So I was sitting trying to think of some anagrams and I thought I would go a little political. So I anagramed Willard Mitt Romney and came up with "IMMORTALITY"...no I am really scared. Does that mean he can run for office for life? :)

High Scoring Words vs. Low Scoring Words in Scrabble

I thought I would touch on this topic about when to use the higher scoring words vs. the lower scoring words in scrabble. Since I get a ton of emails of people asking me this I thought i would share.

When you sit down to play a game of scrabble or even words with friends naturally the first thought that comes to your head is to obtain as many high scoring words as you can and that will help you win. What is more exciting than scoring a 60 to 70 point word right? We if you have played scrabble for any length of time you know that getting words to score high is not that often. So what do you do with the rest of your letters? That's where skill comes into play and I am going to show you why.

Scrabble consists of 100 tiles. Of the 100 tiles 70 of them are worth 1 point. These letters are E, A, I ,O U, N, R, T, L, S. With that taking up 70% of the letters in the entire game of scrabble you are only left with 30% of the tiles to form higher scoring words. At this point your odds aren't too bad, but they are not looking to good. If you noticed in the 1 point letters that all of them are vowels. According to Parker Brother 66% of all the words in the official word list contain vowels. That will only leave you 34% of all the words you can make without vowels. Of that 34% you only have a 30% chance to make a word. Doesn't seem to promising at this point does it? This is where the question "High Scoring vs. Low Scoring" comes in. Just based on odds you have a 70% chance to form a word with 1 point tiles.

On average there are roughly 20 - 25 words that are played during a game of scrabble. This can vary depending how many smaller words you play. This in effect will also most likely be a lower scoring word.

Lets take the example of 25 words. If you were to use an average of 2 letter words during your game, with each tile consisting 1 point you would have an average score of 50 points. We are not taking double and triple letter and words scores here, just the raw numbers.

Now lets take larger words with an average of 5 points. In order to reach 50 points you would have to play ten words to match the 50 points. Seems easy enough, but remember that only 30% of those words that contain a score like that can be played. So you have a 30% chance to score 50 points. If you take the 2 letter words, you have a 70 percent chance to make 50 points. Which one seems the most likely road?

Now of those 2 letter words how many variation are there? There are a total of 92 variations of words you can play. Most of these contain vowels, which also happen to be all 1 point tiles. When making words you have a better chance to be able to line up a word horizontally to another word and form several 2 letter words vertically. This may seem hard, but that is where a good cheat tool comes into play. The one we have on our site allows you to lock letters into their position. This can allow you so filter your results to find more 2 letter words vertically that can match up when you play a word horizontally. In the following image we show how this is done.

There are many great opportunities you can take to play lower scoring words (2 letter words and 3 letter words) than there are high scoring words. The odds alone prove this to be true. We have found that on average you can improve your score by 75 - 80 per game. Try it!

I know this is a none scrabble related post but give me a sec to show you.

Have you heard of Leap Motion yet? If you haven't get ready to hold on to your hats. This thing is going to chance the future. Its like Mission Impossible waving hands in front of screens is coming true.

This device is a full 3d interactive device that puts the wii and xbox to shame. Its fast, very responsive and I can't wait to get my hands on one. I was discussing on some forums about the nui interface and I can't wait till it comes out. Here is a video showing you more about it

Why cheating at scrabble has risen to an all time high

Remember the good ol days when people didn't use the internet to help them make words for scrabble and other word games like words with friends. Well those days are long gone. In my previous post I talked about the rise in searches for scrabble type keywords like "Scrabble Cheat". This search has risen to 2 million in the last year alone. Its obvious when looking at the rise that it coincides with the infamous release of Words with friends on May 4th 2011. We have Zynga to thank for that. Anyways... people love to cheat and it shows, but is it really cheating? Most people would argue yes, but many others say its just "assistance".

If you are one who is against cheating at word games then let me tell you that you have your work cut out for you. You better sharpen your skills because now days there is no way to tell if the person you are playing is cheating. Unless of course you are sitting right in front of them.

I have come up with some ideas and methods you can use before you start a game of scrabble or WWF to help lower the risk of cheating.

Explain before you start the game that there is no use of word finders allowed.
If you suspect someone is cheating you can simply let them know that you would like them to stop.

In anyway getting around a cheater is going to take skill on your part. Remember those who are cheating are not going to take the time to learn strategy, they are just going to go for the highest scoring words they can find to win, but there are things you can do that they will not which can help you get ahead.

Use as many 2 and 3 letter words as you can, you would be suprised how much they count towards your score at the end.
Try to always place your tiles so your opponent cannot place words in the special scoring boxes (2L and 3W)
Save your vowels for that perfect moment when you can slam the big words on them and get some seriously major points.

IMO don't worry if someone is cheating, taking the right steps in learning the strategies will help you win every time.

Why scrabble will see its highest search volume in 2012

One this is for sure, we here at Free Scrabble Dictionary know scrabble. With knowing scrabble we also know what our users want and the quality of it. Besides creating a site for users who can find many resources for scrabble there is one thing we also like to do. We like to predict the scrabble market on the internet. With the release of words with friends back in May 4th 2011 there has been an huge growth that has steadily climbed. Some of this contribution is due to the iPhone itself. As more people get iPhones one of the first apps they get is words with friends. Based on the graph below you can see the trend in search of scrabble on the net.

The keyword "scrabble cheat" is the top keyword search related to scrabble. The reason is that users want to find an anagram solver that will help them find words they can make for scrabble or words with friends.

You can see since the release of words with friends the growth has not stopped. Yes there is a drop after the holidays but scrabble related searches always have a spike in the holidays. This is due to

The holidays people get together more
After the holidays life gets busy and people can play as much
The holidays contribute to new users getting smart phones and installing words with friends

The reason why there is going to be the highest search volume in the next few years is simply based on the trend you see above. With a base starting at around 2 million seaches for "scrabble cheat" right now the growth for the holidays is going to boom. If you thought words with friends and scrabble were popular now, wait for the holidays.

With this rising boom Free Scrabble Dictionary is preparing for this rise in searches by providing relative content for their users and giving them the information they are looking for. Get your skills perfected my friends because your audience this year is going to get tough :)

INversionGAMES - The New Word Game Word Wars I.II.III

In my search for new word games which I try and stay in touch with I came across this new one which I thought it was interesting. It's called "INversionGAMES" which is similar to a scrabble game but tiles can be turned in a 360 direction to form other letters in order to form the words. It gives you way more possibilities to make words and score higher points. Here is a quick video tutorial that shows you how to play and explains the game.

Very interesting way to play a word game, just like scrabble I am sure this game is going to get huge. Of course here at Free Scrabble Dictionary we are always trying to bring you the latest tools to help you with word games so we have already created a new word finder you can use with this game. If you like to cheat at scrabble then you will love to cheat with INversionGAMES

Yup more changes, we have noticed that our word finder is more popular than our scrabble dictionary look up. Not by much but people do tend to use it more so we decided to place the word finder on our homepage as well as on our scrabble cheat page. Essentially they are the same thing, but this way you don't have to go to far to get it :) Hope you like it and please give us advice how we can make our site better. We welcome comments and suggestions.

Mobile Update Features

We have added a few new features to our mobile site, if you are not paying attention you might miss it so we are here to tell you :)

We added the ability to search multiple dictionaries with our mobile site including

TWL
SOWPODS
Enable - words with friends
Drawsomething
French
German
Spanish

We felt this was a feature to add which will give you the ability to search specific dictionaries depending on your game. No matter what word finder you are on you will always have a ability to search any dictionary you want. Depending on what page you are on will result in defaulting to that specific dictionary.

For instance: If you click on "Words with friends cheat" you will default to ENABLE dictionary which is used with words with friends, but from there you have the ability to search any dictionary you want.

New Updates to Free Scrabble Dictionary

We have added some more features to our site to create a better user experience. Some of the feature changes include:

Moved the dictionary search bar on the top of all the pages to make it easier to search for definitions and since we are all about being a scrabble dictionary we thought that would help you better.
We have cleaned up our home page and scrabble cheat page as well as added more word finders in several versions and languages like (TWL06, SOWPODS, French, German and Spanish)
We have created a new anagram solver widget to our site where you can easily add this same anagram solver to your existing website. Its clean, small and very fast with results on average in half a second.

New Additions to our dictionaries

As you can tell we are making some changes to our site. We have been getting input from users and we are trying to make the best user experience for you guys. Here are a list of some things we have done and still working on

Added the ability to search multiple word lists and verification to whether the searched word belongs in the lists
Added a French, German, Italian and Spanish Dictionary and anagram solver
We are beginning to combine our dictionary results and anagram results into one page. So you will see definitions and anagrams for the word. Don't worry if the word does not exist, it will still result in a anagram result.

Hello All

We have just launched our blog so we can better inform you of upcoming changes we are making to our site as well and giving you guys the chance to get to know us a little better.

We recently revamped our word lists and dictionary to better serve you. We now compare results with both the official TWL06 and SOWPODS word lists. When searching for a word we will show you if the word you are searching for us located in either word list.

We also have added a a feature for when you search for a word, we return the amount of points the base word is worth. That can help you know exactly how many possible points you can make.

Some upcoming changes:

We are going to be launching a scrabble board simulator which will give you a birds eye view on your game and allow you to input the current tiles on the board as well what is in your rack. Based on that it can determine exactly what the next best move will be to get the most points. Be sure to check back everyday.
