History Lesson (USA)

Thought I would share, a friend of mine e-mailed me this....

For those that don't know about history . Here is a condensed version:

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer. These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals, and
2. Conservatives..

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can was invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men. Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives provided.

Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth... the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food is standard liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer, mostly Coors. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military, airline pilots and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history:

It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers and to more liberals just to tick them off.
An International Perspective on Screenwriting and Filmmaking

In recent years, there has been a very drastic shift in the film industry. No longer are films solely produced in Hollywood - a global voice has risen from every continent - forever changing the landscape of the film industry. In this fun and active class, we'll explore this shift from the perspective of craft. Through active viewings and discussions of prominent foreign films, students will learn the techniques of filmmaking in the foreign film market. Films discussed will include a variety of works including the rise of New German cinema, India's Bollywood, the French New Wave, and the birth of modern film editing in Soviet Russia. Students will be asked to write creatively and critically on the subject. We'll also touch on marketing scripts and films to foreign production companies. Taught by Phil Duncan, MFA student and editor of The Wanderlust Review, a literary journal dedicated to the experience of travel.

Sign/Print shop looking for sales help (Seattle)

I'm a small sign/design studio located in Georgetown/Seattle. I make signs for a number of parking garages and surface parking lots. I also make custom stickers/labels for a lot of random companies ranging from French Kiss Records to Starbucks. Lately I'm so busy doing production that it's hard for me to make sales calls etc.
I'm looking for the right person who's willing to work on a commission basis. There's a lot of sign work in our growing city, and with the right skills someone can make a good amount of money. We can discuss a percentage of sales based on your interest. Ultimately, I'm really interested finding business partner. Someone who can end up being part of the company's ownership as well as overseeing how it's run. I've been in business for 5 years and own all the equipment. I don't carry a lot of overhead costs, so there's simply room for profit.
If you're responsible, interested in doing some sales and learning the business, let me know. The sooner the better.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Work Experience:

Volunteer for Health Care Awareness (05/09-08/09)
SEIU “Change that Works”
Bismarck, ND
A grassroots organization working to inform and engage local activists and shape public discussion. I typically canvassed at local events as well as door to door canvassing to encourage the community to express their personal experiences with the current health care system to North Dakota’s Congressional delegation. The position took determination and enthusiasm to continue after occasional rejection, as well as the presence of mind to have thoughtful discussions rather than arguments on such a sensitive subject. I also performed marketing duties and was a key figure in organizing the music for two rallies to promote the cause.

Assistant Education Abroad Advisor (09/07-08/08)
UND Office of International Programs-University of North Dakota-Grand Forks, ND
Assistant Education Abroad Advisor-Advised prospective students on all aspects of studying abroad as well as the visa process for various countries. The visa process is a highly technical process with complex and often conflicting information. I arranged the start-up logistics for a new faculty directed program for theater in Scandinavia. Helped to design program information guides that I compiled information and produced for all of UND’s affiliated programs. Independently arranged classroom information meetings with numerous departments, organized study abroad alumni to conduct the meetings and personally conducted many meetings. Helped develop creative tactics to best prepare students for the term ahead of them, e.g. cooking competition for pre-departure orientation. All work was under minimal supervision, with much of the work done under a deadline. Worked a great deal with MS Excel, MS Word and MS PowerPoint and DataPro.

Volunteer for Study Abroad (01/07-05/07)
Helped develop and conducted country specific information sessions where I lent my expertise from studying in Greece. Also enlisted other alumni and faculty to answer specific questions about the country and program. Conducted mandatory general information sessions for prospective study abroad students. Assisted with data entry and performed any other task asked of me. I started this volunteer position due to passion for studying abroad and it later evolved into a paid administrative position.

UND Student Leaders International-Member (01/07-07/09)
Office of International Programs funded study abroad alumni organization. Used as a tool for the office for support in pre-departure orientation and marketing efforts. I functioned as a liaison between the organization and the Office of International programs for new projects and any other new developments.

Awards:
Fall '08-Arneberg-Larsen Scholarship Recipient
-Awarded to students to promote better international relations through better knowledge and understanding of the languages, customs, literature, art and traditions of other countries
-Received for the semester abroad in Montpellier, France.

Spring '08-Dean’s List, University of North Dakota

Fall '07-Nomination for Who’s Who Among Student Volunteers
-Nominated by staff at Office of International Programs for volunteer work conducted

***High-end college babysitter available*** (Viewridge/sandpoint/windermere/greenlake)

Hi I'm Elizabeth. I'm a 20yr old 3rd yr college student who is looking for new families to babysit for.I currently attend Shoreline CC and have a 3.0 GPA and plan to transfer to the UW school of Business. I took 3yrs of French in high school and now 4 quarters of Spanish at SCC. I currently work at a private school in the Seattle area for the after school care program (Monday-Thursday). I used to volunteer as a life guard in high school, so I know CPR (my certs are expired but willing to renew if you'd like).

I am well connected in the Wedgewood, Sandpoint, Viewridge, Windermere, and Greenlake neighborhoods. I take care of children all ages and try to engage children in different activities while keeping to their regular schedule. I love to teach children new things from arts and crafts to my knowledge of different languages. I'm a big believer in manners and etiquette so in my care there will be "please and thank you's" and meals with napkins.

I have a cat and a dog of my own, so I love pets. I also housesit and pet sit.

I nannied full time 2 summers ago and loved it (5yr old boy & 10yr old girl) . I also "date night" babysit during the weekend or weekdays for many families. I have been babysitting since the 8th grade. I'm very responsible and have had responsibility from a very young age, especially when my younger brother was born. I would like to find a family/or families that need a responsible, caring, outgoing babysitter or nanny. I like to have a fun relationship with kids while still having an authority persona.

Winter break is approaching and I can be available for "holiday shopping" time along with date night sitting and house sitting and pet sitting for vacations. I charge $12hr per child. (Rates flexible for families with 3+ children).

I can provide references on request after chatting with you for a bit. I would like to know about your household lifestyle and of course... your child/children. Why you need child care, etc. I do like to meet with families at their home and discuss how your household works and meet the children.

I say "high- end" nanny because I commit when you need me and I RESPECT your home and children and of course YOU! I give all my energy when I'm "on the clock" and hope that in turn you will respect me and my time.

I'm flexible but study hard so I do like to make dates in advance.

Please email me if you are interested. I look forward to chatting with you.

Free Espresso Event for your Business / workplace! (Eastside +)

Who loves a quality espresso drink? Obviously you do, or you wouldn't have clicked this ad!

Yes, I can really do a FREE espresso event at your business. I know it sounds too good to be true.... but keep reading and you'll see why this makes sense for both of us.

I represent a wonderful fully automatic machine that grinds the coffee beans for each drink. It makes 12 different beverages: coffee, espresso, mocha, latte, french vanilla latte, cappuccino, chai tea, hot chocolate...... even a chai mocha which you simply have to try. You and your guests will be impressed by the beauty of the machine, the way it operates, the variety of drinks, and the superb quality of the beverages it serves.

I LOVE showing off the machine. Managers LOVE the fact that this top-notch machine keeps employee IN for coffee instead of going OUT for quality drinks. My goal is to let company owners and managers know that I can get this machine into their business at NO COST to the company. That's where you come in!

Invite me to come on over to your company- morning, breaktime, early afternoon..... it doesn't matter. I'll run this machine either in your building or out of my van in the parking lot. I'll GIVE FREE espressos and coffee, but I'll charge $1 for the other drinks. Some of you will take the freebies, and some will gladly pay $1 for a french vanilla mocha, cappuccino, or other specialty coffee.

I'll more-or-less break even on my costs, and I'll hand out a few little flyers on the machine for you coffee drinkers to give to the business owner / manager / HR director. Once you and your co-workers tell management what you think of this machine, maybe they'll contact me to see if we can keep a machine there for the long run (often at NO COST to the company). Of course there's no obligation. Again, I really just need to show off the machine!

I don't care whether you're the company owner, or low-person-on-the-totem-pole. If you're the owner or a manager, then I'll probably demo inside your office/building/breakroom. If you're an "I just work here" employee, then I'll probably demo in the parking lot during breaktime. Either way, this works for me. You can see that I'm real tough to get along with. :-)

Don't be shy.... give me a call or email. I generally like to plan these about a week in advance, and I usually have some flexibility.

I will have made over $150K in 2009, B2B, Aflac (Eastside)

My name is Dwayne French. I am a District Sales Coordinator for the Aflac Company—which basically means I am a ‘player/coach’—I am out selling Aflac, while training others to do the same. I have worked for Aflac for 4 years as a sales representative. Since January 2009, in the midst of a recession, I have made over to $120,000. In my first full calendar year at Aflac (2006) I made $30K. My second year (2007) I made $86K. In 2008 I made $140K. Despite the recession, I’m on track to make $160-$180K in 2009. Now is a GREAT time to be marketing Aflac to local businesses, because as companies are cutting back on pay and benefits in today’s economy, they are more open to hear about how Aflac can enhance their employee benefits at no direct cost to their company. And as individual employees feel insecure about the economy, they are attracted to the cash benefits that Aflac offers. I love working for Aflac as a sales rep for several reasons: 1) Selling Aflac is a business to business transaction. I am not contacting individuals, I am contacting employee benefits decision makers at local businesses, and work primarily only during business hours. 2) People have a positive view of Aflac as a well recognized Fortune 500 company—you’ve probably seen the enormously popular Aflac duck commercials. 3) Aflac is a great product that people and businesses alike need. It makes a positive difference in their lives. 4) The more accounts I open, and the more people I enroll with Aflac, the more I am able to build my base income. 5) I am able to take my wife on fun trips (we did a cruise in 2007, San Diego in 2008) paid for by Aflac. 6) Even though I did not make a lot of money my first year, I am making a nice 6 figure income now, and will continue to do so, Lord willing, for the rest of my career. 7) I am in control of my own schedule. I am able to go to all of my kids ball games. 8) I am able to build my career and make a nice living in the midst of a recession. 9) I do not have to worry about being laid off.

I was 42 when I changed careers and began working for Aflac. It was a difficult decision for me. I would be leaving a full-time job with a regular paycheck in exchange for a 100% commission job. I also had a large mortgage payment, 3 hungry children and a wife to provide for. The prospect of working for Aflac was frankly very scary, because there is no guaranteed income—at first. So I had to ‘figure out my cash flow’ for the first year or two while I was “filling the pipeline” with leads and appointments. At first, my wife and I both worked part-time at another job to provide some guaranteed income while I got going with Aflac. I also opened up a line of credit on my house and tapped into it a few times. Now, 4 years later, Aflac is the most secure job I have ever had. I have no fear that I am going to get fired or laid off. I have built up, and continue to further build, a residual base of income. I have opened almost 100 commercial accounts and service them regularly, which is where the majority of my income comes from at this point. I make a 6 figure income and will continue to for the rest of my career. All the while, I am helping people, and feel real good about how I am earning a living. I intend to work for Aflac my entire career. Also, I have no problem now feeding my 3 hungry children, making the house payment, and providing for my wife—in fact, Aflac just sent the two of us to Manhattan for several days and put us up in a nice luxury hotel, and even gave us a few hundred dollars cash to spend any way we like while there! And I just qualified to take my wife and 2 guests, on an all expense paid trip to Puarto Vallarta next January.

If you need to make a lot of money right away, Aflac is not for you (it is important that you think through how you will pay the bills at first when your Aflac income will be extremely limited—while keeping the big-picture in mind for where you would like to be 3 to 5 years from now in terms of your income and career success). Also, you need to be willing to cold call businesses, at first. You will not need to spend your whole Aflac career cold calling, but your first 1 to 3 years you will do a lot of cold calling. If you cannot handle the rejection aspect of cold calling, Aflac is not for you. If you have integrity, a good work ethic (sales is not easy, it’s hard work—but you are compensated very well for it), are good with people, are willing to cold call full time for at least a year, can wait 3 to 5 years before making a 6 figure income for the rest of your career—as your own boss—please contact me for an interview. Aflac has an excellent training program. I am personally one of the top producers with Aflac in Washington State and will likely be involved in the training process with you, if you are hired by Aflac. Please call, or email me your resume: dwayne_french@us.aflac.com, 206-954-2985.

RE: Have you always wanted to adopt a little boy? (OMG! your nuts!)

OH MY! I hope that no parents hoping to adopt deal with this crazy woman! First keep in mind, there are no legal documents that one can sign prior to the birth of a baby to make sure you will indeed be that babys parents. So, if this mom to be wants money prior to her babys birth, you may very likely not ever see her again. This is a common scam, many awful women take advantage of women unable to have there own child this way. Anyone asking for money in this situation is crazed! If you are low income in Washington and expecting you should not be paying for perscriptions. If you are not low income, it should not be an issue, you knew what you were getting into when you allowed yourself to become knocked up! Adoption agencies DO PROVIDE assistance for bills acquired while with child. Asking someone to give you money for your phone bill in exchange for your baby is sick. I hope anyone who encounters this mother reports her to social services! Washington Law states that NO FEES can be paid by an adoptive parent that do not fall under the following:

Washington State laws provide special protection and limits to the fees that can be charged. Fees can only include:

hospital and medical expenses;
attorney's fees and court costs involved in the transfer of custody of the child; and
home studies and agency fees.

YOUR POST:
Hello,

This is very hard for me and I do not even know where to begin. I am 22 years old pregnant with a boy I am 5 months and 1 week along the father turned out to be something completely different then what I thought he was we were engaged and living together the whole works engagement got called off we are no longer together and now he will not do anything for this baby after its born, nor has he done anything for it so far during this pregnancy, In fact we do not even speak to one another right now. Please do not judge me but I am in no position right now to take care of this child in many ways mostly financially and instead of getting an abortion like so many in my life have suggested I refused because I could never kill another human being. Abortion is murder in my eyes and even though I can't take care of this child and need to give it up at least I would be allowing my child to live by giving it to a family that can take care of it and provide. I am looking for a wonderful family I can give my child to that either can not have children of their own or just flat out wants to adopt. Please be a family that is financially well off, Believes in God, and is loving and caring. The only thing I could ask is for a little $$ for giving my child to your family people may look down upon this but there are so many woman that carry other people's child in them and get paid for it I know in this situation I would not be carrying (YOUR) child but the $$ given to me would help with some of the bills that I will need to pay off from going to the doctors that my insurance didn't cover such as prescriptions I've needed and some regular bills example, Electric, phone & rent. For a small amount of $ that will really help me, You get a beautiful little boy that can bring the love, and joy you've wanted in your life. I am very willing to cooperate if you make decisions such as you would not like me to be around at all, or to not have any contact I will be ok with that It would be hard for me as I am not a heartless person I do have a conscience and would think about the baby a lot however I would respect your wish if that is what you wanted. This is a real situation for a mother that feels their is no other options and is really stuck in a rut. Please only contact me if you are SERIOUS about adopting a little boy and meet my very reasonable (small requirements.) Thank you GOD BLESS

(Please do not emailing me letting me know about adoption agencies I appreciate the concern and help however I am well aware of the adoption agencies and there is no $ payout to me only to my medical bills in which I already have insurance. This would strictly be a agreement made privately through me and the family if they want to hire their own lawyer to cover the legal ends better then that's fine but this is not being done through an adoption agency.)

Tutoring of ESL, Spanish, other languages (Seattle)

Hello, want to make learning a language more exciting?

I have a Bachelor's in English and am skilled at explaining how languages work, and I have good accents in Spanish, French, and other languages (Turkish, Korean). I can provide references for language-exchanges and tutoring I have done.

Here's how it works:

In English, I will check your experience level and tutor you accordingly with books, CDs, and music.

In Spanish, French, or another language, I can tutor you with CDs, music, and culture lessons. Full disclosure: I don't have a degree in a foreign language, but I am quick to pick them up and can help you to stay on track while learning the language. I've always been told by teachers and natural speakers that I have a good accent in these languages.

We will have fun learning the languages! Lessons are $15/hour. Get in touch if you'd like to hear more.

Babysitting w/ or w/o language instruction (Seattle & Eastside)

Hello, I am available for babysitting and nannying, p/t or longer hours, and I have good references/experience. I'm available weekends, weekdays, and evenings.

I enjoy kids and like singing, reading, taking walks, and playing games with them.

And if you're interested, I can teach them daily language lessons. I have a good accent in Spanish and French, and have studied a bit of Mandarin, Korean, and Turkish. I'd play a lesson from a CD from the library, and we'd speak along with the words and write things down, and play games with pictures and music to illustrate culture. Options include Mandarin, Spanish, French, and others. I can also teach English if this is helpful. My B.A. is in English and I'm good at explaining how languages work.

If you'd rather skip the languages, though, that's no problem. In babysitting, we can play all kinds of fun games. Let me know if you'd like to talk further.
The Clash of the Legends Tour with Jill Sobule and Erin McKeown live at the fabulous Tractor Tavern on Thursday November 12th at 8PM. Tickets are $15 and available through www.tractortavern.com or at the door.

Jill Sobule belongs to a rare breed of artists. Her work is at once deeply personal and socially conscious, seriously funny and derisively tragic. Over five albums and a decade of recording, the Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer has tackled such topics as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, the French resistance movement, adolescence, and the Christian right. Did we mention love? Love found, love lost, love wished for and love taken away.

While her songs cover a huge amount of ground, they all have benefit greatly from Jill's subtle intelligence and skillful light-handedness. No sloganeering flag-and-fist waving here, but rather story songs about human beings, real and imagined, which allow us to step back from the issue, be it personal or social, and relate to it as we would a close friend.

To see Jill live and in concert is a rare treat. It is on stage that she is most comfortable, most powerful, and where the delicacy and range of her work can be best appreciated. She entertains, amuses, provokes, and more often then not, takes her audiences on an emotional roller coaster, from comedy to pathos in a few bars of music.

In the words of New York Times pop music critic Jon Pareles, "Jill Sobule can claim her place among the stellar New York singer-songwriters of the last decade. Topical, funny and more than a little poignant ... grown-up music for an adolescent age."

Jill is also a very gracious musician and is extremely good to her fans. Why not make a new friend and come out to see Jill and Erin on November 12th!
