I'm trying to get the blog moved to wordpress where I'll re-upload all the printables that were lost. The URL will stay the same: www.freeprintablefun.org

My original site was hacked a few months back (while I was in the middle of midterms) and all the files were deleted. I have a friend helping me resolve the security concerns. Please check back in a month or so. I know that seems like a long time to wait, but since I can't afford to hire a software designer I have to work on my friend's free-time schedule.

I had copies of some on my hard drive, but there are quite a few that I'm missing. Free Printable Swimming and Water Safety

With the up and coming summer season, it would be the best time to help educate your children on the dangers of water hazards. Swimming is always and important part to every childs summer and they should know how to enjoy their summer whilst staying safe at the same time. I have found a site that offers a free printable coloring book just for this very thing. They can learn about water safety and have fun doing it too. The coloring book comes in a convient PDF form, so it is easy to and quick to print. I hope you enjoy.

I'd like to take a side trip to talk about the Barefoot Review.

The Barefoot Review publishes original written work by people who have or have had physical difficulties in their lives, from cancer to seizures, Alzheimer's to Lupus. It is also a place for caretakers, families, significant others and friends to write about their experiences and relationships to the person. Having a place of free expression is a vital part to being able to live with an illness.

I have submitted several poems to the Barefoot Review, which have been accepted. That's lovely and all, but the real positive here is in the existence of the Barefoot Review, which allows people who are otherwise marginalized by society have a voice in the literary market.

So, I'm asking my faithful readers to stop by, leave a comment, make a donation, spread the word on facebook or otherwise help support the Barefoot Review.

Free Printable Makaton Resources

Makaton is basic and simple language which is brilliant for children with disabilities and special needs which allows those with very little or no verbal skills to communicate and converse. There are a range of great free printable resources at The Makaton Charity website which anyone can download and use with their kids or in educational environment. Whether its understanding that your kid wants to settle down for a nap in their sofa bed or they want to watch a DVD, Makaton can help communicate these needs when there is no other way of doing so.

About Makaton

Makaton is simple language which uses signs, symbols and verbal speech to aid communication. It’s designed to support spoken speech and is much less complex than ASL or other sign language systems. It’s a great help for many people with learning disabilities, global development delays or other communication difficulties including autistic spectrum disorders and can help those who may otherwise struggle to get their point across or ever communicate freely. Without language, people can’t express themselves and this can mean pent up anger manifests itself in behavioural difficulties.

Makaton works with the individual and their family or friends to remove this frustration and anger and replace it with a means to communicate. The signs can be dropped into speech card by card to show the individual exactly how to get across what they mean or it can be approached in a more regimental fashion, depending on your personal needs.

The Makaton Charity provides a goldmine of information for parents and carers looking to use Makaton and the ways in which it can help improve independence and all round quality of life for people living with disabilities. The charity also provides a great range of free printable resources for people to try out and enjoy.

Fun, Developmental and Recreational

The charity provides some fun and recreational projects and ideas in their free resources section. These include:

A Mother’s Day Card – ready for 18^th March, you can download a free Mother’s Day card complete with handy phrases to cut out and use on the cover.

Easter Resources – with Easter coming at the beginning of April there’s a free Easter resource for anyone to download. This resource pack is filled with Easter signs and symbols to learn and use during the festive period.

Valentine’s Day Resources – although a bit late for this year, there’s a free resource full of signs and symbols to share with your loved ones.

Old MacDonald – this great free download has the sheet music and signs for the whole nursery rhyme Old MacDonald which can be enjoyed by everyone with a little practice.

Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat – much like Old MacDonald, Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat is another poem/song which has been translated into Makaton symbols and signs.

Dick Whittington – slightly more advanced than the other stories available, the free version of Dick Whittington translates the whole tale into Makaton signs and symbols to be enjoyed verbally and visually.

Going Back to School – this is one of the most valuable and useful resources available for free across the site. Preparing a child with a learning difficulty or special needs for their return to school after the holidays can be fraught with worry and change is often a trigger for stress and anxiety. With this great free resource you can learn all the symbols together involved with going back to school and slowly introduce the fact that it’s coming up soon.

Educational and Informational

The Makaton Charity also provides information for the carers and parents in an easy access manner including the Other Ways of Speaking booklet which explains in depth how Makaton and other language systems can be used effectively with children and adults with special needs.

The Makaton Charity’s range of free printable materials are more than just great fun, they can be a really valuable developmental and educational tool which can help change the quality of life for individuals living with special needs and disabilities. Free Printable Christmas Advent Calendar

This year I think I'm going to have an advent calendar for my son. I tried it once before with a store bought one filled with chocolate and the whole thing was torn to shreds and the chocolate extracted in the middle of the night. He's older now, so I think he can understand the point of it a little better. Plus he's way more picky about the type of candy he eats now. I'm going to make the printable advent calendar from Minimega so that I can wrap up tiny tops for Daaks (he's obsessed with tops).

Free Printables for Thanksgiving

I don't much care for Thanksgiving. At my house I like to call it "Forced Servitude and Football Day" where the whole family piles on a ton of extra cooking, cleaning, and washing up then retires to the glory of grunting at the television while I'm stuck with the mess and wrapping up leftovers. My crew isn't as good at the "giving thanks" part as they are at the eating part. That's why we go visit family on Thanksgiving when ever possible. Then I can be handy and helpful without feeling harried and ticked off and everyone takes the time to actually GIVE THANKS. Of course, my husband LOVES Thanksgiving.

I'm lucky that there are people out there that like turkey day more than me or there'd be no Thanksgiving printables.

Thank goodness Pampers, Playdates, and Parties is a better hostess than me. She's compiled an awesome list of free printables for Thanksgiving that are classy and cute.

I liked her list so much... Here's her button! Go tell her how cool she is.

Tricia Rennea is one of my go to girls for great printables. She has a sassy set of printables called Mad Candy. There is Halloween art work, goodie bags, thank you notes, and a few other things. These designs are fun enough for kids parties and posh enough for do-it-yourself Halloween cheer at the office. This year Tricia created a special printable Halloween paper doll for Tip Junkie. It has THREE outfits. Three posh Halloween outfits to play with. If you haven't been to Tip Junkie yet, then here's a reason to go. If paper dolls aren't your thing head over there any way because there are a lot of wonderful free printables on her site.

MinieCo provides a printable template for creating this awesome Pac Man Ghost Garland. I'm sure there's lots of other ways you can find to use this template too. The garland is an awesome quick craft that can be used to decorate just a section of bare wall or to string around an entire porch (spray with clear spray paint to extend the life of this printable and try to hang it somewhere it won't get wet if your using it outside). Don't worry if you don't have acetate or plastic, you can sandwich the eyes between two pieces of packing tape

Pacman Hallowen Garland Template

Disney Family has their own line up of Disney themed Halloween printables. The Mickey Mouse printable candy box is cute, but its the Jack Skeleton flashlight cover that really trips my trigger.

You can always count on Cannon to produce some great printables. Of course they do! They sell printers and printer ink! They've added some new items to their line up. My old favorite the printable Halloween tree is still there along with some masks plus a new moving printable Halloween toy!

IT MOVES!

From Babble we get a list of 25 epic free Halloween printables. This is the place to score some awesome posters, cupcake toppers, and POTION BOTTLE LABELS! The navigation on this site isn't exactly intuitive because its set up as a slide show, so here's a hint, click through the pictures till you find something you like then click on the name of the website where the printable can be found to get to the download. It's a couple extra clicks but the link round up is so wonderful I can't complain!

If you're adventurous you can even make a coin snatching vampire paper toy! They also have free games, music, an art gallery and more. Man, I love these people!

Martha Stewart, diva of craft, has a bazillion Halloween craft ideas. There are some printables, clip art, etc. But, my favorite are these neato carve by color pumpkin carving templates. I think I'm going to tackle a posh pumpkin upgrade this year!

One of my son's teachers sent me to Montessori for Everyone to have a look at some of the printables on their site. If you need some clean visuals stop by. His teacher will be using the life cycle of a pumpkin with him tomorrow. I was excited to find a nice visual for layers of the atmosphere. I was looking for one yesterday, but no dice. The one on their site fit the bill perfectly. They also had some story cards that could be used to help a child generate their own story by providing key words and images. Good stuff.
