Mary, an American social worker, has been working in Romania for over 20 years, caring for children and their families who are HIV/AIDS infected. With little-to-no support from the government, these patients rely entirely on Mary and her staff to provide vital medical care and medications. Here is Mary’s message:

“I just wanted to send a personal ‘thank you’ from this side of the Atlantic. What you gave to us here will make a tremendous difference in what we are able to do to help our young patients. For me, it has been a continual struggle for 20 years now; the sad losses have been heart-breaking, but keeping as many of these kids alive, literally day to day, makes it all worth while. We do whatever we can to help them, but we could not do this if it were not for friends like yourself who help us!”

Through their clean water program, school-age children learn the process of filtering water, while also being educated on hygiene and public health. The children are also taught to garden with their very own vegetable plots. Their harvests are not only enjoyed by the child, but shared with their families and neighbors as well!

The Friends of Children is very proud to support this educational and nutritional program, knowing that it not only makes a difference to these children now, but will have an impact on generations to come.

The funds we raise go entirely to our programs – programs for children’s health, education, and general well-being.  Over the past years, we have been able to assist with the schooling, provide secure housing, and offer nutritious meals and crucial medical attention to thousands of children all around the world.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your faithful generosity.  It is only through you that we are able to offer hope, help and happiness to so many children in need.

Over 130 students participate yearly in therapeutic riding and driving programs designed to improve physical, mental, and emotional health.  Support from Friends of Children has increased the number of students who can receive Occupational Therapy during their lessons, and helped launch the first “Summer Bridges at Little Britches” summer camp for urban youth.

]]> http://thefriendsofchildren.org/healing-through-equine-based-therapy/feed/ 0 Their Family Is Growing http://thefriendsofchildren.org/their-family-is-growing/ http://thefriendsofchildren.org/their-family-is-growing/#respond Sat, 16 Feb 2013 13:49:03 +0000 http://thefriendsofchildren.org/?p=129 In January 2013, five boys were added to the Children of the Light family!  These boys are now in a safe and healthy home along with their 26 “brothers”.  Children of the Light is a refuge for Honduran street boys that not only provides education, shelter and food, but a home life built around the love and comfort of family.

Although this is a joyful time, the need for additional space is even more critical.  With construction on the new dorm 95% complete, Children of the Light is in need of the funds to finish the additional housing so that these boys have the room they need to flourish.

The Friends of Children is accepting designated contributions for Children of the Light and the completion of a home for them.

Please consider sharing your gifts and giving shelter to homeless boys.

Tragically, Phoebe’s mom passed away last year from the same congenital heart problem, and she is now being raised by her aunt. Several Sources continues to help with Phoebe’s medical needs which are not covered by insurance, and has appealed to The Friends of Children for assistance.

We are happy to report that in addition to our annual grant, The Friends of Children is allocating a monthly stipend to help with Phoebe’s medical expenses. We thank our wonderful donors for your continued support which enables us to do such good work for so many children.

]]> http://thefriendsofchildren.org/care-for-baby-phoebe/feed/ 0 Education for Mayan Girls http://thefriendsofchildren.org/education-for-mayan-girls/ http://thefriendsofchildren.org/education-for-mayan-girls/#respond Wed, 16 May 2012 13:52:19 +0000 http://thefriendsofchildren.org/?p=137 Since it was founded in 1992, The Guatemala Tomorrow Fund has provided healthcare and education to thousands of impoverished children and their families in the Mayan communities of Guatemala.  Through their education program, approximately 350 children have graduated high school and have secured jobs – 40% of which are girls.  The Guatemala Tomorrow’s success at educating girls is especially important given that only 10% of indigenous girls in rural Guatemala stay in school through sixth grade. Thanks to your contributions, The Friends of Children supports education for these young women, and is so very proud of their hard work and success.  Your donations make a world of difference to so many!

 

]]> http://thefriendsofchildren.org/education-for-mayan-girls/feed/ 0 Education Offers a Bright Future to Girls in Bangalore http://thefriendsofchildren.org/education-offers-a-bright-future-to-girls-in-bangalore/ http://thefriendsofchildren.org/education-offers-a-bright-future-to-girls-in-bangalore/#respond Fri, 16 Mar 2012 13:53:08 +0000 http://thefriendsofchildren.org/?p=139 The Daughters of Wisdom’s shelter for street girls in Bangalore, India provides a haven for orphaned and abandoned girls who are at risk every day, facing health hazards, child labor, and prostitution on the streets.  The shelter, named “Asha Deep,” means “Light of Hope” and provides girls ages 4-18 with food, clothing, shelter, health and medical care, and education.  Since 2006, The Friends of Children have funded a program in higher education for the older girls at Asha Deep.  The Friends of Children has helped educate over one hundred girls and, by extension, their families who rely on them.  Education for these girls can mean the difference between a life of meaningful work with a living wage and a life of prostitution and/or poverty.
