A lot of readers sometimes get confused on various freelance writing jobs posted here and in some freelance writing websites & blogs.

Perhaps the first question that they have in their minds is how to apply for craigslist jobs. Believe me – that was also my first question when I first got into Manila Craigslist. Over the months, I’ve managed to send emails to dozens of possible employers. However, always brace yourself for possible rejections or possible not-answered emails. But freelancing goes with it, I believe.

Here are some things to keep in mind when applying for craigslist jobs.

Follow Instructions

A lot of these jobs often have instructions as to what to put in your subject line or what sort of information you need to send to them. A clear violation of these instructions will surely make you look bad because you cannot follow simple instructions. When it says to put some kind of weird phrase in your subject line, they are probably checking if you truly read the whole thing AND you really are applying for the job. Otherwise, you’d sound very canned. Simply put: don’t just copy and paste one email from the other.

Check the Job Details

Descriptions say a lot. Virtual assistants are not always the same with freelance writers, so check the job description. Most of the time, you would also read the rates in the description itself. If you think that the pay is low, then don’t send an email anymore, and then try to haggle the rates up. Value yourself and move on to the next job listing.

Job details usually give you an overview of the whole project. Long-term, short-term projects and a lot of other useful information. Always remember that fishy-looking job listings can easily be spotted. Be warned. Don’t be afraid to read twice or thrice!

Prepare a Customized Letter/Email

So you’ve seen that job listing. Perfect. Now read it. If it says that you need to copy paste your whole resume in the email’s body, then do it. In addition, you can also put a little message above it – somewhat like a summary. Highlight your best assets, tell the potential client that you’ve seen his/her post in craigslist and write what you can do. Always remember to proofread afterwards! Grammar mistakes are a no-no. You are applying for a writing job. Stick to formal English and use capital letters and punctuation marks properly. Copying and pasting is fine, but be sure to change the job details and the addressee to the one you’re really applying for.

Press Send…and Wait

Perhaps waiting is the worst thing. You can go on for days, weeks and even months to be contacted. Most of the time, it can be sometime between 3 to 5 days. I’ve had clients who reply after a couple of weeks. It takes patience to wait, actually, but there’s also no harm in sending to dozens of other gigs. There are big chances that others would not reply at all when they’ve seen other freelance writers, but more often than not, somebody would definitely email you back.

BUT WAIT…Where’s the email address??

Craigslist posts have email addresses displayed on the upper left of the whole page. You can typically see it under the title. Sometimes, clients would prefer to post the contact details within the body itself, so don’t forget to read, read, and read.

Bottom line…

…don’t be afraid to send emails and ask. It’s better to know much information than knowing none at all. Ask your potential clients about the project, about the time frame and about the rates. There’s no harm in asking and in trying. Send out all those emails and hope that you’d get to bag a really good project AND a really nice client.  At the end of the day, it’s really that well-crafted email that would make you stand out from dozens of other applicants.

Once again, I’ve broken my promise of updating this site because of my depression over my former android phone.

A lot of you might wonder why I’m writing this blog. This is because, as in the title, it was only a two-week affair. As for the reason, you’d then read as you go along this blog entry.

Nevertheless, the Samsung Galaxy Spica is still one of my most wanted mobile phones. It was perfect for me. Until one fateful night…

June 12th, 2010 - it was the Philippines’ independence day. I was happily strolling around the Power Plant Mall with a very close friend when suddenly, we decided to get my dream phone – the Samsung Galaxy Spica. Trust me, this baby has everything – Android OS, touchscreen, WiFi, 3G…and the works.

She helped me buy it, with our own agreement as to how and when I’d pay her back. Nevertheless, that did not stop me from displaying that smile upon my face.

I was happy – it was love at first sight. Although Indie, as I lovingly call him, was something new for me – I had to handle him with care because of my errors while texting.

Boo.

Fast forward.

June 25th, 2010

It was a rainy night as I was waiting for a cab to take me to a friend’s house. I walked from the school’s entrance towards Power Plant Mall to wait for a cab. My umbrella was a bit small to cover me and my 2 bags full of books. That night, I looked really wasted – to think that I was about to go to my school’s party over at Jupiter street, still.

My classmate saw me, and we decided to ride the cab together since it was quite hard to get one. We got in the cab and were thankful that we finally had one. I grabbed my Spica and read the directions to my friend’s house once again, and sent her a message that I was going to her house already.

Amidst the rain, I managed to direct the way to my friend’s house. I said goodbye to my classmate in the cab, went down from the left side of the car, opened my umbrella and ran towards their gate.

Little did I know that THAT was the last time I was about to hold my beloved Indie Spica.

I was going to send a message to my friend to say that I was home – but I couldn’t find my Spica. I dumped my books, my papers, my clothes on the floor to find it – to no avail.

She finally got home, and I started to cry. I called up my friend who helped me buy my Spica, and I also cried. I called up my mom, and she also made me cry.

That was that unlucky Friday for me..

up to Monday, I still couldn’t bear seeing my Spica’s charger.

The funny thing is, the one who got my mobile phone, if it was left in the cab OR it dropped on the streets when I went out of the cab, even asked me for P5,000 just so he would return my phone. I tried calling it, and I even heard some conversations saying that it was touch screen and everything else.

He asked me a lot of questions, including where I’m from. I asked him where he got my phone, and he answered somewhere in Burgos Crossing, saying that he is from PASAY.

HOW CAN HE BE IN PASAY WHEN I JUST RODE THE CAB FROM ROCKWELL TO REPOSO/JP RIZAL?

Sh**. Seriously. He was even asking if I was alone, if I’m a student..etc.

I felt bad. I feel bad. I still am feeling bad.

He turned off my phone after saying “Sige, ayaw mo magreply, ikaw din bahala…”

I miss my Spica. Words would never express how much I loved our moment together – this lovely android phone, only to be cut short by somebody who held my Indie Spica hostage.

MORAL LESSON? Just please be careful with your things. :-S But then, if you find something that isn’t yours, don’t you think it’s more fulfilling to return it RATHER THAN actually ask that someone to pay you just for you to return it?

DISCLAIMER: I’m writing this blog because I want to say that there are still some people who can NEVER be honest enough to return what is not rightfully theirs. I have blocked my mobile number already, and am now in the process of blocking the mobile phone through NTC. I just hope he won’t use it – the whole mobile phone is set in Polish language, and not English. Haha

I don’t know about you guys, but the weather in Manila makes me feel really bad. Personally, I really don’t like the rain. Especially when my mobile phone got lost last Friday, a 2-week old Samsung Spica which I dearly loved, while it was raining around Rockwell, Makati.

The thief even asked for 5,000 pesos so he’d return my Spica.

I was still crying yesterday :-S

So if ever you buy a Samsung Spica with Nimbuzz, Parallel Kingdom (with my information, of course – my estate!!!), Stackers Lite and a whole bunch of programs and applications, it’s probably mine. Sigh.

As most of you have noticed, if there are any readers anyway, the site was left in the past for the past few months. Forgive me for my negligence – I got into law school and everything went unorganized. As for taxes regarding freelance writers, I believe that you can only file an Income Tax Return if you have registered your ‘freelance writing’ as your own business. Since you are self-employed and you want to file ITRs, then it is a must that you register your own business. Otherwise, I don’t think it is necessary.

There comes a time when even freelancers get to be so busy, that they start to drop some of the stuff that they usually do. In my case, I dropped the site updates and the writing job leads because of those other things.

I’m so sorry for not updating this site. Boo. I missed writing, really.

The real reason? I took a law entrance exam and was kind of stressed out because of waiting for the results. In addition, I also had to wait for interview and the results which made me nervous. Boo.

Anyway, starting this Monday, I’d be posting freelance writing jobs again in the site. With law school enrollment finished, I have my free time back and I can now go back to writing again.

My mind must have been shaken by the latest Philippine earthquake which hit Mindoro with a magnitude of 6.1.

The past week was certainly crazy, so I really have to apologize for not writing anything.

In a matter of hours, I decided to enlist myself for a law entrance exam. Within a few days, I needed to furnish copies of recommendation letters from my professor and other people. Upon reaching that graduate school in Makati, I then learned that I only had three days before I’d get to take my exam.

Oh, the rush.

Hence, my schedule didn’t allow me to write. I swear, I did not get the chance to write last week, and I really miss it.
