Today is a really great day for those who like IBM DB2 and especially those who like to get it free of charge. Earlier today we released DB2 Express-C, the free version of the IBM DB2 DBMS, to the world. We made it available for immediate download and we also made it available on the cloud in the RightScale MultiCloud Marketplace. Don’t get scared by the word “Marketplace”. DB2 Express-C is still free of charge and just as before it can be used to run production applications and even be embedded in to your own solutions.

Learn Hadoop at the IOD Conference … there is still time

This year, Big Data is really big at the IOD Conference in Las Vegas. It is a subject of the keynotes, press releases and there are lots of breakout sessions on the topic. For a few sessions that were over capacity a repeat was scheduled. Oracle NoSQL, Hadoop and the Cloud: something borrowed, something new?

What exactly did Oracle announce? Oracle proclaimed that they will offer a NoSQL database a key-value data store that will scale across a large number of "storage nodes". The rest of the industry would say a "cluster" ... not Oracle. The next thing on the menu perhaps provides an explanation. It is Oracle Big Data Appliance. Where the rest of the world is looking to scale NoSQL across very large clusters of commodity hardware, Oracle wants to see big expensive machines or as they call them "Engineered Systems". Hadoop Programming Challenge Extended by a Week

I blogged about Hadoop Programming Challenge on Big Data University and an opportunity to not only get free Hadoop education but also an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas. We have had 1400 students take the required Hadoop Fundamentals course. And we have been genuinely impressed with both what many of the students have been able to learn and the creativity of some of the Hadoop Programming Contest submissions.
