We had previously announced that Division 1 was full. This unfortunately means that if you have not already applied for your child to take part, it is now too late.

If your child’s application has been successful, you will soon be receiving confirmation. If your child’s application has been unsuccessful, we will soon be returning your check/s.

Thank you all for applying to take part, good luck to those who will be participating, and sorry to those who did not get in this time.

As of this time (Thursday evening), there are still some spaces available for Division 2 (Grades 4-5).

The Friends of the Edison Public Library would like to express our thanks for your support in 2011. You have volunteered, donated books and shopped at our annual book sale in November and volunteered at or attended our first extremely successful spelling bee last April. You have attended our free programs about New Year’s resolutions, handwriting analysis, belly dancing, the art of flamenco, and a book signing with author Lynne Klemens. You have supported our efforts by being valued members of the Friends of the Library. We give you our heartfelt appreciation for your participation in these challenging times.

For 2012 we have already planned programs on decorated silk scarf making led by Nancy Leary (February), rose gardening with Chris Rose (May) and our annual meeting with a presentation by Rick Busciglio (October). Our next spelling bee is Saturday, March 31st, and annual book sale November 3rd and 4th.

Our membership drive also began this month. For those of you who are Friends members, we thank you again for your support. We would appreciate your membership renewal for 2012. For those who are not already members, please consider joining. You can find a membership application form at any Edison Library branch, on the Friends’ pages in every copy of “The Edison Library Letter,” or on the Membership page on our website.

Another way to help us is by volunteering for our spelling bee in March. We have positions available for registration, ticket takers, and classroom pronouncers, scorers and timekeepers. If you can volunteer, please contact our President, Graham Gudgin, by Friday, January 28, 2012 at foledisonnj@gmail.com. The Edison Public Library and the Friends appreciate your assistance.

Despite fears that fewer donations, the poor economy, more people reading e-books, families going away for Fall recess and the lack of coverage by the local press would result in a very disappointing bottom-line, we were heartened by the comparatively good turnout. People seemed to be buying more books at a time too. Having fewer donations meant that we could concentrate on the quality, and give people more room to browse.

Of course, we couldn’t run this sale every year, if it wasn’t for a great team of dedicated volunteers. In alphabetical order, thanks go to the following people for their help with the sale and its preparation:

Mary Assenat, Preethi Balasubramanian, Allison Champer, Lalitha Chittapragada, Carolyn Cullum, Evan Davis, Becky Gudgin, Molly Gudgin, Tookie Harris, Pam Hartkopf, Dixie Hirner, Marylou Kjelle, Lynne Leitner, Dorie Levin, Judy Mansbach, Jeana Mari, Joel Matthew (& Joshua), Chris Rose, Allen Solomon, Martha Stewart, Ed Thomas, Padmini Tirupati and Enid Weiss.

We also are indebted to Advanced Stor-Edge Self Storage on Woodbridge Ave., Edison who donate a climate-controlled storage unit year-round; also to Harris Structural Steel, who donate the use of a truck together with workers to help move the books to and from the North Edison Branch Library.
