Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, begins late January or early February on the western calendar. CNY 2015 starts Feb. 19. It's Year of the Sheep or Goat. Here are easy, inexpensive ideas to throw a Chinese New Year festival in a school classroom or at homeschool or with your family. Sheep (goat) themed activities are included.

"Travel" to China. Start at the DL-TK website's for free printable Chinese New Year activities. Read books on China. Here's an article I wrote on best children's literature from China for kids in grades pre-K to grades two.

Decorate. Use free printable Chinese crafts., symbols, clipart and graphics to use for decorations. Children can use to make banners, desk decor. Create greeting cards and give to elderly.

Make crafts. Use the free printable CNY activities from the link above. Make Chinese zodiac calendars, lantern crafts (for Lantern Festival), hats, paper dolls, booklets, and a Chinese zodiac wreath. Print CNY recipes, coloring pages, crafts, games with lots of printables.

Learn about animals of the zodiac. The link above has pages of activities devoted to each animal: horse, dog, rat, rooster, dragon, pig, sheep, rabbit, monkey, ox, tiger and snake. There coloring pages, booklets and more.

Host a pageant. Help children create animal costumes from the dress up bin and recycled materials. Got more than 12 students? Do male, female and baby animals (ram-ewe-lamb). This teaches science vocabulary.

Sample Chinese foods. The Chinese New Year theme is luck. Simple kid-friendly treats would be animals crackers (horses), iced tea, fortune cookies, dumplings, spring rolls (egg rolls), cherries, Mandarin oranges and fish crackers.

Play games. Links above have printable puzzles and games. DL-TK link has a printable quilt with a square for each animal. That could be used as a bingo or memory game. In China, children are given lucky gold coins. Get some foil-wrapped gold coins and hide them for kids to find.

For early math skills reinforcement, there are valentine-themed counting worksheets, sorting activities, pattern extensions and sequencing games. BBC's sci-fi show "Doctor Who" has taken American audiences by storm, especially with younger middle schoolers and teens. The Doctor Who TV series will celebrate its 53rd birthday in 2016. None of us watched Doctor Who till the youngest daughter discovered it in 2005 when she was seven. She like the cool TARDIS time ship in the blue British phone box. The current Time Lord was the Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston who became my favorite. Her favorite was the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. Since the Time Lord has regenerated twice, with Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Time Lord. How about free printables for a Doctor Who themed birthday party?

So if you love galaxy and time hopping in the TARDIS, and battling Cybermen and Daleks here are free printable Doctor Who coloring pages to extend your adventures. Doctor Who used to come on late at night when if first appeared in the US. Back then TV stations didn't come in that great and BBC shows on PBS got even worse reception. So only hardcore science fiction fans with super-strong TV receivers watched Doctor Who. But it has quite a cult following now in the US and always has had in Great Britain.. Each of the 12 incarnations of Doctor Who is very different the others. The doctors are always good guys, though--even when they have to do something that seems bad it's really for the good of mankind. Not many of the older Doctor Who doctors will be familiar to modern audiences outside of the UK. except perhaps Tom Baker the Fourth Doctor who was Puddleglum, the Marshwiggle in C.S. Lewis's "The Silver Chair" (Chronicles of Narnia). This fan site has many free printable Doctor Who coloring pages of Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. And now, back to the TARDIS!

Pop-ups on a computer are pretty annoying but in the world of art, pop-ups are magical. Pop-up crafts are 3D designs, usually of made of cut paper, that "pop" when you open or unfold them. In Japan, cut paper crafts are called kirigami (similar to origami). Kids love pop-up books with interactive details and they love to make their own pop-up books.
