It is important to train our Golden Retrievers to get their chewing habit under control. Now there are many stores that stock those chew toys and they are often preferred, but there is another way that you can help your Golden Retriever take care of this instinct and still ease the pain of teething.

With this method, you will take an old sock and fill it up with several ice cubes. After you have placed the cubes in the sock, put a knot in the sock and place the sock in a big plastic bag and place it in the freezer. When you see your dog trying to chew on your shoes or slippers or the nearest table, give him a sock. It is important that you give this to your dog when you have the time to spend in the same area with him. You do not want to give this to your dog and leave him unattended as he could chew the sock and swallow pieces of it. I like to keep a few of these in the freezer so that we never run out of the sock chew toys.

Digging

Have you been outside in your backyard after your dog had the run of the yard? Did you fall into a bunch of potholes? If you are like me, I throw my hands up and just shake my head. I know that Charlie has been digging again. Golden Retrievers love to dig and it is important to understand that this is part of their nature. If they are outside, they will dig holes in your yard. If they are inside, your dog may try to dig holes in your floor, tear up your carpet, and dig on the couch or on the bed. I have found a way to train my Golden Retriever Charlie to dig as he needs to but in such a way that I still have a yard and house left.

The best way to help your Golden Retriever fill this need is to create an area that they are free to dig in. Take an old sandbox or purchase a swimming pool. Fill this with soil or sand and put it in the backyard. Bury a couple of favorite toys in this area, and then take him to this area and encourage him to come to this area when he wants to dig.

Leash Training

If you were like me when I first got Charlie, I wanted to go walking with him. Like many people, he took me for a walk rather than me taking him for a walk. So, I decided it was time to make some changes. Since Charlie was just a puppy, I first put the leash and collar on him when he was in the house so that he walked around dragging the leash alongside him. I used a fairly long leash and then I picked up the other end and called him to me. Every time that he came to me, I made sure to really praise him. Now we did this several times a day for many weeks until he got used to coming to me. Then we went outdoors in the yard and worked on this outside. It took awhile, but we kept working on it until he would come longer distances. With much praise and when he came to me we got used to using the leash.

Cyndie King - This article gives you just three tips on how to train your Golden Retriever. He wanted one that was just as a much a companion as it was a retriever of the birds he shot. The then popular Irish Setters and Spaniels were only good for showing him where the birds had fallen but their coats, much too fine, kept them from finding them in harsher areas. So, Dudley Majoribanks created the Golden Retriever and, coincidentally, one of the most popular breeds. Of course, it was not an easy task--it took him years to create the dog he envisioned (years and multiple breeds).

From 1865 to 1889, Majoribanks used his pups to further the idea of the ultimate hunting dog. When he finally accomplished his goal, the result was a mix of the Setter, lesser Newfoundland, Springer Spaniel and the Water Spaniel.

Majoribanks had his Retriever.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds (second only to Labrador Retrievers) and with good reason: their gentle temperaments and sweet faces make them a favored family dog. But, also, their water-repellent coats and high intelligence make them ideal for hunting, which Majoribanks would be proud to see continue. This mixture of intelligence and loyalty mark them as a natural choice for families. This is a devoted breed, one that will do everything they can to please.

Standing between 20 to 24 inches and weighing 55 to 80 pounds, this is not a dog meant for great intimidation (of course, its friendly isposition cancels that idea, no matter what the size). Instead, this is a dog built for activity: whether hunting, retrieving or merely playing with its owners, the Golden Retriever is meant to move.

This can cause a problem for some households, however. Many people see the Golden as the ultimate dog. In some ways, it is, but there are disadvantages. One, as mentioned before, is the need for activity. Golden Retrievers were not created to simply lay around the house. It needs something to spark its intelligence and use its natural instincts. If you do not have the time to devote to this breed, then you should not consider purchasing a pup. But, it's not just time spent exercising--your Golden wants time with you. That matters most. The affectionate dogs cannot stand to be left alone. If they are, for longer periods of time, they may become destructive.

Of course, many people respond to this by either: locking their pet outside or crating him. Neither one of these options is overly wise. The Golden is prone to digging when left outside for too long and could escape the yard, and, if left in a crate, the dog would be miserable. No, you need time to spend with this breed. Otherwise, you will both be unhappy.

Another disadvantage to the Golden can also be argued as its greatest advantage: its temperament. To the Golden, everyone is a friend to be licked and loved. In some ways, this is excellent. You can trust your pet never to harm your children, your other animals or even strangers who visit the house. In other ways, however, this is a problem. The Golden does not make even a tolerable guard dog. If you are looking for something to defend you, this is not it. This breed was meant to be sweet, not to become aggressive if a stranger should appear in the doorway. Now, yes, the Golden Retriever will bark (they can actually become quite vocal) but that is all they are likely to do. Even intense training is no guarantee that your Golden will defend you. It's hard to suppress centuries of loving instinct.

But, if you are searching for a dog that will love you and try its best to please you, then the Golden is the perfect match. This is a dog that will always greet you at the door, even when you've just stepped out for a minute, and this is a dog that will want to be with you no matter where you are. If you have the time and energy to devote to it, Golden Retrievers will never let you down.

Rich Cussons is a champion for dogs of all breeds buy Golden Retrievers in particular. It’s a friendship made in heaven; dogs live with us and make the living fine. But a little puppy is like a baby, it needs to be well taught and trained so that both the owner and the pet live in harmony.

Golden retrievers are obedient and easy-to-train dogs. The puppy has to be taught good manners; it has to get used to a daily routine. You will have to make it known to your puppy where it can and can’t go, whether or not it is allowed to sleep on the sofa or chew your slipper. Do not puzzle the puppy by permitting something one day and forbidding it the next. You can give your puppy a little treat as an incentive and gently reprimand it as a penalty, but never hit your puppy – it will break its spirit.

Toilet training can be started right away. All your energies need to be devoted to it in the first week. You must take the puppy outside as soon as it has had meals or awakens from sleep; puppies usually get a little restless when they have to go. If you like you can use a word association. Puppies can associate words with going to the toilet and this way you can make them go any time you think suitable.

Though the golden retriever has a friendly temperament, a new puppy has to be trained to socialize with people. As soon as it is 8-9 weeks old, you should take it out in your arms or in your car. He will love socializing and you’ll have a friendly little dog that will be the talk of the town.

Twelve weeks is the ideal time when you should start taking your puppy out on walks. It will take a few weeks before your dog learns to be on the leash. But as soon as it does, walks would be something that both you and your dog will look forward to. You shall walk to the park with wind in your face, flower falling on the path and your golden retriever walking by your side, and 'It will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship'.

Golden Retrievers provides detailed information on Golden Retrievers, Golden Retriever Puppies, Golden Retriever Training, Golden Retriever Collectibles and more. Before your pet is properly trained, it's very important that your gold retriever does not spend too much time outside of it's crate. If your pet is roaming around your home, you should watch it carefully. Don't be upset at your pet if it relieves itself in an unwanted area. Your pet is your responsibility!

Training your golden retriever in your home is almost like training a child. In the morning, show your dog where to go. Designate that one location for relieving him or herself. Once your pet does, praise it. Let your pet know that it has urinated or pooped in the correct place.

While your in this training process, you don't want your pet to roam wherever it wants. Neither do you want to let it outside of it's crate when it wants. When an accident happens too much, it could become a habit. Pet's don't learn from their mistakes too easily. You have act like a parent and guide your pet and avoid these accidents as much as possible. Even though your pet might not fee too comfortable going through this process, it's important that you train your pet right so the good actions become good habits.

If you give him too much freedom, your golden retriever could relieve itself on the floor. This might seem like a small thing. You could always clean up the mess and expect it to not happen so easily again. However, this is a major mistake. After you clean up the urine, you might not think that there's anything there. However, there's a good chance that your dog could smell it. This could trigger the action of peeing. So when he smell that area, your dog may identify this as the normal area to relieve itself. Having your dog relieve itself in the right location is very important.

If possible, it would be a good idea to allow your dog a passage, such as a dog door, to go outside. If you're training your golden retriever to relieve itself outside, you should use a litter box or a wee-wee pad at the designated location. If you don't have a outside passage, having wee-wee pads (also known as underpads) will be sufficient in an indoor environment. These can allow your dog to easily identify where it should go incase it has to go.

The process of house breaking your golden retriever could be time consuming, as well as frustrating. It's important that you praise your dog and follow a strict regiment. Treat him like he's a part of the family. Once your dog is properly trained, things will be much easier. So make sure your pet is properly trained!

Charles Amith is a successful Webmaster and publisher of http://goldenretrieverweb.com/.
