‘Fringe’ Sells In Off-Network Syndication To Science Channel

A month after securing a 13-episode fifth and final season renewal from Fox, modestly rated sci-fi drama Fringe has been sold in off-network syndication to Discovery Communications’ Science Channel. The pact between Fringe producer/distributor Warner Bros and Science includes a SVOD carveout, allowing Warner Bros to sell the series to a streaming service where serialized dramas do far better than in traditional off-network syndication.

Fringe Scoop: Seth Gabel Not Returning as a Regular For Fifth and Final Season

When Fringe kicks off its fifth and final season this fall, it will be down one castmember.

Sources confirm to TVLine that Seth Gabel will not be back as a series regular.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Fringe‘s leading lady, Anna Torv, noted that the odds of Gabel returning were slim.

Fringe Observiews 4.22 Brave New World Part 2

Welcome to the Observiews for Season 4 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense.

All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong. I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews. I could also have missed a few things, oh well.

2.19 Brown Betty

FICTIONAL WALTER: “[the glass heart] Put simply, it's a power source. But it's capable of many wondrous things.”
ELLA: “So Peter took his special heart, and with all his might, he split it in two. And the heart was so magical that it still worked. And together, they made goodness, and lived happily ever after. The End.”

That’s what I was thinking as I watched it again. 2.19 Brown Betty is full of Easter Eggs. So let’s see if my deciphering makes sense. Walter and Peter represent the two universes, Peter being from the other one, Walter from ours. Olivia is the power source. She was the only one who could collapse the two universes but she’s also the one who could save the two universes alongside Peter. I’ve always said that Peter and Olivia have a special connection and that they have to work together to accomplish “their mission”. And in a sense we got our happy ending too.
Oops, I’m getting ahead of myself. And I will get back to 2.19 Brown Betty later again which is one of my favorite episodes.

I wonder if this is where we start S5 off. From where we ended until 2015 when the Purge happened.

4.19 Letter of Transit

SIMON: “On the TV they're showing footage from... Chicago, L.A... London. Observers going from house to house and... dragging people out into the street.”
ETTA: “That was 2015. The Purge.”

This time I didn’t have any problems finding the Observer. September was throughout the episode.

Shout out to Michael Cerveris. I absolutely love his portrayal of September.

Okay, so let’s dive in.

I guess I’ll say it right at the beginning. This was by far one of the best episodes and by far the best season finale. Fringe is an exceptional gem and it will be hard to top or to even come close to, in my opinion. I’m so glad it’s coming back.

Bell’s paradise!

Nice red, green and blue reflections going there.
WILLIAM BELL: “The Bible tells us God created his universe in seven days. It's taken me considerably longer.”

4.13 A Better Human Being

OWEN FRANK: “The hubris of trying to improve upon God?”
I think that line will always be stuck with me now. As I said before, most of the time, if someone is trying to improve upon God, the outcome is less than desirable.

Thankfully (I guess) Bell isn’t done with his creation and it’s just a hologram.

I was so thinking about the Holodeck from Star Trek.

I’m assuming that’s the device that shows the hologram.

Walter encourages Bell to stop.

WILLIAM BELL: “It's done, Walter. The final piece has been set into motion. I couldn't stop it now if I wanted to. And I don't.”

I knew then that Bell was talking about Olivia. Activating her was the final piece.

I thought of 1.17 Bad Dreams

OLIVIA: “He [Nick] said sometimes what we wake up can't be put back to sleep... I wonder if he was right.”

Back at the lab, Olivia and Peter are looking for Astrid and Walter.

Actually I thought the lab looked eerily empty.

And there is the “hair-chair” from 4.13 A Better Human Being.

Peter finds Walter’s lemon cake.

Looking at the toaster oven more closely the print on the back says: Caution Electric Toy.

Unfortunately Astrid and Walter aren’t there and Olivia only reaches Astrid’s voice mail.
Peter thinks they might have gone for breakfast. And speaking of it Peter says: “I put on a pot of coffee. You want a cup?”

When did you put that pot of coffee on, Peter? Lol

Olivia realizes that Peter needs help.

PETER: “Do you want to talk about it?”
OLIVIA: “Talk about what?”
PETER: “The Jedi Mind Trick you pulled on me back on the roof.”

I was thinking back to 3.01 Olivia

Olivia escaped from Liberty Island and forced Henry to help her. She memorized his “show me”.
OLIVIA: “Remember.”
HENRY HIGGINS: “Yeah, I know. I know. You got my number. Jedi mind trick.”

OLIVIA: “I can only attribute it to Cortexiphan.”

PETER: “But, Liv, suddenly you're able to do things that you were never able to do before. First, you saved Jessica, and now my shoulder.”
OLIVIA: “Look, I don't know how I did it. I just did.”
PETER: “Liv, when Walter gets back, I'd like you to let him run some more tests.”
OLIVIA: “You got it.”

What did she just say? What happened to “I’m fine”. Olivia seems pretty distressed about this whole thing.

Olivia gets a phone call from Jessica. She says she has been followed. Olivia asks her to lock doors and stay where she is. But Jessica is not alone anymore.

I thought it interesting that she didn't turn around. Did she know he was there? Did she know who it was? Was she expecting him?

September was there. Unfortunately he stepped on “Stasis Runes”

Sounds like a trap to me. We’ll get back to that sooner than we want.

There is such a thing as making an Observer somewhat ineffective? Who invented it?

When Olivia and Peter arrive at Jessica’s house, she was gone. They find this “whole in the ground”.

When I saw the whole I had to think of 3.12 Concentrate And Ask Again.

Olivia feels she’s responsible.
PETER: “Liv? You didn't put this woman's life in danger. You're the one that saved her.”

Feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, Olivia? I guess you are becoming like the Olivia from the old timeline.
Kind of how Peter described her in 2.22 Over There Part 2

Peter: "She's a lot like you. Darker in the eyes, maybe. She's always trying to make up for something. Right some imaginary wrong. Haunted I guess."

Olivia gets another phone call. This time it’s Broyles informing her that Astrid was found with a gunshot wound. But no sign of Walter.

I’m so glad she’s going to be fine.

Someone had moved Astrid away from the warehouse, where she and Walter were looking for Bell.
PETER: “And called 9-1-1. Which means they didn't want you dead.”

Awww, Peter, that was so sweet!

She knows who shot her.
ASTRID: “There was a crew of armed men. And they probably took Walter. Peter, I tried to protect him, but I couldn't get him out of there.”

Poor Astrid. It wasn’t your fault. Walter has gotten her in trouble before.
2.09 Snakehead. Walter disappeared in Chinatown and Astrid was followed back to the lab where someone beat her up.

The other incident I thought of was 2.10 Grey Matters.

Thomas Jerome Newton had taken Walter to find out how Walter opened the door to the other side. Astrid had left the house to get him something from the lab. When she came back he was gone.
And!! I remembered that Astrid had a gun before and it was also in 2.10 Grey Matters.

Astrid gives the address of the warehouse and Peter and Olivia go check it out. As they were leaving Astrid warns Olivia.

From how Astrid said that and Olivia’s reaction, it looks pretty serious.

OLIVIA: “But even if Bell is responsible, what does infecting people with nanites and using the sun's light to ignite an oil reserve have to do with collapsing two universes to create a new one? I mean, how are they connected?”

I think they were just the set-up for you, Olivia as you will find out shortly.

Inside the warehouse (which of course was empty) Peter and Olivia find September. And he’s not there on his own volition.

JESSICA HOLT: “Step back from him. Set down your weapon. Slowly.”
OLIVIA: “What are you doing?”
JESSICA HOLT: “I'm sure many things are racing through your mind right now. But none of them are as important as what I’m about to say. If you ever want to see Walter again, put down your gun.”

Peter asks September to do something. Because he is there it must be important. But because he is stuck he can’t help.

JESSICA HOLT: “He [September] can't. The Stasis Runes at his feet keep him stuck right where he is. Unfortunately for you, this was a future you didn't foresee. It seems he's very concerned about the events in your life. And Doctor Bell said that, if we put you in harm's way, he'd appear.”

In the Observiews for 4.08 Back To Where You’ve Never Been I said that Olivia had been observed from the beginning.

A strand in her hair has the word “observed” on it.

OLIVIA: “That day you were infected, that was intentional. You never had a daughter.”

Did I not say last week that was a trap?

JESSICA HOLT: “I hate kids. Now let's see how concerned you are about him.”
As Jessica shoots at September, he is catching the bullets.

Absolutely loved Olivia’s face as September caught the bullets.

Unfortunately.

JESSICA: “They can operate at hyper-attenuated time. To us, it almost looks like magic. It's not, though. It's just tech that essentially lets them move very, very fast. Now this gun is an invention of Doctor Bell's.”

Is it the “76-Pulse” side arm that Fauxlivia was carrying in 2.22 Over There Part 2?

Or is it the “77” that Bell used to blow up the cars at the end of the same episode.

This new model shoots faster and September is not able to catch it.

OLIVIA: “Okay, what are you doing? I mean, what do you want? Please, could you just put the gun down and talk to me?”
JESSICA HOLT: “He feels no emotion. Perhaps no pain. This won't upset him. But it appears to upset you.”
OLIVIA: “Damn it, stop. Just -- just tell me what it is that you want.”

Jessica fires again but Olivia catches the bullets and redistributes them back to their source...

killing Jessica.

Mwahaha, again no one messes with the Dunhamnator!

So how was Olivia faster than the Observer, being able to catch the bullets when he wasn’t?

I have always been amazed at her ability to react really fast. One incident coming to mind is in 1.20 There Is More Than One Of Everything. She just comes around the corner of the van at the end of the episode and turns so fast that it took this guy here completely by surprise.

I don’t have a good screen shot of that but if you watch the episode you’ll know what I mean.

Peter discovers that he can scrape the runes off so September can be released. September is also surprised that they knew of this methodology.

Did Bell invent that? Or is it something the other Observers created?

When Peter asked September if he knows where Walter is, he said “no”.

Hm. That made me think of September’s conversation in 3.10 The Firefly

OBSERVER: “There are things that I know. But there are things that I do not. Various possible futures are happening simultaneously. I can tell you all of them, but I cannot tell you which one of them will come to pass. Because every action causes ripples, consequences both obvious and... unforeseen.”

OLIVIA: “At least now we know how you got shot. I've seen you shot before just like this. You came to me at the Opera House. You said, in every version of the future, I would have to die.”

4.08 Back To Where You’ve Never Been.

THE OBSERVER: “I did not. Or I have not yet. I suspect I understand now. The conversation you are referring to has not yet happened for me. I must investigate the future and find out what I meant. I hope... I get back to you in time.”

So, what, wait? If the Observer had not had this conversation yet, does Olivia have the ability to see the future? Which timeline, future and/or universe did the Observer come from?

I loved Peter’s line when Olivia asked how they can find Walter now because their only lead is dead. Peter said: “That doesn’t mean we can’t still question her.”

It so takes me back to 1.01 The Pilot where Walter was questioning John Scott after he had been dead for a few hours. Peter was so against Walter’s methodologies back then and now he pulled a lot of them himself.

They take Jessica to the lab. She was bleeding red blood.

This makes it hard to figure out whether she was a new shapeshifter or really just a human being because of the stuff that is going to take place in a few minutes here. Or did her body just react to whatever methodology they used to question her.

Since Walter is not there, Olivia has to assist. Peter asks her to give Jessica an injection. Olivia starts at the arm but Peter corrects her. The injection needs to go in the head.
When she finished Peter says: “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”

I was thinking of an interview where Anna says she doesn't like needles. (with permission from the site) I have the absolute highest respect for Anna Torv and because of this appreciate her acting skills even more.

Peter hooks up Jessica and Nina comes to help.
I really like this Nina especially knowing that she seemed to know a lot about Henrietta and helps in 4.19 Letters of Transit.

Nina to Peter: “There'll come a time when I’ll ask you how you knew about this technology.”

Ok, what technology is Nina referring to?

Could it have been the method Jacob Fisher used in 1.05 Power Hungry?

Was it the one from 1.07 In Which We Meet Mr. Jones?

Or 3.04 Do Shapeshifters Dream Of Electric Sheep?

Nina and Olivia are having a conversation on the bench. Olivia is just breaking my heart. She just can’t catch a breath.

OLIVIA: “Well, she [Jessica] took a chance on dying at that office building for whatever her mission is. She was counting on me to save her. They used Jessica to play on my sympathies, and then they used my feelings for Peter, my fear that Jones would kill him.”
NINA: “William always talked a lot about the powers Cortexiphan children might have.”
OLIVIA: “But why is he activating me now? Why is he doing this?”

NINA: “My Dear... you may have a different set of memories now, But, at heart, you're still the same girl I knew. You've always had incredible compassion. It was your capacity for feeling that made William and Walter so sure that you were the perfect candidate for The Trials. And I don't know what it is, but William must want -- no, he needs something from you. Something only you can provide.”
Yeah, can’t wait to find out what that is and Olivia might not have been ready earlier.

I was thinking back to 2.04 Momentum Deferred
WILLIAM BELL: “Yes. In any search for knowledge, there are always unintended consequences -- victims, you might say. But not you. I can see that... just by looking at you. In fact, you're just coming into your ability.”

Back to the ship.
WALTER: “Why, William? Why would you do this? What could you possibly hope to gain by destroying both universes?”

WILLIAM BELL: “Walter, this was all your idea. Peter died twice. You hated God. "What kind of God would cause so much suffering?" That's what you said. So much pain. You decided to create a universe that would operate by your rules. And then, when you realized that you were smart enough to do it, you got scared. You asked me to cut out a portion of your brain.”

Bell says this was Walter’s idea. Somehow I don’t believe that. Walter may be capable of many things but this doesn’t sound like him. [Update: Apparently I’m not the only who thinks that way. I wrote this part of the Observiews way before I saw the Noble Intentions on this episode. Take a watch...]
I also recall a conversation from 3.02 The Box
ASTRID: “This is from Bell? It's a key to a safety deposit box. (she reads the letter. "DON'T BE AFRAID TO CROSS THE LINE.")”
WALTER: “It's an old argument. Belly and I spent days discussing the wisdom of crossing the line. "Only those that risk going too far can possibly know how far they can go." That's what Belly used to say.”
ASTRID: “So you were the cautious one?”

Walter and God
1.01 The Pilot – Walter says that besides his assistants and Bell, God would have access to his work
1.02 The Same Old Story – Walter says it's one of the inherent pitfalls of being a scientist - trying to maintain that distinction... between God's domain and our own.
2.15 Peter – Walter challenges Carla Warren: “There is only room for one god in this lab and it’s not yours.
2.17 White Tulip – Walter: “I’ve asked God for a sign of forgiveness.”
3.20 6:02 AM EST – Walter praying in the chapel.
Those come to mind right now and I’m sure there are more.

At the end of 2.10 Grey Matters we see a flash back to “we don’t know when” where Bell is about to cut out parts of Walter’s brain.

In 2.22 Over There Part 2 Bell says too that Walter asked him to take out his brain.
In 4.19 Letters of Transit Nina seems to confirm that parts of Walter’s brain was cut out by Bell. I don’t know, do you think it really happened that way?

Bell has cancer and slowed it down with Cortexiphan.
The only one without side effects of that drug is Olivia, so I wonder what it will do to him.

Bell: “God made us in his image. If that is so, if we are capable of being gods, then it is our destiny to do so.”

Well I hate to break the news to ya, Bell but that’s what Adam and Eve thought too after they were tricked by the serpent and God kicked them out of Eden. What makes you think God will allow you to be like him? “The hubris of improving upon God”.

WILLIAM BELL: “My dear friend, even if you deny it now, you have always been playing God. I am.”
That’s what God said to Moses as he encountered the burning bush (Exodus 2:13 and 14).

Back in the lab Jessica is ready to be questioned. Jessica is looking Olivia straight in the eyes. Well...

JESSICA HOLT: “What did you do to me?”

Gosh, poor Liv. Seems like everything is her fault.

Jessica’s got some really cool eye-rolling going and she speaks with a different voice.

Awesome effects again!
When asked where Bell is she sings a shanti.
JESSICA HOLT: “Mm-hmm. He's all wet I expect. And a bore. ‘A man must be blind or be out of his mind to go out to sea once more.’”

It’s taking too long. Peter and Olivia are starting to lose their patience. And Olivia is getting angrier.

OLIVIA: “Jessica, how is he going to give birth to a new world if we closed the bridge between the two universes? … How is he going to collapse the two universes?”
JESSICA HOLT: “He needed an energy source.”
OLIVIA: “What energy source?”
You’ll find out in a second.
JESSICA HOLT: “We're all expendable in the wake of creation.”

2.04 Momentum Deferred – Bell: “In any search for knowledge, there are always unintended consequences -- victims, you might say.”

OLIVIA: “Jessica, how is he going to do it?”
JESSICA HOLT: “Noah was a righteous man, and he brought onto The Ark every creature to populate the new world. Two by two.” (Genesis 6)

OLIVIA: “Damn it, Jessica, what energy source?”

Behold the power of the Dunhamnator!

OLIVIA: “The new energy source, it's me. Bell's going to try and use me to collapse the two universes. That's why he's been activating me.”

Nina is checking Olivia with a Gauss meter.

NINA: “The ElectroMagnetic energy you're giving off is extraordinary. But, if William is using the energy you're generating, I believe I may know how to find him.”

I thought back to 1.05 Power Hungry where Walter was using the electromagnetic signature of Joseph Meegar to find him.

At the FBI office Olivia is awaiting her fate?

They traced Bell to a ship – The Talos – but it’s long gone by now. Not sure if this is a correct reference but i thought it interesting.

BROYLES: “Talk to me.”
NINA: “It's not good. Olivia is giving off an exceedingly strong and specific ElectroMagnetic field. Now I know how it sounds, but I believe she was activated to power the universe collapse.”

OLIVIA: “Lucky me.”

I was thinking back to 2.04 Momentum Deferred.

OLIVIA: “Well, 'lucky' isn't the word that I would choose… I've met some of the others. To say that they are permanently damaged would be an understatement.”

Unfortunately Olivia can’t be turned off.

NINA: “But we can use her to find Walter and William Bell. The frequency at which Olivia is resonating will also be the frequency at the epicenter of the dimensional intersection, meaning we should be able to identify the exact location where the two universes are overlapping. Now, assuming Bell wants to survive the collapse, that's where he'll be. The 'calm at the center of the storm' as it were.”

The drawing from 4.20 Worlds Apart came to mind.

And 4.12 Welcome to Westfield
WALTER: “The sum of equal and opposite vectors is -- is zero. Very clever, Peter. We need to find the place where the opposite forces meet and cancel out.”
PETER: “Like the eye of the storm.”
WALTER: “In a hurricane, the center is said to be the safest spot.”
PETER: “And after this thing is said and done, it might be the only place that survives.”

Looks like Olivia needs her own little ‘calm before the storm’.

PETER: “It's gonna be okay.”

OLIVIA: “You know, for the first time, I don't think that it is.”

Wow, I never thought Olivia would ever say that, how sad and hopeless that sounds.

OLIVIA: “I remember being in that lab in Jacksonville when Walter and William were doing the Cortexiphan Trials. I remember how it smelled, how I felt, how scared I was, how all alone I was.”

This is from 1.17 Bad Dreams where Walter finds the tape and watches it.

OLIVIA: “And now, you know, years later, nothing's changed. I'm still that little girl, and William Bell is still doing experiments on me. I'm just still being used.”

PETER: “No. Something has changed. This time, you're not alone.”

I had to think of 2.14 Brown Betty again.

Olivia is singing to Peter: “For once in my life, I have someone who needs me. Someone I've needed so long, for once unafraid I can go where life leads me, and somehow I know I'll be strong. For once in my life, I won't let sorrow hurt me... not like it's hurt me before. For once I have something I know won't desert me. I'm not alone anymore.”

I so loved how Olivia was seeking the embrace, longing for it. And how Peter just accepted it and reciprocated it (ha, a word I learned on Fringe, lol).

Again she’s just got hopelessness written all over. The last time I saw that was in 3.08 Entrada.

And now matter how much I've seen that, every time this scene comes I still think there is no hope.

Back on the ship, Walter is eying the gun in the case.

Walter, what are you going to do?

Bell wants Walter to see what it’s like to ride in the center of the storm, I guess.

Walter just asks how Bell did it.
WILLIAM BELL: “Olivia. You were right, Walter. She truly is a remarkable girl.”

I thought back to 2.22 Over There Part 2
WILLIAM BELL: “We've accomplished a lot together, Walter. But she may be our greatest achievement.”

I was also thinking back to what Walter said in 4.19 Letters Of Transit when Astrid asked him why he left Bell in the Amber.

WALTER: “You remember what he did to Olivia. Even you can't be that compassionate.”
Is this the reason? Using Olivia as the power source to collapse the two universes, or is there something else still coming, in S5? As Olivia said earlier: “I wonder what he has in store for me now [later]?”

The ship has been found.

Uh, I don’t see anything. The pilot, Olivia and Nina can’t see anything either.

PETER: “Are you kidding me? It's right there....Am I losing my mind here?”

Nina explains that the ship has already phased out of sync with this universe and because Peter is from the other side, he’s the only one who can see it.

PETER: “But if it's already crossed over into the other universe, there's no way for us to get to it. Even if we had the time, the bridge is closed.”

OLIVIA: “There is a way. Me.”

NINA: “Yes, Olivia now has as much activated Cortexiphan in her system as the Olivia from the original timeline.”

I was thinking about 4.08 Back To Where You’ve Never Been. Peter needed help to cross over. Olivia had the requisition papers for Walter’s device.
PETER: “Well, what do you even need Walter's device for when you can just cross back and forth anytime by yourself?”

OLIVIA: “When I can what?”

NINA: “Now, if what you both have told me is accurate, Olivia can jump between worlds. You, Peter, you can see it. Olivia, you can reach it. But it will have to be done together.”

There is that special bond I was talking about in the beginning.

OLIVIA: “What if I can't do it?”

NINA: “You have the most extraordinary gifts, but the only one you were denied was knowing it. You've had the power all along.”

The Wizard of Oz is referenced so many times during the series. It is on my summer watch list.

I was also thinking of 3.21 The Last Sam Weiss came to mind. Olivia needed to turn the machine off so Peter could get in it.
OLIVIA: “Walter, what if I can’t do it? What if I can’t turn it off?”

WALTER: “I have known you for a long time, Olivia, and I believe that the drawing was no accident. Whoever did it knew the same as I do. That you don’t fail.”

I thought of 3.15 A Short Story About Love

OLIVIA: “When the day comes... if I don't remember this... I want you to try and build something with me again. Don't give up on me. I love you, Nina.”
NINA: “I love you, Olive.”

I think Nina has done that!

Well, I guess it’s almost time to jump out of the helicopter.
PETER: “You’re ready?”

I was thinking back to 3.21 The Last Sam Weiss just before Olivia went with Peter to turn the machine off.
PETER: “You ready?”

OLIVIA: “No. You?”

PETER: “No. Don’t say I never took you anywhere”

Lol! Now we are ready to jump out of the helicopter, yes?
OLIVIA: “Alright. If you've lost your mind, now would be the time to tell me.”

Off to Oz we go.

Peter seemed surprised that it worked. He produces a gun.

PETER: “It was the pilot's. You can't be the only one who always gets to carry a gun.”

2.03 Fracture

OLIVIA: “Maybe I should wait outside.”
PETER: “Then what would I do? You're the one with a gun.”

2.04 Moementum Deferred

OLIVIA: “Is this your way of trying to ask me if I'm scared?”
PETER: “No, of course not. I mean, I figure if you were scared, you'd tell me, right? Besides, I figure between the two of us, you're the one that carries the gun.”

Peter deduces correctly that this is Bell’s arc.

As Olivia walks down the hall she seems to know where to go. Or is it just me thinking that?

WILLIAM BELL: "I will arise and go, now, and go to Innisfree, and a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made. Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee, and live alone in the bee loud glade." Do you know it, Walter?”

WALTER: “Yeats.”

Walter is getting the gun.
Walter, are you planning on shooting Bell? Yes!
I think he’s lost his mind. The “god complex” is getting to his head.

Olivia and Peter arrive.

WILLIAM BELL: “Well, this is unexpected. You know I was not planning on having any humans. What a troublesome species we can be, after all. I had assumed that Walter and I would die off and my new universe would thrive unencumbered by the savage whims of Mankind.”

4.16 Nothing As It Seems

I’m sorry, Bell. But weren’t these creature humans before? And I hate to tell you again but even after God reigned on earth, corruption and sin was still there because Satan was set free for a short time (Revelation 20:7-8). I really hope you don’t get to finish your utopia.

WILLIAM BELL: “ But I see I was wrong - look at the two of you. Humans abide. They persevere. They survive. You have earned your right in the new order, a final breeding pair. Amongst all others, you will be the new Adam and Eve.”

Love Olivia’s reaction which basically says: “I think not!”

Peter wants Bell to stop this now.

WILLIAM BELL: “Shoot me if you like, young Peter.”

Hm, “young Peter”? Has he met an old Peter before?

I was thinking back to 2.22 Over There Part 2

WILLIAM BELL: “Hello, Peter. I'm William Bell. Haven't seen you in many years. You're holding up better than I would have thought.”
PETER: “What's a little universe hopping between friends?”
WILLIAM BELL: “That's not what I meant.”

In 2.04 Momentum Deferred, Bell says to Olivia: “I’ve seen history repeat itself enough times to know a war is coming, just as we predicted, Walter and I, years ago.”

What if Bell has seen Peter go through this before, activating the machine, changing the future or a time line? What if going into the machine has consequences that we are not aware of yet?

WILLIAM BELL: “I cannot turn it off. There's no escaping the inevitable. The chain reaction has begun. Olivia is a living uncertainty engine. Every breath she takes brings us closer to Nirvana. Every beat of her heart tears the world from its hinges. She is ‘The Redeemer’. Go ahead. I will not be the first God to be martyred for creation.”

I said last last week about the Banner:

-It also says: Light of the world” which in Christianity is Jesus. He is the savior.
So what does this mean (or does it mean anything at all) for the Fringe world. Is Olivia going to save the world? Jesus sacrificed himself so that we (I) could live. Will Olivia face the same fate?-
Well, I guess I was sort of right. She was made the sacrifice without knowing it.

WALTER: “Forgive me.”

Walter is shooting B…

What, wait, what are you doing?

NOooooo!

Walter shot Olivia to stop the collapse of the two universes. And it worked because now the ship is visible to the helicopters.

But at what price.

It seems to be Olivia’s fate to get shot in the head. Walternate shot Olivia in the head as well in 3.22 The Day We Died.

Now, you’re gonna say: “What, she died again?”

Actually no, because this Olivia in 4.22 Brave New World Part 2 is a different one than the one in 3.22 The Day We Died.

I also thought it interesting that in most of the “death experiences” including this current one, Olivia (whatever version of her) had almost the same pose.

2.01 A New Day In The Old Town

and 3.08 Entrada

But not in 3.22 The Day We Died.

It is also interesting that William Bell was in 3 of the 4 season finale episodes. Here in 1.20 There Is More Than One Of Everything

2.22 Over There Part 2

and this current finale.
But again he was absent for the season 3 finale. Is there a pattern? Or am I reading too much into poses and appearances? If I have learned one thing from Fringe though: nothing happens by coincidence.

Okay, back to Bell in the current finale.
Bell seemed surprised by Walter’s action. I was too.
He rings the bell on the counter

and fades away.

And I’m sure he will be back. Where did he go? And what other plans does he have?

I’m so sorry Peter.

PETER: “Don't touch her.”

WALTER: “Peter, this is no time for emotions.(as he gets slapped in the face) Time is of the essence. We have to move rapidly if we're going to save her.”
PETER: “Save her? She's dead.”

2.01 A New Day In The Old Town

WALTER: “Simple. Reductive. Absurd. Life and death, these are relative terms. Contextually defined, dependent on cultural specifics.”
WALTER: (about the surgeon) “He is undoubtedly indulging in primitive diagnostics. Agent Dunham is not dead. She's not dead. She's not dead.”

3.22 The Day We Died

WALTER: “Peter, I was wrong. It's not too late. You can save both worlds. We can do it all over again. This time, you -- you simply need to make a different choice, and should something go wrong, then Olivia will be our fail-safe.”
PETER: “Walter, stop. Olivia is dead.”
WALTER: “But she won't be... Not then.”

WALTER: “You know very well that hasn't always stopped me. “

WALTER: “Her brain is currently saturated with Cortexiphan. The brain tissue is regenerative, so, if I can get the bullet out before the Cortexiphan wears off and the non-regenerative tissue calcifies, I'll be able to save her. It's like my lemon cake.”

This is what I said last week regarding the lemon cake:
“So I’m gonna throw something out here. If Cortexiphan gives the ability to be regenerative, does that mean Olivia could heal herself if she gets hurt.”

As I thought of Olivia having the ability to heal herself as long as she has Cortexiphan in her system, I was thinking back to 3.19 LSD.

In the bowl are pears and the ancient Chinese believed that the pear was a symbol of immortality. (Pear trees live for a long time.) In Chinese the word li means both "pear" and "separation," and for this reason, tradition says that to avoid a separation, friends and lovers should not divide pears between themselves.

This whole thing was hard to watch. Poor ‘Liv.

PETER: “Whoa. Whoa. Stop. What are you doing?”
WALTER: “I need an exit wound. There isn't one.” PETER: “How much time do we have, Walter?”

WALTER: “Not long. Any damage I do should repair itself... if I can get the bullet out. I'm so sorry, Olive.”

Thud!
So is this the bullet that Etta had around her neck in 4.19 Letters Of Transit?

Did Walter put the bullet in his pocket? Is it he who gave it to her?

PETER: “Walter?”

WALTER: “It worked.”

Phew!!

Two Bishops crying over Olivia.

Awww, sniff.

In the meantime, Broyles is in Washington. There is no sign of Bell.

SENATOR VAN HORN: “The committee would like to acknowledge the work you and your team have done in protecting the welfare of the people of this nation and the world. As such, we would like to grant your request for significant funding to upgrade your operational and scientific divisions. And thank you, Phillip, for keeping us all safe at night.”

Wow, that’s cool because the last time Broyles was before the committee wasn’t so nice.

2.01 A New Day In The Old Town

SENATOR: “Unsubstantiated claims of invasion. Reports of technology run amok. The old "X" designation and your fringe investigations have been indulgences in the federal budget for over half a century. Well, the salad days are over, Mister Broyles.”

2.01 A New Day In The Old Town

BROYLES: “Yes, Senator, I have a job. The same job I have had in three administrations and six wars. To defend our national security. And I assure you we are not secure. Yes, sometimes a threat is familiar. But I have come to learn that sometimes it is far worse -- and when it is worse, when the threat is unimaginable, that is when we are at the door. And you should thank God for that.”

And it’s good to see Senator Van Horn again. I’m assuming in this timeline he is not a shapeshifter like he was in 3.04 Do Shapeshifters Dream Of Electric Sheep.

It gets even better.
Broyles was just promoted to General.

I still want to know what happened in the future that made him side with the Observers as we saw in 4.19 Letters of Transit.

Nina is waiting outside.

She was also there in 2.01 A New Day In The Old Town.

After she gave her speech, Nina kissed Broyles which still makes me shutter.

This time it is just a smile as Broyles offered Nina the job of Minister Of Science.

This explains how she got the job as we saw in 4.19 Letters Of Transit.

At the hospital.

WALTER: “You know, Peter, I’ve been thinking. Due to the intense energy utilization, Cortexiphan levels in the body should be almost negligible.”

PETER: “Meaning what, Walter?”
WALTER: “Well, meaning that she won't be able to run around setting things on fire or doing superhuman things.”

Finally a well needed “Walter moment”
WALTER: “Excuse me, Miss. Is that Lemon Jell-o?”

ORDERLY: “These are urine samples.”

WALTER: “Oh, well, in that case, no, thank you. I'm more peckish than thirsty.”
Okay, this will not be on my next party food list, lol.

Walter also says that the treatments left a biological signature in Olivia and that some abilities might emerge again. But for now she seems normal.
Well Etta for sure inherited some abilities. She was able to block her mind from the Observers in 4.19 Letters Of Transit.

Olivia said last week, she just wants that power out. And now it seems to be gone. I wonder if Olivia would expose herself to Cortexiphan again if her and her family and maybe even the world again are in danger.

Loved that Astrid was sharing Red Vines with Walter. He even called her by her real name.

That’s not gonna last very long because after being ambered for 20 years he still called her “Astro” in 4.19 Letters Of Transit.

Peter is anxiously waiting to see Olivia and finally he gets to.
PETER: “I found one. It's perfect. Brookline. Center Hall. Two stories.”

Really Peter? First words? What about: “Are you alright?” Or “I love you.”
Like father, like son, lol. 1.01 The Pilot

WALTER: “I thought you'd be fatter.”
PETER: “You thought I'd be fatter? Excellent, first words. Perfect.”

PETER: “I suppose that he was right. The Observer. That in every version of the future, you had to die. But I never want to lose you again.”

PETER: “What? You're okay, right? I mean, the doctor didn't tell you anything else.”

That was a very serious expression for someone who is going to share some good news. It is good news, right? Why the hesitation?

OLIVIA: “Actually, he did.”
PETER: “What?”
OLIVIA: “Peter, I’m pregnant.”

And thus Henrietta was conceived?

3.10 The Firefly

So is the woman on the left Olivia? And who is the baby that she’s holding? And is the girl to the right Henrietta?

Walter and Astrid are looking on.

That was so cute.

Let’s just savor this moment, shall we!!!!!!

What was too short (in my opinion) in 4.15 A Short Story About Love was perfect here.

Awww!

Sigh, this is Fringe, so don’t get too comfortable with it. Who know what S5 has in store for those two.

Back at the lab, Walter is whistling “Rock a bye Baby” while fixing a peanut butter and raspberry sandwich.

His favorite cup with the kangaroo handle is there as well and the test tubes are pink and blue.

But even for him the tranquility is interrupted by a visitor.
THE OBSERVER: “We have to warn the others. They are coming.”

WALTER: “Who's coming?”

That is good question. Do we have the answer already? Is it “they” that the Observer was talking about in 4.14 The End Of All Things? Is it the Observer as they have taken over the world in 4.19 Letters Of Transit? Or will it be something completely different? I guess we will have to wait and see. And the good news is – we will see.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS

The statue is from 2.04 Momentum Deferred.

One of the commercials was for a Hyundai. It had Neal Huff as the dad. Who is no other than Marshal Bowman from 1.13 The Transformation and 4.16 Nothing As It Seems.

I said it in the beginning and I’ll say it again: This was one of the best episodes of all seasons and for sure the best season finale (in my opinion).
The acting was outstanding. Josh and Anna rocked and John is awesome.

They – cast and crew – deserve a break. Can’t wait to find out where this is going.

In the meantime, keep re-watching episodes, keep recruiting soldiers, keep spreading the word, and keep supporting this awesome, amazing show.

Fringe Review: Brave New World, Part II

Fringe finales are usually remarkable works of art: emotionally affecting, scientifically (and delightfully) improbable, mythologically fascinating. This finale was not remarkable, merely good. It is more interesting to wonder what will happen next than to consider what has just happened.

The plan to collapse two universes in order to create a third—the plan we had briefly attributed to Jones, but now know is Bell’s—requires a massive energy source: Olivia. Her increased superpowers are the result of being dosed with more Cortexiphan and jump-started by recent events. The power that has always lurked within her (as Nina cheesily informed us) can be used against her, and against the world.

The plan still seems rather silly to me, which may be part of why I was underwhelmed by this episode. Of course, I am neither a megalomaniac nor a comic-book fan, so universe destruction! doesn’t do much for me. Bell’s desire to become a god was fascinating, frightening, and then over.

The necessity of sacrificing Olivia seemed obvious, as did the importance of the regenerative properties of Cortexiphan. We finally know what September meant when he said Olivia must die, and we finally know the identity of Mr. X from “Lysergic Acid Diethylamide”: Walter himself. Problem solved.

In fact, “problem solved” is the theme of this episode, which saved Astrid, gave Walter a chance to save the world and Olivia, allowed Peter and Olivia to work effectively as a team and find out they’d created a baby, and lead to that greatest of all possible unlikely events: increased funding during a recession.

That would have made for a horribly unsatisfying series finale, because everything feels too neat and tidy. As a stepping stone to the final season, this feels like the calm before the storm, the Whedonesque moment of happiness before great tragedy. The future we saw in “Letters of Transit” has now become the future, if I’m reading September’s final declaration correctly: the evil Observers are coming.

I am extremely curious about how Fringe will make that work, as we have seen the future but our heroes have not. How will they know what to fight? How will they be able to understand September’s predictions? And how will they (and we) know if they are successful or not? I think the freedom of knowing that the series must end will give the showrunners some freedom, and I hope they’ll do something insane. Like set the last 13 episodes in the future. Or do a flash-forward/flash-back structure with a constantly-altering future. I also hope Seth Gabel returns, and the we find out what series of events led to William Bell being ambered with our heroes, except Olivia.

The Eye of the Storm:

• The glyphs were interesting and cool.

• Please, please, please tell me that Rebecca Mader’s eyes were CGI during the brain-interrogation scene. No one should be able to do that. And was anyone else reminded of a similar scene in Lost?

• William Bell’s “I am” was very Yahweh. He loves those cryptic declarations of Being. And Olivia's resurrection has some sort of biblical parallel, but I just can't put my finger on it.

Three out of four Noahs.

The last time we've seen a coffee shop like this was in 3.08 Entrada when Fauxlivia had her last real coffee before she crossed back over to her side.

I wonder what she’s doing now.

To me this is a scary thought. Everything is done from your mobile device.

You scan it in and your bill is paid. It sort of feels like: “Big Brother is watching you”. And I don’t want fussing over product placement. It still pays the bill and I for one don’t mind.

Unfortunately Neil doesn’t have time to enjoy his coffee.

He sort of self-combusts although not like Susan Pratt in 1.19 The Road Not Taken.

She completely went up in flames. And Neil is not the only one as we will find out in a bit.

INFESTED WOMAN: “Don't move. I think when they move, they die. Nobody move!”

Finally! My P/O shipper’s heart jumped to the moon.

Peter is reading off the Realtor’s page.

Last time someone else was reading the paper. You know I had to bring it up, lol.

In 3.06 6599 kHz Peter brought Fauxlivia breakfast in bed. Olivia’s bed. Grrr.
Ever since then I was waiting for something similar.
We did get a bit in 3.20 6:02 AM EST but that wasn’t enough for me.

Yes, I know. Peter wasn’t there in this new timeline so those two cases didn’t happen this way but humor me, lol.

PETER: “Medford?”
OLIVIA: “No.”
PETER: “Holliston?”
OLIVIA: “Uh, only if I am being punished.”
PETER: “Wayburn?” (that seems to be a road reference only)
OLIVIA: “Only if I'm dead.”
I wish I knew why Olivia’s associates those two places with being punished and dead. And I thought too, as she said that: “don’t say that, argh”.

PETER: “Alright. How about Lexington? Three beds, central heat and air, dog run. Did you know that I had a Lab when I was growing up?”

1.02 The Ghost Network.

WALTER: “How was the old house? How is Rufus?”
I wonder if he was a Lab. Apparently Peter also loved a cocker-spaniel named Yatsko (3.09 Marionette)

OLIVIA: “No, I thought you were allergic.”
PETER: “I was, but Walter made him non-allergenic. (leave it to Walter and his passion for experiments, lol) It's got a working fireplace in the bedroom.”
OLIVIA: “Nursery?” (SHE SAID FIRST)
PETER: “Nursery?”

OLIVIA: “Nursery.”

Absolutely loved the expressions on their faces.
Does Olivia already know she’s pregnant or is it a guess because later she’s got a glass of wine on the table although it looks like she hadn’t touch it compared to Peter’s glass, or is it wishful thinking for the future?

But of course in typical Fringe manner – the phones are ringing and bliss is over for a bit.

I thought it was cute how they checked each other’s phones.

I was reminded back again to 3.20 6:02 AM EST where the moment of bliss was also interrupted.

And that blanket still looks uncomfortable and scratchy.

The phone call is about the case and Walter and Astrid are already at the crime scene.

ASTRID: “Walter. You are going to freeze, gawd!”
WALTER: “Why must you always mother hen me? I'm quite capable of looking after myself.”
(Really, Walter?)
ASTRID: “I know, but just humor me. Maybe I like doing it.”

Yep. That’s what Astrid in the old timeline did. Taking care of Walter. Although I think sometimes she didn’t want to.

I just had to put this in here.

He looks so scared and scary at the same time. Fringe is awesome. Even the extras are amazing.

Walter thinks that the deaths are associated with this mobile transaction. But Astrid assures him that this is just how people pay for things now.

Shush everyone. It’s ok. As I said earlier, it pays the bills or we wouldn’t have any Fringe.

WALTER: “Huh. What will they think of next?”
That is a good question.

BROYLES: “All we know so far, at 3:23pm more than two dozen people experienced some kind of spontaneous human combustion.” There is that 23 again.

PETER: “You know that's a myth, right?”

1.19 The Road Not Taken came to mind again.

WALTER: “Well, from what Agent Francis described, it's possible we're dealing with a case of spontaneous human combustion.”
PETER: “Thought that was just a myth.”
WALTER: “Oh, myth is just an unverified fact.”

Walter is inspecting one of the victims.

Gruesome! I’m always amazed at the visual and special effects they come up with.

WALTER: “Okay, my friend. Let's see what secrets you hold.”

1.19 The Road Not Taken

WALTER: “I was afraid that someone would unlock all my secrets. I didn't realize that someone would be me.”

WALTER: “Hmm. I -- I had a watch similar to this once. My uncle gave it to me. Uncle Heinrich.”
2.03 Fracture
WALTER: “The same principle applied to proximity fuses and World War Two aerial bombs, in fact, my Uncle Henry was killed by one in the 'Battle of Guadalcanal'.”

Just in case you didn’t know, Henry is the English translation for Heinrich.

WALTER: “He loved rhubarb.”

And so do you, I guess because that’s what got you, Peter and Olivia in trouble in 4.12 Welcome To Westfield.

JESSICA HOLT: “...am i gonna die?”
WALTER: “I -- I can't answer that. Not yet.”
JESSICA HOLT: “What are you?”

WALTER: “What am -- I'm human. What are you? Is this some sort of alien invasion? Are you part of a strike f...”

Walter, have you been watching too much Star Trek?

Anyway, Jessica is one of the victims but she is still alive and allows Walter to test her blood. Astrid analyzes her blood and they find an abnormally.

WALTER: “What sort of virus are you? If you were aereolized, you would have infected everyone, not just those on the escalator. If you were harbored on a water tap or a doorknob, the first few contacts would have wiped you clean. What would have kept you fresh and so infectious, my lethal friend?”

2.12 What Lies Below popped into my head when I saw this scene.

I thought of how Walter was trying to figure out how the virus worked.

Anyway, they discover that it’s not a virus at all but Nanites. Someone planted that device there and people’s movements activate them.

No. 26 – does that mean anything?

Jessica agrees to be experimented on and they get her safely to the lab. Walter is working on an antidote to destroy the Nanites.
Olivia tries to make it as comfortable as possible for her. Jessica asks for her phone and calls her ex to pick up her daughter.

Am I the only one who thinks that this was/is a set-up for Olivia?

Anyway, after the phone call Jessica’s temperature begins to rise and Walter might not be ready in time with the antidote. Jessica needs to stay calm.

OLIVIA: “Jessica? Jessica, I just want you to focus on me, okay? ... Focus on your breathing.”

1.19 The Road Not Taken

OLIVIA: “You're gonna be okay. Just calm down. Just calm down… You can control this and I'm gonna help you. I just need you to focus the heat away from us… Just focus. Focus on anything. Just focus, Nancy. You can do this, Nancy.”

It’s not working. Jessica’s temperature keeps rising.

So then Olivia takes charges and absorbs the heat herself.

I’m assuming because she’s got Cortexiphan (and I don’t mean just the resent dosing) in her system and she’s “always been the strong one” she can defuse situations like this without harming herself.
Go Dunhamnator!

OLIVIA: “Walter, do you have any idea what just happened to me?”

WALTER: “I could make an educated guess. Cortexiphan has given you certain kinetic powers. Moving molecules so quickly that you can create spontaneous combustion, yes? Well, perhaps in this case, you slowed the molecules down, causing her to cool down.” Didn't I just say that? Or at least sort of.
OLIVIA: “But how did I do it?”
WALTER: “I'm afraid I have no idea.”

Olivia escorts Jessica to the car.

I thought it was interesting that Olivia is all bundled up and Jessica just wears a light jacket, hm.

The Banner.

I've always known this as “pax” but it’s also referred to as “chi rho”.
It also says: Light of the world” which in Christianity is Jesus. He is the savior.
So what does this mean (or does it mean anything at all) for the Fringe world. Is Olivia going to save the world? Jesus sacrificed himself so that we (I) could live. Will Olivia face the same fate?

Olivia gives Jessica her card in case she has other symptoms. Again, Olivia be careful, I smell a rat.
Anyway, Olivia gets called to the office. They found out who is behind the incident.

I thought it was cool, that the date on the footage actually said May 4, 2012 which was the day the episode aired.

Back at the lab, Walter does his own investigation. The Nanites have the signature of the designer on them.

Oh, oh. We've seen this symbol before. 3.19 LSD

Mr. X who Olivia thinks is going to kill her.
According to William Bell it could be someone from Olivia’s past. But she didn’t recognize him.

WALTER: “A hundred different ways to design a Nanite, and he chose this. It's inconceivable. Not by chance. Jones isn't smart enough, not by himself.”

I said last week: “Maybe he is just the one carrying out the plan, devised by someone else”.

ASTRID: “Wait, what are you saying?”
WALTER: “Jones didn't create these Nanites. They're not his design! There's only one person who would construct this particular pattern.”
ASTRID: “Who?”

Patience, we shall find out soon!

DAVID JONES: “I have bad news, sir. Agent Dunham has stopped us again.”

WILLIAM BELL: “Don't be so sure.”

What the heck? Where did he come from? I knew Bell couldn’t be trusted way from the beginning.
And I hate to break it to you, Mr. Bell. I think you are underestimating Olivia, just like everyone else, you’ll see!

Then we have a chess board again.

DAVID JONES: “Olivia beat us today. Clearly, you don't seem concerned.”
WILLIAM BELL: “Don't confuse a winning move with a winning game.”
DAVID JONES: “This board never changes. How long do you take between moves?”
WILLIAM BELL: “Since the last move... about 20 years. In this game, the skill one must have above all else is patience. The board changes, but very slowly. The art of chess -- the art -- is knowing when a piece is most valuable, and then, in that very moment, being willing to sacrifice it. For in the vacuum created by the loss of what is most precious, opportunity abounds, influence is maximized, and desire becomes destiny. For example, on this board, the most valuable piece is the Bishop, Therefore, for the game to be won...”

I absolutely loved this analogy/explanation. And as I said before I want to figure out who the players are on the Fringe chess board and I thought I was making progress. But then as I later find out I’m all wrong and have to start over, sigh!

DAVID JONES: “The Bishop must be sacrificed. I'll attend to it.”

Oh, that doesn’t sound good. And Jones is jumping to conclusions.

WILLIAM BELL: “Promptly.”

I wonder if Bell knew that the Bishop in this case would be Jones, if Bell set up Jones, to be just another Pawn in this game, just like Alt-Nina and Alt-Broyles (4.18 The Consultant).

So Walter and Olivia go and see Nina.

The machine is off in the back and everything is boxed up, how sad.

WALTER: “He's alive. I'm telling you, he's alive I knew that Jones's plan was too ingenious, too remarkable, that it had to have come from Belly. He's alive, Nina. The 'nanotech' that Jones used on the escalator, I've examined them. They were built by Belly. I -- I'd recognize his work anywhere. His methodology was all ov... Nina! It was the work of a master, not an imposter! I know the difference.”

Bell apparently died in a car accident on New Year’s Day seven years ago, but not according to Nina. It was Christmas.

WALTER: “I -- I always thought that he died on New Year, because he came to visit me the night before to say goodbye.”
OLIVIA: “Walter, what are you talking about?”

WALTER: “When I was in Saint Claire's, Belly came to visit me. It was New Year's Eve, 2005. They gave me additional shocks that day just to celebrate, so I can't remember what he said. Nina, I know you loved him.”

NINA: “Oh, Walter, just stop it! The car crash wasn't an accident. William had Lymphoma. He'd been trying to fight it, but... I think he didn't want me to see him that way anymore. He didn't want to be vulnerable. He wanted to go out on his own terms, and he did.”

I thought of 3.19 LSD

WALTER: “When we would do experiments, he would use that [the dog wouldn't hunt] expression when he knew something wouldn't work.”
ASTRID: “But he suggested the computer. It was his idea.”
WALTER: “Exactly. He knew he wasn't coming out. And he hates good-byes.”

WALTER: “It's still possible”
NINA: “Oh, Walter, anything is possible, but the man I knew wouldn't try to destroy a universe. That doesn't sound like William.”

Well that depends on which William you’re talking about.

4.05 Novation

MALCOLM TRUSS: “I never thought I'd say this, but... I wish William Bell were alive... just so he could see you. (talking to the shapeshifter) I truly believed that the work that we were doing was going to change the world. And just like that... Bell shut down the project. And all he could say was, "Some things are not ours to tamper with. Some things... are God's."

This was said in this timeline. Is this not correct anymore? Or is this Bell from the alternate universe who in the old timeline died young in a car accident (2.22 Over There Part 2, Bell explaining to Walter) but in this timeline just faked his death.

Walter wants to prove that he was right about which day Bell came to visit him in St. Claire’s so that where Walter is heading. He stops in his old cell.

1.01 The Pilot

That’s where it all began. And what a ride we’ve had.
Who wrote this formula on the table and what is it for?

As Walter leaves the cell an orderly talks to him and Walter gets scared.

He goes right back to holding his hand we've seen many times from the beginning. Our old Walter is still there.

And I’m sure you all knew that this is actually John Noble’s daughter, Samantha who portrayed Dr. Benlo, the new administrator at St. Claire’s.

OLIVIA: “Walter, you said you had been having a lot of shock therapy. Do you think perhaps he could have been a hallucination?”
WALTER: “No. No. My hallucinations were rarely biped and never men.”

Do I really want to know, lol? And I wish I could do sound because John Noble was just awesome during this.

Walter is sniffing and licking the pages of the visitor’s log from 2005.

When Walter sniffed and licked I thought back to 1.10 Safe

OLIVIA to Charlie: “Just show him the other batch, and be patient with him. His mind works in a different way.”

It sure does.

On the way out.
WALTER: “I must say, you're much prettier than your predecessor.”

That would have been Dr. Sumner I presume. This one is from 1.08 The Equation.

Peter and Olivia are cooking and she’s mincing garlic I think. Too bad they never got to eat. She cuts herself in the finger

and Peter is all cute.

Awww!

OLIVIA: “I was thinking about that girl, Jessica. Oh, one encounter with us and her child almost becomes an orphan. And we deal with this every day. We're playing the odds, Peter. I mean, what do you really think our chances are of having a normal life?”

3.22 The Day We Died came to mind.

OLIVIA: “I can't say that I don't think about it [having a child]. And that I don't wish things were different.”
PETER: “Honey, people still have families. Look at Amanda. She was born into this world, and she's still happy. And the world could get better. So I still think we're gonna have a kid.”

PETER: “Olivia, I know you're scared about what happened in the lab yesterday.”

OLIVIA: “I don't know what's happening to me. What I'm becoming. I've got this -- this power inside me that terrifies me because I don't understand it, and I just -- I just want it out.”
Boy, Olivia seems quite agitated about this.
The last time she wanted something out of her was John Scott’s memories in 1.09 The Dreamscape.

OLIVIA: “I need to get it out. I can't keep having John's life flash in front of my eyes every few days. There must be something you can do.”

PETER: “Okay. So we'll figure it out. Together.”
OLIVIA: “Is that a personal guarantee?”

Awww!

PETER: “After all we've been through, I will not lose you again, Olivia.”

I hope you’re right.

PETER: “I'm starving. What's a guy got to do to get a good home-cooked meal around here?”

Awww!
This scene too was medicine for my P/O shipper’s heart.

I was also thinking back to 3.03 The Plateau when Frank was cooking for (our) Olivia.

OLIVIA: “Can we eat?”

And yet again, bliss gets interrupted.

A beam is coming from the sky going right through a building.

Olivia and Peter are on their way there.

Nice green and red action going.

WALTER: “Jones must be reflecting the light off of something, like one of those disco balls, and then focusing it, like we do with a magnifying glass.”
OLIVIA: “And why is he doing it? Seems like he's trying to burn a hole to China.”
WALTER: “It's a myth. Technically, it would be India, but I doubt it.”

1.04 The Arrival

WALTER: “Many years ago, I worked on 'Project Thor'. The Department of Defense wanted a subterranean torpedo, a missile which could, in theory, be shot from anywhere in the world through the earth's core and hit its target on the other side.”
PETER: “I know for a fact that that is ridiculous.”

Walter wants geological data from Beacon Hill. He remembered reading about an oil find in that area and asks Peter and Olivia to basically evacuate all of Boston because the beam could set Boston on fire from below.

Beacon Hill:
1.15 Inner Child – the meat packing plant was in Beacon Hill
2.09 Snakehead – Matt and his mom lived in Beacon Hill
2.18 The Man From The Other Side – Mr. Verona lived in Beacon Hill
4.07 Wallflower – Jack the first victim, lived in Beacon Hill
4.16 Nothing As It Seems – the LPD Institute was in Beacon Hill

The other thing that came to mind when Walter was talking about Boston being on fire was 1.19 The Road Not Taken again, one of Olivia’s visions.

This was presumably the alternate universe but it would also fit with “the future”. There is writing on the wall saying: He is here and that fits with Bell being in Boston right now as well.

Astrid discovers two radio frequencies and Walter does some math. He then sends Peter and Olivia to the edge of Chinatown were the signal is being sent from.
Walter is also cooking up something.

ASTRID: “Walter, if you were hungry, I could've gotten you something.”
WALTER: “This is not about food, Athos, this is about Bell. Where's the knife? Please, quickly?”

Meanwhile Peter and Olivia arrive where the antennas are but in order to shut them off they have to split up.

Uh, not a good idea. Especially seeing that Jones is already waiting for them there.

Back in the lab, Walter is taking the lemon cake apart.
ASTRID: “Oh, my God, that smells terrible. What is it?”
WALTER: “Lemon cake, laced with pig brain.”

ASTRID: “What?”
WALTER: “Hmm? Lemon cake is the perfect incubator. And I thought it was easier to get pig brain on short notice than a human specimen.’

I was thinking back to 1.15 Unleashed where Peter almost ate an omelet with an ear growing in it.

Walter had baked one of the pages from the visitor’s log because he thinks Bell left his finger prints on them.

WALTER: “I know none of you believe me, which is why I have conducted this little experiment. The pig brain is activating a little-known side effect of Cortexiphan, which is temporary tissue regeneration. Heated between ninety and one hundred degrees, the Cortexiphan I have added to the pig brain should cause at least partial regeneration of all biological matter on the sheet of paper, and voila, fingerprints! Although... identifying Belly's prints from these smudges may prove impossible, after all.”

After some more sniffing and licking Walter finds Almond Oil which Bell was obsessed about.
As Astrid looks on, the lemon cake is regeneration itself because of the Cortexiphan that was added.

So I’m gonna throw something out here. If Cortexiphan gives the ability to be regenerative, does that mean Olivia could heal herself if she gets hurt.
I was thinking back to 2.01 A New Day In The Old Town.

Olivia was clinically dead. I always thought it was because of Peter that she woke up. But what if it was this little known side effect of Cortexiphan that brought her back to life.

So now that Walter knows for sure Belly came to visit him in St. Claire’s he going off to find him.

WALTER: “I'm going to find Belly. A-1 Imports, down by the Seaport… I know this is a 'wild goose chase', a fool's errand, and I'm a fool, but no one is asking you to join me, Alex. It's my hunch, and I'm quite capable of pursuing it on my own, so peace out. I don't...”
ASTRID: “...drive. Alex?”
WALTER: “I was on a roll.”
ASTRID: “Mm-hmm.”

“a fool’s errand, and I’m a fool” – these are some reference I found:
A book called “A fool’s errand, by one of the fools”. If you take a "look inside" and scroll down a bit it talks about Noah being one of the earliest of the fools but was vindicated. I thought it interesting since references to Noah’s ark have been made.

Another reference is this: A snipe hunt, a form of wild-goose chase that is also known as a fool's errand.
Walter starts off with “a wild goose chase”.

And then there is this: a 1987 computer game
The first chapter is titled “The Sun”
There was talk earlier about the sun.
OLIVIA: “We're just passing Kenmore Square. Now, what do you mean, it's the Sun?”
WALTER: “Well, even though we can't see it, it's still there in the sky. Jones must be reflecting the light off of something, like one of those disco balls, and then focusing it, like we do with a magnifying glass.”

Why Walter called Astrid “Alex” and what he meant by “peace out”, that went over my head and I have no idea what he is referring to. Any ideas?

Anyway, as Walter and Astrid take off, Peter and Olivia are on the roofs and need to disable the signal.
PETER: “Now find the dial... marked 'transmission amplitude'. That's the one that needs to be tuned all the way down.”
OLIVIA: “Okay, got it.”

PETER: “But not yet! Not--not--not yet. Sorry. We have to do it together. If we don't, the beam could go off-kilter, cut a swath across Boston. It'd be sort of like don't cross the streams, just, you know, in reverse.”
OLIVIA: “You know I have no idea what you're talking about.”
PETER: “Yes, I know.”

That’s ok, Olivia. It took me a while too to figure out what Peter was talking about. “Don’t cross the streams” is from Ghostbusters.
It’s cool because in 1.19 The Road Not Taken a reference to the movie was made as well.

PETER: “If there's something strange in your neighborhood...”
WALTER: “...who you gotta call?”

Anyway, Olivia and Peter disable the signal.
But Peter has company. And it’s not the friendly kind.

And Olivia can’t help Peter because she’s still on the other roof.

She also gets company. Two very unfriendly security guards ask Olivia to drop her gun.

As she does, so are they.

Kind of goes back to 2.07 Of Human Action which was about mind control.

And we know from 3.22 The Day We Died where Olivia had learned to control her power of moving objects.

I don’t know if she knew she could do that but it certainly gave her the idea to fight Peter’s fight.

As Peter fights with Jones, Olivia takes control over Peter and fights for him, in a sense.

I hate to tell you Jones, but you have no chance against a Bishop and a Dunham.

And so Jones meets his demise… again.

DAVID JONES: “I got it wrong. I was the sacrifice. I was the Bishop. Ugh.”

As I said earlier I wonder if he was a “pawn”.
The way he died reminded me of 1.20 There Is More Than One Of Everything.

It kind of also reminded me of 2.06 Earthling.

In the meantime Walter and Astrid arrive at the seaport. The gruesome “Noah’s ark” is anchored there.

It also says “Eden” on the building.

Astrid thinks they can’t get in but the door to the company building is unlocked.
WALTER: “Ye of little faith.”

That reminded me of 1.02 The Same Old Story

ASTRID: “Are we really going to be able to see her last image?”
WALTER: “Faith. Never a bad thing to have.”

As Walter and Astrid enter the building they come across this gentleman.

Oh that can’t be good. He’s the guy from the ship in 4.16 Nothing As It Seems.

Astrid notices that he has a gun and that they should leave. Walter hears a noise. They hear the creatures Jones created.

But of course where there is one bad guy there are usually more.

Finally some KickAss-Astrid Action. You go girl.

She grabs Walter and they chase through the containers. She even has a gun!

But one of guys shoots Astrid.

This was definitely a shock and big surprise. Did not see that coming at all.

I don’t know what to say. Is she going to be ok?

Walter, why did you have to go in and see what made the noise? This is the second time Walter go Astrid in trouble.
Last time was in 2.09 Snakehead as she was followed back to the lab and she got beaten up.
I know this case didn’t happen either but that’s what I thought off.

Then Bell shows up and says to Walter: “Hello old friend.”

Really, is this an appropriate welcome committee for an old friend? Bell, you better do something and help Astrid.

Wow, that was an amazing episode with so many turns and twists. And this was only part one.
What will we find out in the finale? What are Bell’s plans? What about Astrid? What about Olivia’s powers? Will the world still collapse?
And I guess the big question at least for me: What will the cliffhanger be?

And I’m so glad this will only be the season end.

'Fringe' Star Tackles The Tonys!

With his piercing eyes and insanely powerful presence, it's hard to imagine Michael Cerveris blending into the background -- but that's exactly what his biggest TV gig to date required him to do after Michael was cast as Fringe's mysterious Observer in the pilot episode.

Spotting him became an exciting small screen game of Where's Waldo, but that paled in comparison to the enervating effect Michael had on the show when his Observer, named September, stepped out of the shadows. Since The Arrival, a season one episode that delved deeper into Observer mythology, Michael has become a fan favorite -- and clearly a favorite with the writers as well since September has proven himself to be invincible! I caught up with Cerveris to find out how September plays into the Fringe season finale, why this has been such an exciting ride and what a fifth Tony nomination (for Best Actor in a Musical for Evita) means to him!

Insider.com: When you first signed on to Fringe, did you have any idea The Observers would become such important players?
Michael Cerveris: No. Not at all. When I first auditioned I was under the impression that this was a one episode guest star thing – and that's what they told me. Pretty quickly afterwards I got a call saying they had this idea to put me into every episode of the first season – I would just be in the background and they would reveal me around episode 13. I thought that was so cool. Then somebody at the network decided they liked the character so much they moved the reveal up to the fourth episode.

Insider: At that point, how much did they tell you?
Michael: I had a conversation with Jeff Pinker who said that this character is going to have crucial parts to play in the meta-story of the whole show. So as long as Fringe is on, I was told I'd be part of it – at the time, who knew what that meant! [laughs] It's worked out better than any of us could have dreamed. It's so fantastic to be part of a show that is so over-achieving in all the best ways.

Insider: It's true. And unlike so many other shows that promise big things, Fringe is actually able to accomplish the daring things it sets out to.
Michael: Yeah. That's true. And so few do it with as much heart. As complex as the storylines are and the science behind it all, Fringe is also a story about really beautiful human relationships. A lot of that has to do with the cast too because they're all such incredible actors.

Insider: I was thrilled when last week's promo revealed September would be back in the finale. What can you tease about the episode?
Michael: Yes! I was relieved to hear they'd let that much slip so I can confess to having been there. He does show up in Friday's episode with some key bits of the puzzle to explain. But even he is caught off guard by some things that happen in the episode, which is nice because he's normally a few universes ahead of everyone else. Some things happen that surprise even September – and will surprise the viewers for sure!

Twilight Of The Gods, Emerald Cities, and Other Stray Thoughts From The End Of The World

Yeah, it’s getting close, isn’t it? Apocalypse and all that. Fingers crossed.

William Bell’s endgame now appears to be showing itself as an elaborate scheme to activate the latent powers of Olivia Dunham. Could it be that Bell never had the ability required to put his plan into action and that Olivia is the necessary power source needed to change the face of the world? And does Bell even completely understand the extent of her powers? And why does the nanotech (foreshadowed in Nina's speech in Subject 9) bear the X we've been waiting to see reappear?

Oh, a week from now we're be nodding our heads and saying, "Well, sure, of course, that was obvious the whole time..." But that's not now. So in the meantime...

There’s been a big question revolving around Letters of Transit that many viewers have asked about and I have a small theory about it. See what you think and see if you think it has any far-reaching consequences for what’s currently happening now on FRINGE.

The complaint is this: Hey! What happened to those nice Observers? Making them arrogant and warlike is a real about-face and makes no sense for the characters and I, for one, think this was a real continuity slip! I wish I could give those dull-witted writers a piece of my brain, er, mind! Making these bald-headed, hot sauce loving time travelers into 27th century warlords is, um, very unrealistic!

Point taken.

But it did remind me of another rather classic sci-fi film and I found it interesting that it was keeping company with a lot of other films that were referenced in the episode. Of course, I’m talking about Planet of the Apes.

A shortlist, then, from Transit: Casablanca, Blade Runner, Star Wars, and The Prisoner, minimum.

All of them just happen to have in common the plot point of a rebel or resistance movement attempting to overthrow their masters, which fits nicely into where FRINGE seems to be headed.

Planet of the Apes isn’t a bad fit, either, especially if you consider the wider mythology of the sequels in which we see how apes overthrew their human masters. Ah, but why bring it up at all? Well, here’s the thing, and I will be treading in spoiler territory for a 1968 movie so if you haven’t seen it, all apologies:

The thing I was reminded of was that in Planet of the Apes, the apes were divided into a strict caste system. The gorillas are militaristic; the orangutans (like Dr. Zaius) are involved in law and administration; and the chimpanzees are the intellectual class, such as the scientists Cornelius and Zira. I’m proposing that Observer society is broken down in a similar fashion. It would neatly explain why our friends with the monthly names (who we’ve been informed are scientists) seem so very different from the ones we saw running the show in 2036.

There’s a lot of other interesting things going on too, however, in the intersection (or, perhaps, epicenter) where FRINGE meets Planet of the Apes. So much so that I’m starting to wonder why it hasn’t come up before.

Apes’ main conceit is that after Mankind destroyed itself, evolution pressed on but in a way that would be awfully confusing to someone who’d left the planet for 700 years. The picture asks us how we can tell the humans from the animals if the animals are the ones that talk. Much of the movie’s humor comes from the apes saying things about humans that we’re used to hearing said about animals. It’s precisely the sort of viewpoint we see in FRINGE’s 2036 when Captain Windmark tells Broyles “I like animals.” Taylor’s observation on the meek and mute humans he’s seen – “If this is the best they've got around here, in six months we'll be running this planet.” – certainly mirrors the attitude of The Observers we meet in Transit. So the human/ape relationship in POTA resembles the Observer/Human one on FRINGE, which begs the question: which way is or has evolution gone/going here? It’s a question that I think we might want to bear in mind during the season finale.

Then there’s the matter of 2036’s Ministry Of Science. Lo and behold, in POTA, Dr. Zaius is…the Minister of Science. He was the keeper of a secret too terrible to tell, namely that the world had once been run by men until they destroyed it. In Apes, Oppenheimer’s worst nightmare has come true. If Nina Sharp, therefore, is Dr.Zaius, what secrets might she be keeping and what might be about to happen?

Is it possible that Nina and Broyles (to pick the most likely two) have been through this a number of times before but retained their memories? I keep returning to Nina because I don’t think that FRINGE has given up its structural fun with The Wizard of Oz by a long shot, and it’s The Wicked Witch who’s the worst of its villians. So we may have more to learn about Nina yet.

I’ve read a great many theories lately about what’s going on, but I don’t see very many that take into account the fact that FRINGE wants to provide a certain balance and symmetry in its story. Which means, basically, that one would be well served to look for this story’s end in its beginning. But back to Oz: I don’t think I read one review of Worlds Apart that seemed to link up Bolivia’s rainbow story with the famous song from The Wizard of Oz. And if you don’t think that Bolivia is going to look up into the sky and see a rainbow again by the time this is all over, then I’ve got a bridge to another universe I’d like to sell you. I think previews are fair game (if not, avert your eyes), so I think there might be one more twister that ends up sending everybody over the rainbow. (Olivia’s exhortation to “look up” comes from the end of Chaplin’s The Great Dictator, from which FRINGE also borrowed the double cross insignias.)

In fact, Planet of the Apes is sort of The Wizard of Oz in a funny suit. The protagonist goes through the entire film thinking that they’ve traveled so great a distance that they can never return, when the truth is that they haven’t gone anywhere. See how eerily the famous ending speech of Apes reads in light of what’s been happening (and what may happen) on FRINGE:

Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it. You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! Goddamn you all to hell!

And that’s when the camera pulls back to make its big reveal: The Statue of…

Well, that statue that FRINGE decided to make the location of its bridge between the universes. Interesting, no? What’s funny is that FRINGE already did its Apes reveal, sort of, when the camera pulled back to show us the Twin Towers at the end of its first season (and the end of Season Three actually featured the Statue of Liberty!).

But back to Oz.

After the Witch has been dispatched, there’s still the problem of getting Dorothy back over the rainbow. The solution, of course, comes from…

A man in a hot air balloon.

Ok, hear me out.

How incredibly cool would it be if, when things have gone as badly as they can go and there seems to be no way out, Alistair Peck shows up. (Hey, they kept the Nimoy thing quiet. I’m sure they could sneak Peter Weller onto a set!)

Who better, in the middle of a no-holds-barred confrontation about what does or doesn’t constitute God, or how Faith differs from Science than Alistair Peck, the mad scientist who tried to change the world to his own liking and ended up making the line between Reason and Religion indistinguishable?

There is no contradiction between faith and science... true science! – Dr. Zaius.

All he’d have to do is fire up that Faraday Mesh and somehow we’re back in the middle of Peter’s dream, only it’s not a dream: it’s real this time, complete with Walter’s pancakes and Olivia’s kiss. Fade out. It would be a little deus ex machina, I grant you, for Peck to show up and save our little band when the day is seemingly lost. But I’ve seen worse. It certainly beats my personal fantasy of seeing the camera pull back at the end to reveal yet another timeline, one in which the Statue of Liberty resembles… Olivia Dunham (not gonna happen).

Peck’s Faraday Cage made another appearance in this season’s And Those We’ve Left Behind (albeit as “Walter Bishop’s Faraday Harness”!) and I counted at least two Ghostbusters jokes last week. What was the name of that jerky little guy who kept making trouble for everybody? Oh yeah.

Peck.

Walter Peck.

Which reminds me of one last thing:

If, as Peck told us, Walter Bishop wrote New Frontiers In Genetic Hybridization, then, well…

Who’s really, really running the show? Do we even want to know?

The nanotech is “signed” with the X we saw on Man X’s shirt. But it’s the Bishops, like Walter’s father, that go in for those sort of chemical vanity signatures, as we learned when Walter discovered the seahorse hiding in the carbon chain of Robert Bishop’s toxin.

Why did Jones feel so honored to meet Walter Bishop in Ability?

Who really wrote the ZFT manual?

What if the biggest villain of all is Walter Bishop and he’s forgotten it?

And what if the same man if fated to kill Olivia in every timeline?

A planet where Observers evolved from men? There’s got to be an answer.

As Dr. Zaius said in his final parting shot:

Don't look for it, Taylor. You may not like what you find.

Fringe Review: Brave New World, Part I

“Anything is possible.”

And so it begins: the long, quick slide down the rocky outcropping towards the cliff from which we will hang with delicious, knuckle-whitening suspense until fall. “Brave New World, Part I” continues the great tradition of wonderful, mystifying, tantalizing penultimate episodes. And, in keeping with Fringe tradition, it is almost impossible to rate or even assess.

The first third of this episode was a fascinating low-key case of the week that set up the roller-coaster ride of the last two-thirds. Lost’s Rebecca Mader has made no secret of her membership in our unofficial Fringe fan club, and she did a wonderful job of showing us the outsider’s view of the events our heroes deal with every day. Her fear—and her strength—were a beautiful opportunity for Fringe to remind us what is at stake with every case: not just world-bending mind-altering insanity, but individual lives.

The evil burning nanites were creepy. (Nanites are creepy all the time. Like malevolent germs.) More to the point, their purpose is confusing: why would Jones leave such an obvious trail? Was he coached by Bell to draw the Fringe team out? In that case, Bell and Jones decided to sacrifice a bunch of people just to draw Walter’s attention to the continued existence of his ol’ friend Belly. And then Bell decided to sacrifice his bishop. (Jones, luckily, not one of our more loveable Bishops.)

Speaking of which: wow and double-wow! In a recent conference call, Pinkner and Wyman attested to their strong desire to get Leonard Nimoy back for the fifth season…and didn’t let anything slip about his appearance in this week’s episode. Now, not only is Bell back, but he’s possibly evil. Then again, his plans have always been mysterious: maybe he’s not a villain bent on the destruction of two universes. Maybe there’s more to this: Nina sure thinks so. Bell said he hadn’t made a move in his chess game in over 20 years. Is that an allusion to Peter’s death/abduction/etc?

(And what does Bell’s history of cancer, disappearance, and reappearance in this universe mean for the events of Seasons 1-3? How completely different were those first contacts between universes, without Bell to orchestrate them and move the pieces around the board? Argh, my brain!)

In addition to revealing Bell, the nanite case also revealed Olivia’s power of interpersonal telekinesis (for lack of a better phrase). She calmed Jessica’s nanites, and took over Peter’s body to help him fight Jones. That scene wasn’t my favorite, as the shadowboxing was clumsy, but this new aspect of Olivia’s power is both awe-inspiring and frightening. Peter promised Olivia they would figure out her new power together: “I will not lose you again, Olivia.” I can’t think of a better guarantee of something horrible happening to one of them in the next episode.

That would be emotionally difficult, as we’ve already (apparently) lost Lincoln Lee and an entire universe this season, we lost Jones in this episode, and Astrid is in dire straits. All that in an episode that also included the nanites, the sun-beam, Olivia’s powers, and the return of William Bell. That’s practically an entire chess game of events, and I didn’t even mention the lemon cake or the animalia.

Must Seem a Little Bizarre, Huh?

• Olivia: “Nursery?”
Peter: “Nursery?”
Olivia: “Nursery.”

• Walter: “…my lethal friend.”

• Peter: “That’s what happens when you drink and mince.”

• Walter: “Jones must be reflecting light off something, like one of the disco balls.”

• Walter: “…and shut off the sun. Well, you know what I mean.”

• Walter: “It’s a fool’s errand, and I am a fool. No one is asking you to join me, Alex. It’s much hunch, and I’m quite capable of pursuing it on my own. So peace out.”
Astrid: “Alex?”
Walter: “I was on a roll.”

• Walter: “I knew it! Chilean almonds!” Obviously!

• Walter: “Sounds like a rhino. But more nasal.”

• Bell: “Hello, old friend.”

• I would like to nominate “Eyes Without a Face” for the creepiest song ever, please. Especially muzaked.

• Did anyone worry that the nanites would infect anyone who touched the nanited people?

• I apologize if this is a stupid question, but why did Jones disintegrate?

Attempting to rate this episode when Part II is still to come seems like a fool’s errand of my own. So I’ll let you do it:

In the first hour of the two-part season finale airing Friday, the couple explore their options.

In the first hour of the season four closer, airing Friday, Peter (Josh Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv) share a sweet moment in bed, presumably before chaos ensues, in an exclusive scene from "Brave New World: Part 1."
The reunited couple runs down a list of Massachusetts cities (Lexington, Medford among the lucky towns) they could move to and settle down in, but knowing how the Fringe universe operates, that won’t be happening any time soon.

At one point during the early morning conversation, Olivia brings up chatter about a nursery (a baby?!), which surprises Peter. And rightly so. It was several episodes ago that Olivia and Peter weren’t remotely on the same wavelength to even introduce such a topic.

This Week’s TV: Is Leonard Nimoy really coming back to Fringe?

The promo for this week's Fringe hints that a special guest star could help the show live long and prosper... but is it true?

Fringe (9 PM, FOX):

David Robert Jones' final plan kicks into action, and judging from this clip, we may get a teeny bit more Nimoy action:

Walter reluctantly revisits his painful past after terrifying cases of spontaneous human combustion. Meanwhile, the future of both universes is at stake when the Fringe team faces David Robert Jones in the mother of all battles.

I'm guessing it'll be the voice of Nimoy in a recording, or the brain of Nimoy in a computerized shell, or some other way to have Nimoy without requiring him to be physically present. But we'll see!

Now that we are for sure getting a fifth (albeit final) season, here’s one face you might see pop up in the show’s forever twisty universe: Robin Williams. TV’s erstwhile Mork, who after a long string of big screen outings has in recent years guested on Law & Order: SVU, Louie and, coming up, Wilfred, says Fox’s sci-fi series is at the top of his list to visit next. “My god, Fringe would be amazing,” he told me at the Comedy Awards, where he was honored as a Stand-Up Icon. (Williams also is high on Homeland, though frankly we can only see his bearded self playing Mandy Patinkin’s twin brother.) In fact, the funny man is game to join a TV series on a full-time basis. “F—in’ A, yeah, I’d do it — if it was fun,” he said.

Fringe’ Spoilers Plus a Renewal Update!

Since it seems like FOX remains content to make us wait until the end of the universe for news on a renewal for a fifth season of ‘Fringe,’ our efforts are best spent looking toward the current run of episodes. And after the trippy time-travel that was “Letters of Transit,” just what’s going to unfold in the final episodes of ‘Fringe’s fourth season?

Look no further! Amidst a mass of other May Sweeps spoilers of its most popular programs, FOX has doled out telling episode descriptions of the final three ‘Fringe’ episodes of the season! Sadly, none of them seem to hearken back to the admittedly left-field, but ultimately awesome future story glimpsed in last Friday’s “Letters of Transit,” though it looks like Olivia, Astrid, Lincoln, Broyles and the Bishops are moving full steam ahead in their battle to prevent David Robert Jones (‘Mad Men‘s Jared Harris) from collapsing both universes. Fringe Takes #19 To Even Greater Extremes Of The Odd And Deeply Disturbing!

The year is 2036 and the Observers have taken over – but there is a resistance. That’s the basic setup for Fringe’s [Fox, Fridays, 10/9C] annual ‘out there’ episode [remember the previous animated, or musical 19th episodes], Letters of Transit [check out the cast teasing the episode above, and follow the jump to my review].

Letters of Transit takes its title from a key element of the film Casablanca – and there actually are similar documents in this strangest episode of Fringe’s fourth season.

The world has been taken over by the Observers, who do not take kindly to those who might wish to resist their rule – but resist, some brave humans do. There is a special police force to deal with ‘native’ actions against the Observers, but a remnant of Fringe division still exists to police ‘native on native’ violence.

A young Fringe agent named Etta [Georgina Haig] and an older agent named Simon Foster [Henry Ian Cusick] seem to be the most effective members of the resistance – and she has discovered something that could turn the tide against the Observers. Unfortunately, time – and some forms of technology – are not on their side.

Oddly enough, there’s not really much more I can say about the events of Letters of Transit without giving up at least a few juicy spoilers – except to say that we see some different versions of Broyles [Lance Reddick] and Nina Sharp [Blair Brown] as well as a more familiar Peter [Joshua Jackson]and Astrid [Jasika Nicole] and yet another version of Walter [John Noble].

All you really need to know, beyond that, is that Letters of Transit is as twisted and out there as previous 19th episodes in the series’ run – and concludes with a revelation that counts as one of the most major in the show’s four season run, to date.

Question: What is the deal with Fringe? They keep dragging out this renewal/cancellation business and it is making me really mad! They need to make a decision. —Brian

Ausiello: I thought for sure today was the day we’d hear something. I’m pretty sure a decision to bring the show back for a fifth and final season has been made, with the two sides just trying to make the numbers work. But I’d be lying if I said the delay isn’t worrisome. In the meantime, we asked John Noble at last week’s opening of the Beverly Hills Paley Center’s “Television: Out of the Box” exhibit if any of the May 11 season finale would take place in the Alt Universe, and he said, “Not in the actual final episode, but you’ll see a lot of it in the one before.” We also presented Josh Jackson with the theory that Olivia being fated to die will tie in with the mysterious Mr. X seen in last year’s animated episode. His response? “That’s a good theory. You’re close, actually. Not all the way there, but you’re close.”

OK, so now there is this.

While the very real future of Fox’s Fringe still hangs in the balance, the network has let slip with a handful of episodic photos from the annually “out there” Episode 19, which this time around is titled “Letters of Transit.”

The title is of course a nod to the (fictional) documents that drive the narrative of the 1942 cinematic classic Casablanca, papers that ostensibly allow a person to travel freely and without question during World War II. And per Fox’s official synopsis, “the story jumps ahead to 2036 when the Observers and the Fringe team engage in a game-changing battle.”

Fox’s Fringe, which for four years now has traded in dual universes, doppelgängers and shape-shifting body doubles, is fittingly prepping alt versions of its Season 4 finale, as Fox and Warner Bros. TV continue to negotiate the possibility of a Season 5.

“We’ve shot two [endings],” John Noble told TVLine at the opening of the Beverly Hills Paley Center’s “Television: Out of the Box” exhibit, which was created in conjunction with Warner Bros. TV.

Noble says many “big questions” will be answered in the season finale airing May 11 — including the matter of Olivia being fated to die (and whether the animated episode’s “Mr. X” figures into it) and Walter shouldering the burden of responsibility for the warring universes. Viewers also can expect a surprise on the villainy front (David Robert Jones plays “a very big part, but not as big as you think,” Noble teased. “There’s something bigger.”)

But as Joshua Jackson told us Thursday night, “The writers have given themselves a device by which we can tell a fifth-season story without having to leave this season’s story open.”

Fringe Bosses Answer Burning Questions, Including Peter's New Journey

The question of whether Peter does indeed need to find his way home — or, as some theories have suggested, he's already there — will finally be answered in this week's episode of Fringe.

With eight episodes remaining before the season finale — and hopefully not the series finale — what will Peter's journey now look like? TVGuide.com turned to executive producer Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman to get the scoop. Plus: The "X" man returns!

Peter (Joshua Jackson) decided to stay away from Olivia (Anna Torv). What will his journey look like now?
Jeff Pinkner: He's ultimately decided to stay away from her in that episode. This next episode, the one that Joel directed, is going to be a very powerful one and a very gratifying one for the 'shippers. The end of that story is by no means written.

Olivia is destined to die in every timeline, as September (Michael Cerveris) said. Will Peter be able to stay away from her? And with the whole death premonition out there, might we finally meet the man with the "X" on his shirt that Olivia thought would someday kill her?
J.H. Wyman: We never like to put anything into the air that we don't readdress. There was a reason why she said that. You'll definitely get an answer to that. As far as Peter goes, what's terrifying is that when somebody tells you everything that happens, you're going to start looking at life in a different way, like you won't cross the street the same way, would you? You'd constantly be looking extra carefully at everything. It's not the first time she's faced this kind of this dilemma.

Could the man with the "X" on his shirt be somebody we've met before?
Wyman: Don't forget, when that happened, which Olivia remembers, it was a very strange episode that took place in William Bell's mind, so it could be somebody who William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) knows or has experience with.
Pinkner: The short answer is: For people who remember that moment fondly or threateningly, it will get paid off.

Olivia is remembering things that Peter didn't even know. So maybe he's not imprinting his own memories on her? Will that be addressed in Friday's episode?
Wyman: It will. That was the thing that was on purpose, when you realized that something didn't make sense. Sometimes you feel you know what's going on, and then all of a sudden it flips and we're trying to make you look at it from a different perspective, but you will definitely get an answer. [Friday's episode] "A Short Story About Love" is definitely a culmination of all the things we've been working towards and it's definitely a must-see because of that. It delivers on promises and even poses a couple of questions you didn't think of. It's definitely one to see for resolution.
Pinkner: People who like scares, people who like intrigue, people who like romance, people who like answers, they're all well-attended in that episode.
Wyman: It definitely has one of the most terrifying bad guys that we've had. As far as our freaks-of-the-week goes, he's definitely the most terrifying.

Keck's Exclusives: Lost's Rebecca Mader to Guest-Star on Fringe

Fringe ended last season with a disappearing act for Peter. In May's season finale, it's Olivia who'll be getting lost. Well, she'll be getting a visit from a Lost alum, Rebecca Mader, who played Charlotte.

Rebecca's character, Jessica, appears in the last two episodes of the season (or series, depending on whether or not Fox picks it up). Producers are keeping quiet on specifics, but they tell me Jessica is a strong, brave woman involved in a case linked to supervillain David Robert Jones.

Fringe finally returns to FOX with an all-new episode this week, and “A Short Story About Love” is bound to be an extremely special one for the fans. Not only is it also directed by showrunner J.H. Wyman-- a rarity for a network series delivering a full season order for the year-- but it is the episode that will provide answers as to whether or not Peter (Joshua Jackson) is in the right universe after all.

When we caught up with Fringe cast and producers at WonderCon right here in Anaheim CA over the weekend, Jeff Pinkner wouldn’t answer which Fringe fan theory was correct about Peter and his idea of “home.” But he did promise that the answer will be revealed and will fit what the show has been saying all along.

“We’ve been saying it all along. The show [has been saying it]-- the show has not been lying,” Pinkner teased.

“The whole series has been about choices and impacts and how you impact others. For us there’s a couple of big things about that [paying off this season],” Wyman added.

“Number one, it just shows us that people really started to care about this Olivia. When we first went over to the other side, it was like ‘Oh, I’m never going to like these people!’ But now they love them. They fell in love with them like how we were in love with them.”

Series star John Noble said he really enjoyed the episode because it deals with the strange concept of being attracted to each other based on pheromones: “This particular event is about someone who uses this fact to create [attraction].” And Noble pointed out that Walter is quite intrigued by such a thing because “he loves smelling things and creating smells and digging around in bodies to find the reasons why.” So needless to say, Walter may be in heaven in the episode.

Ausiello: Just a coy answer from exec producer Jeff Pinkner when we asked him about the casting of Henry Ian Cusick and Georgina Haig as FBI agents — the latter of which has been ID’d in some pap pics as Young Olivia (!). “We were unbelievably fortunate to have them… and they really enjoyed being part of the show,” he says. “But to tell you anything more than that would really be a betrayal to the surprise of seeing the episode.” And as fellow EP J.H. Wyman reminds, the duo appear in this season’s 19th episode, which traditionally deviates from the norm (see 2010′s musical “Brown Betty” or last year’s animated entry), “So half the fun is waiting.” Also factor in this: Joshua Jackson, when asked if he has scenes with Cusick and/or Haig, said, “I do not. For reasons I can’t tell you, I do not.” Pinkner also says that the lingering (frustrating?) question of when or whether Peter will return to his timeline will “very soon” become moot.
