Practically blinded by dust from the second helicopter, the Iraqis were all but taken out of the fight from the start, so Chaney, Sgt. 1st Class Michael D. Lindsay and Staff Sgt. Jarion Halbisengibbs led a charge against the building where the hostile fire was originating. Halbisengibbs threw in a fragmentation grenade, killing two, and the soldiers rushed in. Lindsay was hit in the throat by an AK-47 round, and Chaney took a hit to the pelvis. Then both were thrown from the doorway by a grenade blast. Lindsay, who couldn’t raise his rifle, fired at the enemy with his pistol. Chaney couldn’t feel his legs, but he kept firing, killing a jihadi. Halbisengibbs “continued to clear the structure in complete darkness as his night vision goggles and personal radio were all destroyed by enemy gunfire at point blank range,” the official narrative read. He was shot in the thumb and knocked down by a grenade blast but continued fighting, killing another terrorist. As he moved back to the courtyard to protect his wounded comrades, Halbisengibbs was shot through the abdomen but managed to kill another jihadi on his way to the ground. He then directed the Iraqi police to finish the fight. Obaeideah was killed, along with 12 other insurgents, six by Halbisengibbs.

All three Green Berets have recovered from their injuries. Chaney and Lindsay were each awarded the Silver Star; Halbisengibbs received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Army’s second highest combat medal.

Every year the festival focuses on one member of NATO. At the 56th festival this year, the country in focus is the Czech Republic as the first state of the former Eastern bloc.

Dvorakova, a graduate from the Military Academy in Vyskov, south Moravia, previously participated in a military mission in Kosovo. At present she works at the Czech President’s Military Office.

She is only the second queen of the Azalea festival chosen from the military ranks, after last year’s crowning of a Dutch officer. Before, the title always went to civilians, including the daughters of two U.S. presidents.

Dvorakova told journalists that her duties as the Azalea Queen will take her to schools, hospitals and to public meetings where she is expected to present her homeland.

Norfolk secondary school students will hold a festival discussion forum focusing on the 1968 Prague Spring communist reform movement and its suppression by the Warsaw Pact troops.

Military and political experts from NATO countries will hold a meeting as well.

During the festival opening ceremony, Admiral Luciano Zapata, allied deputy commander for transformation based in Norfolk, praised the Czechs’ pro-democracy efforts in 1968 and their non-violent switch to democracy after 1989.

He recalled that the Czech Republic has been an active member of NATO for ten years.

Czech deputy defence minister Frantisek Padelek said that by joining NATO the Czech Republic accepted its share of responsibility for the defence of allies and democratic principles.

In this connection he mentioned Czech participation in the allied missions in Kosovo and Afghanistan, and last year’s signature of the Czech-U.S. treaty on a U.S. missile defence radar installation on Czech soil.

On May 6, 2009 it will be 64 years since the end of WWII came to Plze? and the borderlands of South-Western Bohemia.

The Czech lands spent more time under Nazi occupation than anywhere else. They were occupied by Hitler’s Germany in two stages (October 1938 and March 1939) and were among the last places to be completely liberated, with remnants of the German army continuing to fight in Prague for several days after the official capitulation.
Most of the Czech lands were liberated by Soviet red army troops advancing from the east, but American soldiers under the command of General George S. Patton were first to reach south-western Bohemia, and they decisively liberated Plze? itself (after an uprising led by Škoda factory workers on the 5th May) early on the morning of the 6th….  read all here

Yesterday marked the 60th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Airlift, which saw the Western allies provide 2.3 million tons of supplies to the 2.5 million citizens of the blockaded West Berlin. Here, some veterans of the almost 280,000 airlift missions pose in front of a DC-3 “Rosinenbomber” (Candy Bomber) aircraft at Berlin’s Schönefeld Airport. Tempelhof, the airport where the Airlift was originally conducted, closed late last year.
