Power Slide: A Darcy Lott Mystery (by Susan Dunlap)

This isn't a complicated narrative. Unlike Muller or Leon, Dunlap prefers to keep her main character concentrated upon one problem or one very tight set of problems. There's a point in the book when Lott sees another stunt woman about to "shoot the wires." I didn't know what that meant, so I looked up some wire stunts on YouTube and then realized that in Darcy Lott's statements about focus, about pushing off and keeping going, about needing to bend and shimmy and reach, she's talking about her own quest for the truth - the truth about her lover, the truth about her brother, the truth about the way she sees the world. Read more...

And then there’s the mysterious Aurox, a jaw-droppingly gorgeous teen boy who is actually more – or possibly less – than human. Only Neferet knows he was created to be her greatest weapon. But Zoey can sense the part of his soul that remains human, the compassion that wars with his Dark calling. And there’s something strangely familiar about him…

Will Neferet’s true nature be revealed before she succeeds in silencing them all? And will Zoey be able to touch Aurox’s humanity in time to protect him – and everyone – from his own fate?
If You Ask Me: (And of Course You Won't) (by Betty White)

Still going strong at the age of 89, Betty White is practically a force of nature, and only a determined curmudgeon could dislike this endearing collection of mini-essays by the seven-time Emmy winner. Written in a style similar to her previous book "Betty White: In Person," this new book is filled with chatty, warm, winning anecdotes about HOT IN CLEVELAND, her recent turn on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, and, as always, her love for animals. Her fundamental decency as a person, as well as her gifts as a performer, are evident throughout. Numerous black-and-white photos from throughout her career grace the pages. If you're looking for bitterness, cynicism, or salaciousness, keep moving. But if you'd enjoy spending a few hours in the company of a very classy, funny, down-to-earth lady who wears her success lightly, this is just the ticket. Read more...

The Hakawati (by Rabih Alameddine)

This is not the first time that Alameddine has used such literary structure. His first novel, "Koolaids," interlaced two parallel narratives, the worst years of the AIDS crisis and the civil war in Lebanon. There, as in "The Hakawati," the narratives resonated one with the other. And his second novel, "I, the Divine," an ingenious work all in first chapters of his narrator's never-to-be-completed memoir, managed to give us multiple perspectives on events told by a single character, much as The Hakawati gives us multiple views of universal themes that echo through very different tales. But whereas the two earlier works had some rough edges and unpolished facets, "The Hakawati" is a perfect gem, burnished, intricate, complex, and with every feature serving to magnify its brilliance and dazzle. Here is a writer who has grown into his initial promise, perhaps beyond it. Read more...

The Descendants: A Novel (by Kaui Hart Hemmings)

Though the character of Matt is not based on any particular person, Hawaiian readers cannot help but make associations between his background and that of the Big Island's Parker family, giving an aura of "realism" to Matt's exotic background as the heir of a princess. His generosity in wanting to have Joanie's lover share her last moments strains credulity, however, and the peripheral characters often exhibit extreme behavior. A number of unusually dramatic and cinematic moments late in the novel make this a good story, though not necessarily a realistic one. Entertaining, and filled with tugs at the heartstrings, The Descendants captures the life of a family at a crossroads, and does so with panache. Read more...

The Desert of Souls (by Howard Andrew Jones)

Desert Of Souls is the highly recommended first novel of an Arabian Nights-style series by the new author, Howard Andrew Jones. As many other reviewers have already somewhat detailed the storyline, suffice it to say it relates the adventures of a scholar and the captain of the guard of a member in the government of Caliph Haroun al-Rashid as they go in search of a powerful magical tablet. Being chased by an evil spy and a Magi, they encounter a lost city in the desert, a djinn, a desert of actual souls (hence, the title), and other beings and objects, natural and magical.

It's written in the style of the Arabian Nights but with an emphasis on the action-adventure of a sword-and-sorcery tale. The author also conjures up new magical creations and beings not found in the typical Arabian Nights tale. Read more...

The Desperate Remedy (by Martin Stephen)

The story line is cleverly devised so that the history with real people is interwoven into a superbly written espionage plot. Fans of historical tales including romance readers though there is no love story will immensely appreciate Martin Stephen's delightful retelling of the Gunpowder Plot. Read more...

The Destroyer Goddess (by Laura Resnick)

This book provide a satisfying conclusion to the many subplots in the story. I am quite impressed with Ms. Resnick's storytelling ability and her writing style. The plotting and character development were outstanding, but what I liked most of all was the witty dialogue and often realistic-sounding exchanges between father-son, lovers, friends, etc. My only minor quibble is that the book uses the term "dryly" a bit too much when describing dialogue. It was dry and witty, but there was no need to point this out all the time!
All-in-all, very nicely done. Read more...

The Detachment (by Barry Eisler)

One thing to note is that Eisler doesn't hold back his opinions about global (especially U.S) politics and policy. Being a former CIA agent, he sheds a scary visibility on things we read about in the news, but from another angle. He's either hyper-cynical or hyper-realistic. I am concerned (for him) about the former a scared (for all of us) by the latter. For he writes fictional novels about things that are real. Does he have access to information that the common citizen doesn't? If so, then damn. I think I need a shot of one of Rain's recommended scotch/whiskeys! What I think Eisler does - and does it so well - is to scour the best news sources (be they "establishment press", blogs, subject matter experts he personally knows, etc) and consolidates it into a plausible story that is current and insightful. What I especially appreciate is that he doesn't take our "protagonists"(??) and make them Jack Bauer superheroes. These are conflicted real characters being exposed to the belly of the beast and acting as brave as they are paranoid.

Lastly, I'll add that a day after finishing The Detachment, I continue to be emotionally satisfied. Yes, this is good fiction. But it's also like watching a good friend. What Eisler has succeeded in beyond everything else, is to take us to the abyss, and bring us back craving more. Read more...

I started it yesterday morning after finishing a very long, tedious read (1,100+ pages) and just finished this afternoon. I did not expect to find this story as absorbing as I did. There was no point in the book where I could comfortably take a break, so I read through meals, laundry, and while I should have been sleeping. I was always too anxious to see what was going to happen next to put it down. It's the tale of an Appalachian teacher arrested for murdering her father. The story isn't primarily about the teacher, but rather the reporters that cover the story. There's some mystery here, but that's not the core of the book. McCrumb is at her best writing about the South and the people that live there. The stakes in the book simply get bigger and bigger. Technically, it's a well-structured page-turner. But in the end, it's the story that got me and held me. Every part of it was just so inventive, exciting, and so darn interesting! I entitled this review "Best. Novel. Yet." The writers need to spend more time developing the small details. If a character is in a particular position, say, at the bottom of a cliff, for example, this book will instantly have that character at the top of the cliff in the next paragraph. This can be dangerous at times and can often leave out critical information. There is a part in this book where you dont learn how someone dies. One page, the character is fine. A few pages and no details later, someone is mourning his loss. Details, details, details. Read more...

The Everlasting Hatred: The Roots of Jihad (by Hal Lindsey)

Hal Lindsey's goal in this work is to instill a sense of awe and appreciation for the wisdom, provision, and dependability of God throughout the ages. It draws the reader into a closer reverence for God by presenting many of His virtuous attributes, which is the proper methodology that should be adopted by more of the evangelical community. I commend Mr. Lindsey for this approach. Read more...

(When Bruno mishears the name of a famous linguist, he begins having terrifying visions of a toothy dwarf named Gnome Chompy.) In addition, Echols is one of my favorite RoCom authors, especially after The Ex Games. This novel is all about the chase, four years of chase to be exact, the give and take in complicated relationships, and how the smallest past betrayals can become something larger over time. Hayden and Nick are completely realistic with their stubbornness and difficulty in dealing with all the issues in their lives. I think it was their painful reluctance to apologize that I could relate to most, though, and because of that, I rooted even more for them to work out their problems and get together. Yes, the whole romance of the story is pretty predictable, but that doesn't makes its culmination any less sweet it anything it's even more so. And for that, I really just thank Echols for this cute and fun-filled story that will brighten up any reader's days. Read more...

A cobbler is brutally murdered on an excursion train to a prizefight. It turns out that the 'cobbler' is also a hangman, and not a very good one. Who killed him and why? Will other murders follow? It's a good yarn and the time and place of early-mid victorian London and England are brought to life with nice, crisp descriptive prose.

This isn't a profound or profoundly complex book, but it is fun, diverting, and has some good historical fiction worked in. Mystery buffs and train spotters alike will enjoy it! Read more...

He must set aside his guilt in order to be the man Carolyn needs.

Another great story in the Creed series. Wonderful characters, dynamic dialogue and a setting that will make you want to move to Lonesome Bend. You will love the way these two needy characters dance around the truth, pretending their feelings are not on parade.
The God Species: Saving the Planet in the Age of Humans (by Mark Lynas)

As we enter a new geological era - the Anthropocene - our collective power now overwhelms and dominates the major forces of nature.

But from the water cycle to the circulation of nitrogen and carbon through the entire Earth system, we are coming dangerously close to destroying the planetary life-support systems that sustain us. In this controversial new book, Royal Society Science Books Prize winner Mark Lynas shows us how we must use our new mastery over nature to save the planet from ourselves.

Taking forward the work of a brilliant new group of Earth-system scientists who have mapped out our real 'planetary boundaries', Lynas draws up a radical manifesto calling for the increased use of environmentally-friendly technologies like genetic engi- neering and nuclear power as part of a global effort to use humanity's best tools to protect and nurture the biosphere.

Ecological limits are real, but economic limits are not, Lynas contends. We can and must feed a richer population of nine billion people in decades to come, whilst also respecting the nine planetary boundaries - from biodiversity to ocean acidification - now identified and quantified by scientists.

Ripping up years of environmental orthodoxy, he reveals how the prescriptions of the current green movement are likely to hin- der as much as help our vitally-needed effort to use science and technol Read more...

As usual with Erikson the substantial cast has been nothing short of huge as well as intriguing, the cultures varied and above all else the author over this ten book cycle has create principle players that the reader cares about. Whilst not all have survived (Erikson plays for keeps) to face the final challenge the series has been nothing short of a joy to read from the start to its end and one that will please readers the world over.

Whilst it will be sad to say farewell to a great many literary friends within, Stevens writing has done what few other epic authors have done before, that is stick not only pretty close to schedule but produce a series that had a clear goal and outline from the start. The writing doesn't let up from the outset, the prose chasing the pace in an almost manical way in such a style that the book was nigh impossible to put down and as such left me wondering in places how I could have missed some of the clues from previous titles. Definitely a series that has gone out with a bang and hopefully readers will be pleased to hear that Steven has been contracted for more titles set within the Malazan world. A real joy to read and if you're prepared to take on a challenge worth reading from the outset again just to get the most from thi Read more...

Their chemistry is intriguing if flawed since Aubrey's too blinded by ambition and youth to see the depths of like Maddy has seen. Still, youth and age and partners in crime make an irresistible combo. The details of Sissy's guilt or innocence, as well as the murder of Jim Bakker-type preacher Buddy Wing, pale next to the timeless clash of crusty but soft-as-meatloaf and mashed potatoes Maddy and young dynamo Aubrey, who seems indifferent to the fate of Dale Marabout, her competition in the crime beat reporter stakes. Nearly everything the negative reviews lash out at him for doing. The first book is very good, and it was a pleasure to be able to digest the tome in a reasonable amount of time. I'm getting tired of 900 page "thrilling fantasy" adventures. I'll give this author time to grow on me and would just offer an opinion that others should see how this all turns out by the time we reach the sixth book. The characters are most enjoyable. My quibble is that the "Church" is too easy of a villain. But time will tell as each book unfolds. Five stars for a fine start. Read more...

Christopher discovers his neighbor's poodle dead, impaled by a pitchfork, and, because he adores puzzles, he sets out to solve the mystery of who killed Wellington . But Christopher is autistic, a boy who doesn't like to be touched and cannot decipher emotions beyond the tools his teacher has taught him, and so the task requires the huge effort of testing rules and facing his own fears. A literalist by neurology, he deconstructs life into a set of mathematical equations and physical laws. This unique perspective makes him a good detective on one level, where clues and logic rule, but it also fails him on another, higher one because he cannot understand the magnitude of what he uncovers.

That Haddon was able to write a book from Christopher's point of view with all his quirks and still make him lovable is extraordinary. By necessity, the writing is simple and unadorned, but the language of details elevates it from the mundane. The insertion of mathematical puzzles and drawings add to the reader's understanding of how Christopher's mind works. Haddon's real skill is an understatement that allows the reader to comprehend what is going on even if Christopher cannot. Although Christopher cannot grasp subtlety and nuances, the reader can, and that's where the true force of this exceptional novel lies.

The Curse of Chalion (by Lois McMaster Bujold)

Cazaril is a much different hero than Miles Vorkosian. Where Miles is young and incredibly irrepressible, Cazaril is old and more cautious. The mapcap early adventures of Vorkosian/Naismith, while vastly entertaining, are much less realistic than the plot in this book.

Although the first in a series, the book ends happily without any significant loose ends. The entire book is deftly woven together all the threads come together very satisfyingly at the end. Read more...

Stealth of Nations: The Global Rise of the Informal Economy (by Robert Neuwirth)

Product Description:

• Thousands of Africans head to China each year to buy cell phones, auto parts, and other products that they will import to their home countries through a clandestine global back channel.

• Hundreds of Paraguayan merchants smuggle computers, electronics, and clothing across the border to Brazil.

• Scores of laid-off San Franciscans, working without any licenses, use Twitter to sell home-cooked foods.

• Dozens of major multinationals sell products through unregistered kiosks and street vendors around the world.

When we think of the informal economy, we tend to think of crime: prostitution, gun running, drug trafficking. Stealth of Nations opens up this underground realm, showing how the worldwide informal economy deals mostly in legal products and is, in fact, a ten-trillion-dollar industry, making it the second-largest economy in the world, after that of the United States.

Having penetrated this closed world and persuaded its inhabitants to open up to him, Robert Neuwirth makes clear that this informal method of transaction dates back as far as humans have existed and traded, that it provides essential services and crucial employment that fill the gaps in formal systems, and that this unregulated market works smoothly and effectively, with its own codes and unwritten rules.

Combining a vivid travelogue with a firm grasp on global economic strategy—along with a healthy dose of irreverence and skepticism toward conventional pe Read more...

Wrong Side of Dead (by Kelly Meding)

Product Description: The second half the book focuses on wrapping up the main plot that has engaged us through out the series and lets us in on many of the sub plots that were happening behind the scenes. I felt this book was more a character driven then the others in that we are given peeks into each mind, friend and enemy, and see what they saw and felt during this shadow war. Old and new players are brought together and we see more of a concentrated effort to work as a team. Though old prejudices are still apparent, an new era is emerging and I for one am anxious to see where this will lead.

Evy, our heroine, continues to grow and now sees herself as more then an extension of the Triad. Strong, loyal, and very much in love with Wyatt, she is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure his safety. Courageous to a fault, her deeds have not been in vain and many have her back, to her continuous surprise.

Wyatt and Phin are both a strong part of Evy's life though in different ways. Wyatt loves Evy with his whole heart and it kills him each time she is hurt or dies. He feels responsible for all she has endured and finds himself standing on a precipice-unsure if staying with her is the best for either of them. Phin, an owlkin, is Evy's friend of the heart. She risked her life to save his family once and for that she will always have his loyalty. Working with her and getting to know her has turned that loyalty into an unbreakable bond of friendship. A part of him is a Read more...
