It’s never too early to start planning the most wonderful time of the year!  I’m usually terrible with last minute stocking stuffer things but I’m totally determined to get it together this year!

I’m going to have a designated travelers notebook for all things Holiday and I’ve decided to spruce it up a bit with some of last years December Magic release!

This is a standard size travelers notebook in which I’ve printed out my Holiday insert.  The cover decoration is a wonderful Holiday plaid but I decided to tone it down to create a vignette by having a white opaque sticky paper as a base for my handsome hubby! I used two journal cards, a chipboard piece and some striped washi to finish it out.

On the other side is a full dashboard insert.  I’ve used this journal card where I’ve created a clipping mask in the ‘d’ and inserted my own winter tree pic.  Above is a quote from one of my favorite songs…..

…’Sleigh Ride’. Karen Carpenter’s version is by far my favorite.

Further back in my TN, I’ve got a quick layered tag.  This will be easy to add to any last minute gift. It’s just a shrunken and trimmed journal card with some washi and a gold star on top of two pre-made tags.

The other side of the dashboard from above is this textured ‘merry’ card with a accent stripe and a wood grain finish.   OLB journal cards are so very versatile!

All of these trips were actually medical related but we made the best of each trip and got some fun photos along the way! At first I wasn’t sure how to document the trip but then thought a Traveler’s Notebook style would be best. But, instead of using an actual TN though, I will be using a binder/album which will be for my medical photos and stories so they aren’t in a notebook style.

For the first page, I used my iPad and Apple pencil to create the “Winston-Salem” title and added the text in Photoshop. Once printed, I used a neutral patterned paper for the background and stitched the journaling piece on top to add some texture. I also added some floral pieces which I absolutely love! The colors in the florals kind of set the color scheme for the whole project.

In between the two large pages, I added an small page for me to add a photo which went with the story of our first trip and on the back of it, there is journaling to go along with the next page. The second large page documents dinner during our second trip which was really lovely! I kept things simple but added a few embellishments, as well as stitching. I got a new sewing machine so I was sewing basically anything I could!

The last page is documenting the last trip up and these photos were of me and Clara, my service dog, while at lunch after one of the tests I had done. They were so cute and I’m so glad my mom captured them for me! I did a simple grid with a patterned paper and piece from an element pack to complete it. This page was kept very simple and while I actually had more planned for it, I really like how it turned out!

Here you can see a little bit of the floral piece peeking through as well as a better look at the stitching. I didn’t worry too much about getting the stitching perfectly straight, in fact, I think it looks quite nice when it has a little bit of movement to it.

To finish off the last page, I got some vellum and used my sewing machine and a couple of different stitches to sew across the bottom of the page. This gave the page wonderful texture and I also had a place to add in this stamped phrase. When looking through my stamps, I came across this and knew I had to use it!

Welcome back to the One Little Bird blog!

This week, I’m sharing my process for creating easy monthly review pages in my Bangkok travel journal.

Since I collected somewhat random photos during the month, I decided to collect them into a monthly review spread and have them documented in at least one place.

I love the idea of monthly spreads because it is easy to include as many or as few pictures as you like. Plus, “random photos” now have a place to go to.

There’s huge flexibility if you decide to create specific pages for specific events, but everything else can go into the monthly spreads, together with a list of written highlights.

The great thing about this process is that it is easily replicated to other layouts or themes.

Here’s what I did:

1. Choose the month you want to document.

I chose January, but really, you can start anywhere.

2. Narrow down photos.

This part of the process is simplified if you organize your photos by month, the way I do. I created a separate folder on my computer and copied the photos I wanted to use for this month’s spread.

3. Find a template to use.

I created my own template in Photoshop using clipping masks. But you can use any template that suits you best.

For the masks in the template, I made them the same size in order to keep the photos consistent and unified.

Another way to achieve unity is to group photos according to theme, even within the spread. For example, I grouped all my class photos together, and all the airplane photos together.

4. Choose a kit.

I liked how nicely the Duly Noted kit coordinated with my photos, which is what I used for this spread.

5. Design your page.

This is probably the most fun part about the monthly pages. I chose a muted ledger background and added some fun design elements. I created a visual triangle with the banner, floral die cuts and circle embellishment to tie the page together.

6. Record your monthly highlights.

In the corner, I recorded a quick recap of what happened during the month.

So that’s it! A super quick and easy way to document one month in one go.

Here is a look at the full spread using the Roam kit. We had lots of pictures from our trip so the documentation goes on for a few more pages.  I wanted to make sure that I had journaling for all the pages so I needed lots of filler cards to fill the extra card slots.  I used inspiration from the kit to fill all the spaces and create a clean, balanced layout.

I used the “See the World” and “Go” card as inspiration for the base colors for the layout.  After printing out all the journaling cards I looked thru the papers and embellishments to find elements that would bring balance to the spread.

I created a journaling card on the left side of the spread by adding a green sentiment to the top of a card.  The repeats the green on both sides of the spread but still keeps the spread nice and clean with lots of white space.

To balance the blue on the spread and create a visual triangle I used the “Travelogue” tag from the elements and turned it into a journaling card that I could add my thoughts and feelings to.

I loved this little journaling card as it was printed but I needed to add another wood veneer embellishment to balance the left and right side of the spread.  I found this little circle tree embellishment that was a perfect fit inside the lines of the card.  It even matched the theme and feel of the layout!

I was SO excited when I found this coordinating blue globe in my stash!  I added a little sentiment from the elements kit and a red geo tag.  A perfect addition to the spread.

I’m a firm believer in emotional scrapping especially when things are not quite unicorns and rainbows. Since I’m not a writer or heavy jounaler, I turn to little bits of paper for my personal therapy.  But what about looking at it years later and remembering what happened that made me so angry? Will I look at this piece of paper and hate all over again? Well, in my experience, time has a way of dulling the emotions or thoughts that directly participate the outburst of crafting. Also, it’s not so much the remembering how I felt when I look back on it, it’s how I think I’ve grown from that situation that made me mad. Anyway…lets get to this page.

I started off with 4 pictures, one of which I added 2 word digital stamps from the ‘Live a Little’ Collection.  The other 3 were nestled in a row using a digital paper behind them for accent.

Some watercolor paint in the color ‘frustrated’ brown was thrown onto my paper before I did any placing of the papers.  I did print out 3 additional pieces of paper besides the background paper, while it was drying, to help with the layering process.  Two of them were full sheets of patterned paper and the other was a collection of elements from the collection.

Then I began to layer.  Trying to purposely angle the paper (’cause I was mad at the world) to make it look pretty random, although it was not.  I did add a white tag at the bottom of the page and turned up the edge to nestle in another one of the printed digital elements, then added a few puffy alphas on the side to ground the piece.

I used some staples and these 2 mini clips for hardware just to add some more layering elements. And like in today’s layout, I sometimes use the photo trimmings within the layout.  The colors and textures tend to match the focal point picture even as cast offs. With the addition of a few stickers and washi strips that is just about how this all came together.

Hi friends, welcome back to the One Little Bird blog!

I’m working in my Bangkok travel Moleskine this month and I’m excited to share what I’ve been able to create!

Prior to creating these pages, I was struggling to get into a good flow for documenting this season of life.

Since recently I’ve been gravitating towards more digital memory keeping with mainly creating spreads in Photoshop and then just printing them out, I decided to try this method for my Bangkok travel journal. Another consideration for using this method is that it keeps things really slim, since I want to avoid an excessively bulky journal at the end. This type of documenting is also fuss-free and travel-friendly because it’s easy to experiment with and requires minimal supplies – just your laptop, some digital kits and your creativity! The sky’s the limit and it is perfect for documenting on the go.

To document a friend’s weekend visit, I chose to use the Between Us digital kit. They were the perfect colors for our weekend adventures together.

For each spread, I created two spreads on a blank canvas in Photoshop first. I chose a neutral solid paper for the background. Then I created clipping masks and added my photos.

The fun part was getting to choose the embellishments – which ones to use and where they would go! For me, choosing the right embellishments is necessary to complement the spread, so I looked for natural spaces for different elements, while balancing resting space for the eyes.

I added mainly blue and yellow embellishments to coordinate with the photos and to keep the look consistent. Because I had two spreads, I used repeated elements like the floral doilies and stitched banner to tie the two spreads together, since the photos were from the same weekend.

I added my journaling and title last. To finish, I printed it out on international A4 paper size, cut it in half and adhered it to my travel Moleskine.

It was so easy creating this spread in just two afternoons! I also love how easily I was able to incorporate so many photos into these pages with the digital kits.

Today I wanted to show you how I used one of the One Little Bird templates. This was actually my first time using a digital template and it was incredibly easy! The template was a 12×12 but I made it into an 8.5×11 page since that is the format I normally scrap in.While it’s not shown in the photo above, I did have the photo I wanted to scrap in the frame.

I used the “create clipping mask” option to overlay the paper I chose over the template papers. Once everything was how I wanted, I printed it out!

I started by layering the main focus of the page and then adding the accents. To cut out the banners, crosses, and letters I used the print & cut feature on my Silhouette. It made this step so much easier and faster!

For the letters, I also wanted to give them a little bit of thickness so I cut out the phrase two more times and layered them so it created something similar to a Thicker.

The top of the page is pretty simple but I absolutely love clusters like these! I decided to keep the tag that was used in the template since it matched the main gray patterned paper bellow.

I chose to print my journaling on vellum, which I actually haven’t done before, and while it didn’t photograph that well, it looks great in person! I am really pleased with this. I rarely put journaling on my pages, I usually do journaling on the back, so I love that this template pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Here is the final page. I love how it turned out and I know I will definitely be using more templates in the future! I hope this gave you a little inspiration to try them out as well!
