APHA welcomes research papers, panels, roundtables, or workshops covering diversity in the history of American printing. APHA’s 2019 conference, One Press, Many Hands, intends to shed light on the rich history of printing and publishing in America from diverse groups. Generations of past scholars in the field have devoted their research to studies rooted in Eurocentric and Anglo-American histories of printing. However, as the United States becomes increasingly diverse communities of scholarship have sought to engage with issues that have arisen from the transformation in our national demographic makeup.

We invite contributions from members of both traditional and emerging communities of scholarship that center on book and printing history, the book arts, bibliographic studies, print culture studies, LGBTQ+ and ethnic studies and the intersections that exist between them. We invite researchers to explore the history of printing among marginalized and underrepresented minority groups through a critical lens. This includes Asian, Black/African American, disability, feminist, immigrant, indigenous, Jewish, Latinx, LGBTQ+, Muslim, refugee, and other communities that collectively help to make up the diverse fabric of American society. The scope is expansive, encompassing any aspect of book/periodical/ephemera production (typography, papermaking, binding, small press, etc.), printing, printmaking, and graphic design based in North America, South America, the Caribbean, or the Pacific Islands.

In Memory of Elaine Koretsky (1932–2018)

As is true for many of you reading this, I was shocked and saddened to learn about Elaine’s death last month, after a long illness (Hand Papermaking Newsletter no. 125 (January 2019): 2–3).

I have known Elaine and Sidney, who survives her, since the very earliest days of the Friends of the Dard Hunter Paper Museum (now the FDH) that was formalized in 1981 at the annual meeting of the Book and Paper Group of the American Institure for Conservation. She was an officer in that fledging organization and a stalwart member ever since. I think it is true that she, with Sidney at her side, gave a presentation every annual FDHPM/FDH meeting from about 1983 until just a few years ago. And she contributed articles to the HPN for almost two decades (her daughter Donna Koretsky now writes that column).

Especially when it comes to our understanding of hand papermaking in Asia, Elaine ranks as the most important paper historian this country has ever produced. She contributed more to our knowledge on that topic than anyone. She didn’t just follow in Dard Hunter’s footsteps, she and Sidney travelled down many more roads and saw first-hand many more papermakers in numerous countries. She and Sidney often endured perilous situations, all the while exhibiting stubborn determination to find whatever they sought. Later, she retold the stories of those journeys with remarkable candor and a sense of humor. She and Sidney documented what they experienced visually as well as recalled them in many books and articles, presentations, and workshops. She also founded the International Paper Museum in 1994, and some years before that co-founded Carriage House Paper in Brookline, Mass.

For all that Elaine has accomplished to bring the history of hand papermaking to us, we shall always be grateful and we shall never forget her.

Listen to the conversation about Hedi’s childhood in postwar Germany, when she made paper dolls and paper chains, among other things and how she ended up in the US after her studies in Germany. Ulla is Hedi’s daughter and grew up in and around Hedi’s studios in the Bay Area and New York City, where she went to the Cooper Union to study architecture. They talk about how this book came about, the process of creating the book – Ulla rendered the illustrations from Hedi’s hand drawn diagrams; her husband Paul Warchol did the photography; and there was a lot of discussion about the belly band! Hedi talks about a paper made in the Netherlands from the sails of old windmills, and discusses the storage system she uses for all of her models. And they talk about some of the clever inventions that are found within the pages of the book.

Each year Helen produces a how-to book and calendar called the Twelve Months of Paper. The 2019 calendar includes 12 new projects featuring origami, pop-ups, paper cutting, weaving, quilling, and folding; 4 guest artists: Trinity Adams, Béatrice Coron, Ann Martin and Shawn Sheehy; and this year she's donating $5 from each calendar sale to Paper For Water (you can find out more about them in her last podcast episode). Calendars are available here: https://helenhiebertstudio.com/shop/2019-twelve-months-of-paper-calendar/

Experienced dyers are encouraged to bring works-in-progress and ideas for new projects. Beginners will be introduced to the process of papermaking with fibers that are appropriate for this immersion dye process—such as Asian fibers, flax, abaca, and linen cloth—as well as shibori resist dye techniques. Each participant will be supported and encouraged as they use these processes and materials to expand their creative practice with the breadth of possibility offered by the indigo vat.

Studio work will be complemented by discussion of the historic and contemporary use of indigo; informal critiques of works-in-progress; and technical information for papermaking and dyeing in home studios and classrooms. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of what this color can mean, a portfolio of beautiful samples of indigo blue on cloth and handmade paper, completed work, and the information necessary to continue on this path. This will be an intensive week of indigo dyeing for all levels of experience.

...
Instructor: Tana Kellner and Laura Moriarty
Handmade Paper and Encaustic
Dates: August 13 - 17
Studio: Papermaking and R&F
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $60

Join WSW in collaboration with R&F Handmade Paints in Kingston as we create contemporary waxed handmade paper works. During the first two and a half days, participants will work with Tana in WSW’s papermaking studio, using cotton, abaca, flax, and ArtFarm fibers. Once we master the basics, we’ll investigate how to best use the special qualities of each fiber, creating collages by layering, embedding, stenciling, pulp painting, and embossing.

After lunch on Wednesday, we will travel to R&F Handmade Paints, where our handmade paper will be just the starting point. After Laura leads an introduction to basic encaustic techniques, students will create deeply layered collages by working directly on the handmade papers or mounting the handmade sheets on panels. Techniques will include saturating, bending, burnishing, dipping, staining, transferring, drawing, and carving.

...
Instructor: Tatiana Ginsberg
Layering Paper: Blow-outs, Pulp-Painting, Embedding, and Watermarked Images
Dates: July 23-27
Studio: Paper
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $100

Class description:
Everyone is familiar with drawing on paper, but in this class we will make images IN paper. By building images in the wet sheets, participants will achieve a wide range of effects only possible in the papermaking process. Layering paper on paper in the wet stages opens up new possibilities for getting color, form, and imagery into and onto our paper as we make it.

This is a great class for printmakers or anyone who enjoys making marks through drawing, painting, or collage. No prior papermaking experience is necessary, just a willingness to experiment.

...
Instructor: Tana Kellner
Parallel Universes: Handmade Paper and Photography
Dates: July 9 - 13
Studio: Papermaking/Darkroom
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $135
(Lab fee includes darkroom chemistry and photographic emulsion)

Class description:
Artists will rediscover the excitement of working in the photographic darkroom and the pleasures of making paper by hand. We’ll combine these two tactile processes to create painterly photographic prints on handmade paper. The first two days will be spent making paper from various fibers, suitable for photographic purposes. We’ll explore making standard and shaped paper, embedding, and pulp painting all in preparation for the darkroom. Working with traditional photographic negatives (up to 4” x 5”) or making new digital negatives, we’ll spend the rest of the week learning to size and coat the paper before proceeding to print in the darkroom. No previous experience is necessary.

...
Instructor: Sarah Rose Lejeune
Paper Memory
Dates: July 2 - 6
Studio: Papermaking
Class limit: 6
Tuition: $750 members / $800 non-members
Lab fee: $75

Class description:
In this course, we will think through the ways that handmade paper, through its material properties, can hold human imprint. Students will learn to process fibers like abaca and flax with a focus on creating high shrinkage, translucent consistencies suitable for embedding and holding sculptural forms. We will also explore cotton’s potential for low relief casting and embossing. Using traditional and experimental papermaking techniques as a foundation, the class will discuss the relationship between nostalgia and contemporary craft. Students will become comfortable with all aspects of the paper studio, from processing fiber to pulling and drying Western formation sheets, specifically gaining skills with tools like the Reina beater, hydraulic press and vacuum table. This class is open to all skill levels.

You're Invited! The KCAI Crossroads Gallery: Center for Contemporary Practice in partnership with the college’s Current Perspectives Lecture Series is pleased to present Nor Boat Nor Fish No River/By the Missouri. The installation is the outcome of a detailed workshop led by artist, Winifred Lutz. The content and forms presented come from Lutz’s interest and research about the Missouri River system, its history, and ecology. Her engagement with KCAI Fiber and Painting courses resulted in the fabrication of dozens of forms included in this site-specific gallery installation. The small gallery presents a curated selection of process samples, methodologies, and prototypes related to her papermaking practice and this project. This project was initiated by KCAI faculty members Marie Bannerot McInerney and Corey Antis.

Widely known for her site-integrated installation sculpture, Winifred Lutz has created major installations and permanent public works in the United States and Europe. Her outdoor installations are known for their remarkable sensitivity to the site, for how they underscore the vegetative and social processes that determine the discrete history of a place. She has traveled to study gardens in Japan, the Sinai Peninsula, and Scotland. Past venues for her installations have included the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, the Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati, and the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art.

Known for the work she has done over the past 35 years, Winifred Lutz is a primary innovator in the field of hand papermaking as an art form. Her travel in Japan and Korea to observe papermaking methods and tools has given her a perspective on the craft that has allowed her to combine European and Asian techniques to create unusual hybrid processes. She has lectured nationally and internationally on her unique paper casting methods. Her scholarly explorations of paper techniques have been widely published. Winifred Lutz’s work is the recipient of many awards, including an NEA Visual Artist Fellowship, the PEW Fellowship in the Arts, a PA Council on the Arts Visual Artist’s Fellowship, and an NYC Creative Time Project Grant. In 2012, she received the International Sculpture Center’s Educator Award. Her work is represented in museum and private collections nationally. She lives and works in Pennsylvania. Formerly Laura H. Carnell Professor of Sculpture at Tyler School of Art of Temple University, she is now Professor Emerita.

Public Program: KCAI Current Perspectives Lecture on Thursday, April 5 at 7 p.m.
{Lecture will be held in Epperson Auditorium on KCAI campus)
Opening Reception: Friday, April 6 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Call for Artists - Morgan Conservatory juried exhibition

The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library announces Erica Spitzer Rasmussen as the winner of the 2018 Minnesota Book Artist Award for her work entitled The Love Affair. Sponsored by Lerner Publishing Group, this annual award is presented as part of the Minnesota Book Awards with the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA), and recognizes a Minnesota book artist or book artist collaborative group for excellence of a new artistic work. Winners also show demonstrated proficiency and quality in the book arts through three pieces of supporting previous work, as well as an ongoing commitment and significant contributions to Minnesota’s book arts community.

The Love Affair is a mixed-media sculptural book handcrafted from pieces of old family letters. Rasmussen was inspired to create the piece when she inherited two handmade wooden boxes filled with love letters exchanged between her maternal grandparents in the 1930s. She delicately cut the letters apart and interspersed them, binding them with a Coptic stitch. To retain the couple’s privacy, Rasmussen cut the pages small enough that significant content couldn’t be read by others. She then placed the book inside one of the wooden boxes crafted by her grandfather, in the twisted form of an infinity symbol, to suggest that the couple might continue their communion from life to death.

Members of the award committee praised the project as “playful, clever, and reverential in its reference to the art of love letters, 17th century fashion, stitching, and symbolism.” Said one judge, “the classical essence in Rasmussen’s piece gives way to an avant-garde play on the notion of a book, with the written letters rendered inaccessible, untouchable and unreadable...and yet, the narrative, the history, and the intimacy are mysteriously palpable.”

Erica Spitzer Rasmussen is an artist who creates handmade paper garments, neckware and small editions of hand-bound books. She received her BFA and MFA at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis), which included coursework in Mexico and Greece. Her current work explores issues of identity and corporeality. Rasmussen is a recipient of an Artist’s Assistance Fellowship (1999) and an Artist’s Initiative Grant (2015) from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Other professional highlights
include a papermaking residency in Vienna, Austria (2010), a solo exhibition in Mexico City, Mexico (2012), and a bookbinding residency in Venice, Italy (2016). Her work has been featured in such publications as FiberArts magazine, Surface Design Journal, American Craft magazine, Hand Papermaking magazine, and the Huffington Post. Rasmussen teaches studio arts as a full professor at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her artwork is exhibited and collected internationally.

A retrospective exhibition celebrating The Love Affair will be on display February 1 – March 13 in the Cowles Literary Commons on the second floor of the Open Book building (1011 Washington Avenue South, Minneapolis). Selects Michael Fallon as New Executive Director

After an extensive national search, Michael Fallon of Minneapolis, Minnesota has been selected as the new executive director of Hand Papermaking, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and advancing traditional and contemporary ideas and practices in the art of hand papermaking. The organization was founded in 1986 by Amanda Degener and Michael Durgin and since 1995 has been under the leadership of Tom Bannister who recently announced his retirement.

“We are excited that Michael Fallon will be leading our organization as our new executive director,” said board chair Susan Mackin Dolan, who headed up the search committee. “With more than 10 years in nonprofit-management experience and an extensive background in arts, writing, and publishing, Michael is uniquely qualified to take over the leadership at this moment in our organization’s 30-plus-year history.”

Artist books, handmade paper, and the stories contained therein have been the through-line to Michael Fallon’s career. After graduating college with degrees in literature and art, Fallon studied with Buzz Spector and eventually earned an MFA degree in book arts at the University of Alabama, studying letterpress printing and papermaking with Steve Miller and publishing a rare edition of Kurt Vonnegut’s work. In 1998 Fallon moved to Minnesota, where he served as an artist in residence at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and befriended renowned book and paper artists Amanda Degener, Bridget O’Malley, Mary Hark, Chip Schilling, Jana Pullman, and many others. Growing interested in writing about art and craft, after publishing his first article in—of all places—Hand Papermaking magazine, Fallon eventually wrote for local and national publications such as Public Art Review, Art in America, and American Craft. In 2005 Fallon went back to school to earn a degree in nonprofit arts management. After more than ten years now of managing arts and educational nonprofits, Fallon has developed strong supervisory, financial, strategic leadership, marketing, and fundraising skills that he will put to use in sustaining Hand Papermaking, Inc. through the next 30 years of its existence.

“What most excites me about coming to work for Hand Papermaking,” Fallon said recently, “is it feels like I’m making a full-circle trip back to my roots—as book artist, papermaker, arts writer, and publisher. I am eager to use the skills and experiences I have picked up along the way in nonprofit management and community organizing to give something back to the organization that played a key role in the early development of my career.”

For over 30 years, Hand Papermaking, Inc. has explored and chronicled the art of making paper by hand—through its biannual magazine, quarterly newsletter, limited-edition portfolios, and online platforms—featuring traditional and modern practices worldwide, curating and presenting the best of the field, inspiring the ongoing revival of the craft, and facilitating the emergence of handmade paper as a vibrant contemporary art medium.
