Mystery Shopping - What is It?

Mystery Shoppers or evaluators are contract workers hired by franchises to make sure their branches are being run according to their expectations of customer service, cleanliness, and accuracy. If you ever completed a survey from a receipt to get a freebie, you were doing a form of mystery shopping.

Mystery Shopping however, usually requires more detailed reports, and often photographs. Some companies just have simple check list reports, but don't be lax on these . Keep copious notes to back up your observations! Mystery Shopping rarely is a full time job, but it can help pay for gas, groceries, shoes, eyeglasses and more.
Since Mystery Shopping is contract work, you are self- employed and can claim some expenses for your work. For example a portion of your heat, hydro, rent, internet, gas, vehicle repairs, and so on may be claimed. Keep all your receipts and take them to a tax expert.

Did you know there are mystery shops you can do from home?
Many mystery shopping assignments do require you pass unobserved, and make a purchase, but there are some that are only website critiques, observations or phone calls.
Did you know there are some mystery shops that do not require a purchase?
Many retail or restaurant mystery shops reimburse you for a small or specified purchase, but others simply pay some pay you for your reports. Occasionally , in remote areas, you can be reimbursed for mileage too.

Wondering how to get higher paying mystery shops?
When you are just starting out, and companies are not familiar with your abilities, you will only be able to apply for simple tasks. Once you complete more training modules on their websites and hand in excellent grammatically correct reports, you will be able to apply for higher paying jobs. How do you know something is a Mystery Shopping scam?

You will NEVER be sent money in advance for a mystery shop. This is one BIG tip off that you are being targeted by a scammer.

You also do not need to pay for Mystery Shopping company information. You can search the internet for this information,

Custom Search

Paying for a list of Mystery Shopping Companies or a book about mystery shopping with tips for beginners is not a scam, because they are saving you endless hours searching the internet for Mystery Shopping Companies and may provide you with useful tools such as spreadsheets to keep track of your mystery shop applications.

Many mystery shopping companies send out email notices on a daily basis about shops that are available in your area, while others require you to login on their site.

If you sign up for Mystery Shopping Alerts from a company offering Bronze, Silver and Gold notification levels at different prices this is not a Mystery Shopping Company, but a company just passing on the information they have received. While this is not a scam, because they are providing a service. I think this is poor value for your money. The Bronze or free level only gets notifications after jobs have already been assigned and I believe you will receive notifications faster directly from tmystery shopping companies.

Just remember - a Mystery shopping company will not pay you in advance!

Access to the Internet - this can even be at the library
Great Observational Skills

More and more mystery shopping assignments require:

Camera or Cell phone that takes pictures that can be uploaded online.
Access to a printer.
Access to a scanner.

Mystery Shopping - Getting Paid

Many mystery Shopping companies pay through PayPal, while others pay by direct deposit into your bank account, and still others pay by check.

Remember:
Most Mystery Shopping Companies pay after they get paid by the client, so your check will not arrive from many companies for about a month. Do not take on shops that require a purchase if you don't have the money in your budget.

Mystery Shopping - Random Last Minute Pointers

If possible, do shops early in day when you going to a location in the area. Make detailed notes including colours and sizes of trash items even if it is not required. You may wish to privately take photos of change rooms and washrooms to back up your reports. If you can get a spy cam like this pen camera,it can be useful.
Save your notes!
Companies may request clarification - especially of negative items up to six months later.
If you will not have access to the internet until late at night, notify the scheduler about this and ask for an extension, so you will be able to hand in your best work - when you are wide awake. If possible, upload your receipts and photos ASAP, then fill in the rest of your report. This shows the scheduler you have completed the shop and helps keep evidence from getting lost.

Once you complete the action item in a particular square the square will change color signifying the action item is complete.
You have a limited amount of time to mark off as many squares as possible so use your time wisely.
Be mindful of the patterns and their corresponding bonuses located on the right of your Swago Board. The patterns will vary in difficulty and bonus value.
Once you’ve achieved a pattern the corresponding “Submit” button will light up. You can have multiple patterns available for submission, however, you can only submit ONE pattern so choose wisely.

Canadians living in northern Canada, really have a tough time with grocery prices. We recently moved to northern Ontario to start a women's respite in our home. The cost of food is crazy!
What can you do?
We started growing food in all kinds of containers inside, because the growing season is so short.
Some of our best plants are what I call my garbage garden.
Have you tried growing garbage?
This post has tips on starting a garbage garden and some plants that are working well for us I'm our garbage garden.

How do you get garbage veggies for growing food in your garden?
Here are a few tips that can help you grow your own garbage garden.

2 Ways to Start Your Garbage Garden

Have some veggies in your fridge headed for the garbage?
Stop!
Don't throw them out!
Plant them!
Next time you head to the grocery store check out the mark down rack for veggies that are wayyy past being edible, then take them to the grocery manager and ask if you can use them for your garden. Some produce managers will take one look at the decaying mess and mark them down 100%.
Which veggies have we had the most success with?

Garbage Garden Veggies

Beets

We plant soft beets and continually harvest beet greens from them.Just keep cutting the leaves and more grow back! Small tiny leaves are wonderful salad greens, large leaves can be steamed like spinach.

Turnip Greens

Plant a soft turnip and continually harvest turnip greens , as per above.

Carrots

Limp carrots will actually revive in soil. You can also plant carrot tops and harvest the leaves for salad greens.

Fennel

Fennel, regrows the tops really well. Use the feathery parts in salad.

Celery

We've had limited success with regrowing celery. For best results, trim a bit off the bottom and leave the tiny centre stalks to grow. Use the leaves in salads and stews. You can dry the leaves and crumble them into a spice jar.

Dandelion Seeds

Dandelion seeds are free for the taking in almost every yard. Grow dandelions in pots in a sunny window. Harvest tiny leaves for salad, but be sure to eat them before 3pm as they are a natural diuretic. There is a reason the French slang for dents de lion is pis-en-lit!

How a Bernina Could Be a Blessing Now

I would love to win a Bernina 880 E to use at the women's respite we are trying to establish in our home in Northern Ontario. It would be wonderful to be able to share my love of sewing with other women and help them learn this great life skill.

While we were blessed with the opportunity to pick up a portable sewing machine for $5 at the Cochrane Ontario Food Bank shop, a Bernina 880 E dream machine would be a great help for making quilts for women and children to have on their beds and take with them when they leave.
Imagine being able to whip up individualized aprons, scarves, night clothes and pillowcases!

While a top of the line Bernina embroidery machine might not be necessary for making window quilts to help lower heating costs, it would be wonderful to be able to embellish the quilts with inspirational words.

It certainly would be wonderful to have a new Bernina to use.
