RIP Mac Tonnies

Mac Tonnies has very sadly passed away at the tragically young age of 34. Here’s an extract from UFO Mystic: “Mac Tonnies was found in his apartment this (Thursday) afternoon, apparently dead of natural causes. There was no evidence of foul play or suicide according to a close friend.”

Regrettably I didn’t have a chance to get to know this paranormal genius very well, although, out of all the text interviews I’ve done for BoA I think my one with Mac Tonnies stands out as one of the very best. I just really wish I had had the chance to do some more with what was undoubtedly one of the best young minds in UFOlogy.

Some extracts from the 1971 Doctor Who story The Daemons. According to the back story (which the Doctor explains above) mankind owes much of their knowledge and technology to the intervention of an alien species known as “the Daemons” who have been visiting the Earth on and off for the last 100, 000 years. Clearly the writer Barry Letts (aka Guy Leopold) was influenced a little by Erich von Daniken’s Chariots of the Gods.

Interestingly the “Ancient Astronaut Theory” also pops up in several other Doctor Who stories from the 1970s, most notably in 1974’s Death to the Daleks (complete with the standard Grey aliens) and 1975’s The Pyramids of Mars. In Death we’re told that an advanced race called the Exxilons taught mankind how to build and were responsible for a mysterious temple in Peru. And later in Pyramids we learn that yet another race of ETs (this time the god-like Osirans) visited the Earth seven thousand years ago and become the gods of Ancient Egypt. Oh … they built the pyramids on Mars as a prison for a renegade member of their race too.

Deeply controversial to say the least but these “jump rooms” (basically a Star Trek style teleporter) really caught my imagination. With trillions of US dollars missing from the Pentagon (and that’s according to Donald Rumsfeld) anything’s possible.

Interestingly, though, in Nick Redfern’s new book Sci Fi Secrets a whole chapter is dedicated to the US Air Force’s “Teleportation Physics Study.” According to Redfern the Air Force quietly contracted the study to Eric W. Davis of the Las Vegas based “Warp Drive Metrics” and in 2004 the US military made Davis’ report publicly available to all. Here’s a fascinating extract:

“This study was tasked with the purpose of collecting information describing the teleportation of material objects, providing a description of teleportation as it occurs in physics, its theoretical and experimental status, and a projection of potential applications. The study also consisted of a search for teleportation phenomena occurring naturally or under laboratory conditions that can be assembled into a model describing the conditions required to accomplish the transfer of objects.”

A Room 101 Interview with Timothy Good

One of my favourite interviews ever. Here's a short extract:

"Richard: In Alien Contact you interviewed Bob Lazar about his alleged experiences at S-4, a supposed ultra top-secret facility near Area-51/Groom Lake where, according to Lazar, alien technology is being studied and reverse engineered. How much of Lazar's story do you think might be true? And do you still think reverse engineering could be going on at Area-51?

Timothy Good: Lazar claimed to be a nuclear physicist. He isn't. However, he is a talented engineer and launches his own rockets and drives and maintains a jet-powered car (or used to). Definitely something odd seems to have happened to him, but I remain dubious about some of his claims. Perhaps he was exposed to S-4 (which does, or did, exist) in case he came up with some original ideas. Or it could have been an experiment to test public reaction, knowing that he would tell the media. I just don't know. It's important to bear in mind that Lazar was drugged on several occasions by the security personnel at S-4. I have no idea what’s going on there now."

Battlestar Galactica - Sci-Fi and the Terror Wars

Probably the SCI FI Worlds article I’m must proud of, there was a lot of stuff about 9/11 and its aftermath I wanted to get off my chest. It’s worth noting, though, I decided to write this one from the mainstream media ‘official’ perspective that “Bin Laden was behind 9/11” because that’s the direction the Battlestar Galactica writers seem to have been coming from.

Here's a short extract:

"Interestingly, the post-9/11 parallels are completely turned on their head in the third season. In the miniseries, as well as season one and two, the Cylons are clearly meant to represent Al Quada and fundamentalist Islam, whereas the humans clearly parallel America. However, in the shadow of the Anglo-American invasion and occupation of Iraq, these roles seem to have been somewhat reversed during season three. The bad guy Cylons become the invading westerners and the humans take the place of the Iraqi insurgency.

Much of season three takes place on what the colonials name "New Caprica": a cold, remote and hostile world that most humans decide to settle on after abandoning their vain search for Earth. However, they are eventually found and, strongly echoing real world events in Iraq, invaded and occupied by the Cylons one year later.

The Cylon invasion and occupation of New Caprica is an obvious mirror for the Iraq war, directly reflecting the conflict in several key ways. For instance, the human resistance is continually referred to as "the insurgence" by the Cylons. Also, again echoing Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, the Cylon-occupiers use torture against captured insurgents. Saul, the leader of the resistance, is so badly beaten by his Cylon captures that he even loses his right eye."

Mac Tonnies :: A Room 101 Interview with a Transhumanist

Perhaps my best ROOM 101 interview so far, a special non-UFO interview with Mac Tonnies. Tonnies is the author of After The Martian Apocalypse, an excellent book on Mars anomalies. He is perhaps better known in UFO circles, though, for his controversial cryptoterrestrial hypothesis. Both these topics, of course, were covered in-depth during his appearance on BoA: Audio, so in this interview we focused more on his views and beliefs as a Transhumanist instead. In particular, getting his take on many of the problems people have with the whole idea of Transhmanism. (You can read about my views on the topic in Doctor Who and the Robots of Death). Here is an extract:

"Richard: For people who don't know, what is "transhumanism" and why do you support the idea?

Mac Tonnies: Transhumanism is a simple blanket term for people who view technology as a means by which to augment and expand human prowess -- physically, cognitively and perhaps even spiritually. We're already knee-deep in an era of smart-drugs, genetic therapies and molecular manufacturing, so it's not exactly rash to attempt to anticipate future breakthroughs. For instance, there's reason to suspect that aging itself will eventually come to be viewed as a degenerative disease, much how we currently view diseases like polio or cancer. Given the ability to avert disease, relatively few among us will refuse to take advantage of new cures. So I suspect most of us are "closet transhumanists," whether we're explicitly familiar with the philosophical arguments or not.

Richard: Sci-Fi is littered with examples of what might be called transhumans or post-humans: from the Daleks and Cybermen of Doctor Who to the Borg and Augments of Star Trek. But how do you imagine these future creations? For example, do you think some might have a group consciousness like the Borg or maybe removed their emotions like the Cybermen?

Mac Tonnies: The Borg is a wonderful cautionary metaphor: the transhumanist equivalent to the Party in Orwell's "1984." Could transhumanist technologies be used unwisely? Certainly. But the same could be said for any technology, old or new. As with any endeavor with the potential to fundamentally alter our relationship with ourselves, we need to apply caution and forethought, which is what much of contemporary science fiction represents."

So is Mac Tonnies a real life Davros-like mad scientist or the next Arthur C. Clarke? Or maybe a bit a both? Read the full interview here and decide for yourself.

Outbreak! Predictive Programming and Sci-Fi Pandemics

Not my best SCI FI World's column but I think some of the information is important or at least interesting. Here’s the intro:

"Listening to the Alex Jones Show can sometimes be a scary ride for someone who has listened long enough to see more than a few of the filmmaker's controversial and, more often than not, dark and even disturbing prophesies come true. Most notable, of course, being 9/11 and the Terror Wars without end in the Middle East, the new Great Depression and now the global flu pandemic: like a good weatherman Jones (and his guests) forecast them all months, sometimes even years, before they went down.

It's this alarming accuracy and almost prophetic track record that should have even the most casual or sceptical of listeners more than just a little concerned about what Jones is now predicting for the next decade or so … a series of staged global pandemics and compulsory vaccinations. Each designer outbreak, and accompanying jab in the arm, deadlier than the last with the ultimate Illuminati Endgame of a worldwide population reduction of between 80 to 90%. This gigantic, almost pagan-like, sacrifice to Mother Earth that would put even Christopher Lee's Lord Summerisle (The Wicker Man, 1973) to shame. (Anyone who chooses to believe that a vaccination couldn't possibly be dangerous to your health should read this.)

What more ... as if this apocalyptic future wasn't nightmarish enough already … Jones goes further, suggesting that we've all been secretly conditioned already, practically since birth, to accept this 21st century mass culling through predictive programming in sci-fi films and television shows. The idea being, of course, that if the species is pre-programmed via fiction to sub-consciously associate apocalyptic plagues, Third World Wars and yes European or even Global police-states with the future, then when these things finally do occur the masses will be more inclined to just accept them as the natural course of history and so fail to resist them. Absurd you say … maybe but that doesn’t make it wrong, people would have said the same thing about planes being deliberately flown into buildings … perhaps only time will tell one way or another."

Blade Runner: Electronic Owls and Illuminati Symbolism

One of my favourite articles I’ve written for Richard’s Room 101 so far. Here’s an extract:

"However. it's the Tyrell Corporation's taste in architecture and wild life that really sounds the Illuminati alarm. The Tyrell Headquarters are a gigantic seven hundred stories tall pyramided shaped skyscraper. Perhaps resembling an Aztec or Ancient Egyptian pyramid.

A classic symbol associated with the Illuminati, the pyramid has always been an icon of authoritarianism and higher power. A meeting place between Heaven and Earth where great Kings and High Priests became gods in their peoples' eyes. Ridley Scott couldn't have picked a better design for the HQ of his replicants' post-modern father/maker and corporate dictator Tyrell.

In a documentary (Dangerous Days: The Making of Blade Runner) accompanying the DVD release of The Final Cut it's explained that a pyramid was chosen because in an older script Tyrell was exposed to be a replicant copy. The real Tyrell having died and been cryogenically preserved in a giant glass sarcophagus at the centre of the pyramided complex. Tyrell HQ, in effect, then was originally envisioned as being a kind of tomb like the pyramids of the Pharaohs. Be that as it may, perhaps there is a better reason for the strange choice of 2019 architecture.

As well as power and authority, the pyramid is also the perfect physical representation of compartmentalisation: the Illuminati system of control. It exists as a dumbed-down humanity at the base with a tiny enlightened capstone elite ruling on top, i.e. exactly the kind of Orwellian society seemingly reflected in Blade Runner."

A Sci-Fi Worlds Interview with Scott Burditt, Webmaster of Doomwatch.org

Created by Cybermen co-creators Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis, Doomwatch is a largely forgotten cult hit that deserves better. The series centred around a scientific government agency (Doomwatch) responsible for investigating and combating new ecological and technological hazards to mankind. The groups' leader, Doctor Spencer Quist, riddled with guilt for his part in the Manhattan Project and the creation of the Atomic Bomb.

In its time, Doomwatch was every bit as popular in Britain as Doctor Who is today, or, at the very least, Who's sister series Torchwood. Unfortunately, unlike Who, there is very little material available for fans to consume. Only four episodes were ever officially released on VHS video and only two of them ever made it to DVD. So, when I discovered Scott Burditt's excellent fan site, doomwatch.org, in a mad search for more, I was thrilled to discover that he was planning a new fanzine to celebrate the shows 40th Anniversary next year. Excited by this news, I thought it might be a good idea to do an interview with Scott to get the BoA readers up to speed with one of the most intelligent sci-fi series ever made.

Here's an interesting extract from my interview with Scott:

"Richard Thomas: The creators of Doomwatch Kit Pedlar and Gerry Davis were, of course, also the original creators of the iconic Cybermen of Doctor Who. Personally, I'm a little concerned by what is called 'Transhumanism,' a growing movement advocating upgrading the human race via genetic engineering and similar advances in technology.

It's still a very long way off but I think there needs to be some kind of international law banning the creation of a Trans or Post-human (basically a Cyberman) as well as strong laws limiting the use of the technologies involved. What do you think Doctor Quist's thoughts on the matter would be?

Scott Burditt: This is a fascinating subject. I think, as a scientist, Quist would be fascinated with the concept, but he would be appalled with any execution of it. I am sure he would argue that nature and evolution should ultimately be allowed to decide man's future development. For a start, where do you draw the line? Would only the rich be the benefactors from this? Human's would effectively would make themselves extinct as a species. Kit Pedler thought up the Cybermen, one Summer, when he was out relaxing in the garden and I am sure no one would want to foresee a future where we live as cold unfeeling machines."

A STRENGTHENED VIRUS AND A POLICE STATE

David Icke has written an excellent article on the Swine Flu virus and the serious dangers posed by the rushed through vaccine. Here is an extract:

“The H1N1 virus is called 'swine flu', but it is a laboratory-created combination of swine flu, bird flu and seasonal flu designed to justify a global programme of mass vaccinations that will inoculate a strengthened version of the virus with the intent of culling the population, short and long term …

… The potential dangers of 'swine flu' vaccine can be seen with the experience in the United States after the mass vaccination programme in 1976. This was 'justified' by the death of a single person, an Army recruit at Fort Dix in New Jersey. A panic was then generated on the basis that he had died from a swine flu strain allegedly similar to that which killed tens of millions in 1918 (another vaccine-created disaster - see item at the end of this article).

It was later established that the recruit died because 'normal' flu had turned to pneumonia and this was compounded by dehydration and heavy physical work. He collapsed on a morning run. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) admitted that not a single case of swine flu was confirmed.

Mass vaccinations for 'swine flu' followed the death of the Army recruit and led to hundreds of people developing Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disorder affecting the nervous system that triggers paralysis in legs, upper limbs and face, and an inability to breathe. At least 25 died and, longer term, the figure would have been far higher.”
