Currently servicemen and women in combat can mail any letter or package free of charge to any address in the United States through the Military Post and the United States Postal Service. This has been a long standing relationship between the Department of Defense and our postal service. The Department of Defense reimburses these costs to the postal service. On the other hand, there has never been a provision for family members or charities to send care packages or other items to servicemen or women free of charge to places of combat overseas. These costs have always been paid by the person shipping the care package or other items. There has been a change in that thinking by Congress.

Recent legislation has been introduced that would allow family members to ship, free of charge, care packages or mail to the military servicemen overseas. This will also be available to certain charities wanting to ship items overseas to our troops. This would be done through a voucher system where a soldier would be given an allotment of free shipping of a letter or up to 15 pound package per month. The two bills introduced, but not yet signed as law, are H.R. 2874 and H.R. 923. These bills are currently in committee and as yet have not been passed. If you would like to see this type of program made into law to allow shipping of packages to your loved ones overseas, please contact your congressional representatives and let them know of the importance of these bills and ask that they be passed. Let’s start shipping those care packages our troops so desperately need.

The Italian Grand Prix marked the last race of the European leg of the season, and now McLaren, along with the other 10 teams, face the logistical challenge of getting to Shanghai for the first of the final three flyaway races. To enable McLaren to compete in China, 33 tonnes of equipment has been transported by the team to Asia, as outlined below:

What:

• Five tonnes of equipment is sent by sea freight. This includes items that can be produced or purchased easily such as screens, wiring, trolleys, generators, and tables. This is in addition to all fuels and hazardous consumables which are sent by sea freight, packaged in a different container to the other items.

• The McLaren equipment fills a 40-foot sea container.

• 27 tonnes of freight and three complete cars are sent by air. This includes items such as spare components, pit equipment, tool cabinets, fuel trolleys, timing stands and radio systems.

• Mercedes will send seven engines to China. Three are sent as part of the complete cars and four spare engines are sent out on a different airfreight, which leaves on the morning of Tuesday, September 26, arriving in China on Wednesday, September 27.

• Mercedes use a 3500-kilogram shipping container to transport all spares, tools and equipment for flyaway races. The weight of the spare engines is additional to this.

When:

• The sea freight for the Chinese Grand Prix left the UK the week beginning August 7, from Tilbury in Essex, arriving in China the week beginning September 11.

• The air freight is managed by FOM (Formula One Management), and it departs London Stansted on Thursday, September 21, arriving in Shanghai on Friday, September 22.

• All freight is delivered to the Shanghai International Circuit by midday on Sunday, September 24.

• The air freight does not return to the McLaren Technology Centre in the UK until Tuesday, October 24, as it travels directly on to Japan and Brazil.

• Certain parts, such as gearboxes, uprights, steering racks, dampers and front and rear wings do return to the team’s Woking base following the Japanese Grand Prix on October 8 in order for them to be serviced.

How:

• For the sea freight there are three different sets that are sent separately to each race.

• There is one collection of air freight that is flown to all three flyaway races.

• The air freight is packed into six igloos, metal packing containers that measure 3 metres x 3 metres x 2 metres, in addition to two pallets of stacked boxes that are the same size as the igloos and a spare chassis box.

• Three complete MP4-21s and a spare chassis are transported by air to the race.

• To transport the MP4-21s the front and rear wings, steering wheels, wing mirrors and the side deflector panels are removed. A protective wooden floor and sides are put in place around the cars with a bumper on the back to protect the gearbox.

• There is a travel nosebox to protect the steering rack and front of the chassis.

• Bespoke covers are then put on the cars before being strapped onto double-decker pallets and loaded onto the FOM charter plane.

• McLaren will send around 95 people to the Chinese Grand Prix. This includes drivers, team management, engineers, race team, marketing and catering.

As reported by the World Wide Shipper, on September 22, 2006, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed proposed legislation that would increase fees for shipping containers in California. According to the article SB 927 sponsored by Alan Lowenthal-D Long Beach, would have increased fees for shipping containers coming through to two largest ports in California by $60.00 per 40 foot container. Apparently, those two ports alone handled 3.6 million of these 40′ or equivalent containers last year. It sounds like a quick way to make a quick 200 million in fees passing along the shipping fees to consumers no doubt.

Since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center using airplanes as weapons, the shipping industry has been concerned about the use of trucks as that kind of weapon, and especially trucks that transport hazardous material, like toxic inhalants and flammable material. According to Mark Clayton of the Christian Science Monitor:

“Every day, some 800,000 hazmat loads hit the road, carrying everything from chlorine and gasoline to liquefied natural gas and radioactive material each year, according to a recent study by the Transportation Security Administration. Nearly 2 in 5 of those shipments are classified as “extreme risk.”

The sum total of 320,000 “extreme risk” loads a day are on our public highways. That is an astonishing figure. What is being done about the potential risk of terrorists using these types of vehicles as weapons?

In November of 2001, the Department of Transportation formed the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The administration of the TSA now falls under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In 2004, the DHS began requiring drivers of hazardous material to be finger printed and background checks performed as well as checking their immigration status. Not an easy undertaking given the fact that there were nearly 3,000,000 HAZMAT licensed drivers.

HAZMAT placards on trucks are now categorized to help identify the type of materials being transported. This is a complicated system that is broken down into groups and subgroups, making risk managers a special position within the shipping and freight industry. Having a risk manager that understands the requirements and regulations is crucial to all companies that are involved is shipping or transporting hazardous materials.

Drivers have also been asked to report any suspicious activity that might be looked upon as a terrorist threat. This is a volunteer only program at this time, but a necessity nonetheless.

Since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center using airplanes as weapons, the shipping industry has been concerned about the use of trucks as that kind of weapon, and especially trucks that transport hazardous material, like toxic inhalants and flammable material. According to Mark Clayton of the Christian Science Monitor:
“Every day, some 800,000 hazmat loads hit the road, carrying everything from chlorine and gasoline to liquefied natural gas and radioactive material each year, according to a recent study by the Transportation Security Administration. Nearly 2 in 5 of those shipments are classified as “extreme risk.”
The sum total of 320,000 “extreme risk” loads a day are on our public highways. That is an astonishing figure. What is being done about the potential risk of terrorists using these types of vehicles as weapons?
In November of 2001, the Department of Transportation formed the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The administration of the TSA now falls under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In 2004, the DHS began requiring drivers of hazardous material to be finger printed and background checks performed as well as checking their immigration status. Not an easy undertaking given the fact that there were nearly 3,000,000 HAZMAT licensed drivers.
HAZMAT placards on trucks are now categorized to help identify the type of materials being transported. This is a complicated system that is broken down into groups and subgroups, making risk managers a special position within the shipping and freight industry. Having a risk manager that understands the requirements and regulations is crucial to all companies that are involved is shipping or transporting hazardous materials.
Drivers have also been asked to report any suspicious activity that might be looked upon as a terrorist threat. This is a volunteer only program at this time, but a necessity nonetheless.

As reported by the World Wide Shipper, on September 22, 2006, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed proposed legislation that would increase fees for shipping containers in California. According to the article SB 927 sponsored by Alan Lowenthal-D Long Beach, would have increased fees for shipping containers coming through to two largest ports in California by $60.00 per 40 foot container. Apparently, those two ports alone handled 3.6 million of these 40′ or equivalent containers last year. It sounds like a quick way to make a quick 200 million in fees passing along the shipping fees to consumers no doubt.

Getting an F1 Racing Team Across the Ocean

The Italian Grand Prix marked the last race of the European leg of the season, and now McLaren, along with the other 10 teams, face the logistical challenge of getting to Shanghai for the first of the final three flyaway races. To enable McLaren to compete in China, 33 tonnes of equipment has been transported by the team to Asia, as outlined below:
What:
• Five tonnes of equipment is sent by sea freight. This includes items that can be produced or purchased easily such as screens, wiring, trolleys, generators, and tables. This is in addition to all fuels and hazardous consumables which are sent by sea freight, packaged in a different container to the other items.
• The McLaren equipment fills a 40-foot sea container.
• 27 tonnes of freight and three complete cars are sent by air. This includes items such as spare components, pit equipment, tool cabinets, fuel trolleys, timing stands and radio systems.
• Mercedes will send seven engines to China. Three are sent as part of the complete cars and four spare engines are sent out on a different airfreight, which leaves on the morning of Tuesday, September 26, arriving in China on Wednesday, September 27.
• Mercedes use a 3500-kilogram shipping container to transport all spares, tools and equipment for flyaway races. The weight of the spare engines is additional to this.
When:
• The sea freight for the Chinese Grand Prix left the UK the week beginning August 7, from Tilbury in Essex, arriving in China the week beginning September 11.
• The air freight is managed by FOM (Formula One Management), and it departs London Stansted on Thursday, September 21, arriving in Shanghai on Friday, September 22.
• All freight is delivered to the Shanghai International Circuit by midday on Sunday, September 24.
• The air freight does not return to the McLaren Technology Centre in the UK until Tuesday, October 24, as it travels directly on to Japan and Brazil.
• Certain parts, such as gearboxes, uprights, steering racks, dampers and front and rear wings do return to the team’s Woking base following the Japanese Grand Prix on October 8 in order for them to be serviced.
How:
• For the sea freight there are three different sets that are sent separately to each race.
• There is one collection of air freight that is flown to all three flyaway races.
• The air freight is packed into six igloos, metal packing containers that measure 3 metres x 3 metres x 2 metres, in addition to two pallets of stacked boxes that are the same size as the igloos and a spare chassis box.
• Three complete MP4-21s and a spare chassis are transported by air to the race.
• To transport the MP4-21s the front and rear wings, steering wheels, wing mirrors and the side deflector panels are removed. A protective wooden floor and sides are put in place around the cars with a bumper on the back to protect the gearbox.
• There is a travel nosebox to protect the steering rack and front of the chassis.
• Bespoke covers are then put on the cars before being strapped onto double-decker pallets and loaded onto the FOM charter plane.
• McLaren will send around 95 people to the Chinese Grand Prix. This includes drivers, team management, engineers, race team, marketing and catering.

Shipping To Our Servicemen Overseas

Currently servicemen and women in combat can mail any letter or package free of charge to any address in the United States through the Military Post and the United States Postal Service. This has been a long standing relationship between the Department of Defense and our postal service. The Department of Defense reimburses these costs to the postal service. On the other hand, there has never been a provision for family members or charities to send care packages or other items to servicemen or women free of charge to places of combat overseas. These costs have always been paid by the person shipping the care package or other items. There has been a change in that thinking by Congress.
Recent legislation has been introduced that would allow family members to ship, free of charge, care packages or mail to the military servicemen overseas. This will also be available to certain charities wanting to ship items overseas to our troops. This would be done through a voucher system where a soldier would be given an allotment of free shipping of a letter or up to 15 pound package per month. The two bills introduced, but not yet signed as law, are H.R. 2874 and H.R. 923. These bills are currently in committee and as yet have not been passed. If you would like to see this type of program made into law to allow shipping of packages to your loved ones overseas, please contact your congressional representatives and let them know of the importance of these bills and ask that they be passed. Let’s start shipping those care packages our troops so desperately need.

The Customer Respect Group, an international research and consulting firm that investigates how corporations treat their online customers, has ranked Yellow Transportation No. l in the Transportation, Distribution and Logistics category with a Customer Respect IndexTM (CRI) score of 7.8.
