But, for Christmas, we had to make something special. This pattern was completely dreamed up in my head and it was fun to see it 'come to life' over the holidays. It was a little complicated with all the colorwork and sizing- so things may have been "fudged" a bit, but it came together. For that reason, I wouldn't count on a pattern coming out of this- my notes are mere scribbles, and my charts are hand drawn with multiple dark lines being drawn through.

I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to post. When I take a break, it's always hard to come back. I feel I owe some sort of apology or really impressive post, but then I realize I just need to start up to get the ball rolling. The holidays were grand, complete with much time visiting family and friends.

Unfortunately, Joe and I started 2012 off on the wrong foot, with a dreadful case of (what we believe to be) food poisoning. I'm really not sure how we would have gotten through that situation without family nearby, but we have pulled through and finally seem to be on the other side of it.

I hope your holidays were wonderful and that you are now enjoying some selfish knitting- it is time for that, right?!

And the winner is:

This holiday season has reminded me how important it is to slow down and gift things that are made my hand (it's a commitment that I'm managing to fulfill). Annie's "pasture to pullover" is a philosophy that I would love to support. Thanks for the giveaway!

After 4-5 days of not having time to knit a stitch last week/this past weekend, I was starting to worry that I wouldn't have enough time to work on Elise's Christmas sweater. After just a few evening knitting sessions, the sweater prevailed!

Just a reminder- today is the last day to win free yarn from by Annie Claire, make sure you enter before midnight EST. And on that note, have you seen her winter collection yet? It's live and it is gorgeous- go check it out (and make sure you click on each photo to get a description of how each is made/dyed- so interesting!).

ps... this pictures shows just why we can never have all hardwood floors in our house. That's right, I just lay down a towel and pin my washed knits into the carpet- works like a charm!

When Annie of 'by Annie Claire' first wrote to me about becoming a sponsor, I was a little inspired. In her short email, she really conveyed the passion she has for her new adventure in life.

Her goal? To lessen the gap between 'pasture to pullover'. Annie makes it her mission to make available yarn from small flock farms around her community. She then dyes these yarns without the use of chemicals and only with the natural pigments from plants and flowers found around her home.

In working this way, you can imagine that various flowers and foliage from different seasons would produce distinctive color families. And with that, Annie is about to launch her first seasonal group of colors, focusing on the plants in season around this time of year.

On Thursday (December 22), by Annie Claire will be launching the Winter Collection 2011, a collection of four yarns of the season. Wondering about the colors?? So am I! But, I do have a sneak peek of one of them:

This lovely burnt orange is made from the toyon plant, which is at it's prime during winter months when it shoots out gorgeous bunches of berries.

Not only is this a sneak peek of the color, but these two skeins are up for grabs! Annie has sent these my way in order for me to send them on to one lucky blog reader. What do you have to do to win 500 yards of all-natural worsted-weight goodness? Just leave a comment on this post by Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 11:59 EST (say hi, offer Annie a bit of encouragement, let her know what your favorite thing in her shop is... anything!).

After seeing beautiful pictures and hearing remarkable experiences about this event for the past couple years, I could not believe it when I received an email back in July requesting my presence. I am seriously- take a look at the list of teachers. I'm not sure how I was included in this amazing group, but I am beyond honored and truly humbled.

If you are not familiar with Squam Art Workshops, hop on over to the website and look around- I'm sure you will feel inspired. Maybe inspired enough to join us this coming June?

ps... Need some help getting to Squam? Let your loved ones know that gift certificates are available- just in time for the holidays!

I fall a little more in love with every stitch knit. Can't wait to share the finished project (but with size 2 needles, fingering weight yarn, colorwork [not worked in the round]- and seaming, I've gotta get moving before the 25th rolls around)!

As mentioned before, I loved the idea of incorporating the motif from Elise's first Christmas outfit into her stocking. Since I never found an exact stocking I wanted to make, this was the perfect solution. After I originally posted about possible stocking options, I did stumble upon another great stocking. Enter the Falling Snow Stocking by Jennifer Hoel.

Turns out,

+

=

I used elements from the Falling Snow Stocking, along with inspiration from her 1st Christmas sweater dress to create a stocking that will (hopefully) be with her for a lifetime.

It's a bit more flashy than our stockings, but that's ok. I figure they don't have to match. And, when we have more to add, we can have a whole eclectic collection of handknit stockings.

Yarn: Cascade 220, Cream and Red (about .7 skeins of each)

Raveled: here

I have some big news that I am *SO* excited to share with you- stay tuned later this week.

But, a little inspiration goes a long way and before I knew, all I wanted to do was get the stocking off the needles to start the perfect sweater.

But, before I get ahead of myself, the stocking is finished. I'm pretty happy about how it looks- It's blocking now and I'll have pictures soon!

And finally, we have some winners to announce. And they winners are:

Baby Vest: Jen

Waldorf Baby Doll: Ludamilla

Pattern of Choice: Jill C.

Pattern of Choice: knit one, knit two

Only Jill C. included her email address- if you are one of the winners, use the "Contact" tab on the top of this page to send me and email to let me know who you are and how to contact you.

Congrats!

The first up is one of my favorite little baby cardigans ever. I have knit it a few times, in fact, I made a smaller version for Elise to come home from the hospital in.

A few weeks ago we spent a couple days in Chicago after a business meeting I attended. It turned out to be a lovely weekend and Elise decided to grace the Magnificent Mile with a few Magnificent knit sweaters.

The weather was just brisk enough for stocking tights and cardigans, but not yet cold enough for heavy coats. They were getting the city all set up for Christmas. Turns out Elise has a little Scrooge in her and decided to un-do some of the Christmas decor:

For more info on the sweater, find my original post here. Or, check it out on Ravelry.

Laura and Julia are identical twins who spend much of their time at their jobs as RNs. When they aren't working or playing with their boys, they are crafting for their Etsy shop where they feature Waldorf, sewing, crochet, and knitting patterns.

And with that, let me give you the chance to get to know the ladies of Adirondack Patterns:

We both began crafting at an early age. Growing up being Identical Twins, we always had each other to play with. Our mom was always teaching us how to cook, bake, craft. From watching our mom make our many identical dresses/clothes, to helping her make the yearly Christmas ornaments that we would gift for presents to family and friends.

Our Maternal Grandmother was a knitting goddess. She taught us how to knit when we were about 9 or 10 years old. Many days were spent watching her little arthritic hands click the needles showing us how to knit and purl. Unfortunately the skill was lost in our teenage years, and we gravitated to sewing instead.

Our Paternal Grandmother, as well as our mom, showed us how to sew a few basic items. We started making "scrunchies" (you remember scrunchies, RIGHT????) as one of our first projects, and gave them out to anyone who wanted one. A few years ago we picked up sewing again, and whipped up a whole bunch of baby items to sell at the local craft fairs. We came up with our own designs, and patterns, and made booties, bibs, bags, blankets, dresses, coloring wraps, burp clothes, you name it, we made it! Unfortunately we closed up shop after the first year due to the huge amount of restrictions on selling handmade items, especially for babies.

Laura loves play with her boys, bake, to rearrange her furniture, and honestly a large amount of time is spent in front of her laptop/T.V. Julia likes to play with her boy, cook, read, listen to music, and enjoy the outdoors.

What inspires your creativity?

Babies....there we said it. We recently had a new baby (Laura's baby boy) join the family, and he is our main inspiration.
Ok, without further ado, I give you Elise's collection:

And now, for what's included:

Hats: 12
Pullover sweaters: 2
Cardigans/Jackets: 10
Shrugs: 1
Dresses: 3
Blankets: 1
Legwarmers: 1 pair
Mittens: 1 pair (and then a few sample loners that she's been wearing since we can't find one mitten of her pair)
Diaper Covers: 1
Socks/Booties: 3 pairs
Felted Bag: 1
Teddy Bear: 1
Balls: 3

Just for the record, not all of these were knit by me. Here's the gifts:
Felted Bag- from Charlene
Bunny Hat, White Ear flap Hat, and Balls- from Melissa
Green Hat- from Tara
Playful Stripes Cardigan: from Jill
Dedication outfit (crocheted dress, blanket, bonnet, and booties): My Mother in Law
2 Hats- from the hospital when she was born

It's quite an extensive list. Let's just say it, this girl is spoiled. Sadly, her future siblings will probably never get as many hand knits as her (no counting hand-me-downs), poor kids (can you tell I'm not a first born?).

Now the real question boggling my mind is the following: how did this happen?!

ps- for those of you wondering, I still have not decided on a stocking. I am loving the idea of incorporating the motif from last year's dress, I guess we'll see what I come up with!

Knowing that Elise will (probably) be awake this year to open presents, I figure I need to jump on a stocking for her. The problem? I can't find the perfect pattern. The solution? You, of course.

So far, I do have a few stockings favorited on Ravelry, so here's a little roundup:

1: 2:

And this is the planned on color scheme:

Or this:

The dark blues are more different than they look. The first is hand dyed yarn, the second is a heather blue with a little more green in it.

So- what do you think ? I'm looking for opinions, but also suggestions. Like I said, I'm not really set on anything and if there's some amazing secret pattern out there I would love to see it.

This little one-year-old (seriously- how did that happen so fast?!?) had a rockin' rainbow birthday. I'll just voluntarily admit that the cake inspired the whole party theme, it's true- but how awesome is it? That's right- the cake that inspired the color scheme, goodie bags, rainbow Jell-o, and of course, the super spectacular rainbow cardi.

Because I was too busy party hosting, I didn't grab many pictures- I only managed to get this one of Elise in her sweater (I'll try to get more soon):

However, we did get in a mini photo shoot before the party and were able to get some great 1-year shots, including this one-

And unfortunately, International Craft Day was a little forgotten this year- maybe I need to rethink the date for the future.

I was excited to jump on the bandwagon and knit up a Puerperium Cardigan of my own, and even more thrilled when I had the idea of using up some leftover yarn to create a little striped garment (leftover yarn from Placket Neck Sweater and Tugboat Coat).

Now I can't say this was my first time doing stripes, but I do think this may have been the first striped garment I've knit that is not worked in the round. It's shocking how much time is added to a project when you are switching colors every other row. It will definitely have me thinking twice before the next time I just want to do some stash busting.

And now, although the needles have been put away, I'm left with may ends to weave in. I tried out a couple different joins on this project. Some ends I just left out, waiting for me to weave them in. But I also utilized the Russian join and the back join. I have to say, I don't think I have developed a favorite. How do you tackle stripes/ new color joins/ weaving in ends?

With the chill in the air, I have been wearing my wrap ever since it came off the needles the second time.

Who am I kidding? I was wearing it proudly even when it had the uneven ends. It is truly a gorgeous piece - the weight, the drape, the fiber content...ahh!

This time, I used Blue Sky Alpaca Melange for something different (the first time, my sample knit was done in Madelinetosh Pashmina). Each yarn is quite different, but both produce an equally stunning garment- it is by far the most luxurious knit I own (both of them, for that matter- as soon as I finished my second Legacy, my first one arrived in the mail the next day!).

When I purchased my final skein of yarn, I also bought 6 pedestal buttons- 1 large, 5 medium size. The large button can be seen in the first picture above. I use it when I want to wear my wrap as a ...well- wrap, I suppose (maybe I should say "poncho'?). The five smaller buttons are used to hold the ends of the wrap together when I want to wear it more like a scarf or cowl.

Finally, for those of you who have been itching to make your own Legacy, I am happy to report that the pattern is available for download on Ravelry (Yipee!).

Here's some details:

Yarn:

approximately 1000 yards of sportweight yarn

Needles:

US6/4mm

or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge:

20 sts 30 rows = 4"/10mm in stockinette stitch

Interested?

I've purchased the yarn to completely finish my Legacy wrap. With a comment like this from katherinelynn_04, how could I not?

" RIP IT!! it will bother you if several years down the line it still isn't fixed. Plus, don't you
want to be an example for your daughter? Finishing what you started and all that? Plus, it
might make it's way into being an heirloom. Don't make it an unfinished one! "

Yes, there were many votes for keeping it as is, but the mere fact that it's my own pattern should be enough reason for me to do it up right!

So, with yarn purchased, half the battle is over- I still dread picking up 100 loose stitches- but it is decided- it must be done (if not for me- than for my daughter!).

For those of you asking more details about my weaving project from yesterday, I've added the project to Ravelry with all necessary info. I can't believe I didn't even post about the yarn used, I guess I was too excited to share the project (it's Cascade Magnum, btw- I've updated yesterday's post, too). '

And finally, many of you have asked when Legacy will be available alone as a pattern. I plan on working this weekend to get things ready to roll by early next week- stay tuned!

Almost forgot... I know I will have some questions about them- so I better go ahead and share. The buttons in the first picture are Jul Silver Pedestal Buttons. I originally shared about them here and am excited to finally have some in my possession. I'll show you more when my wrap is totally finished and they are all in place :-)

For those of you who have experienced the joy of a quick cowl knit up in bulky weight yarn- you ain't seen nothing yet! Oh- the pleasure of weaving with chunky weight yarn might just surpass the glee produced with an "instant gratification knit".

After warping my little loom (which honestly didn't take more than 20 minutes), I probably spent under a half hour actually weaving this cowl. If I would've left it as a chunky scarf, that would have been it!

I did decide that I wanted to experiment a bit and see if I could produce a round cowl from my loom. So, the most time was invested weaving each end in to the other end. It did produce a seam (as seen below), but it is hardly noticeable while on.

I am still quite in love with the look of woven fabric, and now I feel I have seen a range of what a simple rigid heddle loom can produce. From lace weight to bulky weight, it seems you can't go wrong.

What do you think? I think I just found my new favorite cowl!

How much yarn do I need? Oh, about 8 more rows worth- what a bummer.

Because I was a little too anxious to see my finished wrap all blocked and beautiful, I decided to cast off where I was and come back to it. Hmm- not sure if that was a good idea or bad. So, although I have worn it out a couple times (pictures coming soon), I now have to decide if it is worth it to go purchase another skein of yarn , rip out my bind off, pick up all those loose stitches, and knit a few rows of garter

stitch. Thoughts? What would you do in the given situation?

So, what was once Elise’s “roll-it” has now turned into “let’s wrap it up”! We commonly use this after mealtime, after play time, before nap, etc. But today, Elise has a message for her dad.

For over a year now, this bag has been sitting downstairs. It’s contents? The start of something beautiful:

Joe picked out this pattern (Arshile) and yarn (Berocco Remix) for our unborn child last year when visiting …have you any Wool? in Berkley, MI.

*photo from Berocco yarn*
He decided he would knit the sweater up in the 12 month size, thus allowing him “plenty of time”. Working for him is the fact that Elise is small, and is just starting to get into 9 month clothing. Working against him is the fact that his gauge is generally tight, and I’m not sure if he changed needle size to compensate for this.

I’ll be the first to admit that this girl is not at a loss of hand knit sweaters, but I think it’s time she receives a special garment from her father, anyone else out there agree?

So Elise’s message today is simple: “Da-da, let’s wrap it up!”

ps… Elise says she is holding your guitar hostage until you finish.
