Frugal Printing: Choosing a Printer

Saving money on your home printing costs starts with choosing a printer that works well for you, costs less to buy, and costs less to operate. It's great to get a free printer (and one of my lucky readers will when they win this HP Photosmart Premium) but if you have to pay for one it's good to know how you can pay less. Here are some general tips that come directly from my readers, lets start with getting a printer for free:

Accept a Hand-Me-Down
When people buy a new printer, it doesn't necessarily mean that their old printer doesn't work anymore. Tell everyone you know you're looking for a hand-me-down printer to use. Lindsey said "Mine was a hand me down when my parents purchased a new printer." And Kevin said "I didn't buy a printer. I got if for free from someone who was cleaning out their office."

Check Out Freecyle
Because yes, people like to give their unwanted but perfectly functional stuff to total strangers that can use it! Freecycle is a great way to find a free printer in your area. That's how Alicia got hers!

Ask for a Printer Gift
"Mine was a gift! I have no problems asking for what I really need, so I don't get junk for Christmas" says Be Organized Save Money

Buy it On Sale and Use Coupons
Watch for a sale, then use a coupon on top of that if you can. Before I was given my current HP Photosmart Premium printer I purchased an HP Printer online thru Ebates at HP.com and used a coupon code I found at RetailMeNot. I had compared prices and found that HP's online store was competitively priced for the products I was considering buying. Other readers are doing the same thing - it's called stacking your discounts!

Online stores aren't the only ones with coupons. Know which stores near you issue coupons and how to get them. My reader are shopping with coupons for printers at Costco, BJs, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Staples, and other stores. Elizabeth said "I bought ours the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) and saved TONS of money doing that!"

Watch for Rebates
This can be a great way to significantly slash the price of your printer - by asking for money back! Amanda said "I got my printer for $10 after rebate."

Consider Refurbished
I have purchased a refurbished HP printer and I was just as happy with it as I would have been with a new printer. The reason is that I couldn't tell it was used, and it has to pass the same tests that the new printers do before it can be sold (at a deep discount). Just be sure you know who you're buying that refurbished printer from and that it really has been tested by the manufacturer.

Bundle Purchase
Buying a new computer? Often they'll throw a printer into the bundle so you don't have to purchase it separately. Just make sure you compare prices and know if the price your paying on your bundle purchase is a good one compared to if you bought the components separately.

Choose an All-In-One
Why? Because it does everything and saves you money on copying and printing costs that you would normally outsource if you had a normal printer. The savings can really add up, especially if you have a home-based business. I love my HP Photosmart Premium because it does everything and I wished I would have looked at getting an all-in-one printer sooner. Stephanie said "Mine is an Epson and quite a work horse. I'm using it for business, family, and of course printing coupons!"

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is offering two free personalized photo luggage tags when you subscribe to KLM's eNews. You can upload your photo and then add your name, address, email address, and phone number to the back. You will receive two luggage tags of the same design (or send them to a friend) and it takes about 3 weeks for them to ship.

After you design your tag you will be asked to tell at least one friend to enter the Picture Yourself on KLM contest (it appears to be optional). The email they send to your friend encourages them to make their own personalized luggage tag, and when you create a luggage take you are automatically entered in the contest. DC315 - My Review
Thanks to Philips I received this Philips DC315 Docking Entertainment System to review. This is a different docking system than the one I'm giving away. It's perfect for putting on top of my dresser because it's a great alarm clock (even has a snooze button). I'm amazed that I can finally listen to music without using earphones on my iPhone. I rarely browse new electronics, so I just didn't know that docking systems like this existed. Since I usually read a book on my iPhone before I fall asleep (and usually run down the battery) it's great to be able to charge my phone while I sleep. The directions that came with this docking system were easy to follow and within 5 minutes I had set it up. You can design any photo card, but what perfect timing if you plan on sending out at least 50 Christmas cards. The photo cards include envelopes and you can choose 4x8 or 5x7 in either horizontal or vertical orientations. If you need to order a few more than 50 they are priced at 59 cents each for 4x8 and 89 cents each for 5x7.

I used the snowflake background and placed three photos on my card. I had fun using the photo editor to adjust the contract, brightness, and saturation of my photos to make them look better. Don't be afraid to play with that photo editor because it's easy to return to the original photo settings. And don't forget to check out the frames, they have lots of options!

Here are my tips on creating your custom photocard:

* Background - I recommend that you pick a background first. These are fully customizable cards which means you control how many photos and which sizes they are. I love that you aren't locked-in to the design like most photocards. I actually designed two different photo cards with two different backgrounds before finding the one I liked better. Don't be afraid to experiment until you get the best results.

* Photos - You have a choice, pick photos from your SeeHere account or add them directly from your computer.

* Text - Create your own and you control the size, font, and color.

* Frames - Don't forget to check out the frames, I was impressed with how many options there were.

* Speed - If you find that the SeeHere site is loading slowly then try again at another time. Don't spin your wheels and get frustrated. Sometimes there are lots of people trying to access the site at the same time and this can slow things down. So try again during non-peak times (late evening, and early morning). It also may help if you download the SeeHere Desktop software, look for it under "Resources" at the bottom of the page. This lets you design everything offline, and then you just have to get online to upload your order.

Texas Randalls $50 Gift Card Giveaway

Randalls and Tom Thumb stores in Texas have just lowered prices on thousands of items in their store to help their customers save money. These are real price reductions and you'll see yellow tags with the "New Low Price" on every aisle in the store. Thanks to Randalls, I'm shopping Randalls to experience their new low prices with a gift card they gave me. I'm also giving away $50 gift cards to two of my lucky Texas readers. Here are my shopping tips to help you save more money at Randalls.

Real Savings with Everyday Low Prices
It's not just hype, the savings are real. Prices have been significantly lowered on thousands of name brand and store brand products. Here's a great example I found when I went to buy raisins. SunMaid Raisins were $5.99. The new everyday low price is $4.99. If you have a Randalls card, the price is $3.00. So that's a half-price savings without even using a coupon!

Read the Weekly Ad
No kidding, this is the most obvious tip but one that many people don't take the time to do. The weekly ad tells you what's on sale and contains coupons to clip. If you want help matching up the sale items with coupons please visit Saving with Shellie who lists the weekly coupon match-ups.

Compare Prices Between Brands
I saw a great example of how buying the store brand at Randalls can help you save a ton of money. See those two grocery carts, they have the same products in them, except one is filled with the name-brand products and the other with the store-brand products. The price difference between the carts is $38.05 or a 38% savings. Buying store brands are a great (and easy) way to save money, but it always pays to take an extra minute to compare between all brands on the shelf because sometimes the store brand isn't the cheapest (especially if there's a sale and you have coupons).

Look in the Entertainment Book
There are four $5 off $50 Randalls coupons near the front of the book! This is a great way to save a little more on your groceries. If you don't have an Entertainment Book, then ask your friends if they have any extra Randalls coupons they won't be using.

Print Coupons
Did you know there are Randalls coupons you can print? These are store coupons that you'll find at the beginning of the list along with other Coupons.com coupons that can be used at any store. You should also read their Pr intable Coupon Acceptance Policy so that you understand which coupons can be used at Randalls.

Load eCoupons
The easiest way to save is automatically by having all of the Randalls eCoupons loaded to your Randalls card before you go shopping. You can load Shorcuts, Cellfire, and P&G eSaver coupons and even print a list of your loaded coupons to take with you to the store.

Money 4 Mom: Paid Surveys

Want to get paid for taking surveys? I don't personally take surveys for money just because of my own time constraints - but my fellow blogger Nicole's Nickels does find that it's worth her time and she wrote this guest post to include in my Money 4 Mom series.

I have been doing online surveys for a year and a half now and enjoy the additional income it brings me. While you won't get rich doing online surveys, it can supplement your income by $50-$100 per month depending on your demographic and how many surveys you try and qualify for. That's pretty good gas money, I'd say!

I suggest signing up for a new email address just for surveys. I don't get any spam in my surveys only email address so that's not my rationale behind the new email address. It's that I get A LOT of survey invitations each day and don't want to clog up my inbox. This way, when I log on to the survey email account, I know just what will be waiting for me and can sort through and try to qualify for the ones I want.

Each person's experience with the various survey companies will be different since we each fit a different demographic. Many surveys end with a request from the manufacturer for you to test a new product. You won't know when you start that there will be a product test though. I've tested high-end hair products, toilet paper and even frozen dinners that arrived on dry ice!

I'm going to briefly highlight the companies I have been most successful with and find the most easy to work with. If you want to check out the 15+ other companies I am signed up with and my experiences with them, please check out Nicole's Nickels.

Here are my top 5 survey companies:

My Survey
My Survey sends me approximately 3-5 invitations per week. I like this company because you get points for taking the screener and then if you qualify they offer you additional points for continuing to take the survey. Points can be redeemed for cash, charity donations or merchandise.

American Consumer Opinion
American Consumer Opinion sends me fairly infrequent survey invitations but the ones they do I almost always qualify for. The payment is high for the industry and I have received several product tests from these surveys. They also have a sweepstakes where I once won a small check. Payment is via check.

Opinion Outpost
Opinion Outpost is the company I have earned the most with. I receive between 7-20 survey invitations per week from them. You are given a set amount of points per survey and points are then redeemed for cash via check. You can start surveys with Opinion Outpost and finish them later which is a nice feature.

Pinecone
Pinecone is an "invite-only" survey company. You'll need to find a banner or google "pinecone banner" to find a site that routinely has a registration link. Pinecone sends me approximately 2-4 screeners per month and 2-4 surveys per month. The screener surveys are short and each survey pays $3 - via check or paypal. I always get paid within days and love not having to cash out or remember to check my points.

Ipsos-I-Say
Ipsos-I-Say is another survey company that I receive approximately 5-7 surveys per week from. I qualify frequently for their surveys and find I have very few technical issues with their site. Most of my product tests come from this company and points are redeemed for cash.
