Bin Laden death "video" used as computer scam hook

BOSTON (Reuters) - Computer hackers are exploiting the fascination with the death of Osama bin Laden to spread malicious software through scams that promise access to videos of the historic killing.

One of the campaigns targets Facebook users, who receive e-mails purportedly from friends who urge them to cut and paste a string of malicious text they are told will give them access to a video of bin Laden's killing.

When users follow the directions in the e-mail, they end up granting full access to their account to hackers, said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer for anti-virus software maker F-Secure.

The hackers then use that access to propagate the virus and send spam to the users' friends, he said.

Another campaign exploiting the al Qaeda leader's death uses regular e-mails laden with tainted links that cause malicious software to be downloaded on a PC, he said.

Hackers plan such attacks -- known as phishing schemes -- to piggyback on a wide range of news events. Similar campaigns were launched with tie-ins to the British royal wedding, Japanese tsunami and the World Cup soccer competition.

"They always have something ready to go just in case," said Jeff Moss, chief security officer for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN. "There is always an earthquake or tsunami or hunger or something."

Within a few hours of the Japan earthquake, hackers had begun spamming the Internet with phishing schemes exploiting the tsunami, Moss said.

The viruses that are downloaded are often programed to steal a user's personally identifiable information, the FBI warned consumers.

Hypponen said he expected the bin Laden scams to persist for months.

"We know there is a video," he said. "We know it's not going to be released, which means there will be curious people for a long time."

Prince William and Kate Middleton have kissed twice on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after their wedding service in Westminster Abbey.

They were cheered by 500,000 well-wishers who gathered outside the palace, as RAF planes flew past in honour of the new royal couple.

In the evening the pair returned to the Palace for a dinner and dance, expected to continue into the early hours.

The couple will now be known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Police estimate a million people lined the procession route from the abbey to the palace following the wedding.

Prince William later drove his new bride back to Clarence House, following a buffet reception at Buckingham Palace, at the wheel of his father's classic blue Aston Martin, before returning to the palace in the evening.

The vehicle was decked in ribbons and balloons with "Just Wed" on the number plate.

The church service, watched by 1,900 guests, ran smoothly but the prince did struggle to place the wedding ring on the duchess's finger.

Following a long tradition, the ring has been fashioned from Welsh gold given to Prince William by the Queen.

After the couple said their vows - in which the bride did not promise to obey her husband - the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Dr Rowan Williams, declared: "I pronounce that they be man and wife together, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen."

They spent a private moment together with their families, as they signed the marriage register.

Prince William has been given the title of the Duke of Cambridge by the Queen, and Miss Middleton has become Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge on their marriage.

The duchess, who managed to keep her wedding dress a secret, wore an ivory and lace gown by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. The prince wore the red tunic of an Irish Guards colonel - his most senior honorary appointment.

European Storms Strands Passengers in Dubai

Dubai: Hoteliers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have reported an increase in occupancy levels as scores of stranded airline passengers seek temporary accommodation.

Many people have had their flights to Europe cancelled as snow and freezing temperatures continue to cause chaos at some of the continent's busiest airports including London Heathrow, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol.

Emirates and Etihad Airways have resumed flights to the British capital following the reopening of Heathrow airport.

However, travellers have been warned to expect further disruption as freezing temperatures are forecast for much of the UK in the build-up to Christmas on Saturday.

Hussain Hachem, Cluster General Manager of Al Bustan Rotana and Al Murooj Rotana, said: "The heavy snow that has caused flight disruptions to and from London is an unfortunate scenario considering the festive holidays are in a few days' time.

"Sadly, people have been stranded here in Dubai following the cancellation of flights to London, and yes, we have welcomed guests whose flights are delayed for the past two days," he said.

"We are doing everything we can, however, to make the stay of the stranded guests staying in our hotel as comfortable as possible and we sincerely hope the travel ban gets lifted soon enough, in time for the holidays."

Proving their mettle

Guy Wilkinson, Partner and General Manager at Viability Management Consultants, said travel chaos gave hoteliers the opportunity to "shine and prove their mettle".

He said: "Obviously it is great news for hotels if their occupancy is up but not so great news for the airlines having to pay for the rooms.

"If passengers are getting put up in hotels, they are in a better position than the people having to sleep on terminal floors at airports across Europe," he said.

Hoteliers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi dealt with a large backlog of passengers following the delays caused by the volcanic ash cloud earlier this year. Several hotels received kudos for the way they handled passengers who were stranded in the UAE.

"In times of disruption like this, it is a great opportunity for hotels to shine and prove their mettle," Wilkinson said.

Darroch Crawford, Managing Director of Premier Inn Hotels, Middle East, said the Premier Inn at Dubai International Airport had been at full capacity for nine nights.

He said: "The run-up to Christmas is always a busy time for the hotel but since the snow disruption in Europe we have been running at full occupancy.

"We have had a number of walk-in customers looking for accommodation but we also work closely with numerous airlines, who are putting up passengers at their own expense," he said.

"We have generally found most customers to be quite accepting of the situation. Of course, they are disappointed and concerned ... but they are appreciative of the fact that we are constantly communicating and keeping them informed."

Recently, Facebook founder named "Times' Person of the Year". Yes, Mark Zuckerberg, only 26, is the second youngest person named to the cover of Time's ritual annual.

New York: Time magazine named Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg its "person of the year" Wednesday, beating out a push by readers of the magazine for WikiLeaks maestro Julian Assange to take the honour.

Zuckerberg, only 26, is the second youngest person named to the cover of Time's ritual annual.

Managing editor Richard Stengel said Zuckerberg's social networking service was "transforming the way we live our lives every day."

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke received the honour last year. The 2008 winner was then-President-elect Barack Obama. The 2007 winner was Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Other previous winners have included Bono, President George W. Bush, and Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.

Pledge to help

Earlier this month, the young billionaire Zuckerberg, including Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, pledged to give away at least half of his fortune in a philanthropic campaign led by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.

A total of 57 billionaires now have joined The Giving Pledge, which was launched by Microsoft founder Gates and investor Buffett in June.

"People wait until late in their career to give back. But why wait when there is so much to be done?" said Zuckerberg, who gave $100 (Dh367) million in September to the beleaguered public schools of Newark, New Jersey.

"With a generation of younger folks who have thrived on the success of their companies, there is a big opportunity for many of us to give back earlier in our lifetime and see the impact of our philanthropic efforts," he said.

The Social Network

Zuckerberg is a 26-year-old billionaire who now oversees an empire with profits of more than $800 million a year.

His success story was recently made into a film called The Social Network, a film about Facebook.

The Social Network was at the top of the American box-office charts when it opened this year. Which is a remarkable achievement for a film that is concerned with the seemingly uncinematic real-life story of how a nerdy college student came up with an idea for a website.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in his college dorm room six years ago. Five hundred million people have joined since, and eight hundred and seventy-nine of them are his friends. The site is a directory of the world’s people, and a place for private citizens to create public identities. You sign up and start posting information about yourself: photographs, employment history, why you are peeved right now with the gummy-bear selection at Rite Aid or bullish about prospects for peace in the Middle East. Some of the information can be seen only by your friends; some is available to friends of friends; some is available to anyone. Facebook’s privacy policies are confusing to many people, and the company has changed them frequently, almost always allowing more information to be exposed in more ways.

According to his Facebook profile, Zuckerberg has three sisters (Randi, Donna, and Arielle), all of whom he’s friends with. He’s friends with his parents, Karen and Edward Zuckerberg. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and attended Harvard University. He’s a fan of the comedian Andy Samberg and counts among his favorite musicians Green Day, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, and Shakira. He is twenty-six years old.

Zuckerberg cites “Minimalism,” “Revolutions,” and “Eliminating Desire” as interests. He likes “Ender’s Game,” a coming-of-age science-fiction saga by Orson Scott Card, which tells the story of Andrew (Ender) Wiggin, a gifted child who masters computer war games and later realizes that he’s involved in a real war. He lists no other books on his profile.

Zuckerberg’s Facebook friends have access to his e-mail address and his cell-phone number. They can browse his photograph albums, like one titled “The Great Goat Roast of 2009,” a record of an event held in his back yard. They know that, in early July, upon returning from the annual Allen & Company retreat for Hollywood moguls, Wall Street tycoons, and tech titans, he became Facebook friends with Barry Diller. Soon afterward, Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page, “Is there a site that streams the World Cup final online? (I don’t own a TV.)”

Since late August, it’s also been pretty easy to track Zuckerberg through a new Facebook feature called Places, which allows users to mark their location at any time. At 2:45 A.M., E.S.T., on August 29th, he was at the Ace Hotel, in New York’s garment district. He was back at Facebook’s headquarters, in Palo Alto, by 7:08 P.M. On August 31st at 10:38 P.M., he and his girlfriend were eating dinner at Taqueria La Bamba, in Mountain View.

Zuckerberg may seem like an over-sharer in the age of over-sharing. But that’s kind of the point. Zuckerberg’s business model depends on our shifting notions of privacy, revelation, and sheer self-display. The more that people are willing to put online, the more money his site can make from advertisers. Happily for him, and the prospects of his eventual fortune, his business interests align perfectly with his personal philosophy. In the bio section of his page, Zuckerberg writes simply, “I’m trying to make the world a more open place.”

The world, it seems, is responding. The site is now the biggest social network in countries ranging from Indonesia to Colombia. Today, at least one out of every fourteen people in the world has a Facebook account. Zuckerberg, meanwhile, is becoming the boy king of Silicon Valley. If and when Facebook decides to go public, Zuckerberg will become one of the richest men on the planet, and one of the youngest billionaires. In the October issue of Vanity Fair, Zuckerberg is named No. 1 in the magazine’s power ranking of the New Establishment, just ahead of Steve Jobs, the leadership of Google, and Rupert Murdoch. The magazine declared him “our new Caesar.”

Despite his goal of global openness, however, Zuckerberg remains a wary and private person. He doesn’t like to speak to the press, and he does so rarely. He also doesn’t seem to enjoy the public appearances that are increasingly requested of him. Backstage at an event at the Computer History Museum, in Silicon Valley, this summer, one of his interlocutors turned to Zuckerberg, minutes before they were to appear onstage, and said, “You don’t like doing these kinds of events very much, do you?” Zuckerberg replied with a terse “No,” then took a sip from his water bottle and looked off into the distance.

This makes the current moment a particularly awkward one. Zuckerberg, or at least Hollywood’s unauthorized version of him, will soon be starring in a film titled “The Social Network,” directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin. The movie, which opens the New York Film Festival and will be released on October 1st, will be the introduction that much of the world gets to Zuckerberg. Facebook profiles are always something of a performance: you choose the details you want to share and you choose whom you want to share with. Now Zuckerberg, who met with me for several in-person interviews this summer, is confronting something of the opposite: a public exposition of details that he didn’t choose. He does not plan to see the film.

Zuckerberg––or Zuck, as he is known to nearly everyone of his acquaintance––is pale and of medium build, with short, curly brown hair and blue eyes. He’s only around five feet eight, but he seems taller, because he stands with his chest out and his back straight, as if held up by a string. His standard attire is a gray T-shirt, bluejeans, and sneakers. His affect can be distant and disorienting, a strange mixture of shy and cocky. When he’s not interested in what someone is talking about, he’ll just look away and say, “Yeah, yeah.” Sometimes he pauses so long before he answers it’s as if he were ignoring the question altogether. The typical complaint about Zuckerberg is that he’s “a robot.” One of his closest friends told me, “He’s been overprogrammed.” Indeed, he sometimes talks like an Instant Message—brusque, flat as a dial tone—and he can come off as flip and condescending, as if he always knew something that you didn’t. But face to face he is often charming, and he’s becoming more comfortable onstage. At the Computer History Museum, he was uncommonly energetic, thoughtful, and introspective—relaxed, even. He addressed concerns about Facebook’s privacy settings by relaying a personal anecdote of the sort that his answers generally lack. (“If I could choose to share my mobile-phone number only with everyone on Facebook, I wouldn’t do it. But because I can do it with only my friends I do it.”) He was self-deprecating, too. Asked if he’s the same person in front of a crowd as he is with friends, Zuckerberg responded, “Yeah, same awkward person.

Cricket: Haider exit shameful for Pakistan -Imran Khan

KARACHI - Former captain Imran Khan has called for a clean-up of Pakistan cricket and said wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider's sudden exit to Britain to seek asylum was a "shameful' incident.

"It is really shameful the way he left the team and reached London," Imran told the Geo News channel on Wednesday.

"At the moment we don't know the facts that compelled him to do this but nevertheless it is another embarrassing moment for Pakistan and its people.

"Sadly this incident only gives credence to the feeling our players are linked with bookmakers or are controlled by them. The recent spot-fixing allegations have not been helpful at all for Pakistan cricket," added Imran.

Zulqarnain fled the team's hotel in Dubai on Monday, hours before the fifth and final one-dayer against South Africa, and flew to London.

The 24-year-old, who has played one test, four one-dayers and three Twenty20 games for Pakistan, also announced his international retirement because he said he feared for his safety after being ordered to cooperate with match-fixers.

Zulqarnain was a member of the squad whose tour of England this year degenerated into chaos when test captain Salman Butt and pacemen Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were suspended following spot-fixing allegations.

DELIBERATE NO-BALLS

A newspaper report said the trio had arranged for deliberate no-balls to be delivered in the fourth and final test against England.

Imran, now a frontline politician, said he was never threatened in his 21 years in international cricket. "Sadly this (Zulqarnain) incident only gives credence to the feeling our players are linked with bookmakers or are controlled by them," said the great all-rounder.

"We need to clean up the administration and the team and those players who, if they are involved in corruption, should not be spared," added Imran.

"We need to do this since it is better than the Pakistani people facing shame and embarrassment on a daily basis because of our cricket."

Imran dismissed the idea the International Cricket Council (ICC) governing body was against Pakistan.

"I don't think the ICC is against us," he said. "Those days are gone when only Australia, England and New Zealand could run world cricket.

"Whatever problems we face today it is because of our own shortcomings and mistakes."

Royal couples' honeymoon destinations

This is one of the talk in town. For sure the whole world as Prince William is preparing for the upcoming marriage.

Prince William and Kate are engaged. Here's a list of the places they may visit after their wedding.

His father honeymooned at Broadlands in Hampshire and Balmoral with the late Princess Diana and at Balmoral with Camilla. But where will Prince William choose for his honeymoon with Kate? Possibilities include the following:

KENYA

William has often said his heart is in Africa and Kenya is a likely spot.

The prince first went to the exclusive Lewa Downs nature reserve shortly after his mother's death in 1997 and he spent his gap year there too. Choosing to propose to Kate in Kenya cements his love for the country. Kenya also has poignancy for the Queen. She was holidaying at Treetops, a reserve close to Nairobi, in 1952 when she was told that her father had died and so she had succeeded to the throne.

SEYCHELLES

The couple is rumoured to have made a commitment to marry three years ago, while on a holiday in the Seychelles — and they may make a nostalgic return there.

They had an intimate break on the tiny island of Desroches in the Indian Ocean in August 2007.

After having a "blip" and breaking up with Kate five months earlier, William was apparently keen to show he was prepared to commit. With a population of only 50, a lone hotel, about 20 villas and a single airstrip, Desroches would be an ideal way to ensure privacy.

SCOTLAND

They are likely to spend at least part of the honeymoon in the country where their relationship first blossomed. There have been six royal honeymoons at Birkhall, Prince Charles's residence on the Balmoral estate, including the Queen and Prince Philip's in 1947. Kate's parents were photographed shooting there recently.

Royal author Ingrid Seward said: "It is not only a tradition among the Royal Family but in Kate and William's case Scotland is very much a big part of their love story. They love Balmoral. It is where their relationship grew."

MUSTIQUE

The private Caribbean island is a holiday favourite with Kate's family and she and William have spent several romantic breaks snorkelling, jet-skiing and sunning themselves on its golden sands.

TANZANIA

The couple could choose the Mkomazi game reserve, close to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Even on his honeymoon, William will want to show the seriousness with which he is taking his responsibilities by supporting his charities and promoting tourism in various needy areas.

AUSTRALIA OR NEW ZEALAND

William was mobbed on his tour Down Under earlier this year. Given the growing anti-monarchist movement in Australia — a second referendum on it becoming a republic is expected — it would be a diplomatic move to honeymoon there. New Zealand could be another option.

CRUISE

Charles and Diana spent the second part of their honeymoon — between Hampshire and Balmoral — on the royal yacht Britannia.

Their two-week cruise took in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, the Greek islands and Egypt. Britannia has been decommissioned but the Hebridean Princess, which the Queen chartered for the Royal Family's summer holiday this year, could provide a secure location for William and Kate.

Regal coincidence

Although the public knows her as Kate, it is Catherine that she was called when the engagement was announced. Royal aides said pointedly: "Her parents have always called her that. It is what she is called."

When William is crowned and she becomes Queen Catherine, she will be following in a long royal tradition. There have been five Queen Catherines in England's history:

Catherine of Valois

The wife of Henry V, she reigned for only two years before the death of her husband in 1422. Their son Henry VI took the throne when he was nine months old. She died in 1437 and was buried at Westminster Abbey but her coffin was allowed to remain open for all to see between Tudor and Victorian times, before it was finally re-sealed.

Catherine of Aragon

She married Henry VIII in 1509. Their marriage lasted 24 years but was blighted by stillbirths and the premature deaths of male heirs. Henry was so desperate to have the marriage annulled that, when the Pope refused to give his consent, the king spurned Rome and created the Church of England.

Catherine Howard

Henry VIII's fifth wife was beheaded after two years of marriage, in 1542, on the grounds of treason after being accused of adultery.

Catherine Parr

She married Henry in 1543 and reigned as queen until his death in 1547. But she barely saw her husband because he was in battle.

Catherine of Braganza

The Portuguese princess married Charles II in 1662 but was seen as a foreigner and was unpopular with the public.

The couple had no surviving children and she was given the cold shoulder by her husband.

There's good news for slimmers. Pick the right foods and indulge as much as you like.

Calorie-counting is off the menu for slimmers who want to lose weight for good.

According to the world's largest diet study, the best way to lose weight is to eat as much as you like — as long as you choose the correct foods, which include cold pasta, meat and nuts.

Overweight children also get slimmer when their parents stick to high-protein, low-carb cooking, researchers say.

A £12-million (Dh69-million) study concluded that the calorie-counting methods Britons have favoured for two decades are wrong and the best way to stay slim is to eat unlimited amounts of the right foods.

They tested five diets and found that the most effective was a high-protein, low-Glycaemic Index (GI) regime, which includes lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, pulses and nuts.

It is based on carbohydrates with a low GI, such as wholegrain bread, porridge and brown rice. These break down slowly during digestion, making dieters feel fuller for longer and stabilising blood sugar levels.

Cooled and cold foods take longer to digest so have a lower GI while cold pasta contains more resistant starch that delays digestion.

Solving the obesity riddle

Professor Arne Astrup, of the University of Copenhagen, said the findings could finally solve the obesity riddle. He said: "For many years we have been giving people in Europe the wrong advice about how to lose weight and avoid becoming obese. Calorie-counting hasn't worked and may have made the problem worse, because it didn't distinguish between different types of food."

The new diet composition is much more effective at helping people maintain a healthy weight. It has a slightly higher protein content and low-GI foods, and you can eat as much as you want. The six-month Danish study involved 772 European families, comprising 938 adults and 827 children, reports The New England Journal of Medicine.

The overweight and obese adults followed a traditional 800-calorie-a-day meal plan for eight weeks, losing an average of 11 kilos. They were allocated to one of five diets to see which was the most effective at keeping the weight off.

The nitty-gritty

The options were a low-protein, high-GI diet; a low-protein, low-GI diet; a high-protein, low-GI diet; a high-protein, high-GI diet; and a control group with no special instructions about GI foods. In the low-protein diets, protein comprised 13 per cent of energy consumed while in the high-protein diets, it represented 25 per cent.

High-GI foods are those scoring 70 or more on the GI — a scale of zero to 100 representing how quickly glucose is released into the bloodstream after eating.

Low-GI foods are those with a value of 55 or less.

The participants were given access to free foods suiting their diet plan from a university supermarket, with barcodes to ensure they were sticking to the appropriate meals.

Those on the high-protein, low-GI diet gained the least weight while those following the low-protein, high-GI diet put on the most — an average of two kilos.

Children also benefited, although they never specifically went on a diet. By the end of the study, the proportion who were overweight had fallen from almost half to 39 per cent.

According to researcher Dr Susan Jebb, head of nutrition and health research at the Medical Research Council Human Nutrition Research Centre: "It's essentially a low-fat diet, with a modest increase in protein that seems to make people feel fuller for longer. The low-GI foods give added value. If there is a single message to the public, it's about eating quality carbohydrates — not all carbs are the same."

Harry Potter & Deathly Hallows

The long goodbye for the most successful film series of the century thus far begins with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, the darkest and least characteristic of the batch. Gone are Hogwarts and the sense of security that went with it, gone is any of the joy of youth, gone is more than just a measure or two of John Williams' original music. With Harry, Ron and Hermione left largely to their own devices on often forbidding terrain, this grim beginning-of-the-end odyssey has a very different feel from any of its predecessors -- a development slightly more disconcerting than it is welcome. That this holiday release will be a huge international attraction is beyond question, even if the real fireworks mostly await the finale's second installment, which arrives July 15.

Perhaps the most pertinent question surrounding the way in which J.K. Rowling's exceptionally intricate epic is being concluded onscreen is whether dividing the final book into two films was justified artistically or only financially. After all, the longest volume in the series,Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, became the shortest film, and parts of the long midsection of Deathly Hallows-- when the kids sulk in the wild, not knowing what to do next -- easily could have been abridged.

More than even the most faithful of the earlier episodes, this film feels devoted above all to reproducing the novel onscreen as closely as possible, an impulse that drags it toward ponderousness at times and rather sorely tests the abilities of the young actors to hold the screen entirely on their own, without being propped up by the ever-fabulous array of character actors the series offers.

Arguing in favor of the extensive treatment is the fact that in Deathly Hallows, screenwriter Steve Kloves must pull together multiple story strands and dozens of characters that, as especially will be the case in Part 2, date back to the series' prepubescent days. To cram the essentials covered in Part 1 and to do justice to the climaxes that await would represent a very tall order for a single conventional-length film. So it seems reasonable enough to say why not do it all, shoot the works, show every scene millions of readers want to see, give every character his or her proper curtain call, be expansive rather than constrained? In this case, probably better a bit too much -- even a dull scene here and there -- than not enough.

Deathly Hallows opens boldly. "These are dark times, there's no denying," intones Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour (Bill Nighy, just now joining the series) in intense close-up, acknowledging the fact that archvillian Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) and his Death Eaters, having dispatched Dumbledore at the end of the previous installment, are on the verge of a complete takeover. For his part, Voldemort has gathered his minions to stress that it falls to him and no one else to kill Harry Potter, who must be hunted down at once.

Knowing his peril, Harry moves his immediate family (providing brief encores for Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw and Harry Melling) out of Privet Drive. But, sensing danger, Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson, fun to have back) insists upon replicating Harry sevenfold so that the Death Eaters won't know which is the real one when they come after him -- which they promptly do in a spectacular nocturnal airborne chase that ends up at the Weasleys' isolated home for a furtive wedding.

As anyone who has followed the yarn in print or onscreen will know, Harry's only hope of stopping Voldemort lies in his finding and destroying the Horcruxes that represent portions of the Dark Lord's pestilential soul. Inscrutable clues have been left behind by Dumbledore, but an encounter with former house elves Kreacher and Dobby -- themselves not seen in some time -- reveals that one Horcrux is in the possession of the students' former tormenter, the pint-sized lady in pink, Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton).

The film's most engaging sustained interlude involves the kids' risky visit to the Ministry of Magic, where Umbridge works as a judge now that the goon squad has taken over. Transforming themselves physically into the bodies of minor wizards, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) sneak about in a bureaucracy strewn with posters branding Harry "Undesirable #1" and so rife with threat and fear that Dr. Goebbels himself would have approved.

Online Advertising: Some tips from the Pros

Most small businesses get stuck with their online lead generation in three areas:

SEO – They understand the concept of search engine optimization, and do some work there, but they usually give up before great results are achieved.
PPC – People get a Google AdWords account, invest some money, watch it disappear, and stop.
Social Media – Here, people just waste time because they don’t know how to do it right.

Online lead generation is a big topic. In this post, I’m going to talk specifically about how to spend money wisely to ensure return on your investment.

Before we begin, I’m going to assume you have a well-defined target market, you understand clearly who your target is, you know where they hang out on the Internet, and you know their psychological triggers. Without this info, you’ll always lose in marketing.

To get started, you need to think outside the box. Yes, your potential customers may search for your product or service–so being listed with a PPC ad can do you some good. But that’s not the only way to reach them. Plus, only a small percentage of your entire target market is searching for what you sell at any given time.

The key is to go where the customers are. Figure out where they hang out on the Internet. Learn what they read. Find out what social networks they visit. Discover industry-specific forums or blogs. You get the picture. Once you know where they are, advertise there.

Sponsoring newsletters or dedicated solo e-mails is an extremely effective method of advertising for many businesses. If you discover that much of your target is subscribing to a certain newsletter, find out if you can sponsor that newsletter or send a dedicated advertisement. A dedicated, or “solo,” e-mail is an e-mail advertisement that a publisher will send to their newsletter list that contains only one piece of content: your ad. These can be golden.

Once you find an area where it makes sense to advertise, contact the publisher or vendor and set up a test. They’ll always want to sell you on a long-term contract. Don’t bite. Your job is to make this process scientific. Take the guesswork out. The only way to do that is to test. I like to limit tests to $2,000. You may want to limit them to less than that.

When you run your test, be sure to split-test. If you’re running a dedicated e-mail, for example, you’ll want to test a couple different subject lines against each other. On your next test, choose the subject line that performed best and then test something in the body of the e-mail. Next test the landing page. Eventually, you get to the point where you’re confident in the number of leads or sales your ad is going to produce every time you run it. Only at that point should you sign a long-term contract.

That’s it. It requires a bit of patience and scientific thinking, but it will produce results.

Lastly, let me just give you a few pointers:

Always have your landing page mirror the content of your ad. The further the landing page strays from what the ad said, the higher the bounce rate you’ll have on the landing page. I prefer to have my dedicated e-mails and landing pages look almost identical.
Be sure the important content and your opt-in form (or “buy now” buttons) are above the fold on your landing page.
Use subject lines and headlines that trigger a psychological response from your target. Talk about the benefits of what you sell first.
Keep distractions to a minimum. Preferably, you should only have one call to action in your ads and on your landing pages. If you give users other options, they might take them and then you might lose the sale. Help narrow their focus.
Use lead capture forms to capture lead info on your landing pages if your product is not an impulse-buy product. Offer something of value (a free report, e-book, consultation, etc.) in exchange for contact information. The minimum piece of information should be an e-mail address. Keep in mind, the fewer the number of fields in your form, the higher your opt-in rate. The more fields you have, the lower the opt-in rate. Use the fields to filter your lead flow.

Online advertising is an important marketing strategy for many businesses. This is just a start (and the most important part) of getting it done right. Feel free to ask questions about online advertising in the comments and I’ll answer them in subsequent blog posts.

With its new tagging ability, Facebook has made its site a whole lot more appealing for small business owners. Small business owners have the ability to seek out the people talking about them and users can get their voices heard, knowing businesses can check to see who has tagged them. But before either party can take advantage of Facebook’s new feature, you first have to get your customers to opt into the relationship. You have to give them a reason to friend your Facebook Fan page, and that’s not always easy.

I’ve written in the past about how to create a Facebook Fan page – how to set it up, what to put on it, how to make it look and feel like your brand. But how do you get people to actually want to join the page? How do you combat brand fatigue and take them from a passive observer to a full-blown brand evangelist?

You have to create an incentive.

Make People Feel Part Of Something

Think back to high school. You joined cliques for survival and to help you feel liked, respected, wanted, etc. You joined because you were made to feel like you were missing out if you weren’t part of the group. Social networking works the same way.

It’s very easy to be passive on Facebook. If you want someone to take that step and openly associate themselves with your brand, you need to make them feel like they’re missing out by NOT being part of your community. That they’ll be losing out on a common experience or missing the joke if they stay on the outside. You create that by making your community sound and feel 100x times larger than it actually is (unless you’re purposely trying to seem small and elite). You fake it until you make it. You make tagging part of your fans daily interaction with you. You make a game out of it so that you’re always showing up on their wall (with a link to your Fan page) and they’re always showing up on your page. Doing this helps spread your brand, it keeps you in people’s top of mind, and it makes them curious as to why they’re seeing you all over the place. I mean, how else do you get people to become fans oftarantulas?

Appeal To Core Members

Every group has a core bunch. The handful of folks who are responsible for change, for leading things, for getting everyone excited and spreading the company message. Reach out to these folks and get them involved in talking about your Fan page.

Create your promotional army by hand selecting the major players, sending the messages thanking them for their support, and then telling them that you need their help. Make them feel important and like they’re on the cutting edge of whatever you’re doing. Get them to always be talking about you and tagging you places. These types of action increase your trust, build your credibility and give you social proof. These types of connectors are usually the ones with very large social networks on sites like Twitter or Facebook. Ask them to use Facebook’s Suggest feature to “suggest” that their friends fan your page. When the request comes from them, it’s harder for others to decline and it just reinforces that “inside joke”.

Offer Exclusive Content

Facebook is much more intimate than the other social media sites. Users are less likely to invite strangers into their networks and are wary of brands. If you want their attention, you have to give them something of value for their efforts. Something exclusive that they can’t get from your Web site, Twitter account or anywhere else on the Web.

The most popular way of doing these seems to be through Facebook-specific coupons or special offers. Friday’s is offering free hamburgers, Victoria Secrets gave away free undies, Sears gave away coupons and gift cards, etc. Other brands give away exclusive content via video, photos, applications, advanced notice of events, or even just real interaction with other members. Figure out what your customers crave and then give it to them.

Make Your Fan Page Their Forum

No one wants to join a group where they have no voice. They want to interact with the brands they love and feel like they’re being listened to. Once of the best ways to get people to fan your page is to use it as a forum where you ask and listen to your customers’ advice. Let your members lead by turning your Fan page into a place where users can express themselves, to talk about what they don’t like, and things like they’d like to see you do in the future. If you have an upcoming campaign or product you’re working on create a Facebook focus group that encourages people to offer their input. If word gets out that your Facebook Fan page is where you go to crowdsource your ideas, people are going to want to be a part of that. Make your Fan page the place where your customers can go to get heard.

Facebook Fan pages have always been a valuable way to build a community and learn about your audience. However, now they’re also a great way to get your users to spread the word about your brand to their friends with the use of tags. Give them a reason to join your Fan page. Make it exciting and worth their time. And then encourage them to talk about you, to tag you and increase the eyeballs interacting with you online.

B2B businesses will want to write posts targeted towards businesses who are in need of their products and services, whereas B2C businesses will want to write posts geared toward their targeted customer demographic.

When corporate bloggers are coming up with post ideas, it is essential to put themselves in their targeted reader’s shoes and ask themselves:

What would I want to learn about this business and industry?
What hook would make me want to subscribe?
What topic would make me want to comment?
What kind of post wold make me want to inquire about products or services from this company?

Asking yourself these questions will help you determine just the kind of writing that you need to do to get a good response from your future blog community.

What Do My Competitors Do?

Business bloggers should do a bit of competitor research (just like you would do forlink building) for similar businesses that also have a corporate blog, and look at how well it goes over with their audience.

Do they get a lot of comments?
Do the posts do well in search?
Do the posts get a lot of social shares? A quick way to check is by installing theTopsy bookmarklet or Delicious Bookmark history bookmarklet (all the way at the bottom of the page) to your browser and seeing how many tweets and bookmarks the posts’ acquire.
What elements of the posts and blog do I like? What elements do I dislike?

This kind of “competitor research” will help you more easily determine what results you want to get from your blog as well as what will help you get your results.

Blogging Best Practices

Whether you are blogging for personal or business purposes, there are some basic best blogging practices that you should always keep in mind.

Make each post easy to share and more socialble by using social sharing buttons and comment plugins to encourage more interaction.
Write like you are talking to your audience – business blogging should be professional, but is also less formal than press releases and article marketing.
Don’t think of your blog (or social networking) as just an advertising platform. Blog readers like information, how-to’s, and, once you have built their trust, occasional recommedations. If they feel like they’re being pushed to buy something in every post, they will likely not come around again.
Link out to other sites that are informational as well. Remember your goal is to create a valuable resources for your readers. Seeing you share quality information will make them trust you even more.

Probably one of the biggest hold-ups in a business creating a blog is what to write about, especially if the business is in a very tight niche.

If you have answered the above “Who is Your Audience?” questions, then you will have a general idea of what topics will interest your potential readers. Other ways to generate ideas include:

Using Twitter and HootSuite (or other Twitter management tools) for monitoringinfluential twitterers in your industry and what is being discussed by the general public about it.
Does your business have a support department or help desk? What questions are commonly asked by your clients or potential customers? These might be good topics to answer on your blog.
Cover your views on current events and other hot topics in your industry by following major blogs on specific niches using major news networks and sites like Alltop, Technorati, or PostRank.

You might think that some subjects have been covered over and over again and can be found pretty much all over the internet, but what you want to realize is that, when someone is on your site, you want them to be able to find as much useful information possible about your industry on your site without having to go elsewhere (and possibly end up on a competitor’s blog instead).

Eid Mubarak! On Occasion of Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice)

After long days of sacrifice, today Muslims and even non-Muslims are celebrating Eid al-Fitr around the world.

This year, Ramadan started on August 11th 2010, and is expected to end either on September 9th or September 10th (29 or 30 days from the day it started depending on the sighting of the moon via several methods) and there are mounting fears that Muslims all around America may suffer a backlash on Eid al-Fitr. It just so happens that this joyous Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan coincides with the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001.

For those who may not know, the Islamic calendar uses the lunar system and that is why it rolls back 11 days each Gregorian year. The average length of a 12-month lunar year is 354.37 days, which is 10.8751 days short of the average length of the solar year (365.2422 days). Most lunar calendars (ie. Hebrew, Chinese, etc.) add a 13th “leap” month every 24 to 36 months. They do so to maintain the synchronization between lunar years and the four seasons. This is not the case with the Islamic Hijri calendar.

Eid al-Fitr, expected to be on either Sept. 9th or 10th 2010, celebrates the completion of the month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast and increase their spiritual devotions. On this day, Muslims all over the world thank Allah for his blessings upon them and for the gift of fasting.
