A New Sweater

As if this little girl didn't already have enough hand knit sweaters, right?!

But, for Christmas, we had to make something special. This pattern was completely dreamed up in my head and it was fun to see it 'come to life' over the holidays. It was a little complicated with all the colorwork and sizing- so things may have been "fudged" a bit, but it came together. For that reason, I wouldn't count on a pattern coming out of this- my notes are mere scribbles, and my charts are hand drawn with multiple dark lines being drawn through.

I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to post. When I take a break, it's always hard to come back. I feel I owe some sort of apology or really impressive post, but then I realize I just need to start up to get the ball rolling. The holidays were grand, complete with much time visiting family and friends.

Unfortunately, Joe and I started 2012 off on the wrong foot, with a dreadful case of (what we believe to be) food poisoning. I'm really not sure how we would have gotten through that situation without family nearby, but we have pulled through and finally seem to be on the other side of it.

I hope your holidays were wonderful and that you are now enjoying some selfish knitting- it is time for that, right?!

Just a Little Christmas Block Party

Sorry for the silence over the past few days- I've been busy...

After 4-5 days of not having time to knit a stitch last week/this past weekend, I was starting to worry that I wouldn't have enough time to work on Elise's Christmas sweater. After just a few evening knitting sessions, the sweater prevailed!

So what is it? I'll be teaching at Squam this next June!

After seeing beautiful pictures and hearing remarkable experiences about this event for the past couple years, I could not believe it when I received an email back in July requesting my presence. I am seriously- take a look at the list of teachers. I'm not sure how I was included in this amazing group, but I am beyond honored and truly humbled.

Christmas Goodness Sneak Peek

Elise's 2nd Christmas Stocking

By the title of this post, you may have believed that I am some sort of super mom that knits a different stocking for her child each Christmas. But, the sad reality is that Elise didn't have a stocking for her first Christmas. Oh well, you can't win them all- better late than never, right?

As mentioned before, I loved the idea of incorporating the motif from Elise's first Christmas outfit into her stocking. Since I never found an exact stocking I wanted to make, this was the perfect solution. After I originally posted about possible stocking options, I did stumble upon another great stocking. Enter the Falling Snow Stocking by Jennifer Hoel.

Turns out,

I used elements from the Falling Snow Stocking, along with inspiration from her 1st Christmas sweater dress to create a stocking that will (hopefully) be with her for a lifetime.

It's a bit more flashy than our stockings, but that's ok. I figure they don't have to match. And, when we have more to add, we can have a whole eclectic collection of handknit stockings.

2011 Christmas Sweater... and Winners

When I was just about finished with Elise's stocking, an idea popped in to my head. Granted, I wasn't planning on making Elise a Christmas sweater this year. After all- how could I top last year's outfit?

But, a little inspiration goes a long way and before I knew, all I wanted to do was get the stocking off the needles to start the perfect sweater.

But, before I get ahead of myself, the stocking is finished. I'm pretty happy about how it looks- It's blocking now and I'll have pictures soon!

Uncertainty

I'm still not 100% sure of what this stocking will look like in the end, but I have cast on and started working. I'm thinking of just doing the stocking in red and white and leaving out the blues. Here's a reminder of what Joe and my stockings look like (just scroll down to the last picture)- I think it will blend nicely with just the two colors.

I am incorporating the motif from her 1st Christmas dress, thank you so much for the idea!

Knits in Action- Little Lamby

After posting about Elise's hand knit wardrobe, I realized that I haven't totally kept up with posting pictures of her in her knit garb. A few of the sweaters were knit before she was born, this may explain why there are quite a few gender neutral/ blue items.

The first up is one of my favorite little baby cardigans ever. I have knit it a few times, in fact, I made a smaller version for Elise to come home from the hospital in.

A few weeks ago we spent a couple days in Chicago after a business meeting I attended. It turned out to be a lovely weekend and Elise decided to grace the Magnificent Mile with a few Magnificent knit sweaters.

The weather was just brisk enough for stocking tights and cardigans, but not yet cold enough for heavy coats. They were getting the city all set up for Christmas. Turns out Elise has a little Scrooge in her and decided to un-do some of the Christmas decor:

Adirondack Patterns: Spotlight and Giveaway!

December is an exciting time of year- especially for the knitterly/fibery kinds of people. To help you prep for the holidays, I have sponsor highlights lined up for the next couple weekends.

And with that, let me give you the chance to get to know the ladies of Adirondack Patterns:

Hello, Laura and Julia. Thanks so much for joining me today here at French Press Knits. When it comes to crafting, I find many people have a past with it- is this true with the two of you?

We both began crafting at an early age. Growing up being Identical Twins, we always had each other to play with. Our mom was always teaching us how to cook, bake, craft. From watching our mom make our many identical dresses/clothes, to helping her make the yearly Christmas ornaments that we would gift for presents to family and friends.

Our Maternal Grandmother was a knitting goddess. She taught us how to knit when we were about 9 or 10 years old. Many days were spent watching her little arthritic hands click the needles showing us how to knit and purl. Unfortunately the skill was lost in our teenage years, and we gravitated to sewing instead.

Our Paternal Grandmother, as well as our mom, showed us how to sew a few basic items. We started making "scrunchies" (you remember scrunchies, RIGHT????) as one of our first projects, and gave them out to anyone who wanted one. A few years ago we picked up sewing again, and whipped up a whole bunch of baby items to sell at the local craft fairs. We came up with our own designs, and patterns, and made booties, bibs, bags, blankets, dresses, coloring wraps, burp clothes, you name it, we made it! Unfortunately we closed up shop after the first year due to the huge amount of restrictions on selling handmade items, especially for babies.

Still having an itch to create, we decided to sell our patterns on ETSY, so people could make their own items for their babies. and loved ones. Over time it branched out to include over 60 patterns and tutorials for a variety of sewn, crochet, and knit goods.

What craft takes the largest portion of your time these days?

Julia has an affinity for making her Waldorf Inspired Dolls, and Laura tends to gravitate towards crochet. But we both are equal opportunity crafters. If we understand it, or someone can show us how to do it, we will try it, Julia is more broad in her craftiness, where as Laura is strictly Crochet and Sewing.

Besides crafty things, what other hobbies do you have?

Laura loves play with her boys, bake, to rearrange her furniture, and honestly a large amount of time is spent in front of her laptop/T.V. Julia likes to play with her boy, cook, read, listen to music, and enjoy the outdoors.

What inspires your creativity?

Babies....there we said it. We recently had a new baby (Laura's baby boy) join the family, and he is our main inspiration. We love making things for little ones to wear, or play with. We also find inspiration on Blogger, Etsy, and Pintrest is FULL of incredible ideas.

How did you decide to start a shop together?

I began with a few crochet items, and asked Julia if she wanted to add in her sewing tutorials. The rest is history.

What can we expect to see in the shop in the future?

More crochet patterns, including some items for little girls, and more Waldorf Inspired Dolls accessories and patterns.

A Year of Baby Knitting

After being inspired by Mandy's hand knit hat and mitten collection over at Zig Zag Stitch, I decided I would round up Elise's knit wardrobe from this past year and put it all together. Now before you look at my picture- did you look at Mandy's? Pretty cool to see all those beautiful knits together, huh?

Stocking Stuck

Now that the big birthday celebration is over, I can move on to my next knitting event: Christmas. More specifically, Elise's Christmas stocking. Yes, I know, she was around last Christmas, but I didn't have time to whip up a stocking- at least she had a cute Christmas outfit- remember?

Knowing that Elise will (probably) be awake this year to open presents, I figure I need to jump on a stocking for her. The problem? I can't find the perfect pattern. The solution? You, of course.

So far, I do have a few stockings favorited on Ravelry, so here's a little roundup:

The dark blues are more different than they look. The first is hand dyed yarn, the second is a heather blue with a little more green in it.

This little one-year-old (seriously- how did that happen so fast?!?) had a rockin' rainbow birthday. I'll just voluntarily admit that the cake inspired the whole party theme, it's true- but how awesome is it? That's right- the cake that inspired the color scheme, goodie bags, rainbow Jell-o, and of course, the super spectacular rainbow cardi.

Because I was too busy party hosting, I didn't grab many pictures- I only managed to get this one of Elise in her sweater (I'll try to get more soon):

However, we did get in a mini photo shoot before the party and were able to get some great 1-year shots, including this one-

And unfortunately, International Craft Day was a little forgotten this year- maybe I need to rethink the date for the future.

All The Colors of the Rainbow

Now that my ends are almost all woven in, it's time to start thinking about my next project.

Tying Up Some Loose Ends

Or more like weaving them in.

I was excited to jump on the bandwagon and knit up a Puerperium Cardigan of my own, and even more thrilled when I had the idea of using up some leftover yarn to create a little striped garment (leftover yarn from Placket Neck Sweater and Tugboat Coat).

Now I can't say this was my first time doing stripes, but I do think this may have been the first striped garment I've knit that is not worked in the round. It's shocking how much time is added to a project when you are switching colors every other row. It will definitely have me thinking twice before the next time I just want to do some stash busting.

And now, although the needles have been put away, I'm left with may ends to weave in. I tried out a couple different joins on this project. Some ends I just left out, waiting for me to weave them in. But I also utilized the Russian join and the back join. I have to say, I don't think I have developed a favorite. How do you tackle stripes/ new color joins/ weaving in ends?

My Legacy/Pattern Release

I can happily report that my Legacy wrap is totally finished- now with matching ends and all! It's just perfect and ready to keep me warm in the coming months.

With the chill in the air, I have been wearing my wrap ever since it came off the needles the second time.

Who am I kidding? I was wearing it proudly even when it had the uneven ends. It is truly a gorgeous piece - the weight, the drape, the fiber content...ahh!

This time, I used Blue Sky Alpaca Melange for something different (the first time, my sample knit was done in Madelinetosh Pashmina). Each yarn is quite different, but both produce an equally stunning garment- it is by far the most luxurious knit I own (both of them, for that matter- as soon as I finished my second Legacy, my first one arrived in the mail the next day!).

When I purchased my final skein of yarn, I also bought 6 pedestal buttons- 1 large, 5 medium size. The large button can be seen in the first picture above. I use it when I want to wear my wrap as a ...well- wrap, I suppose (maybe I should say "poncho'?). The five smaller buttons are used to hold the ends of the wrap together when I want to wear it more like a scarf or cowl.

Finally, for those of you who have been itching to make your own Legacy, I am happy to report that the pattern is available for download on Ravelry (Yipee!).

For Those Who Are Wondering...

I've purchased the yarn to completely finish my Legacy wrap. With a comment like this from katherinelynn_04, how could I not?

" RIP IT!! it will bother you if several years down the line it still isn't fixed. Plus, don't you
want to be an example for your daughter? Finishing what you started and all that? Plus, it
might make it's way into being an heirloom. Don't make it an unfinished one! "

Yes, there were many votes for keeping it as is, but the mere fact that it's my own pattern should be enough reason for me to do it up right!

So, with yarn purchased, half the battle is over- I still dread picking up 100 loose stitches- but it is decided- it must be done (if not for me- than for my daughter!).

For those of you asking more details about my weaving project from yesterday, I've added the project to Ravelry with all necessary info. I can't believe I didn't even post about the yarn used, I guess I was too excited to share the project (it's Cascade Magnum, btw- I've updated yesterday's post, too). '

And finally, many of you have asked when Legacy will be available alone as a pattern. I plan on working this weekend to get things ready to roll by early next week- stay tuned!

Almost forgot... I know I will have some questions about them- so I better go ahead and share. The buttons in the first picture are Jul Silver Pedestal Buttons. I originally shared about them here and am excited to finally have some in my possession. I'll show you more when my wrap is totally finished and they are all in place :-)

Looming Around

Or maybe I should say "looming a round", which is exactly what I did in my latest weaving project.

For those of you who have experienced the joy of a quick cowl knit up in bulky weight yarn- you ain't seen nothing yet! Oh- the pleasure of weaving with chunky weight yarn might just surpass the glee produced with an "instant gratification knit".

After warping my little loom (which honestly didn't take more than 20 minutes), I probably spent under a half hour actually weaving this cowl. If I would've left it as a chunky scarf, that would have been it!

I did decide that I wanted to experiment a bit and see if I could produce a round cowl from my loom. So, the most time was invested weaving each end in to the other end. It did produce a seam (as seen below), but it is hardly noticeable while on.

I am still quite in love with the look of woven fabric, and now I feel I have seen a range of what a simple rigid heddle loom can produce. From lace weight to bulky weight, it seems you can't go wrong.

Almost There...

But not quite. Do you ever hit a road block on a project that just takes away all your drive to see it through to completion? Classic scenario for me. Last week, when I was finishing my Legacy Wrap, I ran out of yarn.

How much yarn do I need? Oh, about 8 more rows worth- what a bummer.

Because I was a little too anxious to see my finished wrap all blocked and beautiful, I decided to cast off where I was and come back to it. Hmm- not sure if that was a good idea or bad. So, although I have worn it out a couple times (pictures coming soon), I now have to decide if it is worth it to go purchase another skein of yarn , rip out my bind off, pick up all those loose stitches, and knit a few rows of garter

stitch. Thoughts? What would you do in the given situation?

Let’s Wrap it Up

Although Elise has never been too interested in clapping, she has always enjoyed the rolling motion from pat-a-cake. Since she was about six months old, she has been performing “roll-it” anytime she gets excited. With mobility, we’ve been able to see Elise’s true colors show, as she is always leaving one toy to move on to the next. Her attention span seems quite short- I positively don’t know where she got that from (insert as much sarcasm as you feel necessary).

So, what was once Elise’s “roll-it” has now turned into “let’s wrap it up”! We commonly use this after mealtime, after play time, before nap, etc. But today, Elise has a message for her dad.

For over a year now, this bag has been sitting downstairs. It’s contents? The start of something beautiful:

Joe picked out this pattern (Arshile) and yarn (Berocco Remix) for our unborn child last year when visiting …have you any Wool? in Berkley, MI.

He decided he would knit the sweater up in the 12 month size, thus allowing him “plenty of time”. Working for him is the fact that Elise is small, and is just starting to get into 9 month clothing. Working against him is the fact that his gauge is generally tight, and I’m not sure if he changed needle size to compensate for this.
