Yacht owners have a broad selection of flags to choose from these days when it comes to a yacht's flagship and registration. Many things must be taken into consideration before choosing a flag that represents the very best interest of the vessel, owner and crew. While many flag states offer similar security and representation a few do rise above the rest when it comes to protection and service. One is Cayman, a stable, bed rock British colony located in the western Caribbean ran by British common law. Owners must 1st qualify and a liable company structure must be set up on the island by a residential entity. This process can be done fairly easy with the proper direction and many times from a remote location.

Cayman offers five vessel registration options: Full; Interim; Provisional; Under Construction and Demise (bare boat) charter. When considering flagging your yacht Cayman a guide line follows to find the very best registration for you.

Vessel name availability

Vessel Qualification (Merchant Ships, commercial Yachts, Private Yachts)

Evidence of Qualifying Owner and proof of legal title

Vessel dimension and other details

Complete relevant forms

Depending on vessel size and class certain statutory requirements may apply to bring a vessel into compliance. Think of compliance as a check list to ensure the safest and most professional cruising plan. These requirements are set out by but not limited to SOLAS, MARPOL and 73/78 covering things from oil pollution prevention to safe manning documents that ensure your crew is trained and properly licensed. Cayman's matrix of international conventions and mandatory compliance measures is what essentially qualifies it's fleet and crests it's high standard, one of the most formidable in the industry.

Today many yacht captains and owners are being faced with a big decision as a large majority of paint and gel-coated vessels approach the 5-8 year mark and either need repainting, constant polishing or a new technology that will restore their vessel's painted surfaces back to new, maintain the condition and extend the paint life out to maximum length. For vessel's between 75-150 feet the cost of a repaint can range anywhere between $80,000-$750,000. What options exist? How can a vessel's paint life and performance be maximized to create a huge savings?

Introducing FYM's new I-shine paint preservation system a frictionless water based U/v coating system which effectively arrest the clean shine and show condition of your vessel for 9-14 months while eliminating maintenance time by %50.

With the steady advancements in nano technology over the last 10 years we've finally found a break through paint preservation system strong enough to hold up to the harsh sun and element of South Florida. The answer lies in the molecular make up of an exclusive product called I-shine, a polishing system and program designed and carried out by Freedom Yacht Management's well trained crew of detail specialists.

I-shine is a 5 stage product line which allows for even the most fouled awlgrip paint or gel-coat to be brought back to optimal condition with out hiding or filling imperfections. The result is a gleaming hydrophobic finish which lasts for 9-14 months garanteed after which a follow up 2-step treatment is recommended to maintain for another year often discounted between %20-%35 from the intial treamtent. The cost savings when compared to a repaint is enormous A few finishing qualities which set I-shine ahead of the rest are..

I-Shine is Water based-Not Petroleum based like the leading product lines which hide and fill swirls and imperfections before breaking down into the paint and gel-coat.

I-Shine protects with nano sized Emulsin Chrystales woven into a thick strong mat, completely organic in nature commonly known as glass- No silcon, no waxes that break down and attract dirt.

I-Shine is Engineered on a Nano Level (one billionth of a meter) for maximum protection!

The foam pads used during the restoration process are engineered to meet the needs of the product thus being extremely tight pored yet flexible enought to meet demand and not scratch the surfaces when used properly.

Does your head spins every time you go to West Marine or National Marine in search of cleaning products? Let's face it there are some good marine products out there. As competition grows it's important to take a deeper look into these products to evaluate their true molecular make up. Expert yacht detailing and paint restoration crews are moving away from petroleum based products because of the acidic fall out that occurs as they break down.

It's interesting to see yacht detailers and crew take a closer look at what is actually in the solution they are applying to their yacht. The traditional use of petroleum in compounds provides for great action and shine but is that the true condition of the paint or surface? An important question to ask is what percentage of the product breaks down. When it comes to paint and gel-coat polishing, compounds and waxes with natural fatty suspension carriers are water based and break down in nature as oppose to petroleum based which have an acidic break down which fouls the surface over time and literally cuts short your cosmetic's shelf life.

Green cleaning products are not only better for the environment and manatee but the cosmetic surfaces themselves. We've asked 3 of Ft lauderdale's top notch yacht detailing groups to list their top 10 green products that are effectivly making a difference in their yacht maintenance program and the environment. With no further adu here they are.

Today many yacht captains and owners are being faced with a big descision as a large majority of painted and gel-coated yachts approach the 5-8 year mark and either need repainting or a solution that will restore their vessel's painted surfaces back to new, maintain the condition and extend the paint life out to maximum length. The cost savings of pushing out a $500,000 repaint 5 more years is enormous. However there has yet to be a proven product, system and team capable of delivering such a claim.. Until now.

Introducing Freedom Yacht Management's I-shine Yacht Preservation System a brilliant way to restore your vessel's painted and gel-coat finish to maximum shine while doubleing the paint life.

With the steady advancements in nano technology over the last 10 years we've finally found a break through paint preservation system strong enough to hold up to the harsh sun and element of South Florida.

Like many of the world's most well engineered products I-shine is made in Germany. It's 5 stage product line is water based which allows for even the most fouled awlgrip paint to be brought back to optimal condition. This gleaming finish lasts for 9-12 months garanteed after which a follow up 2-step treatment is recommended to maintain for another year often discounted between %20-%35 from the intial treamtent.

What attributes make I-shine superior to traditional compounds and waxes?

I-Shine is Water based-Not Petroleum based like the leading product lines which hide and fill swirls and imperfections before breaking down into the paint and gel-coat.

I-Shine protects with nano sized Emulsin Chrystales, completely organic in nature commonly known as glass- No silcon, no waxes that break down and attract dirt.

I-Shine is Engineered on a Nano Level (one billionth of a meter!) That's maximum coverage! Existing products don't come close. Also, this allows for a better cut when using #1 #2 #3 for removing fouled paint as heat is reduced.

The foam pads used during the restoration process are engineered to meet the needs of the product thus being extremely tight pored yet flexible enought to meet demand and not scratch the surfaces when used properly.

Important Things to Consider Should you Attempt to do yourself

Saftey 1st, make sure you have and properly wear OSHA endorsed harness gear and follow proper manning requirments should you use scafolfing.

Understand the staging of products and application procedures will change depending on the condition of the paint. Understand the least amount of cut to bring back fresh paint is the best however not enough will require you to have to do all your work over once you relize the wrong 1st step yacht polishing product and application process was applied.

Make time- Typically a 3-step procedure on a 110 ft vessel will take between 480-500 hours or a 4 man team roughly 2.5-3 weeks to complete.

I-shine is detail specific so you must use the proper pads with the proper product, use at the recommended low speed and out of intense sun-light. Your pads must be clean alwasy or your just moving dirt, not removing it. When using the #4 and #5 using micro-fiber 10 inch bonets on a 10 inch orbital, switching between put on bonet and take off bonet to minimize streaks clean perfectly.

The application process is extremely detail sensitive and builds on itself so make sure the person who starts an area finishes it and knows what step and procedure is next should he turn over his responsiblity.

What good mother would send her child out into the blistering sun without sunscreen on? Alright babies and boats aren't apples to apples but summer is here and there's no better time than now to protect your vessel's gel-coat and painted surfaces from the harsh weather elements that exist.

When a yachts gel-coat or painted surfaces are left unprotected deterioration quickly starts to take place at a micro-level causing the surface to becomes porous and rot. Shine is immediately taken away and the vessel's gel-coat or paint begins to haze, taking on a flat color. The porosity of the surface catches more dirt preventing it from sliding off your boat thus requiring much more cleaning and work. The good news is almost all gel-coated surfaces and painted surfaces can be restored, given there is still dept and it hasn't been worn through.

It's imperative that the restoration and maintenance of your vessel's cosmetics surfaces follow certain steps pertaining to products and application techniques. Having the wrong product or application method can cause swirl marks, waste time, heaps of money and or destroy your vessel's paint job. Below are a few tips we've learned over the years having mastered this process.

Step #1-THOROUGH VESSEL WASH DOWN

Using an aggressive soap/cleaner give the yacht a thorough wash down and good chamois. This will guarantee a clean surface and keep dirt from clogging up your wool buffing bonnets.

Remember you want to remove dirt when polishing your boat not move dirt so make sure your brushes, pads and micro-fiber are always clean and fresh!!

Many time people think because they are compounding first or cutting off the top millimeter that it doesn't make a difference to wash it.. it does and wool pads are expensive so give it a good wash first.

Step #2-COMPOUNDING, MICRO-FINISHING AND WAXING

If you've ever seen an old piece of wood being sanded down to a beautiful finish you know that the process requires several steps and usually starts with a rough sandpaper to remove the dead (grey) wood and then a medium grit sand paper to minimize the heavy scratches creating smoothness and then a light sandpaper to fully remove light scratches thus creating a friction less substrate before a polyurethane sealer is applied as a last step to protect the wood from the wind and rain.

The same principles apply when finishing gel coat and paint except our sand paper comes in the form of liquid compound laden with chunkier minerals for heavy (coarse) cut and lighter minerals for (lighter) cut. Our wax is usually a silicon polymer for pure protection.

To properly finish gel coat or painted surface you must start with the most aggressive grit compound needed to fully remove the dead surface and restore color and clarity after which (like finishing wood) you stage down moving to lighter compounds that will remove scratches and bring shine and clarity before applying a topcoat or wax to seal and protect the surface.

Most times this is a multi step process unless the boat's gel coat or paint is brand new and or has been perfectly maintained and needs just a coat of protective wax.

The 1st cleaning compound used will depend on the amount of oxidization or fade your vessel's surface has. A heavy haze (chalky look) will require a heavy cut compound, a medium haze (cloudy look) will require a medium cut compound and a light haze (misty looking) will require a light cut compound to restore to fresh paint and gel-coat look, shine and appearance. After which an application of topcoat or wax is applied to seal the surface and keep out the elements.

PRO ADVICE: For each step or type of compound used a different texture of buffing pad is needed-Heavy duty compound requires a white (course) wool buffing pad-Medium and light compound requires a yellow- (medium) texture wool buffing pad. Foam pads are HIGHLY recommended when finishing dark color yacht paint and are of different texture depending on color. Apply wax with hand orbital, remove by hand and polish at slow speed with a perfectly clean soft buffing pad.

NOTE: Use a spur (cleaning tool or rake stick) to clean your pads frequently when polishing as residue will build up and cause swirls and burn marks, when your pad has tight short dread locks it's done**Product knowledge and application technique is what separates the pros from the bums**ohh yeah don't exceed 3000 rpm on your machine and apply even steady pressure in 3 foot horizontal and vertical motions when buffing.

PRODUCTS: The 3m finishing system has been the leading paint and gel coat finishing system over the years. It flat out works! Presta products out of Miami deliver an excellent, comparable line of product that are water based (no fillers) and a bit cheaper.

Antifouling and Bottom Painting

Optimal cruising performance is often a reflection of your vessels underside. Your boats bottom coat is the first line of defense against some harsh elements trying to consume it. Staying on top of this preventative maintenance chore is one of the most important ones you face. The smallest amount of growth underneath your boat will affect speed and performance and if not sealed properly will penetrate your hull's gel-coat creating core rot (blisters).

Let's find the right paint for you!

Favorable bottom coatings for your vessel should depend on what type of boating you do, where you boat and the type of bottom paint applied to your boat in the past. Fresh water boating doesn't necessarily require the same strength and durability of bottom paint as say a fishing boat in the Florida Keys.

"Bottom paints act as a barrier to reduce marine growth and barnacles by releasing toxic biocides at a carefully controlled rate" Back in the day of old the bellies of boats were nailed tight with copper platting, now copper compounds (cuprous oxide) are laden in the bottom paint itself to combat growth some contain "slimacides" which greatly reduce the sun's deterioration of paint along the water line by filtering out UV and blocking photosynthesis.

2 Types of Anti-fouling Bottom Paint

It's important to remember the pros and cons of each type of bottom paint. Compatibility of one paint on top of another is critical. Generally speaking softer paints can be applied over harder paints but not visa versa

Modified Epoxies

Modified Epoxies deliver a hard durable finish but require yearly repainting. The higher the cooper content the more resistant it is to algae and growth. Keep in mind "the cheaper paint, the less copper and protection" I don't recommend short changing price for durability and protection. The warmer the water and longer the boating season the higher the bottom growth and better protection you'll need. Modified epoxies are popular because they are typically cheaper and can be painted over each other if the bottom has been sanded properly for a nice firm lock.

Ablatives

Ablative paints are softer semi-hard paints that flake off over time much like a bar of soap. Multiple coats the 1st time applied is recommended and is well worth it. Ablatives with boosted copolymers are very popular because they allow a vessel's bottom to go 2 or 3 years sometimes with out needing to be repainted.

TIP: When applying multi coats of Ablative paint make the base coat a different color of paint than the successive layers. Perhaps RED and other layers Blue or Black. This will allow you to see when you are down to your base level.

WARNING: Do not paint a modified epoxy paint over an ablative paint with out removing it completely first by sanding! It will simply flake off and your money and protection will be lost.

Preperation is Critical! Let's do it!

Pressure Washing-Should the hull have growth remove thoroughly with a pressure washer using a mold release agent

Sanding and Prep-Should older paint exist remove using a DA and 100 grit sandpaper taking the underside of your vessel down to fresh gel-coat. If any blisters exist (bubbles caused from water penetration) remove them using the interlux repair guide to achieve a perfect underside substrate for an impermeable layer called the Barrier Coat.

Applying a Barrier Coat-A barrier coat is an impermeable layer of epoxy that you will apply between paint and hull so that water cannot be absorbed and blisters cannot form-much like a primer. After applying and dry time has exceeded lightly sand with 120 sandpaper to give a perfect texture for bottom paint to adhere.

Applying Bottom Paint

Safety first-Make sure you have the proper safety gear to protect yourself completely i.e gloves, respirator and body suit.

Make sure you have the right amount of product. (see chart below)

Make sure that you have a good weather window (2-3 days) to apply.

Remember to work in conditions above 50 Fahrenheit and take in consideration if your recoating, most paints have a window of time to over coat. If you wait to long you'll have to sand and re-apply.

IMPORTANT! The care and effort you put into preparing the surface for each coat will greatly impact how well and how long the paint keeps your hull free of marine growth and fouling. So use the right material-plenty of solvent wash products, clean cotton rags and 80-grit sandpaper will help guarantee success.

Tape off the vessels bottom as close to the boot stripe as possible. Many times the scum line on a boat with full water and fuel tanks is a good place to start the tape line. Also tape around the transducers, prop shaft struts, thru-hulls and other metals.

If painting over existing bottom paint where heavy fouling exist; pressure wash and use a strong acid; be sure to use a respirator and full suit to protect you from caustic chemicals. Make sure any loose paint is removed with a scrapper, using a 80 grit sandpaper on high or uneven areas. You want the boat's bottom to be as smooth as possible to minimize drag. Wipe down with a tack rag and denatured alcohol after sanding.

If painting a new hull-sand with 120 sand paper and clean well with a mold release solvent before applying barrier coat, let dry then sand with 120 grit before applying bottom paint.

Rolling the paint is the most common method of application using a 3/8 nap solvent-resistant roller cover

Stir the paint thoroughly , pour into a paint tray and begin rolling the paint below the tape line from one end of the boat to the other.

Re coating Make sure the dry time on the 1st coat has expired before recoating.

When finished remove paint and properly dispose of canisters and used brushes in a trash bin designated for hazardous materials.

Read manufacturers recommendations for application procedure and drying times before you launch the boat.

Tip! A good way to determine paint quantity is to estimate the surface area needing paint below the water line: Most paints have a theoretical coverage area and require 2 coats, so expect actual coverage to be no greater than half of the theoretical value.

Length x Beam x .75=Approximate Underwater Surface Area in sq.ft

Vessel Size Amount of Paint Needed-gal (2 coats)

32' 2 gallons

36' 2 gallons

40' 2.5 gallons

45' 3.5 gallons

50' 4 gallons

60' 5 gallons

70' 6 gallons

80' 6.5 gallons

For the do it yourself boaters these blogs are for you! Summer is quickly advancing and the waters around South Florida are turning optimal for cruising, diving, fishing, snorkeling and all the other outstanding amenities these waters offer. So let's get your vessel in top gear and condition for the fun. The next 4 blogs are aimed at informing and guiding you through 4 critical commissioning projects that will ensure your cruising is the smoothest.

Think Mechanical Maintenance 1st!

Consider a boats make up similiar to a human body. With out electricity we dont funtion and with out proper circulation we fail. So let's look at these primary systems and perform a good inspection.

Looking at the big picture by hauling the vessel out of the water is critical. Making sure to turn off all generators and a/c systems before hand to avoid the risk of burning them up as they gasp for water. Check the bottom making sure all the barnacles and growth is cleaned off.

Bottom zincs on your hull, drives, shafts and trim tabs need to be at least %50. Remember these zincs are your boats shields against electrolysis. When they expired the electricity from the salt water will start to eat away at your boats inner metal components. Beware!

How do your propellers look? Even the smallest nick or bend will cause vibration issues and severely disturb performance speed, even barnacles and growth. I recommend removing the propellers and having them finished and balanced properly to achieve maximum rpm. Oh yeah grease the spline before installing to avoid unnecessary friction.

How are your batteries? Disconnect all batteries, clean them with soda water and a wire brush before reconnecting and checking them for optimal charge-batteries do need replacing periodically and if one is dead connecting to a series of batteries they all will be dead soon so pull and replace.

How does your steering system look? Check for drips or leaks and top off the lubricant. Check packing boxes to make sure there is no damage.

A/C systems servicing. In a constantly warm enviroment a/c many times never stop and often need re-pressurizing and raw water lines flushed with barnacle buster (green technology) to clear out growth.

Check all hose fittings, replacing the corroded ones with new ones. Lubricate all sea cock levers (raw water intake valves) exercise them back and forth. Make sure strainer baskets are clean and their housings are free of barnacles and growth.

Make sure all main engine sea strainers are clear of growth and obstructions.

Remember! Cooling water to your 2 vital mechanical systems (engine and air conditioning) is like blood circulation to your heart. By assuring unrestricted water flow you'll be way cooler and cost effectiveness.

Light Bulbs! Turn all lights on including Navigation Lights, checking for any burnt out bulbs and replace.

Bilges are Key! Before I buy a boat I check here 1st and foremost because you can quickly learn a vessels mechanical health by residue found. Trace any leaks back to their culprit and replace seals where necessary. Remove any water, sludge or oil from the bilge (dispose of properly in a hazardous waste area) clean with degrease the bilge and make sure all bilge pumps are running properly and not gummed up. Don't hesitate to replace a bilge pump as they do expire and are well worth the piece of mind when all else fails.

Sump boxes clean up well with water and bleach, let it sit for a few hours.

Dump your fresh water tank and refill, I never recommend drinking water from your fresh water tank as it is never fresh, many times treating the tank with a bromine tablet is good to keep growth and that egg smell away.

Dump your black water tank and treat with a eco friendly solution that will keep the smell fresh and bacteria down.

Changing your engine oil is key and the best way to preserve the life of your engine, run the engine a few minutes before dumping the pan to lower the oil viscosity. Also rub oil on the filter gasket, this will allow it to seat better, check for leaks while it's running.

Service your generator if needed, replacing oil and all filters to assure your getting electricity when out island. I've found not having electricity and hot water at sea severely compromises the relationship with my girlfriend.

More to come...stand bye

Shipboard Safety Officers-The Real Scoop

What is a Shipboard Safety Officer? Who needs one?

Typically commercial yachts and ships over 500 gross tons are required to have s ship board saftey officer. This is a mandated training requirement set by (ISM) International Safety Management. The on board member will usually attend a 3-4 day class where he or she will be trained on the following procedures and protocols.

General duties of the safety officer

Introduction to the ISM code

Onboard safety management systems

Legislative background

Careful review of methods of reporting and recording ISM info

Accident investigation

Creating a safety culture on board

Carrying safety audits

Hazard identification

Employer duties

The course aims to teach proper code for Safe and Working practices and should meet the IMO Model Course 3.11. and STCW A-II/2 and A-III/3.

Typically this officer shouldn't be the captain or the medical person on board and is usually the Officer of the Watch. It's mandated that safety officers on commercial vessels attain 2 years of consecutive sea service, if aboard a tank ship only 6 months is needed.

This course is given in the UK, US and various other MCA training facilities. This ticket gives a candidate nice leverage when job hunting allowing them to be much more versatile.

PAINT FUSION NEW TECHNOLOGY

281 foot Direktors "Cake Walk" made a splash last year as the US's largest pleasure yacht built. From the initial blue print, a mission to create a vessel of strength and eloquence ensued putting a great deal of Americans and small businesses to work. The Finish: An uncompromising modern classic ship that lays down the standard for US luxury ship building. Excellent fairing work is evident in how the ships flag blue hull rolls creating a near perfect lateral reflection 281 feet long. Wow.

It's on this hull that a new technology is debuting, Awls Grip's new Controlled Fusion Paint System. The new paint system, taking effect at the molecular level, bonds the primer coat to the substrate/top coat fusing the two layers to create one dense layer extending paint life significantly while removing the need to re-sand upon re coat. The set up time is 7 days. I would have known nothing about this if it weren't for my good friend Franky Schubach, Cake Walk's finest Dive Master. Thanks Frank for the tour and shot to the boys for keeping the metals so bliggidy bright. (pic below)

New strides in nano technology has developed a system which eliminate water spots and etching from glass to provide a crystal clear substrate intolerant to water beading and spotting completely. The durability last between 14-24 months guranteed when performed by an application specialist. This is a very big advancement when considering how many hours a typical crew member spend detailing windows each day? If this time was eliminated would the service or other needed areas concerning your boat improve?

Our licensed and trained specialist are here to remove the maintenance and upkeep of your yachts glass windows by delivering a 2-step finishing and sealing system that will provide a friction less ultra clear substrate aboard your vessel.

Windows aboard a yacht are the lens for discovery that when properly maintained provide captains, owners and charter guest with a 20/20 view of some of the most enchanting places on earth. Many hard to reach windows make it nearly impossible and dangerous for crew to detail properly everyday especially when things get busy. Our maintenance free technology eliminates this to covers your crew efficiently and effectively. Call for a Free Quote!

The following email is a very moving account of how in only seconds a watch keepers attention to details can save lives. This is my twin brother's personal account of a day spent as 1st officer on a commercial tanker skirting the coast of Puerto Rico last week.

Jan 30th 2011

From: 1st Officer Alec Cunningham

To: Josh Cunningham

We saved two human lives yesterday.

At the turn of the watch, simply by chance, a needle in a haystack, I spotted the figure of a very small boat off the horizon. Visible for a few seconds at a time only. Situation in some ways is consistent with a struggling and desperate coastal fishing economy. But altogether stinks badly of trouble. Reluctant to turn a 28,000 ton ship around for someone that might just be drift fishing. Checked the chart, middle of nowhere. 3,000 feet of water 70 miles north of the Mona Passage between Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Ship blowing by them at 18 knots, burning feeling in my gut that they need help but can’t make out their movements with binoculars just the dark human shapes. One might or might not be standing up. Can’t say for certain.

Called Captain but unable to reach him because he is out of his office, in the gym or out on the deck. Drifting boat now at this point behind us and almost out of sight. Ship already delayed sailing San Juan, tight schedules and ever observant of fuel cost cutting pressure from the company. Down on my knees with the binoculars steadied on the rail looking aft. Can see one body standing up but too far away to see arms on him. Thought I might have seen a piece of clothing wave up and down. Overwhelming and unbearable feeling of guilt. Made a decision to turn back at any cost. Called for the lookout to go into hand steering with right 10 degrees of rudder.

Commence a round turn, ship starts to shutter in small convulsions from turning at full sea speed. Captain to the bridge immediately. Informed of the situation he backs me and rings the General Alarm. All crew muster. Relieved of the con, bull horn in hand, I head back aft to instruct crew and to put into motion a plan should the small boat be a security or safety threat. First approach found two lethargic men with life jackets in a 10 foot homemade wooden fishing boat with an outboard motor, bailing out their boat which was taking on water at an alarming rate.

Much harder to control a 720 foot ship than one might expect and maneuvering is very precarious in an open sea. We got within 300 feet and fired a rocket line with 700 feet of floating line. A lucky shot that went straight across their bow. Lowered the pilot ladder, first man falls off the ladder and back into the boat, unable to muster the strength to climb our 45 feet of free board. Gets it on the 2nd attempt. One collapses on deck when finally aboard. 2 hours to get them on board. Moved them to the hospital on board in the after house. No shortage of finding, in the ship’s compliment of 28 crew, a Spanish translator. Treated them for severe dehydration and shock. Reported to be Puerto Ricans that left 2 days ago to go fishing when their motor died they continued to drift with no idea of where they were and even more surprised to find they had drifted 120 miles. Boat started to take on water when a fiberglass over wood patch gave.

They had been bailing for 24 hours without stopping. They had made a pack between each other to stop bailing and accept death at sunset, which was to occur in 1.5 hours after we spotted them. They reported a shark stalking them the entire day that was as long as the boat. Also two black whales that rolled so close to them that the spray from its blow hole covered them with the misty stink of fish, which would not leave their clothes. They reported a mysterious “all white whale” that came out of the water nose up and then back down. Unusual to see a white wale below 45 degrees North but the act they describe is common of “spy hopping” which whales are known to do when investigating objects on the surface so I credit their story. They had no supplies, had thrown all their fishing gear and a large catch of fish overboard a day ago to lighten the load on the little boat…it wouldn’t have mattered because both were exhausted and soon to give up the effort to keep the boat afloat.

Vital signs slightly elevated body temp low. One speaks broken English and constantly loosing control of his eye movements as they roll awkwardly into the back of his head, he drifts in and out of sleep. Clothes are saturated with the most unpleasant smell of salt water, fish, body odor and urine. Feet are swollen with toe nails starting to lift from the skin. Arms and neck on the verge of third degree burns.

The other has bulging blood shot eyes, unflinching and is reported by his friend to be psychotic usually medicated with Prozac and xanex and without these medications should be considered a danger to others and himself. Great. Steward department picks two vacant crew rooms and bolt locks are fashioned to the outside and the hallway is put on a 24 hour manned watch. I give him Diazepam, should do. Coast Guard informed, boat set adrift where it probably sank within hours. Captain donates some of his old clothes. They shower and he allows them to call their next of kin on the Sat phone. Unforgettable phone call from the Captains office.

Both rooms are joined by a bathroom so they are essentially together. They slowly and painfully move around like two old people with spasms in their back muscles and legs from standing and bailing relentlessly for so many hours. I leave them for the night with a large trash bag of an assortment of fruit, snacks and drink. The steward translates to them that I will be back at 0800 and will take them out on deck for a while for fresh air and to stretch their legs. He tells them I am the chief officer, medical officer on board and I was the one who spotted them and turned the ship. Smiles create visible pain and cracking in their lips. They thank me repeatedly in Spanish as we shake hands. One will not let go of my hand and forearm as I try to back out of the room, a bit awkward uncomfortable long minute but understandable considering what they have gone through.

The small derelict fishing boat that was cast adrift was their livelihood and had a new $3,000 outboard motor purchased the day before they left. It’s his only way of making a living on the Rincon coast of Puerto Rico. His first child, a son, was born January 13th, two weeks ago. I will post a donations sheet in the galley for any crew wanting to contribute something against their next week’s draw. Captain will try to spin a PR motive for the company to pay for their flight back, I’ll give them a couple hundred for travel.

A Right Whale in the St. John’s River in Jacksonville delayed me joining the ship and put us behind schedule, a fire that broke out on the shore terminal crane in San Juan delayed us further from sailing. The ship’s routine schedule is such that it would normally transit these waters in the middle of night. By chance we passed in day light hours. By chance it was near sundown with reduced glare and good visibility. By chance the weather was clear. By chance the shark lost interest and the whale didn’t surface directly under their poorly constructed wooden boat.

Sunday morning now. Sunrise finds us 100 miles north of the Turks and Caicos and leaves me wondering how far does chance go before it becomes something else?

One can never underestimate the importance of proper circulation and electrical distribution demanded by our bodies to keep us fit and alert. The same can be said about a pleasure yacht's inner workings designed to cool and connect. When in balance all systems work together to provide the performance standards dreamed of by the designer and ship manufacturer. But it seems no matter how spot on your yacht's preventative maintenance program is after 5 years circulation failure is inevitable and like in humans, it usually has a domino effect of destruction on other systems in line.

This 5-year mark often starts with a high pressure alarm, a fried pump starved for water or a mucked up high water sensor causing a pump to run continuously creating unessessary heat and wasted energy. Despite many owners wanting to believe nothing is suppose to break the reality is all pumps, fittings and valves do have a shelf life that even the finest tuned maintenance program cannot carry out indefinitely.

Being in tune and prepared for this 5 year marks will keep you ahead of cost and ready when these failures start to occur. Below are a few solid tips we've learned from our experience to keep you ahead of the game.

Keep raw water strainers and intake baskets clean and free of growth weekly to achieve optimal circulation. Remember high temperature=high growth so be ready in the summer. Clean, unrestricted intake passages will keep pressure and heat of your boat's cooling pumps akin to keeping your cholesterol low to take pressure off of your heart.

Feeling and listening to these pumps can tell you if they are laboring hot or if sick. Pumps will run for months hot before breaking down.

Humidity and hydro carbons in bilges break down electrical connections and working sensors so make sure your bilge are dry weekly. Don't be afraid to run engine blowers on low continously to remove moisture which can set off glass sensors such as tach indicators incorrectly.

Consider an Arid Bilge System it's a smart add on consisting of small, customized pickups that are placed throughout the different bilge compartments to remove all residual water. Once the water is gone, the system maintains the bilges bone dry.

Treat funky sump boxes with bleach and water, let it sit for an hour to break down fungus and loosen up the float switch and clean up the pump intake, improving suction.

Stay away from nylon fittings on water pumps which will break. Pay an extra 75 cents and go with brass fittings for added sleep at night as these will not break.

Replace rusting hose fittings with stainless steal ones and make sure electrical connections are sealed, crimped and taped up properly to avoid corrosion.

Have your a/c system is de-scaled annually to remove hard growth from the cooling lines. This will extend the life of your compressors dramatically and reduce the heat in the engine room.

A vessel's shine and show finish is a powerful image which sets your boat aside from the rest. Cosmetic integrity is highly dependent on the way the vessel is cared for. The shelf life of your yachts paint finish or gel coat can be quicky deminished when failing to address the common offenders.

Polishing and Wax Damage

Cause: Aggressive polishing by untrained crew welding high speed polishers can cut deep lines into your boats painted and gel-coat surfaces. Once fouled these areas need polishing and waxing more regularly and micro finished with a finer product to close substrate.

Solution:

A proper wash down before polishing is critical in removing dirt and abrasive trash on paint and gel coat substraits. If not removed these elements will etch and scratch the paint upon polishing.

I recommend starting with the least aggressive product to remove hazing and oxidization, do a test spot, if the oxidization is not removed to full clarity use a more coarse product. Avoid using silicon based waxes. Remember after cutting out oxidization micro finishing is neccessary to close up substraite pores. This is often neglected as freshly cut paint looks nice and shiny but is open and exposed.

Strong wax stripping agents or abrasive scourers will damage the paint and gel-coat. Remove them from your deck supplies and keep in the engine room.

A nano-polymer is recommended to maintain surface protection. When used on a periodic base the life span of your paint job is drastically increased by keeping contaminants from entering the substrate.

Always hire trained, licensed crew to do polish work. Trained cosmetic detail specialist keep buffer speeds under 2,500 rpm. Be desecrationary when hiring anyone to polish or refinish your boat. Listen intently to the product types, steps and procedures. Be leery of under bidders as they usually come with in-experienced and careless crews totting cheap abrasive products.

Fender Scratches and Abrasions

Cause: Sand and abrasive dirt on the surfaces of your fender socks or bare fenders will scratch your yachts beautiful paint and gel coat surfaces as they rub the paint constantly applying pressure.

Solution:

Use fender socks to cover your naked fenders.

Wash, clean and care for the fender socks covering your fenders to free them of abrasive dirt. This happens commonly when a boat is docked in one location for a long period of time.

It's important to place fenders higher up on the piling where the surface are often much cleaner.

New peel able coatings are being designed that adhere to the painted or gel coat surface to protect fender rub and scratches. Make sure you check with the paint manufacturers first.

Giving the hull a thorough wash down is imperative to removing dirt and abrasive elements that will press into the paint if not removed.

Blisters

Cause: Galvanic reaction (electric currents being created by chemical reactions between two dissimilar metals) seen as bubbles forming under the paint.

Solution:

Apply Tefgel coating to all metal on metal fittings during maintenance periods and where possible, change non load bearing stainless bolts for nylon ones or use Delrin (polyoxymethylene) washers. This prevents dis-similar metals from touching one another.

Apply Boeshield anti-water penetration spray to all hand rail base to prevent water seepage and rust emittance.

Chips and Scratches

Cause: Common docking accidents caused by tenders colliding with swim platforms or when tying up along side. Also when metal objects like deck poles or product cans slam into the paint or sub strait.

Solution:

Mindfulness when dragging water hoses or electrical cords across painted surfaces. These collect small rock fragments from the yard or docks concrete that will scratch painted or gel coat surfaces.

When in doubt about a repair always consult the paint or yacht manufacturer.

Use a stripling paint method it's recommended above strait paint strokes.

When refairing or repainting keep it as small and contained as possible to minimize conflicts in shade and shine of the original painted surface near by.

"Reactive boat maintenance costs boat loads"-John Doe

Considering the excessive cost of having a yacht painted these days it pays to stay on top of your yachts paint and gel-coat surfaces. Two of the biggest offenders are..

MOST COMMON DIRT AND SALT MARKS

Exhaust Fumes

Grease

Dirt

Seawater

Solutions for cleaning these foul elements include..

Warm or hot water will disolve any salt quickly, many boat soaps have a a pH and are too aggressive like Orphine and traditional dish soap, gel soaps are kind to your vessels flat surfaces and many times cheaper.

Avoid anything with too high of pH or two low, pH7 is neutral.

Long sea journeys may need a bit of vinegar thrown into the bucket to give that much needed punch in removing the hard crystalized salt, 1 to 9 is a prefered mix ratio.

When it comes to removing grease a citrus cleaner like goo gone works well but make sure you check with the manufactuer first. Alcohol works well sometimes but use a microfiber towl.

When cleaning up near the hot tub or on the fore deck make sure sunscreen is removed before it backs in to the paint.

Diluted bleach is good for removing fish blood but remember it does oxidize the paint so use it seldom.

MOST COMMON WEAR AND TEAR OF PAINT AND GEL-COAT

General use

Over exposure to harmful UV light degrading the surface

WAYS TO PROTECT

Regular, gentle cleaning to prevent the need for abrasion of the surfaces with more aggressive cleaning products.

UV sunlight is the second highest causes of paint and gel-coat breakdown after physical cause. A good UV wax or polish like Awlcare needs to be applied every three months. 3m liquid wax is also a good paint perserver

All surfaces should be rinsed thoroughlybefore washing and do not use excessive amounts of soap when washing down your boat.

Apply a regular polymer paste/liquid treatment that is ealed with a nano-lacquer surface protection. This needs to be done before the gloss on the existing paint has detriourated or you will only be performing damag limitation rather than protection. (remember to tell paint contractors if a polymer has been used, it can foul a repainting process)

There are 10 other vessels just like yours on the market, same make, model and price range. What steps or actions will set your vessel ahead of the rest when shown or validate a higher sale price? Let's start with the curbside appeal.

1) Shine-"Clean Boats Sell" "Shiny Boats Sell Faster" Having the paint or gel-coat on your vessel polished or refinished back to it's original clarity and shine is one of the most important actions taken to enhance a vessels value and support it's sale price. This is the buyers 1st impression.

2) Decks- Having the teak decks sanded with a 2-step process will bring back the natural oils and original finish while sealing up the grain from outside dirt and debree. Like wise having older non-skid decks repainted will enhance the new buyers first walk around experience.

3) Metals or Bright Work-"Set the Hook" Making sure all exterior metals have been properly polished and shined assures the buyer of the vessel's bristol clean upkeep and on-going maintenance program.

4) Windows- Having all exterior glass windows and isinglass micro-finished to remove fine scratches and water stains will create that perfect mirror reflection adding instant pop to the appearance.

5) Rust Removal-"Rust is the slowest burning Fire" Rust is a red flag that when seen will have the buyer running for the hills. Removing rust stains from metal on metal fittings and storage compartments is critical.

6) Canvas Coverings- Canvas coverings and snap downs often show age, catch mold and the harsh affliction from the sun. If deep cleaning and mold treatment cannot restore these covers re-canvasing is an excellent idea.

7) Engine Room-The muscle behind your boat lies here and if your engines have been laboring because of poor maintenance or high hours the evidence will be plastered through out. Deep cleaning of the engine room with a "white glove" approach will remove oil stains, rust and smell that can potentially kill a sale. Smart buyers will look in the bilges and under the engines.

8) Interior Carpets/Upholstery-Professional steam cleaning of interior carpets and upholstery will remove mold and embedded smells trapped over time and bring back optimal color and feel. Running a dehumidifier inside a boat while it's for sale is a great idea to reduce humidity and smell. "Smell=no sale"

9) Initial Survey-Having your own private survey will help identify short-comings before the buyer's survey arrives allowing you the chance to address any unforeseen issues and maximize the cruising performance should any kinks exist.

10) Show Time! Create emotion. Before an important showing open up the boat like it was on charter off the Turks and Caicos bank. Turn on some tunes, light the plasma up with a good tv program and put all the cushions out, turn on the electronics and a/c down to a low temp, make the potential buyers feel like they already own the boat:)

Cut yacht expenses while sitting for Sale!

I've often heard "the happiest days of a yachtsman's life are the day he buys his boat and the day he sells it." I'd like to think all the fine islands, fishing, and tangerine fingers spread out over a falling sunset would give back certain equity to the latter feelings of exasperation. But owning a boat can truly be expensive at times. When it comes to selling a boat, important decisions made up front can save big money while expediting the sale's process.

When a boat is for sale in US waters its private-use status is restricted and the boat literally sits for sale. A yacht for sale in this market can take upwards of a year to sell, depending on the price point__yet costs don't stop. Many vessels in proper working order don't neccesarily need a full-time captain, crew and living costs associated, if the boat is not moving. Forging a relationship with a trusted, land-based yacht management team (service affiliated) can save owners big money while guaranteeing "show readiness" at any given time.

marine professionals

Freedom Yacht Management is a service-driven, clean-and-care company, extending to brokers and owners the very best cost-reduction strategy, coupled with the quickest logistical path to the sale of your boat. Staffed with licensed captains and expert detailers, our service teams put your vessel on a pedestal for show, while presenting a trusted impression and name to the next buyer.

Freedom Yacht Management delivers local knowledge and discounts to all our clients because our goal is to keep people boating. I remember 14 years ago waxing a 50 ft Hatteras by hand with 3m cleaner wax after it had just came out on the shelf, what a unique product at the time however wouldn't be allowed on most yachts now. I remember not having a makita or proper wool pad just sheer elbow grease and what seemed liked miles of hull ahead.

Thankfully enough products and gel-coat and paint finishes have been refined allowing for a higher polished shine. With the developments in nano science, mineral deposits in compounds used to strip away decaying paint or gelcoat have gotten much smaller and finerthe higher quality compounds often emulsify under heat and pressure instead of pushing deep embedded sand particles and dirt into your vessels lovely finish, creating big swirl marks. When these high quality polishes are used with high quality wool buffing pads with wool textures softening as you move to the finishing steps the polishing perfection is achieved.

Before having your boat waxed, compounded or polished ask the detailing company exactly what products will be used and make sure they are using them. A common trick by unprofessionaly detailing services is to use very cheap product that cut into the cometics surfaces and don't finish them out, often applying a cheap wax bought in bulk. When a gel-coat or paint surface is cut to remove hazing or oxidization it is imperitive that it is followed up by a microfinishing step that will close up the pores and a strong wax to protect from airborne contaminants.

Freedom Yacht Management is a leader in cosmetic polishing and re-finishing using the best marine products available to achieve lasting shine and protection.

We've seemed to outsource ourselves out of millions of jobs many of which may never return.

"In an economy so dire it's imperative that we as American Yachting Professionals are encouraging owners to buy from the fine American ship builders still working and operating within our borders. "

Have you ever considered, "The next vessel I sell could be creating jobs for America?"

This is exactly what happens when owners elect to buy newly built American yachts over foreign product. Cleaning services for carpets done right

Busy charter seasons, constant guest and crew traffic aboard yachts can really wear down carpet presentation and show condition not to mention add thousands of microorganisms including dust mites and bacteria. Its critical to keep your carpets clean not only to promote better health, but also to deliver a clean look and smell. Conventional vacuuming will only remove lent and dust, professional steam cleaning is a routine maintenance must, recommended every 6 months.

Treating premium shag and lay carpet is a delicate task, one that takes detail and attention. Freedom Yacht Management applies the following 3-step process to bring out the best in for your vessel's show condition

Freedom 3-step carpet treatment

Step #1 – Carpet pre-treatment. This is a critical step in cleaning your carpets. Here we spray all carpets with solution before the cleaning process. This will allow any embedded dirt, stains or spots to come out when we initiating the cleaning process.

Step #2 – Carpet Cleaning. Here is where the process delivers a new carpet like finish, successfully and efficiently removing the dirt, dust and grease from your carpets. We utilize the process of steam cleaning to remove the dirt and oils deep down at the base of the carpet fibers. This process will not harm your carpet and in fact, carpet manufactures recommend steam cleaning as the method for cleaning their products.

Step #3 – Neutralizing your carpet and removing chemical residue. This is the final step in our process making will your carpet feel soft and smelling fresh for your next important charter or showing.

Untangle the Hassles of Yacht Ownership

ENTER: 2010

The gods of our industries regulatory bodies are not making things any easier with the increasingly strict guidelines for running a vessel. Whether MCA or USCG, heaps of regulative paper work builds on a captain's desk waiting for processing, a critical charter starts tomorrow and the mate is missing.

In our new yachteconomy captains and owners see certain value in outsourcing a large portion of the administrative management to land-based companies and focusing on what they do best, run and maintain the vessel to the highest caliber while exceeding guest and owner expectations.

The land based companies they're partnering with staff qualified licensed professionals, engineers and accountants who can assist on a day to day basis to alleviate the hassle. The results are a yachting program that is safe, efficient and maximizes the vessel worth every day the flag rises with the sun.

Choosing a management company with connections to facilitate shore-based issues is critical as they can usually get the very best pricing and accommodations. A misconception about yacht management is that companies charge a fortune to provide a range of services, which may not be the need of every yacht. In actuality owners can choose just the areas where expertise is needed.

Finding a trusted Yacht Management company before the purchase of a vessel is solid assurance that your interest is being protected through the buy and dealing table. Yacht Management Companies can guarantee that the safety, staffing and registration process is initiated promptly and legally to get the boat out for the owners enjoyment sooner than later.

In regard to new builds or refits, having a management company to get involved a year before delivery is smart. This helps to ensure the details of all system re-workings are ironed out smooth and are in-line with safety regulations. When executed properly project development to program management is stream lined with maximum efficiency and trusting relationship properly secured.

On July 1, 2010, Charlie Crist signed a piece of legislature that packed a much needed punch for the marine industry of South Florida. Freedom to own American was delivered when a maximum sales tax cap of $18,000 was ushered into effect on pleasure vessels. What was 6% of total value is now $18,000 flat, last year the owner of a 3 million dollar vessel being sold in Florida would pay $180,000 today $18,000, wow!!

South Florida with its proximity to the islands, best brokers, service techntians, products, fresh food, cold beer and beautiful women is regarded as a premium area in which to berth a yacht. Below are just a few reason why many yacht owners choose to keep their yachts in this state:

· A few hours from the Bahamas and Florida Keys

·	Beautiful Beaches and Plenty of private and resort dockage
·	Yachting is the right time all year around
· Cradle of yacht innovation and tech support

With jobs desperately needed here in South Florida, this law is bound to breath life back into the marine industry as owners no longer have to hide under a foreign flag. No foreign company set up and managed, no need to get the boat out of US waters every year and no restrictions on sale-ability. Also it's a critical start to pave the bridge between truly accomodating mega yachts (often dodging Florida because of the head aches, high berthing costs and immigration hassle) Brian Muston creator of Yacht Support USA knows well the amount of money and jobs Florda is loosing to these hassles. Let's band together and bring in the new South Florida Yachting Scene. -Josh Cunningham (owner) FreedomYachtManagement.com

You might want to take your shoes off before you enter this mecca of science and discovery just to honor the men who gave their life to developing it and a tip for the museum curator who layed out such a wonderful display.

The museum, clean, organized and extremely accurate exhibits the most far reaching developments in science and of man given to this earth. It would take 3 days to go through and read everything but many real life replicas and models are there before you to guide the way. Kicking off with ships starting in the Norse time 790 AD and evolving into the modern day super tanker. All the hard lessons learned in between this sweeping span of 2000 years is on hand for your discovery in just 100 yard of walking distance, ship composition, construction, steering and design, sail and propultion techniques (cool model sailboats to play with) and on board saftey and survival developments. Many American discoveries and technologies are on display too.

Having seen the fury of the sea myself and remembering it being framed so eloquently by Sir Francis Drake "Fear by day, Terror by night". I could only stand back, take a sip of my warm Starbucks red eye and gawk at the small crafts developed by the Polynesians and Arawak Indians and imagine paddling off for an island or body of water 100's to 1000's of miles away with such minimal protection and security, or the Norse setting sail for modern day Maine in a bit more than a wooden skiff and fabric sails, salted meats but I guess in those days giants did walk the earth.-Josh Cunningham (owner) FreedomYachtManagement.com

Product Knowledge when cleaning a Yacht is Crucial

I once watched a boat washer from XYZ company tramp over the nicely shinned brow of a brand new Sunseeker Predator.

The boat was getting ready for it's first cruise with it's new owner yet was covered with yard dust from a post buy shake down.

This young man never considered the effect of what he was about to do and branded a white hard bristle brush and a fresh bottle of Clorox bleach/bathroom cleaner, taking aim on the most noticeable part of the boat to clean. I knew what would happen next and it hurt me to watch as he applied this bleach to the hard bristle brush and then to the freshly polished gel-coat.

This young man had no idea what he was doing or applying, he had been sent there by a manager that didn't have much more knowledge or training and the end result would cost the boat owner far more than the wash he was getting after he paid for FYM to come in and repair his scratched and cut open surfaces back to new.

Everyone is eager to start a detailing company yet few consider the process down to the chemical agents and method of applications, in lies the difference. Although strong detergents might bring a boat up white, the real damage is at a microscopic level when the surface is burnt and cut open making it much easier for dirt, grim and oxidization to collect.

Know your Product! Soft soaps and soft (blue ) bristle brushes are an excellent start for a yachts initial cleaning program. Yachts new cosmetics are like a baby's new skin and need to be treated the same.
