The Loop HK is an online lifestyle news site about the best of Hong Kong. This recent interview with Tracy was part of their Next Up series on game changers and up-and-coming entrepreneurs in our home city. From fashion designers to tech startup founders, the interviewees are made up of a diverse group of minds behind unique and growing brands.

It was interesting to condense our story into just a few questions. For example, we are frequently asked about how we got started when telling people about our jewelry brand. On the other hand, talking about the future of our business reminded us of our mission.

Jade is an important part of our founders’ family as well as in Chinese culture, and we hope to keep pushing the limits and spreading the beauty of jade to audiences all over the world.

In 2017, we hosted two Hong Kong pop-up shops, collaborated with Jouer to pair our jewelry with their signature macarons, and sold the most Vivi bracelets.

Over the holidays we hosted another pop-up showroom, allowing us to have an intimate setting to meet and greet our customers in Hong Kong. It gave us such a warm feeling that we would start off as strangers with our customers, but through our interactions we could become friends.

This time, we showcased unique pieces that were exclusive to the event and designs that are launching in our online jewelry shop. Some of our all-time most popular pieces are jade bangles, which we will continue to make available to purchase online.

Pretty as a Rose

In the Winter 2017 issue, in a feature named "Pretty as a Rose", the magazine wrote, "flattering on all skin tones, rose gold adds a romantic and timeless touch to your wedding ensemble."

We couldn't agree more with the idea of wearing rose gold jewelry for brides. The pieces we have in our collection are subtle, dainty pieces that let the bride's happy face shine. Custom jewelry pieces can also be ordered to create one-of-a-kind designs.

Jade in the Modern Era

When we created our first collection of jade jewelry, we designed it with young women in mind. They may not have much exposure to jade stones, so we wanted to bring out the elegant properties of jade using a modern approach. We're proud that our mission is validated in features such as this.

In traditional Chinese weddings, jade is commonly worn by brides and their mothers as a sign of beauty and protection. The most precious jade, the vibrant "imperial jade", is more conventional, but for brides who wanted to step out of the norm can try alternative styles and colors.

We invited VIPs in our community to join us for a relaxed afternoon. While trying on our jade jewelry designs, they also had a taste of the delicious canapés by Jouer. Here are some highlights from the event!

We curated a variety of jade bangles to display at the pop-up, and we had a happy customer bring home a much-coveted Theresa lavender jade bangle. She already owns a smokey green bangle, and is looking forward to letting her bangles jingle together! Even more amazing is that her name is also Theresa – the bangle was definitely calling her name.

Props stylist and fashionista Samantha @samishome came by to try on our pieces. She loved the necklaces in yellow gold against her tanned complexion from her latest Bali trip!

Talented photographers Laura @lauralaviani, Karen @k_a_r_e_n_g, Thomas @thomas_fung all gathered together for some Instagram-ready moments.

The star of the evening was our youngest special guest, Serene. This adorable little one is the namesake behind our Serene jade bracelet.

Designer and blogger Little Laws also stopped by, and after trying on different combinations she chose an Allie jade ring in Mint. It seemed that she was already drawn to the fresh green jade, since her two-toned nails included a similar color.

Our guests were able to lounge around and mingle on that beautiful Friday evening. Jouer designed a set of special mini macarons inspired by our newest Candy Stack rings. The macarons reflected our new rings down to the last detail – from the colored filling to the rose gold dust.

Aside from the custom macarons, Jouer also fed our guests with new mini cakes and savory bites, and kept everyone plenty happy with bubbly prosecco and fine wines. Thanks to Anne and her amazing team for putting together the menu and for making us all feel at home!

Here we're sharing our favorite pancake recipe so you can show your mom how much you care.

Mom's Best Fluffy Pancakes

Yields 12 silver dollar pancakes

Dry ingredients

200g All purpose flour
20g Malted milk powder (optional)
12g Baking powder
6g Salt

Wet ingredients

240g Buttermilk
2 Eggs, separated
60g Butter, melted
30g Sugar

Miscellaneous

Fruits of your choice
(We used 1 cup of blueberries and 1 sliced banana)
Butter
Maple syrup

Let's make pancakes

Sift together the dry ingredients together into a large bowl – flour, malted milk powder, baking powder, and salt.

Don't fret if you can't find malted milk powder; the optional ingredient is mainly for better browning of the pancakes. 

Next, mix the buttermilk, melted butter, sugar, and egg yolks together. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form.

Combine the dry into the wet ingredients. Mix together until just incorporated. Don't over-mix the batter to keep the pancakes from getting tough!

Gently fold the egg whites into the mixture. Remember we're here to make airy, fluffy pancakes, not rubbery ones.

Here's what our batter looks like just before it goes on the skillet.

Heat a non-stick flat skillet on medium heat. Once the pan is hot enough, add some pancake batter onto the dry pan. No oil is needed; you'll have beautiful golden-brown and flat pancakes from the dry pan!

Once bubbles are forming in the batter, it's time to gently flip it to the other side.

These pancakes are a little larger than silver dollar pancakes, and takes about 3 minutes for each side to turn golden brown. Of course, this depends on your pan and the amount of heat you have on.

Now, place your pretty pancakes on a plate, and serve! We add a pad of butter on the warm pancakes, then top ours with banana slices, fresh blueberries, and maple syrup. Adding the fruit makes us feel less guilty about the buttery indulgence!

We like piling the pancakes high in one stack. We love cutting into them all at once!

To make this an even more special experience for mom, you can also decorate your table with seasonal flowers, candles, and other little props.

Last Sunday we had the pleasure of hosting a private showroom to display our current jade jewelry pieces to our VIPs, friends, and family. The event was a collaboration with French handbag and leathergoods brand Just Campagne, which, like us, is a family-run business.

Telling the jade story

One comment we received the most was, "wow, I didn't know that jade came in so many colors!"

Yes indeed, there are many different colors of jade. The colors we carry in our online shop are various shades of green and light lavender. At the pop-up we also showcased some jade pieces that are yellow, white, or black! These will be rolled out on our online jewelry shop over the Christmas holiday season... stay tuned!

At the pop-up showroom, our guests were able to try on our jade jewelry, carefully designed and curated with a younger audience in mind. Jade has a reputation as such an ornate and elegant stone, and people often relate it to an older, more traditional style. We at TRACE have given the precious stone a fresher look with our simple, minimalistic designs.

Colors make the world go round

Our pop-up collaborators Just Campagne have a great story to tell too.

Since 1989, the brand has been making high quality bags, baskets, accessories, and leather goods entirely in France. The cool part is that each single product is totally customizable – from the interior to exterior, and even to the stitching. There seems to be an endless number of combinations one can create.

Our favorite color would be the vibrant yellow "mimosa" hue in the top feature photo, which goes so well with our yellow jade bangle!

We are so happy to have worked with Célia, the daughter of the founder of Just Campagne. The values of their brand as a pioneer of the affordable luxury segment and having been a family-run business really strike a chord with us!

Our collections are made with jadeite stones set in gold, and it's important that you follow this guide to properly store and maintain your jewelry.

How to store jewelry

Jade and gold are sensitive to heat, so be sure to keep the jewelry in a dry, cool place, out of direct sunlight.

To avoid scratches on the jade stones, keep your jewelry in their original gift pouch. There are even 2 compartments inside to keep earrings separate!

Pro tip: We like to keep our personal collection tucked away, organized in a drawer and jewelry boxes. Don't have a pouch for your other precious pieces? A medicine box with compartments will do the trick too.

How to clean jade jewelry?

Clean and shine your jewelry with a soft chamois cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and heat.

To protect from damage by chlorine or salt water, remove your jewelry when swimming or going into a hot tub. You would also avoid the heartbreak when you come out of the water missing a necklace!

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is on the 15th day of the 8th month on the lunar calendar. This is the date that should have the fullest moon of the entire year, and the moon's roundedness signifies the importance of reunion with everyone's community. This year in 2016, the festival falls on the 15th of September on the Western Calendar. 

We have some suggestions on how to celebrate this beautiful festival. It's a time for thanksgiving and gathering with our loved ones, and we hope you will be able to enjoy this holiday to the fullest.

How do we celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival?

Having grown up in Hong Kong, our founders' fondest childhood memories of the festival included a mix of traditional and homegrown modern celebrations. After a large family dinner, the kids would gather outside and light up some festive lanterns. The idea was to be outdoors in the night to marvel at the moon at its brightest and fullest.

Traditionally, Moon Festival lanterns were made of paper, sometimes over bamboo frames in all shapes and sizes, such as rabbits, star fruits, and other forms relevant to the festival. In modern times, the lanterns may also be made in plastic, illuminated by small lightbulbs instead of candles.

Perhaps these plastic versions are safer for the little ones, but they take away the most fun part of the evening – melting down candles and playing with the soft candle wax!

Let's mix it up

Since we at TRACE are all about mixing up the old and new, perhaps we could suggest enjoying some French macarons instead of the traditional mooncakes for your celebrations. There's also a new trend of "mooncarons" – mooncake flavored macarons that would still give you a seasonal taste without the heavy texture.

Jadeite vs. Nephrite

In gemstones, there are actually two types of materials that are classified as jade: jadeite and nephrite.

Jadeite, known as "hard jade" in Chinese, is harder than nephrite, and is considered the more valuable gemstone compared to nephrite. The value of jadeite is mainly determined by its color, level of transparency, and texture.

While nephrite jade comes in colors between white, dark green, red-brown, and black, jadeite actually occurs naturally in a full variety of colors: red, orange, yellow, brown, white, black, and gray. Out of this rainbow of colors, the most treasured colors of jadeite are green (with the emerald green jade, known as Imperial Jade, the ultimate prized hue) and violet. At TRACE, we create our jewelry designs out of traditional and non-conventional colors to let our customers express themselves.

Did you know?

The most expensive piece of jadeite jade jewelry was auctioned at Sotheby's for $27.44 million USD in 2014. The precious jade necklace, featuring 27 large vivid green jadeite beads with an Art Deco diamond and ruby clasp by jeweler Cartier, showed excellent transparency and extremely fine texture. What was impressive was the enormous size of the jade beads, which must have come from the same stone for them to match.

Looking at our Wisteria pieces, we immediately associate them with the flowers we named our color after. It's common for wisteria vines to climb up lattices and trees, and we're reminded of the flowers waving in a blowing breeze when we see our purple jade dangle earrings and pendant necklaces.

Aren't they lovely?

There's a sexiness to the color in our jewelry pieces, especially when paired with the rose gold setting. Depending on the lighting, it can be a very pale purple to almost a pink-ish hue.

The idea behind TRACE sparked when two cousins met for lunch one normal afternoon. From what we can recall, there wasn't any particular reason for us but simply to catch up. Our leisurely hour stretched to two when we had an idea of creating a twist to our family's traditional jewelry business, and making unique, contemporary jade jewelry to sell online.

Why jade?

It's a beautiful precious stone that is often neglected in modern jewelry designs. If you search "jade jewelry" online, you'd mostly find two extremes: old-fashioned styles in poor quality, or high-end designs with impossible price tags.
