The Obamas – Bo

Referred to as “the first dog,” Portuguese Water Dog Bo was gifted to the President Barack Obama and his family by Senator Ted Kennedy in April 2009.

Bo belongs to a hypoallergenic breed and was specially chosen because of eldest daughter Malia Obama’s allergies. The President had promised his daughters a dog during his election campaign. Bo is valued at $1,600, according to the President’s financial disclosure forms last year.

Four children’s’ books featuring Bo have already been published and he’s even traveled to Hawaii in December he went on vacation with America’s First Family.

Britney Spears – Bit Bit

Britney Spears’ Chihuahua Bit Bit shot to fame in 2004 when the singer hit the red carpet at an awards show with the tiny dog wearing a $100,000 diamond-encrusted collar.

In those days Spears led the trend of owning “accessory dogs.” She dressed up Bit Bit in faux mink coats, and the dog had a “princess bed” to sleep on. Despite, all this pampering, Spears was named the worst celebrity dog owner of the year in a 2006 magazine poll for treating her dogs like accessories.

That was followed by some highly publicized, erratic behavior in 2007 when the pop star reportedly let her new Yorkshire terrier puppy poop on a $6,700 Zac Posen dress during a photo shoot.

Elton John – Arthur

Elton John reportedly owns over 20 dogs including border terriers, an Irish wolfhound, a Labrador, German shepherds and Spaniels.

The singer is often seen on the red carpet with his Cocker Spaniel Arthur (pictured). The dog was reportedly the best man at the Elton John’s 2005 wedding to filmmaker David Furnish.

The couple owns three other American Cocker Spaniels including Marilyn, who is Arthur’s “wife” and their daughter Isobella. Arthur also made a guest appearance in the singer’s 2006 album The Captain and the Kid and is mentioned in the album credit as Arthur: woof-bells .

Jessica Alba – Sid and Nancy

Jessica Alba is often photographed dining, shopping and walking the streets with her two pugs named Sid and Nancy. She also has a rescued American bulldog, Bowie, whom she named after musician David Bowie.

An avid animal lover, the actress came under fire in 2009 after photos surfaced of her plastering posters of a great white shark across several locations in Oklahoma City to bring awareness to the shark’s dwindling population. Alba later apologized to the city for the vandalism and wasn’t charged in the case.

For the comfort of her dogs, Alba hired a designer to create a special room for her pets, which includes a lawn made from synthetic material.

Jessica Simpson – Daisy

Jessica Simpson’s dog, five-year-old Daisy, made headlines in 2009 when the singer said the Maltese poodle (Maltipoo) had been snatched by a coyote in L.A.

Nick Lachey, her husband at the time, gave Simpson the dog in 2004. Daisy appeared on the former couple’s reality TV show Newlyweds and was often photographed being ferried around in a Louis Vuitton dog carrier. The dog has even appeared on-stage during Simpson’s concerts.

The singer has recently spoken about being a “new mom” to fiance Eric Johnson’s Airedale terrier Bentley.

Mariah Carey – Jack

Mariah Carey has four Jack Russell terriers.

The oldest named Jack (pictured) was a gift from Carey’s ex-husband and record executive Tommy Mottola. Jack has made many cameo appearances in Carey’s music videos such as Dreamlover and All I want for Christmas is you . He also appeared in the movie Glitter and has three fan websites dedicated to him.

In 2005, Jack was prevented from flying in first class with Carey because of his size. In March of this year reports surfaced that Carey had put all her dogs in therapy to help prepare them for the birth of her twins.

Oprah Winfrey – Sophie

Oprah Winfrey has often used her talk show to highlight the plight of homeless and abused animals. When her pet of 13 years, Cocker Spaniel Sophie (pictured) died in March 2008, she paid her an emotional tribute on the show, saying the dog was her true love and made her a kinder, gentler person.

Oprah often puts out updates on the health of her dogs on her website. Last year on her 56 th birthday, the talk show queen bought herself two 14-week-old Springer Spaniels named Sunny and Lauren.

Paris Hilton – Tinkerbell

Socialite Paris Hilton’s Teacup Chihuahua Tinkerbell has appeared in all five seasons of her reality TV show The Simple Life, often dressed in designer chic to mirror the heiress’ appearance.

A parody on Tinkerbell’s life titled “The Tinkerbell Hilton Diaries: My Life Tailing Paris Hilton” was released in 2004 by writer D. Resin. She also made headlines that year when she went missing for six days after Hilton’s house was burglarized. Hilton offered a $5,000 reward for the dog’s return. Details of Tinkerbell’s return were not publicized.

Hilton created a clothing line called Little Lily in 2007, which she said was inspired by dressing her 17 dogs.

The Queen’s Corgis – Susan

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has owned over 30 Corgis since her father, King George VI, brought home the first royal Corgis, Dookie and Jane in 1933.

In 1944, when Elizabeth was 18, she was given a Corgi named Susan, from which several offspring were bred. However, in 2009, it was reported that the Queen would no longer breed dogs after two of her pets died. Currently, the Queen has four Corgis named Linnet, Monty, Willow and Holly and three Dorgis named Cider, Candy and Vulcan. A Dorgi is a crossbreed between a Dachshund and a Corgi.

The Queen’s Corgis have their own “Corgi Room” and their daily menu varies from chuck steak to poached chicken or rabbit.

To celebrate Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding, cake designer Michelle Wibowo created a giant Corgi cake, setting a Guinness World Record for the largest dog-shaped cake at four feet high and weighing about 150 pounds.

Williams Sisters Dogs

Tennis sister duo Venus and Serena Williams bring their dogs to the court after they win a match and are often seen in the stands with their dogs while they watch each other play.

Venus has a pair of Cavalier King Charles spaniels and a Havanese, while Serena has a Jack Russell terrier and a Maltese.

In 2007, after winning the U.S. Open for the first time, Serena said she splurged and bought a Jack Russell terrier named Jackie from a pet store in New York. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey Serena said, “I don’t know which was a better souvenir, the title or Jackie.”

Boatman

Engineers and evolutionary biologists in Scotland and France recorded the boatman—which is roughly the size of a grain of rice—”singing” in a tank. The aquatic insect’s songs peaked at 105 decibels, roughly equivalent to the volume of a pounding jackhammer within arm’s reach.

The chirps are loud enough that humans can hear the sounds while standing at the edge of a boatman’s pond. Fortunately for nature lovers, though, nearly all the sound is lost when the noises cross from water to air.

Remarkably, the boatman creates his songs by rubbing his penis against his belly, in a process similar to how crickets chirp. Sound-producing genitalia are relatively rare within the animal kingdom, but animals have evolved hundreds of other ways to boost their hoots, howls, and snaps.

Coqui Frog

Only the males of the common coqui frog sing, but their calls, recorded at peaks of a hundred decibels from three feet (a meter) away, make them the loudest known amphibians.

The nocturnal frog’s two-part “co-qui” call has a two-part meaning: Other male frogs respond to the territorial “co” part of the call, while females are attracted to the “qui.”

In the coqui’s native habitat of Puerto Rico, the frogs are considered part of the island’s natural heritage. But in Hawaii, where the frogs are quickly establishing themselves as an invasive species, residents have spent many sleepless nights due to the noisy frogs, which, in aggregate, are comparable to a lawnmower running all night.

The Blue Whale

The blue whale is the loudest mammal of them all, with vocalizations that reach 188 decibels.

Blue whales don’t have songs as complex as those of humpback whales, but their low-frequency “pulses”— some below the range of human hearing—have been recorded more than 500 miles (805 kilometers) away.

A few years ago researchers found that the whales had been lowering the frequencies of their songs even more—by up to 30 percent since the 1960s in some populations. One theory suggests that the whales no longer need to sing at “high” pitches to be heard at a distance, because the species, while still endangered, has rebounded since whale hunting was banned in 1966.

The Howler Monkey

The howler monkey is the loudest land animal. Its calls, which some say are actually more like growls, can be heard up to three miles (five kilometers) away.

The monkey’s volume comes from its enlarged hyoid bone, a U-shaped bone in the howler’s throat that “isn’t actually hooked to any of the [other] bones, so it kind of just hangs there,” said Dell Guglielmo, caretaker for two howler monkeys at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The enlarged bone creates a throat sac in which the monkey’s calls resonate before booming out.

The Mole Cricket

The mole cricket species Gryllotalpa vinae is the loudest of the insects. The critter uses its specialized front legs to dig a megaphone-shaped burrow. Standing inside that dugout, a cricket can chirp loudly enough that humans can hear it nearly 2,000 feet (600 meters) away.

Microphones placed three feet (a meter) from a cricket’s burrow entrance have recorded peak sound levels of 92 decibels, or about the volume of a lawn mower.

In fact, using the burrow, G. vinae is able to turn an astonishing 30 percent of its energy into sound.

The Oilbirds

You wouldn’t want to be around when oilbirds come home to roost—these cave dwellers, the loudest known birds, can be deafening when gathered in large groups.

Oilbirds use echolocation to navigate in completely dark caves. But, unlike the calls of most bats, the birdcalls are within the range of human hearing. Each bird can produce squawks and clicks up to a hundred decibels at close range, and colonies can contain thousands of birds.

The oilbirds appear to use echolocation only within their cave homes and not during their nocturnal foraging. This could be because their sensitivity isn’t very high: In one experiment, oilbirds flew straight into plastic discs that were 4 inches (10 centimeters) wide, but they were able to avoid 8-inch (20-centimeter) disks and larger.

The Snapping Shrimp

The snapping shrimp doesn’t sing, chirp, wail, or hoot, but it just might be responsible for the loudest noise produced by any living being.

These shrimp stun prey by closing their specialized claws quickly enough to shoot jets of water out at 62 miles (100 kilometers) an hour, forming a low-pressure bubble of vapor behind the jet. When that bubble collapses, it produces a hot, loud mini-explosion of 200 decibels, which stuns or even kills the shrimp’s dinner.

Usually found in grasslands, open forests and savanna, the Asian cobra is a widespread and common species from central and eastern Asia, Vietnam and Thailand.

AUSTRALIAN BOX JELLYFISH

This jellyfish has a venom that attacks a human’s cardiac and nervous systems and if it stings you, you have virtually no chance of surviving unless treated straight away.

Its tentacles have the ability to sting even when separated from the jellyfish, making it a very dangerous creature.

Where:

Box jellyfish are more numerous after rain and move towards the shore in calm waters when the tide is rising. They are commonly found across the northern top of the country as well as Queensland and the northern Western Australia coast.

CAPE BUFFALO

You don’t want to look a Cape Buffalo in the eye… these creatures charge head-on! And with two big, sharp horns and the weight of a small car, that’s quite a dangerous position to be in.

Known as the “widow maker” in Africa, this buffalo gores and kills more than 200 people every year.

Where:

Cape Buffaloes are found throughout Africa from Egypt down to South Africa. As one of the continents most successful grazers, they are often found close to water and tall, coarse grassland.

CROCODILE

Be wary of where you sunbathe! This scaled creature could be lurking close by…

You won’t have much time to react if one snaps at you. A croc’s most deadly weapon is its super-fast reflexes. Once it has you between its jaws, it will usually drown you before gobble time.

Where:

These aquatic reptiles live in the tropics throughout Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia. Crocs gather in freshwater habitats like rivers, lakes and wetlands.

ELEPHANTS

Their immense size and super-sharp tusks puts elephants in at number seven on the list of the world’s most deadly animals – they stomp and kill about 500 people each year.

Weighing a hefty seven tonnes, how Dumbo managed to flaps his ears fast enough to lift off the ground is beyond us.

There are three species of elephants remaining today; the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. Not surprisingly, you can find them in Africa and Asia.

GREAT WHITE SHARK

The fact this beast has some three thousand teeth should give you a clue as to his fearsomeness. While they usually feed on fish, seals and other sea animals, should a surfer find him/herself in the wrong place at the wrong time they might be mistaken for dinner.

Humans aren’t prey of choice though. With a high ratio of bone to muscle and fat, the shark’s digestion is too slow to cope.

Where:

Great Whites can be found in almost all coastal waters with a temperature between 12 and 24 degrees. There are greater concentrations of the species in the United States, Japan, Africa and Oceania.

MOSQUITO

You wouldn’t think this tiny critter is a particularly deadly animal, but the mosquito is responsible for the deaths of more than two million people each year.

In most places the worst a mosquito will do to you is leave you with an itchy bite for a couple of days. However, in some regions mosquitoes act as a vector agent carrying disease-causing viruses and parasites from person to person without being affected themselves.

The most common mosquito-borne diseases include yellow fever, dengue fever and malaria.

There are more than 3500 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world, but it is believed the animal carries and transmits diseases to 700 million people annually in Africa, Latin America, Russia and much of Asia.
