 R&B. This would become her second certified gold single. In 1981, the single "I'm in Love" was released from the same-titled album. It reached #1 on the R&B singles chart and dance chart in August of that year. It also peaked at #40 on the pop charts.

In 1982, King released the album, Get Loose. It yielded a top twenty pop and #1 R&B hit with the single, "Love Come Down". The song also peaked at #1 on the dance charts and reached the UK Singles Chart top ten, peaking at #7 for three weeks. The follow-up, "Betcha She Don't Love You," peaked at #2 on the R&B chart and #49 on the pop chart. From the mid- to late 1980s, King would continue to chart on the R&B charts, placing eight singles in the R&B top twenty, with three making it to the top ten.

On September 20, 2004, King's "Shame" became one of the first records to be inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in New York's Spirit club.

On August 14, 2007, King released her first studio album in 12 years, Open Book. It featured the single "The Dance," which peaked at #12 on the Hot Dance Club Play Chart.

In 2011, King also collaborated with deep house DJ Miguel Migs, on the track "Everybody", which was included on his album Outside the Skyline. The single for "Everybody" was released on July 19, 2011.

As South Carolina, continues to break into the mainstream of the music scenes, where rap is increasing by the day. South Carolina’s next artist to emerge from this sizzling state is hip hop artist Karolina the King he is making some major moves towards success, with his hit single “Super Fly” Off mix-tape “Groomed For Greatness”.

At just the age of 16 was when he made his first professional appearance into the music business, the young man of Varnville (Da-Ville) South Carolina was inspired by all the music he came into contact with by both major and local artist. He began making a name for himself on the local music scenes, performing live shows and getting his own CDs duplicated. His determination and well articulated lyrics caught the attention of a local record store owner (Spinbad Records & Moore)

Johnny Moore, who would later become a strong adviser and mentor in his music career. Shortly after Mr. Moore helped him get into a professional studio, the artist found himself in some trouble with the law. This prevented him from being able to record for awhile. After a year and half of dealing with the court system, Karolina returned from his hiatus, but to a new found home this would be Charleston, SC, where he currently resides.

Karolina continued to record and perform, he fine-tuned his craft on local crowds, and set his sights on putting together an Entertainment company (Triniboy Entertainment) named in honor of his father's heritage "Trinidadian”. This plan would call for a team, the roster consist of Three people his wife Danielle who wears many hats in the business, a close and dear childhood friend Lonzo as the Graphic designer/Creative Director and Karolina The King ARTIST/C.E.O/Promoter. Together they put "Karolina the Kings" freshmen mix-tape labeled "Groomed for Greatness" together. This was digitally released January 5th 2012.

Biography

Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Gerard Basquiat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and his mother, Matilde was born in Brooklyn of Puerto Rican parents. Early on, Basquiat displayed a proficiency in art which was encouraged by his mother. In 1977, Basquiat, along with friend Al Diaz begins spray painting cryptic aphorisms on subway trains and around lower Manhattan and signing them with the name SAMO© (Same Old Shit). "SAMO© as an end to mindwash religion, nowhere politics, and bogus philosophy," "SAMO© saves idiots," "Plush safe he think; SAMO© ."

In 1978 Basquiat left home for good and quit school just one year before graduating form high school. He lived with friends and began selling hand painted postcards and T-shirts. In June of 1980, Basquiat's art was publicly exhibited for the first time in a show sponsored by Colab (Collaborative Projects Incorporated) along with the work of Jenny Holzer, Lee Quinones, Kenny Scharf, Kiki Smith, Robin Winters, John Ahearn, Jane Dickson, Mike Glier, Mimi Gross, and David Hammons. Basquiat continued to exhibit his work around New York City and in Europe, participating in shows along with the likes of Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger.

In December of 1981, poet and artist Rene Ricard published the first major article on Basquiat entitled "The Radiant Child" in Artforum. In 1982, Basquiat was featured in the group show "Transavanguardia: Italia/America" along with Neo-Expressionists Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzu Cucchi, David Deutsch, David Salle, and Julian Schnabel (who will go on to direct the biographical film Basquiat in 1996). In 1983 Basquiat had one-artist exhibitions at the galleries of Annina Nosei and Larry Gagosian and was also included in the "1983 Biennial Exhibition" at the Whitney Museum of American Art. It was also in 1983 that Basquiat was befriended by Andy Warhol, a relationship which sparked discussion concerning white patronization of black art, a conflict which remains, to this day, at the center of most discussions of Basquiat's life and work. Basquiat and Warhol collaborated on a number of paintings, none of which are are critically acclaimed. Their relationship continued, despite this, until Warhol's death in 1987.

By 1984, many of Basquiat's friends had become quite concerned about his excessive drug use, often finding him unkempt and in a state of paranoia. Basquiat's paranoia was also fueled by the very real threat of people stealing work from his apartment and of art dealers taking unfinished work from his studio. On February 10, 1985, Basquiat appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine, posing for the Cathleen McGuigan article "New Art, New Money: The Marketing of an American Artist." In March , Basquiat had his second one-artist show at the Mary Boone Gallery. In the exhibition catalogue, Robert Farris Thompson spoke of Basquiat's work in terms of an Afro-Atlantic tradition, a context in which this art had never been discussed.

In 1986, Basquiat travelled to Africa for the first time and his work was shown in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. In November, a large exhibition of more than sixty paintings and drawings opened at the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover; at twenty-five Basquiat was the youngest artist ever given an exhibition there. In 1988, Basquiat had shows in both Paris and New York; the New York show was praised by some critics, an encouraging development. Basquiat attempted to kick his heroin addiction by leaving the temptations of New York for his ranch in Hawaii. He returned to New York in June claiming to be drug-free. On August 12 , Basquiat died as the result of a heroin overdose. He was 27.

From Street to Studio
Basquiat once told an interviewer, "Since I was seventeen, I thought I might be a star." As a teenager, he plunged into the emerging eighties art scene. He met artists and celebrities at the Mudd Club; appeared on Glenn O'Brien's TV Party, a television show about the downtown scene; and starred in a low-budget film, Downtown 81 (New York Beat), based on his own life. All the time, he was also making art: hitting downtown Manhattan buildings with spray-painted aphorisms, selling hand-painted T-shirts and collages on the streets, and making drawings. His big break came in 1980, when critics singled out his work at the Times Square Show, an exhibition showcasing young New York artists. He finally got a studio in 1981, when his first New York dealer, Annina Nosei, invited him to paint in the basement of her gallery.

Until then, he had little money to buy supplies, so he painted on window frames, cabinet doors, even football helmets—whatever he could find. After Basquiat began to make money, the quality of his art materials improved. Even so, throughout his career he often chose to paint on rough, handmade supports and intentionally pursued the awkward look of outsider art.

In 1996, seven years after his death, a biopic titled Basquiat was released, directed by Julian Schnabel, with actor Jeffrey Wrightplaying Basquiat. David Bowie played the part of Andy Warhol. Schnabel purchased the rights to the project after being interviewed, as a personal acquaintance of Basquiat, during its script development and realizing that he could do a better film.^[32]

In 1991, poet Kevin Young produced a book, To Repel Ghosts, a compendium of 117 poems relating to Basquiat’s life, individual paintings, and social themes found in the artist’s work. He published a “remix” of the book in 2005.^[33]

In 2005, poet M.K. Asante, Jr. published the poem "SAMO," dedicated to Basquiat, in his book Beautiful. And Ugly Too.

A 2009 documentary film, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, directed by Tamra Davis, was first screened as part of the 2010Sundance Film Festival and was shown on the PBS series Independent Lens in 2011.^[24]
