Magic Returns to the Fringe!

A magic Saturday to highlight Halloween Month comes to the Indy Fringe Theatre. If you have any interest in magic, this is a day you don't want you or your family to miss.

The Williams Magic Caravan of Tucson, AZ, a magic shop on wheels, is coming to Indianapolis, Oct. 15, 2012. It's going to be parked at the Indy Fringe Theatre, 719 E. St. Clair, at the intersection of Massachusetts Ave., College Ave. and E. St. Clair. Over 1,000 items of magic including magic kits, props, books, and other items will be available for sale to magicians and the public. It will be open from 1 PM to 3 PM. Following at 4:30, a magic show that will benefit the local Society of American Magicians will be presented at the Indy Fringe Theatre.

Starring Taylor Martin as Colonial magician "Rodney The Younger" it offers families a fun hour of magic, mystery, and mirth. Billed as "History with something up it's sleeve!" Taylor's show was recently featured at The Feast of the Hunter's Moon in Lafayette, IN and Marion, Indiana's Mississinewa 1812. Considered one of the finest magic shows of it's kind, you'll love seeing the old tricks, the comedy, and the history. As Rodney says, "Have you seen the new tricks? They ain't that good." The show will be introduced by S.A.M. #31 President Steve Spence. And following the show, the Caravan will have magic sets available for anyone that is interested in magic.

Tickets are just $10 for adults and $8 for anyone under 14 or over 65. The show is just one hour and will bring you magic you may never see again.

Become an Extra in a Visa Commerical

Visa Commercial looking for people of all ethnicities ages 18 and older to be extras. The pay will be between $125 - $150/day and the shoot days are as follows:

Friday 10/7 (late afternoon into evening shoot, so people MUST be available for the shoot).

IndyFringe's Technical Director Gets an Online Presence

IndyFringe Welcomes Michigan's Found Object Orchestra Internationale

Fans of found object music - the art of constructing music out of non-musical objects - are in for a treat this coming Saturday, September 24. Michigan ensemble, Found Object Orchestra Internationale, bring their talents to the IndyFringe Building starting at 8pm.

Found Object Orchestra Internationale is an eclectic electro-acoustic chamber ensemble based in Michigan consisting of musicians James Cornish-Euphonium, Trumpet and Flute, Ian Fulcher-Electronics and Trumpet and Curtis Glatter-Found Objects, Keys and Percussion. Each member of FOOI are musical veterans who have appreciation and knowledge of numerous musical styles and each wish to share their music-collectively and individually-with the world.

1-Minute Interview with Director and Producer of the Film Busking the System, Justin Morales

Playing this weekend at Indiana Landmarks Center, a new documentary called Busking the System gets four showings as part of the IndyFringe festival. Below is IndyFringeTalk's 1-minute interview the film's director and producer, Justin Morales.

What was the inspiration behind the film?

I lived in the Bronx and used to take the train into Manhattan for work.I was riding the 5 train when an older blind gentleman guided himself onto
the train with a violin bow. He propped himself up against a pole in the
middle of the car and began to play a fantastic classical melody. When he
was done he found his way off the train never seeing the people he played
for nor did he even ask for change. This incident inspired me to research
the musicians under the ground in NYC.

What drew you toward the subject of busking and street performing?

The talent is amazing and underground.

What were some of the challenges in producing the documentary?

Some of the challenges is all the research, finding your subjects than
conniving them to let us film them. The hours you have to record just to
get "good stuff". Finding the narrative... and so much more.

What can people learn from the documentary?

People can learn that there is so much more passion and talent in the world
besides American idol and the music that is force fed into our society. They can also learn that there is talent and culture right in your own backyard.

When I was in High School... - Taylor Martin, Andrea Merlyn's Book of Secrets: Volume II

1. How did you become involved in the performing arts?

My father brought home the Chipmunk Song and I sang along with it.

2. What is the most interesting part you've ever played?

The murderous transvestite in The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. Why? I got to play four characters in the show.

3. What advice would you give to young people who are interested in getting involved in the performing arts?

a) Get a thick skin for all the rejection you're going to meet.
b) Remember, it's called "show business" and only one word is "show." You're in it for the money. It's how you'll feed and cloth and insure yourself and your family. Don't sell yourself for less than what you're worth.

4. How can teens become ambassadors for the performing arts during the school year?

Teens? What about us adults who need the job?

5. Where can teens find a community of other performing artists around the city?

The Society of Young Magicians (S.Y.M.), Footlite Musicals' Young Artists group, High School theatre groups.

1. How did you become involved in the performing arts?

I started with improv in high school, went to a couple of drama camps and studied theater in college.

2. What is the most interesting part you've ever played? Why?

Playing an alternative version of myself in a friend's show. I was grounded in who I was, but had the freedom to explore.

3. What advice would you give to young people who are interested in getting involved in the performing arts?

Don't give up. If you feel your voice isn't being heard, either in shows that have already been written or just in the day-to-day, that is all the more reason to make your voice heard.

4. How can teens become ambassadors for the performing arts during the school year?

Making connections, word of mouth. I've gotten involved with various projects and theaters throughout my life, just by meeting people who invited me to join.

5. Where can teens find a community of other performing artists around the city?

If there are improv theaters that is great, because improv is open to everyone including people of any age. The more points of view, the better.

When I was in High School... - Mary Hamilton, Around The World with Cinderella

1. How did you become involved in the performing arts?

In high school I was not involved in the performing arts. The small public school I attended for eleven years had no performing arts programs of any kind. Sports? yes, but no visual or performing arts. My senior year, my school closed, so I began attending a larger school. It did not offer a drama class (band, visual arts, and chorus - yes, but not other performing arts), but did produce a junior and senior play. I had never ever imagined myself performing in any capacity, so I volunteered to help out with make-up for both productions.

Many years later, I was a children's librarian, and storytelling was an expected part of my job. It soon became the part of my job I loved best, so back in 1983 when budget cuts in the city where I worked resulted in my being laid off from the job, I decided to use my savings to work toward supporting myself through storytelling. Storytelling and teaching others about the art of storytelling (and the very different art of reading aloud -- I emphasize the difference because sometimes people assume the two arts are the same -- they are not!) has been the source of my livelihood ever since.

By the way, if your opportunities for seeing performing arts are limited, don't despair. By the time I graduated high school, I had seen exactly five live theatre productions. 1) a play I faintly remember going to see in grade school, put on by high school students. I recall a boy wearing a dress pretending to be a girl, and that's all I remember, 2) a traveling troupe of actors presenting Romeo and Juliet, 3) my aunt who went to a boarding school her freshman year of high school in a production at her boarding school, 4) the junior class play when I was a senior, and 5) the senior class play when I was a senior. That's it -- my experiences were very, very limited. So, don't let limitations stop or lack of opportunities become a permanent stopping place.

2. What is the most interesting part you've ever played? Why?

Hmm, well, I don't play parts, since I'm a storyteller. So, I've only been in one play in my whole life. If I remember correctly, the title was "Loose Ends" and I played the conservative friend of the main female character (and I can't recall their names?). Instead of playing parts, I tell stories. So, that means that most of the time on stage, I am myself, telling my audience stories (not a character who tells stories).

The only exception is a one-woman show, "Children of Richard, Rhoda, and God" in which three characters tell the story -- myself at age 17, my boyfriend Bill at age 17, and myself now. All three of those characters tell stories, which mean all three of them sometimes quickly show the audience glimpses of the other characters they talk about (whenever those other characters speak, for example, they briefly become them when they are talking).

3. What advice would you give to young people who are interested in getting involved in the performing arts?

Go for it -- look for opportunities to become involved. If you have no money, watch for free opportunities to see someone perform. Make your own decisions about what you like and don't like, and yet, when someone likes a performance you did not care for, ask them what they liked about it -- not in a challenging their opinion way, but in a satisfying your curiosity way. Finding out how and why others have opinions that differ from yours will prove a helpful performance skill as well as a useful life skill.

4. How can teens become ambassadors for the performing arts during the school year?

Show up! Go watch performers of all kinds. Thank people for their performances, and if you are performing, please remember to thank your audience for their support. When you've enjoyed a production, be sure to tell others about it so more people can have the opportunity to see it.

If you are low on funds, find out if there is any volunteer job you could do to earn a ticket to a performance you'd like to see. It never hurts to ask; you may hear "no" but you'll never hear "yes" if you don't ask. And if you do volunteer, take that volunteer job as seriously as any job you would be paid to do (because you really are being paid by the performance).

Write reviews of performances for your school newspaper, and /or write letters to the editor of your local newspaper about performance opportunities you know of that you believe others would be interested in. There's no need to be snarky; just describe the performance and tell what you liked about it, or if it was lacking what you wish had happened to improve it.

Also, if you are not finding like-minded teens at your school, check with you local public library. Many public libraries have teen programs, and this may help you locate others teens who share your interests. They are out there, but if you attend a school where sports is truly the only game going, it may take more time to find those like-minded souls. Do not give up.

5. Where can teens find a community of other performing artists around the city?

I am guessing this questions refers to Indianapolis. I live in Frankfort, KY so I would have ideas about this for teens in my town, but I don't know what to suggest here, except inquiring at public library Young Adult Departments, which I've already mentioned above.

Why IndyFringe?
The fringe is a jewel in the artistic crown of Indy. Several other cities have Fringe Festivals. But none are run as well and as much of a pleasure to perform in as iNDYfRINGE. When I was in High School... - Ty Stover, SLAMMED

1. How did you become involved in the performing arts?
It officially in church and then in middle school where I won a talent show by doing an old Shelly Berman routine. But I always knew I would be involved in show business in some way. When I was 5 I wanted to be a ventriloquist (this is before the age of the muppets) but I pronounced the word “Psychiatrist”. For entertainment my parents would call me into the room when entertaining and ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I replied “A psychiatrist!” “And what does a psychiatrist do?” “HE MAKES DUMMIES TALK!”

2. What is the most interesting part you've ever played? Why?
Though I consider myself more of a director now, I have performed in well over 100 shows from dinner theatre to national tours, guerrilla street theatre to Shakespeare and Shaw. The key to keep this all fresh is that whatever project you are currently working on HAS to be the most interesting. I need to find something you love in every project or you burn out quickly. As far as personally interesting I would say it was a production of THE FULL MONTY because I was able to work through some personal issues myself as the character (Dave) took a similar journey every performance.

Ooooops…”when I was in high school”… yeah. I think the most interesting thing I did theatrically was I went to theatre camps they totally convinced me that I was destined for this path. It was the total immersion of being a part of a company of people and working toward this common goal that really got me. Being a part of something bigger than myself.

3. What advice would you give to young people who are interested in getting involved in the performing arts?
Do it. Don’t operate in a world of “if only…” think of it as “What if? And create your own opportunities if you can’t find what your “if” is looking for.

4. How can teens become ambassadors for the performing arts during the school year?
If you are not finding what you are looking for at school or church, look to the community theatres in town. Network with other teens. There is a facebook group called “StageQuest YA - Young Artist Networking in Indy” Use it or create your own page. Ambassador means you are reaching out, creating a connection between yourself, your craft and your community.

5. Where can teens find a community of other performing artists around the city?
Support the arts, get to know what is going on in the theatrical community. Familiarize yourself with all the venues in town and their differences. Volunteer, there is not a theatre around that cannot use free labor. Stuffing envelopes, cleaning paint cans, back painting flats, sorting hardware, being a go-fer, all things that are necessary and appreciated and provide chances to learn and observe how these crazy theatre folks actually manage to put out a product. I know of a theatre festival in town that begins with an “F” that can always use an extra set of hands and feet

Talking with Rick Cousins - 'The Best Audience Ever'

During the build-up to the 2011 IndyFringe Festival, IndyFringeTalk interviewed some of the key performers to get insight into their stories, their audience and the Fringe itself. Here is what happened when we sat down with The Best Audience Ever's Rick Cousins.

If you could present your show to just one person, who would it be and why?
My dad, because it would mean he was still alive to see me acting like a silly twit...or any other way, for that matter. That's kind of a sentimental Hallmark Hall of Fame answer, but no less true for all that. I also think that a command performance for the Devil would be a shrewd move. After spending an hour with me, he's not likely to want to take me on for all eternity.

List 3 words that truly sum up your show.
"Quirky yet engaging". Or, if you're looking for three adjectives, 'offbeat', 'quirky', and 'engaging'. (Actually, I cheated--'engaging' is actually a present participle, not an adjective, but you get the general idea.)

What is the best way for theater-goers to stay informed about your latest productions?
The best way to do that is to go to Uncle Fun and Sparky Land, a website (ostensibly) started up on my behalf by a couple of characters who found their way into my work way back when: http://unclefunandsparkyland.blogspot.com/ . It's also a good place to get a sense of where my sense of humor's coming from, and to hear some things I've done over the years in the nearly-obsolescent field of radio comedy.

How does fringe theater benefit you as a theater artist?
It's a great way to work things out 'on their feet'. Fringe bridges the gap between 'legitimate' theater and more free-form types of live performance like stand-up and improv, in a way that allows you to take a text and let it evolve in its own direction.

What is the funniest line in your play?
The one that stands out is "Bear with me for a moment...I’ve just come from a master class I was teaching in Primal Scream Mime, and it ran a little overtime…there were a few more people trapped in invisible boxes for a little longer than I’d anticipated." (I'm embarrassed to say I had to look this up.)

Where do you see yourself in a year’s time?
In a mirror or any other reflective surface, same as now. Unless I've turned into a vampire...

But seriously, folks, by this time next year I'm hoping to have defended my M.A. thesis and may j-u-s-t about have time to tour this show to a few more cities, and maybe even bring a new one to Indy. I'd also like to get back on track with some short bits of cheapo animation I promised some friends of mine ages ago (so many drawings...so little time--or is that the other way around...?).

Why IndyFringe?
I came here last summer as the stage manager with Kurt Fitzpatrick for The Last Straight Man in Theatre, and the whole scene just grabbed me. I like the vibe on Mass Ave., and everybody with IndyFringe is great. They're especially understanding of the eccentricities of Canadians--it may be some sort of Commonwealth thing going on with Pauline and you, and so forth. There's also a lot of stuff for an out-of-towner to do in Indianapolis during 'down time'-- I'll be making another visit to the Indiana State museum, and will catch at least one game at Victory Field, if Indians are in town.

Jared Sherlock, a 23 year old Indiana-born illusionist, first performed at the IndyFringe festival as a 16 year old student.   A favorite of IndyFringe audiences over the years, he brings an eclectic, high energy show which will delight and amaze the entire family. This year, Sherlock fuses magic with comedy, dancing and acting in a modern-day variety show “Illusion.”

In partnership with Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St Vincent and the IndyFringe Festival Free Fringe tickets and Festival 'Backer Buttons' will be awarded to the first 130 people at three performances at The Cook Theatre, Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 North Central Avenue, Indianapolis, 46202. Sherlock grew up in Carmel, Ind. and began performing magic when he was eight years old. Since his graduation (2011) from Saint John’s University with a major in Entrepreneurship and Theater, Sherlock transitioned from student to full-time performer. He established the Minneapolis-based production company The Magic of Jared Sherlock in 2000 and continues to tour the nation with his illusion-filled act.

Sherlock makes a contribution to the community with the proceeds from each performance and will make a special performance at the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent on August 22. Sherlock previously established his own charitable foundation, ArtsNow, and is dedicated to the mission of helping people in need overcome obstacles and achieve their magical dreams.
