Grabel's serial works deal with the human dimensions of social, cultural and political issues, such as homelessness, alienation and the image of the aging woman's body. Presents
The 20th ANNIVERSARY EXHIBIT
CELEBRATING OUR LEGACY

January 12 - March 18, 2012

featuring the work of Norman Lewis

As part of a twenty year celebration of New Jersey's oldest African American Fine Arts venue Art In The Atrium, mixed media papermaker Rosalind Nzinga Nichol is showing her first installation work entitled: "Snowflakes" In Celebration of Random Order. The snowflakes range is size from 12" to 6' and are all constructed of poured pulp, through the artist's own unique process. In Rosalind's words:

...I see in snowflakes a reflection of all nature. How, in the midst of chaos and disarray (indiscriminate design) there is unity - a random order. Like the seemingly chance events that lead to me to Kusadasi, Turkey this past summer. Where I was given the wild unraveled silk cocoon threads used to complete these structures, that had been floating in my head for months before hand... Even what happened that day, to make my mother tell me the story of the red boots I had as a child and had long since forgotten... Affirming in me an independence I somehow knew was always there.

This installation is dedicated to my mother Esther Marie, now in the midst of her own personal chaos. ...A woman who never meets a stranger. Always made sure I was surrounded with love -- and ART SUPPLIES! Who allowed me to wear my first pair of red cowgirl boots 'til they literally fell off my feet. A real beauty inside and out, she single handedly strapped on my wings and told me I could FLY! ...Today, I celebrate it all.

Instructed by Julie McLaughlin
Friday, August 19 - Sunday August 21, 2011
10:00am - 4:00pm
 Location: The Morgan Conservatory

(Host Organization for the 2012
Friends of Dard Hunter Conference)

1754 E. 47th Street Cleveland, OH 44103

This 3 day "hands-on, feet-in" workshop takes traditional papermaking techniques to a larger level by creating oversized, thin sheets of paper made from kozo, the inner bark of a paper mulberry tree. When we say big, we mean BIG! It is going to take 4 people working together to pull each large sheet of paper with two people in the vat to disperse the pulp. You will leave the workshop with at least 6... 8'X10' sheets of the kozo paper. As long as the weather is warm and sunny we will be working outdoors and letting the paper dry in the sun. You will learn the entire process from scraping black bark to expose the milky white usable material, to cooking the fiber, hand beating, using the portable Hollander beater, preparing the vat and finally pulling the sheets. In addition you will be pulling smaller sheets of paper using other fibers with a technique which is perfect for elementary school teachers to replicate in their classrooms with little mess or clean up. This will be an action-packed long weekend where you will learn all the basics of papermaking and much, much more.

You can register online at: Morgan Art of Papermaking

or by calling 216-361-9255

Julie McLaughlin was a costume designer for many years before taking a more personal creative journey exploring handmade papers in a sculptural way. Much of her art is based on the corseted silhouette. She maintains a studio in Dysart, Iowa and shows her work both nationally and internationally. Several of her wearable paper garments have been in gallery and runway shows, including the Jeonju Hanji Festival and at the International Costume Culture Conference in Seoul, South Korea. McLaughlin graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in art and has participated in several papermaking and bookbinding residencies / workshops at colleges throughout the Midwest.

The annual Lieberman Lecture commemorates J. Ben Lieberman (1914–1984), founder and first president of the American Printing History Association. The lecture is a moveable feast, given at a different institution each year, by a figure distinguished in the history of printing or the book arts. Past speakers include Betsy Davids, Jack Stauffacher, Johanna Drucker, John Randle, Claire Van Vliet, and Paul Needham.

The 2011 Lieberman Lecture will be given by John Bidwell, Astor Curator of Printed Books and Bindings at the Morgan Library & Museum. The Lecture will be held at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2011, followed by a reception sponsored by the Huntington Library, the Zamorano Club and the Southern California APHA Chapter. John has frequently lectured on paper history topics and has published articles, essays and monographs in this field. His next book will be American Paper Mills, 1690-1832, a co-publication of the University Press of New England and the American Antiquarian Society.

The lecture is free and open to the public. No reservations needed.

The title of his lecture is "Early American Paper Mills: Five Hundred and Still Counting." The lecture will be an account of his attempts to identify and describe paper mills operating in this country between 1690 and 1832. Many of these mills have been unrecorded until now. New information found in archival sources, census returns and newspaper reports makes it possible to follow the fortunes of a rapidly growing trade, an important source of cheap newsprint during the colonial period and a vital component of book publishing projects during the early industrial era. By 1832 Americans could compete against imported goods with wrapping, writing, printing, and specialty papers of their own manufacture, some of them made on the recently invented cylinder and Fourdrinier machines. Technological developments will be noted, the business exploits of prominent papermakers will be mentioned, and the lecture will be illustrated with contemporary views of mills and manufacturing facilities.
Hiebert arranges loosely tied knots on a sheet of translucent handmade paper, manipulating the loops and ends to create the drawing, trapping the threads in time with the addition a top layer of translucent paper.
For those unable to join us at the Annual Meeting of the Friends of Dard Hunter, here are some sights and sounds.

This has been in the works and in my brain for some time, but I think I am ready...and am happy to find a co-writer! Haley Nagy and I are co-writing a book that illuminates and presents contemporary international artists who combine paper and encaustic in innovative and diverse ways. We will be curating from artists who are committed to paper (i.e. not just one or two works) and encaustic and are exploring inspirational ways of integration. You are invited to submit your images of appropriate artwork to be considered for inclusion.

Please send me an initial reply to my email address asap that lets me know of your interest with couple of sentences(informal) that tell me how and why you've been involved with paper and encaustic as well as a website link or photo bucket link...no jpegs now. I'll ask for specific images later. I also welcome personal suggestions of artists whose work with these media you highly respect and you think I should contact.
The softcover, bound book (anticipated publication by late summer ’11) will represent committed artists who employ encaustics with paper in a "gallery" format : collage, sculptural paper either cast or formed or woven, monoprinting on paper, painting on paper (pulp paintings), found papers, artist books, photography... or?. Works that explore the diversity of paper and celebrates the renaissance of two ancient media melding in our contemporary art world...

Personally, as an artist who has embraced paper and encaustic in my own work (works on/of paper since the mid 70s and encaustic since the early 90s) I am so excited and jazzed to discover how other artists have explored these rich media!
Looking forward to hearing from you.
All the best, Catherine Nash

I would like to tell you of a new paper exhibition running until November 14. The exhibit is called It's in the Pulp: The Art of Papermaking in Santa Cruz. It is being held and the Museum of Art and History in Santa Cruz, CA. Both work of FDH members Peter Thomas and John Babcock are featured in this show. Of the six works John Babcock has in the show, two are new this year. "Streamer" is a sculpture piece 40 inches in diameter, comprised of 28 sheets of paper 32 feet long, hanging in the stairway of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. "Mandjet, Vessel for Ra", inspired by Egyptian mythology, is a large work featured in the main gallery and is shown below.

We do hope you get to see the show and this new work as well as the work of many other artists that have been part of the history of papermaking in Santa Cruz for the past 36 years. It is exciting to see all these wonderful paper pieces. There is a link to the Museum of Art and History web site below for more information.
Being the curious type, I wanted desperately to find out what might be shown. And I figured that whatever was on the film was worth preserving. I took it to the photo shop where I had done business (film) for many years and they were kind enough to transfer the film to VHS - oh yeah - cutting edge - that's me.

Little did I know that the advance of technology would be so fast-paced. Last week, I came across the VHS in a box in the archives and figured I needed to get current again. I was able to dust off our old VCR and, after many false starts, bit the bullet and got a machine to convert the tape to 1s and 0s.

So, to make a short story long, I hope you enjoy this film. It's about 10 minutes long. It's a little rough, but heck, it's old. It really is a fascinating look at how rag paper was made in the day at Crane's Bay State Mill. Much has changed in the intervening years, but those of us who know the company well will recognize some machinery that's still being used. In a while, I'll post the rest of the film, which shows paper being made into stationery.
