Fringe Episode 4.10 Review - Forced Perspective - Deconstructed

Nina is going to fix Olive.

This episode was definitely low-key, as the focus was shifted to Olivia facing her fate, in the aftermath of the bald man's warning of her impending demise.

What it did was to give her another new layer. She is within character as she tries to hide her pain (migraines) and concerns from all the people who care about her. We have Olivia taking control of her destiny. Despite knowing that the observer experienced the future where she has to die, she may not die at all. She may even save herself. That's why this is science fiction. Besides if William Bell can cheat death once...

Nothing is written in stone.

We don't have to die today.

Emily Mallum has a precognitive ability that allows her to predict death. She uses her natural gift to warn people, even if she had not been able to prevent the inevitable from happening. The closest analogy to the previous season is The Ghost Network. No matter what the science was used to explain how she can see the future, like Roy McComb, she was a receiver for such echoes in time.

Not all of the gadgets and references, from the past, worked for me, even after the second time I watched it. It was just not necessary. The plot hole here was with Albert Duncan. If his anger was directed only at the judge, then having the larger yield explosive was overkill.

Random Thoughts...

Do you recognize the throw pillows in the above image? They once belonged in the alternate universe Dunham apartment.

Nina Sharp was going to cook with her gloves on. I like to see her handle the ingredients like that.

Not only does Phillip Broyles know everything. He tells Nina everything he knows. Are those two still intimate?

A mention of first people was not used in the same context.

A lake house also represented happier times.

Emily's last drawing in the park, had Olivia looking on like an observer. The scene is somewhat different than the previous images as the subjects depicted did not all die.

An observer standing outside Olivia's apartment at a key moment in time. Any guesses what that maybe? I think Nina is going to enhance her.

Massive Dynamic is the likely 'we' Broyles said who was tracking for the strange bald me. Doesn't seem like something the FBI would commit their resources to without just cause. And it wouldn't be just for the last three years, with the numerous sightings.

Peter has already arrived at the conclusion that it will not work for him. Don't have enough facts to even wonder about this.

TV.com Throwdown, the Results Show: Which J.J. Abrams Show is Better, Lost or Fringe?

Remind me never to ever make Lost or Fringe the subject of Throwdown again. You guys commented in record numbers for the feature, amassing more than 600 responses. And for the most part, the discussion was remarkably civil and only devolved into fanboy name-calling toward the end. But I don't see that as hostility, I see that as a sign of passion (and maybe a little bit of "daddy didn't love you enough").

It was great to see all the love for Fringe and Lost. The majority of you really liked both shows, and I got a kick out of all the "Don't make me choose!" responses. But think of it as practice for the next time you're in a concentration camp and the German guard says you can only take one of your children (Sophie's Choice, anyone?). Also, a lot of you with Fringe user icons chose Lost, and vice versa. To me, that's a testament to how good both shows are.

But in the end, the winner was... Fringe, by a vote of 219 to 143. There were lots of disclaimers because Fringe hasn't ended, and some people were turned off by Lost's finale. Fringe supporters cited its sci-fi roots, question-answering, and more time spent with a smaller cast. Those who favored Lost noted its ability to change the way we watch television, its spirituality, its social impact, and its abundance of stellar episodes. As for my stance, I'm going to side with the 17 folks who copped out and said "both." Yeah, yeah, I'm a wuss. I know. But when I look at the pros and cons of both shows, I see them as even. I'm a million-percent invested in Fringe and love the way it makes me think, but I'll never forget how I felt about Lost and how it changed me as a television viewer.

Let's take a look at the results in pie-graph form, because that's what Mr. Eko would have wanted us to do.

If you’ve been watching Fringe this season, then you’ll recognize Michelle Krusiec as the actress who played one of the new, human shapeshifters. If you haven’t been watching, maybe Michelle herself can convince you to give it a shot! Michelle took the time to chat with us this week about her experiences on Fringe: covering everything from how the show is like an illicit drug to what it’s like to play a superhuman. Michelle also reveals the previously-unknown “shapeshifter” name of her character. The shapeshifter has been known only as Nadine, who was first introduced in the season premiere, and was seen most recently in last week’s episode “Enemy Of My Enemy”. I will say that I myself am curious as hell about what the shapeshifter name may signify…
And now I’ll let you get on to the good stuff:

TVOvermind: Had you been a fan of Fringe before working on the show?
Michelle Krusiec: I can't honestly call myself a fan prior to working on it, because that would make the real fans pretty upset since they are true fans. I watched the pilot and I was intrigued, but I'm not an avid TV watcher. Mostly because of time and lack of it, nothing to do with the show itself. I remember watching Fringe randomly one night earlier this season and I was totally confused by the two Olivias, but still, I was intrigued, and wondered what in the world the storyline was about!

What was it like to work on the show?
I was really giddy with excitement because it's a J.J. Abrams show and my character was just so awesome. I was told she was a new breed of shapeshifter, but I had no idea what the hell that really meant, in terms of the show's mythology; I got to work and started watching as many episodes as I could. The first episode I was in, I was mostly dead, and since it was raining in Vancouver, I basically watched 36 back-to-back episodes. I felt like some junkie hopped up in my hotel room. My curtains were drawn. I'd watch it in bed, from the bathtub, with room service. I couldn't stop watching it. I was completely hooked, and in complete awe of the storyline.

I'm such a sucker for sci fi because my Dad and I bonded over them growing up. Whenever sci fi is at its best, it makes you examine morality, ethics and the human condition: it really brings to light great questions and theoreticals about mankind and behavior. In the case of Fringe, I was really struck by this notion of how one man's mistakes affect two universes and the people in them. The way the writers explored these questions while still maintaining a procedural show was impressive to me. And then to top it off, the calibre of acting on the show was so striking. I felt like I had won the lottery to be invited onto the show.

What are some of your favorite memories and experiences from working on Fringe?
Some of my favorite moments include getting my face scanned for the digital effects and seeing a 3D version of my face on the computer. And I loved my character's name "Seven" because it's just a badass name.

I loved playing with the guns. I took that very seriously. I felt that a shapeshifter would move differently than humans and I wanted to be completely collected when I was operating firearms. I practiced rolling around on the floor and shooting, which I never did in the show, and the firearms expert even told me while I was doing it, “they probably won’t ask you to do that,” but I’d just keep on rolling around on the floor. Basically, any time I got to kick ass, I was giddy with excitement because Seven has superhuman abilities and you just don't get a chance to play characters like that very often. I was a little jealous whenever I had to shapeshift into another human being though, because another actor played that part. But it was also really awesome to see how they lined up my face with the other actress Lori Triolo's face so they could shift our faces together. It was odd how our features were actually very similar on camera. Who would have guessed I'd have Italian features?

Doing the shapeshifting in and out of characters was more challenging than I expected because it had to be subtle and it’s mostly digital effects so your face is like a canvas. The first time I did it, I just went crazy and after my first take the director Joe Chapelle just said, "Uh, make it smaller." That made me laugh, because I think I may have gone a little overboard with it. All the other shapeshifters made it look so painful, so I thought I was doing exactly what I'd seen on the show, but I was mistaken. There's a great scene where Seven is injecting herself with the formula to correct her genetic mutation that's preventing her from shapeshifting on command. I loved shooting in that bathroom because it was a small little space and any kind of transformation scene like that for an actor is really fun to do.

I also loved seeing Gene the cow. I wish I had taken a photo with her now… Can you tell that I had a blast shooting this show?

Fringe Observiews 4.09 Enemy Of My Enemy

Welcome to the Observiews for Season 4 of Fringe. I call them Observiews because they are more visual observations than deep thinking reviews, if that makes sense.

All observations are mine and therefore could be totally off the wall and/or wrong. I have not read or looked at any recaps or reviews. I could also have missed a few things, oh well…

OLIVIA: “I know that it's a lot to take in.”
ALICE: “I'm not sure I'll ever really understand what happened. And I'm not sure it would make any difference if I did. You know...”

I believe this was the best episode ever, at least so far. And not being completely able to wrap my head around all of it makes me come back every week.

Who’s? Jones? Olivia? Or does it serve as a clue for next week, seeing all the people die in the preview .

As we discovered last week, Broyles is a mole. Still not sure if he also is a shapeshifter.

He found out where our Lincoln was held and prepared a nice cocktail for him, either to kill him or get information or something else?

Meanwhile Alt-Lincoln and Fauxlivia tracked down Jones

who just killed one out of 47 (recurring number) shapeshifters. Why?

Jones: “I suppose this is what it feels like to have a child… to love as a parent does.”

I don’t know but this line from 1.14 Ability has been in my head ever since I knew he was coming back:

"My girl"

So back at the lab, Walter just discovered molecular gastronomy. WALTER: “Look, spherical pastrami. You hungry?”

I would have said no as well! I’m still getting over bacon flavored cupcake frosting. Blech! And I’m not sure I want to try Parmesan ice cream.

Olivia actually came to see Astrid

to ask her to check this blood sample against national and international databases. If this is September’s blood I will be very surprised if they find anything.

2.08 August. PETER: “Well, I doubt he's gonna show up on any database at least none from this century.”
And how did she get that sample anyway?

The color for this episode seemed to be green.

This is from 3.14 6B.

There was also lots of red.

I don’t know maybe it had to do with GREEN, GREEN, GREEN, RED.

PETER: “We're leaving.”
LINCOLN: “Wait a minute -- we might finally get some answers. We should stay here, and we should assist with the interrogation.”
PETER: “No. I finally got Walternate to agree to help me. I don't think the way to say thank you is to tell him how to do his job.”
LINCOLN: “So that's it. Yeah, you... you got what you wanted.”

PETER: “Yes, I got what I wanted. And whatever he finds out in that interrogation he's gonna share with you. So you got what you came for. And now all I want to do is get back to the other side, study the blueprints.”
LINCOLN: “I need to be a part of this investigation. I lost a partner.”
PETER: “I lost a universe!”

As they were about to leave I guess, Jones was brought in and of course Peter recognized him.

Jones is being questioned.

Hey he’s been there before.

I still can’t decide if 1.17 Bad Dreams or 1.14 Ability is my favorite episode from season 1 but 4.09 Enemy Of My Enemy definitely had 1.14 Ability written all over, this being the first of many parallels to it.
For clarity current episode pictures are on top, parallels from 1.14 Ability and others are on the bottom. If not otherwise indicated, parallels are from 1.14 Ability.

JONES: “I’m sure you have an abundance of questions. But I doubt I'd answer any of them. Besides which, we don't have much time. I imagine you'd like to avoid unnecessary deaths.”

JONES: “… I was hoping to speak with Agent Dunham as soon as possible. I prefer to avoid any additional, unnecessary deaths.”

ALT- BROYLES: “We're not in the business of responding to threats.”

HARRIS: “Well, that may be the case, but the United States doesn't negotiate with terrorists.”

JONES: “Oh, I wouldn't call it that. Consider it an insurance policy.”

OLIVIA: “Tell me about the attack that you're planning.”
JONES: “I wouldn't call it that. I'd call it an insurance policy.”

JONES: “An agent of mine -- a shape-shifter posing as Doctor Brandon Fayette -- was taken off-line earlier today.”

OLIVIA: “A colleague of mine just died. He was twenty-seven years old. He was due to get married next month.”

Jones: “I wouldn’t mind a cup of tea.”

He had asked for one in 1.14 Ability as well.

PETER: “I know who that man is. His name is David Robert Jones.”
SECRETARY BISHOP: “Go on.”
PETER: “He's a scientist. He has a background in biotechnology and genetic weaponry.”
SECRETARY BISHOP: “If you're right, we'll have a record of him -- we don't. He's not in any database.”
PETER: “Because he's not from your universe. He crossed over from the other side.”
SECRETARY BISHOP: “How can you be so certain? You've already said that things are different from your timeline.”
PETER: “Let me talk to him.”

OLIVIA: “He wants to talk to me. Let me in there.”

ALT-BROYLES: “Sir, I hardly think that's wise.”

That made me think of 3.04 Do Shapeshifters Dream Of Electric Sheep?

FAUXLIVIA: “I don't think it's a good idea. Imagine the panic if she talks to the press.”

So Peter is allowed to question him and Jones seems quite rattled when Peter tells him that and how he knows him as he recalls the events from 1.20 There Is More Than One Of Everything.

PETER: “The last time I saw you, you were completely falling apart -- molecular disintegration due to transporting out of a German prison. They had to wrap you in bandages just keep you from turning into a puddle on the floor. It seems like you figured out a way to heal yourself. Do you mind if I ask? What was it -- some sort of DNA graft?”
JONES: “I've never met you in my life.”
PETER: “No. But I've met you.”
JONES: “Where?”
PETER: “When you were crossing out of your universe into this one. You created a - a doorway, a portal. I’m the man who closed it on you. It cut you right in half.”
JONES: “Interesting story. Yet I’m still in one piece. I believe you've run out of time.”

So then Jones had finagled something that he does best.

And the results are horrible.

Back on our side Olivia is asking to speak with Broyles about Peter and Lincoln but he has already been informed.

OLIVIA: “You know?”
BROYLES: “That you helped them cross over to the other side without my authorization? Yes, I know. I've just received word from my alter ego. Needless to say, he was about as amused as I am.”
OLIVIA: “Are they okay?”
BROYLES: “They're fine. And we'll deal with the issue of your insubordination once we've resolved the situation.”
OLIVIA: “What situation?”
BROYLES: “Take a seat. Have you ever heard of a man named David Robert Jones?”
OLIVIA: “No.”
BROYLES: “Neither had I. He's been in Frankfurt Prison for possession of state secrets. Three years ago, he broke out. Apparently, since then, he's made his way to the other side.”

1.07 In Which We Meet Mr. Jones
That’s where Olivia met him for the first time, at least in the original time line. And that’s where he broke out of in 1.10 Safe using Walter’s device, hidden in the safety deposit boxes.

So Secretary Bishop decides to let Jones go to see what he is up to. Alt-Lincoln planted a tracker in his tea. I guess I should say, be careful when you drink tea, you never know what’s in it. First soul magnets and now tracking devices, lol.

They find him sitting at a café where they keep multiple eyes on him. Honestly the green chairs don’t look very inviting to me.

Our Lincoln is inquiring about Alt-Lincoln and Fauxlivia. Is… ours… hitting on her?

But Fauxlivia just explains that her Lincoln is helping her over a broken relationship.

(2.21 Over There Part 1)

So I wonder what happened between Frank and her in this timeline.

Okay, back to the story. Jones needs to come up with a diversion. And of course he uses the same means as in 1.14 Ability – money. This time it’s only a tracker in the bills

but last time in 1.14 Ability it was covered with skin growth toxin.

With the tracker in the bills it makes him indistinguishable from the rest. And I’m assuming the liquid he drank, destroyed the one in his body. So he got away.

And his helper is just standing there.

Who are you, Alt-Broyles?

ELIZABETH: “Walter, I know whatever happened today was a setback.”
SECRETARY BISHOP: “There's more than that. We were severely compromised. Another please.” ELIZABETH: “And more Scotch is gonna change that?”

3.15 Subject 13
ELIZABETH: “That's fine. You still need to eat. If nothing else, You need to put something in your stomach to absorb all that alcohol.”

SECRETARY BISHOP: “It was my decision, Elizabeth. I knew the risk. I took a -- an immense gamble. And now that man Jones is gone.”

3.12 Concentrate And Ask Again

SAM WEISS: “Okay. What I can tell you is this... That device can either be used as a tool of creation or as a weapon of destruction. Depends on your point of view. And Peter Bishop is uniquely tuned to operate it. Whatever frequency Peter's vibrating at will determine how the machine reacts.”

SECRETARY BISHOP: “But I can't help him. And apparently, the other Walter refuses to... which is... ironic, given the lengths that that man went to in the past.”
ELIZABETH: “That is not your fault. It never was.”
SECRETARY BISHOP: “Well, the outcome is still the same. I couldn't save our son then. And I can't help him now.”
ELIZABETH: “Maybe I can. Maybe I can help Peter.”

Meanwhile back Fringe HQ

Alt-Astrid moving her fingers like that reminded me of Milo in 3.03 The Plateau.

And then she asked Peter if he was from a different timeline and he said: “Yeah, I think so.”

PETER: “In its natural state, Amphilicite is inert. It's not really reactive, like helium. But if you know how to process it properly, it can be used as a power source.”

Jones used it to cross over in 1.20 There Is More Than One Of Everything.

Fauxlivia: “How do you know all this?”
PETER: “Because where I’m from, William Bell used a tiny amount of it to create a battery. Jones stole the battery.”
It was hidden in Nina’s arm (1.20 There's More Than One Of Everything)

After Jones disappeared from the park he crossed over to our universe leading everyone else to the wrong location.

He seemed shaky after he had crossed. I wonder if there are still consequences for him crossing between universes.

Finally some “Gene” time. I was wondering what had happened to her.

Walter has a visitor.
ELIZABETH: “I never expected to see you again. I suppose it's appropriate that... a version of our son should bring us together. I came here for Peter. I understand you're refusing to help him.” WALTER: “I’m sorry you traveled so far. I can't. I have made my position quite clear.” ELIZABETH: “The last time I saw you, you had come to save a boy's life. Now I've come to do the same.”

That reminded me of 3.08 Entrada. OLIVIA: “This all began because a man came over here to save a boy and twenty-five years later, I came back to save that same boy.”

Walter is breaking my heart.

So Peter comes back to this side. Peter is trying to take all the blame.

PETER: “How much trouble you in?”
OLIVIA: “On a scale of one to ten? A lot.”
PETER: “I’m sorry.”
OLIVIA: “It'll blow over. It's not the first time.”

Two incidents came to mind.

1.06 The Cure

BROYLES: “You think you’re the only one who wants to find Claire Williams? Meanwhile you violated the cardinal law of our profession. You let your feelings drive your decision-making. And as a result, you’ve endangered not only Claire Williams’ life, but everything we’re trying to do here. If I can’t trust you to control your own passion, Dunham, then I can’t trust you... Is that clear?”

The other one is from 1.17 Bad Dreams

BROYLES: “I have a lawsuit from a restaurant manager in New York. I have unauthorized allocation of Agency time and resources. I have access of government databases for personal use. What’s going on?”

Back at the lab Walter offers Elizabeth a cup of tea or coffee.

When I saw this I thought “ooh cool, please sit down Walter” because it reminded me of the first time Olivia and Peter had a cup of coffee at the lab.

The whole scene between Elizabeth and Walter was just awesome.

ELIZABETH: “You made a mistake. That's what being a man is.”
WALTER: “It was more than a mistake. I broke universes. I asked for a sign of forgiveness. But I got nothing. There is no absolution for me.”
But Walter you did get a sign 2.17 White Tulip, at least in our timeline.

ELIZABETH: “Well, I don't believe that. I forgive you, Walter. I forgave you a long time ago. And if I can God can. We both lost our sons. We never watched them grow up and fall in love, have babies.”

I miss baby Henry.

“But there's something of them in him. In this Peter. I know you feel it too. And if you could just help him... Walter, he deserves to go back to the people he loves... and who love him.”

WALTER: “I’m afraid.”
ELIZABETH: “So is he.”

Peter and the rest of the team go to Mohonk Quarry on this side to catch Jones.

JONES: “Secure the cargo. Hold them off.”

1.20 There is More Than One Of Everything
JONES: “Keep going please. Don't stop what you're doing. Hold them off as long as you can.”

Peter shoots Nadine the shapeshifter.

Is she dead? Does it matter, are there more of her?

Jones is able to get away opening a window and Olivia follows him. Peter warns her that if she follows and the window closes it will kill her.

That was close.

The news that September shared with her must always be on her mind now, I guess. Will it change her decisions and choices?

Back at the bridge-room Secretary Bishop encourages to work together, to fight the shapeshifters and Jones together. They also know that there is a mole, who of course sits right there with them unbeknownst to them. And that’s too bad because they also have something that Jones didn’t anticipate and that is Peter.

This probably also means that Peter has no intention right now to return to his timeline.

Aww Peter!

Aww Olivia!

Told you I'm a hopeless P/O shipper.
She wants to know everything about Jones but Peter needs some sleep. And of course she thanks him for saving her life. I’ve stopped counting on how many times they did that for each other.

Later Peter has a visitor at the house.

No Peter, you are not dreaming this time. He is really there.

Walter has come to help. He tells Peter that his mother was a wonderful woman, all versions of her.

WALTER: “I'll help you, Peter. I will help you get home. The last twenty-five years I've spent thinking about losing my son. I thought I was an expert on loss. Maybe that's why you are here... mmm, because there are still things that I need to learn. What?”

PETER: “I just spent the last several days with the other Walter. And I was very surprised to learn that he's not the man that I thought he was. But I am not at all surprised to learn that you are.”
WALTER: “Is that a good thing?”
PETER: “Yes, Walter. That is a very good thing.”

So here we are at the end, Jones communicating with,

yep you guess it…Nina

Last time we saw Nina communicating in this manner was in 2.07 Of Human Action as she reported to Bell about mind control.

And the message that was exchanged this time does not sound good… for Olivia.

So what do they want from her?

Bear with me because I’m not sure how to articulate myself on a few things here.

Obviously Jones knows Olivia in this timeline. At the beginning he approached Fauxlivia to be taken to their leader, not Lincoln.
In our timeline it seemed he had known her for a long time. He also knew about Cortexiphan.

In 1.14 Ability he states that Olivia was tested on with the drug and he wanted to make sure, so he had her taken. I’m assuming that means he is aware of its power too.
But in the old timeline Jones and Nina were enemies, so what changed.
Is Nina trying to activate Olivia so they can use her to travel safely back and forth or are there other powers they’re trying to activate in her, like telekinesis or pyrokinesis? And if so, for what purpose?
Is this still ZFT?

Just a few random questions:
To Lincoln Peter says he lost a universe, to Alt-Astrid he says he thinks he’s from a different timeline.
Which one is it, Peter?

Another thought that’s not leaving my brain is this: what if Peter is still stuck in the machine and what we’re seeing is another possible parallel universe?

And for some reason I’ve been coming back to 3.09 Marionette where Walter asks Peter if Olivia has been replaced by a robot.

J.J. Abrams Talks ALCATRAZ, Serialized Storytelling, the Final Season of FRINGE, and Upcoming TV Projects

The new Fox drama series Alcatraz follows a unique trio investigating the mystifying reappearance of 302 the most notorious prisoners and guards, 50 years after they vanished. As San Francisco Police Department Detective Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones) and Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast Dr. Diego Soto (Jorge Garcia) help government agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill) and his associate, Lucy Banerjee (Parminder Nagra), piece together the inexplicable sequence of events, they ultimately discover a much larger, more sinister present-day threat.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, executive producer J.J. Abrams talked about what intrigued him about the premise of this series, the changes they decided to make to the original pilot, why serialization has become a dirty word for TV, and that this was designed as episodic with an over-arcing large story and mythology stories that they’ll get to, over time. He also talked about how hopeful he is that Fringe will get renewed for at least one more season, said that Eric Kripke (Supernatural) is doing a great job developing the Revolution pilot that he will be producing, and that he is excited to be working with One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn on a show in the vein of Felicity. What’s your sense about the likelihood of Fringe getting another season?
ABRAMS: I don’t know. For some sick reason, I’m hopeful. There is some stuff coming up that is so great. They’re doing such amazing work. Maybe it’s just that dumb optimism of hoping that, when good work is done, it gets rewarded. Some of the work that Jeff [Pinkner] and Joel [Wyman] are working on now is so good that I’m just crossing my fingers it gets to continue. And, if not on Fox, maybe somewhere else.

Has Fox given you any indication that they would give you a heads up before canceling the show, so that you can make sure things get wrapped up?
ABRAMS: I would think that, if the show was going to end, they’ve been so wonderful and incredibly supportive and really aware of the audience that they have and don’t have, I’m sure they would be courteous enough to do that.

What can fans expect from Fringe, for the remainder of this season?
ABRAMS: I don’t want to talk about anything specific that’s coming. But Joel Wyman, one of the showrunners, directed an episode that is incredibly romantic and powerful and emotional, and has my favorite combination of weird and sweet, sci-fi and romance.

Are you planning an endgame, story wise?
ABRAMS: Not in the immediate future. My dream would be that the next year would be the great ending for the show, to have one more season, but of course, any producer would say that.

'Fringe' Star Joshua Jackson: Cancelation 'Might Not Be Death'

It's times like these that having Observers in our world would be really handy. One way or the other, looking into the future would put a lot of fans' fears at ease, now that "Fringe" faces the very serious threat of cancellation following its currently airing fourth season.

At the Television Critics Association press tour earlier this month, Fox president Kevin Reilly confessed that the network loses "a lot of money on the show," and that Fox is "not in the business of losing money." Worrying comments indeed, so much so that members of the show's cast — including Joshua Jackson, who plays Peter Bishop — are preparing for the inevitable end.

"My gut says that the head of Fox doesn't go on national television and says 'I'm not in the business of losing money' as a joke," Jackson laughed while speaking with MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival.

Jackson, who's in Park City for his new movie "Lay the Favorite," believes that "Fringe" is just as strong quality-wise as it's ever been. But with the series in the midst of its all-time lowest ratings, the actor admitted that "Fringe" is now "in that awkward place of being on the bubble — or under the bubble, as the case might be."

But all hope is not lost, according to Jackson.

"I think there's a possibility that if people just watched the show on the day and date, and if the numbers came back, [renewal] is a possibility," he said. "They've talked about maybe going off network with it, too. The TV landscape is a different place than it used to be, so [cancelation on Fox] might not be death."

Jackson added that whether or not "Fringe" gets canceled, the only thing that matters to him — "beyond the selfishness of not wanting to lose my job" — is ensuring that there's enough time to finish the story.

"The only thing that would piss me off about being canceled is if we brought people along for all these years — and they've been so dedicated and really stuck with the show — and we didn't finish it up," he said.

To that end, Jackson said that there's still plenty of time to wrap up "Fringe" in this current season, given that they're only up to hour 16 of the fourth season's 22-episode order.

"I don't know how many hours it would take to implement the [writers' end game], but we have plenty of hours left," he said. "I think if we found out [about the show's future] in the next several weeks, there would be no problem getting to what the ending is supposed to be."

"There's Always Hope, Right?": Season 5 Discussions Underway, J.J. Abrams 'Hopeful' Show Will Be Back

When Fox president Kevin Reilly told journalists earlier this month that he’s essentially losing money on Fringe, he wasn’t just putting the show’s rabid fans on notice that a fifth season is far from a slam dunk, he was sending the following message to Warner Bros. Television: The ball’s in your court.

Basically, in order for Fox to justify renewing the low-rated cult fave, Warner Bros. would have to agree to drastically reduce the show’s license fee (i.e. the amount the studio charges the network for each episode).

But what’s that magic number? Sources confirm that both sides are currently trying to hash that out. “We remain hopeful that Fringe will be able to continue,” co-creator J.J. Abrams tells TVLine.

Warner Bros. no doubt remains even more hopeful. A fifth season would put Fringe at or very close to 100 episodes, a milestone that would enhance the show’s syndication prospects. (A studio rep declined to comment.)

The clock is ticking, but not as quickly as one might think. If this does turn out to be Fringe‘s final season, it wouldn’t actually impact producers’ Season 4 end game.

“Worst case scenario, if this were the last aired season of Fringe… we know what the end of this season is going to be,” EP Jeff Pinkner recently told TVLine, ”and it can function as a series finale.”

Fringe Review: Enemy of My Enemy

“You don’t know me, or what I’m capable of.”

Peter has finally succeeded at what he intended to do: bridging the gap between Over Here and Over There. At the end of Season Three, Peter put everything on the line to broker a peace between the two universes—and we all know how that turned out. Now, Peter’s wildcard status has brought both sides together to fight a common foe. As the saying goes, the enemy of my…oh.

Tensions between the two sides have been undeniably high ever since the season premiere. Remember the fraught conversations between Olivia and Bolivia about the new shapeshifters? Even without the events that we remember, we know that enough badness has happened to these ret-conned (or whatever-ed) heroes that they blame each other even if it’s just out of habit. But the threat of Jones’s shapeshifters transcends universal boundaries. Literally: the man makes slipping from one universe to the next look as easy as moving from the sofa to the comfy chair. An interuniversal enemy requires interuniversal cooperation.

Interestingly, Lincoln “Clark Kent” Lee seems to be a boundary-crossing kind of guy. After last week’s “No wonder you’re a detective” bickering, Lincoln “CK” Lee now refers to himself and his Superman counterpart as “us” when talking to Bolivia about the possibility of romance. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both Lincolns were dressed so similarly and without glasses for so much of the episode—frequently, the only way I could distinguish them was by how they were interacting with various characters.

Lincoln “CK” Lee and Peter, on the other hand, keep butting heads. I’d like them to be friends, because that’s just the sort of person I am, but their goals and their desires—not to mention the complexity of their respective relationships with Olivia—have kept them at cross purposes. I have to wonder, too, if Peter doesn’t still feel like he’s been interloped by Lincoln. Is Peter fully on board with his own theory about being in the wrong universe? It seems like a lot to take in, even with his background and experience.

The highlight of the conversation-scenes was, undeniably, Walter’s discussion with Elizabeth. Orla Brady is incredible. She’s brought a tremendous depth to a character that we really haven’t seen much of, and it’s a delight to see her in action as Walternate’s wife and Walter’s former wife’s doppelganger.

In the midst of these touchy-feely interpersonal moments, though, “Enemy of My Enemy” also provided some nice enmity. Jones is scary. Killing an entire ER just to prove a point and get out of jail takes guts, and we know he’s willing to go even further. That he’s wily and crafty just adds to the potential peril.

I’m going to stick with a theory I hinted at last week: Jones and Peter are two sides of the same coin. Jones said, “You don’t know me, or what I’m capable of.” But Peter could say the same, especially in the context of these people who don’t know him. Both sides seem to be growing to trust him in their own ways, but they haven’t experienced his unique skills, whether it’s speaking Arabic (probably not that useful in this context) or reinventing/renovating/creating a new set of paired universes.

Alt-Broyles, Possible Shapeshifter, could also utter that line. We know he’s working with Jones, as does Jones (obviously), but no one else does. We know what the world used to be like, or what the other universes are like, just like Peter does—but no one else does. We know Nina is behind some plot with Olivia’s brain, but no one else does…unless Jones and Alt-Broyles do. Peter warned Olivia of the danger of driving through the gateway, but she didn’t really understand what he’d meant until she almost experienced it. The difference between knowing and really knowing or understanding seems like it will be crucial in the episodes to come. If Fringe keeps up the delightful mix of action, conversation, and really confusing universe stuff, we’ve got a lot to look forward to.

Cool:

• Jones: “Take me to your leader.”

• Lincoln Lee: “I lost a partner.”
Peter: “I lost a universe.”

• I assume Alt-Broyles is a shapeshifter. But whenever I assume anything about Fringe, I feel stupid. Who wants to bet me five bucks that he’s a person?

• Speaking of Broyles and his “alter ego”: I love the idea of the two of them having a deadpan conversation about anything. Cupcakes, unauthorized universe-jumping, whatever.

• Walter never got a white tulip. How’s that for crushing dramatic irony?

Fringe Easter Egg: Next Episode Clue 409

Every episode of Fringe contains a hidden clue that foreshadows something in the next episode. In last Fringe episode "Back To Where You've Never Been", when Peter and Lincoln cross over to the alternate universe, there is a Mohonk Teahouse on the corner.

In the Fringe episode "Enemy Of My Enemy", David Robert Jones is found mining Amphilicite at the Mohonk Quarry.

AGENT FARNSWORTH: Of all the locations he was studying, the one with the most potential for Amphilicite is located... here.
AGENT LEE: The Hudson River Valley.
AGENT FARNSWORTH: Right, and this is the map file they accessed the most on Doctor Fayette's hard drive -- the Mohonk Quarry.

Fringe Episode 4.09 Review - Clues Are Out There

It did not surprise me that David Robert Jones has ties to Nina Sharp. I cannot wait to see what her endgame is.

Enemy of My Enemy is full of subtext.

I never imagined the other Elizabeth would pay Walter a visit. If it were not for the current scenario, the same momentous meeting would only be an impossibility.

Interesting to note that the other Walter was also plagued by his own guilt and helplessness twenty-six years ago, albeit with a lot less vindication.

Well, the outcome is still the same.
I couldn't save our son then.
And I can't help him now.

Peter should rest assured that. deep down, any versions of his father is a good man.

Colonel Broyles' duplicity in regards to Jones. A slight tell, a disdain on his face when Jones asked for tea in interrogation. This tells me that he is acting under duress. Ask yourselves what could make a man betray his commander.

So... Jones is also a variable in this universe. When he succeeded in crossing over to the other side, it's plausible Peter must have been sucked through one of the holes that formed the moment he disengaged from the machine.

Random Thoughts and Meanings...

Alternate Olivia eventually broke up with Frank. And it's blue universe Lincoln finds it amusing that Olivia has a close relationship with his double. Look out, red Lincoln may have competition. Funny looking face.

Blue Lincoln shouting out "FRINGE DIVISION!" He's using their war cry.

Gene is a changed cow. There are less spots on the animal.

Alternate Astrid impressed that the man Peter is from another timeline. Cool.

The collective sneers across the boardroom table, at their Fringe Division counterparts. That was priceless. That scene also makes me wonder who had called for the accord between the universes.

Nothing gets by Broyles. That's one more thing he has in common with his alter ego. You know?

Thoughts on Continuity...

The SUV Olivia was driving when they arrive at the quarry had bullet impacts. The one severed by the dimensional portal had a clean windshield.

How did Peter retain so much about the properties of those rocks? By the time Olivia crossed over to get Peter in season 2's Over There, no one knew how William Bell crossed over.

Last Word

Just like what Secretary Bishop said last week. Not everything is as it seems.
