I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again. Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me? It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.

When angels make mistakes they’re forsaken.

Angels may not reveal themselves to mortals.

But when the mortal Rachael’s watching over is hurting, how can she stay hidden in the shadows?

Guardian angel Rachael becomes trapped with the mortal she’s been assigned to watch over. Unable to watch him suffer, she decides the only way to free him of his inner demons is to break the rules about becoming involved, revealing her true identity, and applying divine intervention. But what choice does she have? Without her help, his soul will be trapped forever. Then a stranger appears, giving Rachael reason to wonder if his is the only soul in need of saving…”

Prologue

She was a chronic worrier—

“I have a bad feeling about this, Ben.”

—and a touch melodramatic.

“This is suicide. It’s also stupid, morally wrong, and pointless. And did I mention suicide?”

Ben wasn’t listening. He was reaching a hand inside the open neck of his shirt. She’d spent enough time with him to know he was touching the cross on the necklace that had once belonged to his dad.

“Detached, that’s how you make me feel, Ben. Like I’m watching your life through a window.”

Striking up an old conversation was hardly creative, yet the feeling of not belonging with him was just as strong now. She gave a heavy, audible sigh but Ben wasn’t taking the bait. “A bubble. I live in a bubble.”

“Relax.” Ben closed his eyes as he sucked up a deep, dusty red breath like he was meditating on Mars. “Everything will be all right.”

As well as a chronic worrier and a touch melodramatic, she was also an eternal optimist. So she looked around in case she was missing something, but all she saw was proof to the contrary. She, Ben, and a few hundred others were in a convoy, crossing a desert that appeared to be empty, yet the drivers had dodged gun and mortar fire since they’d passed over the border an hour ago.

What this land must have looked like when it’d been fertile with lush, green trees and wide, blue rivers was hard to imagine, but she tried. Her eyes had closed for a second when a burst of gunfire to her right jolted them wide open again.

“We signed up for non-combat jobs, remember?” She wondered if punching him in the head would do any good.

Probably not. If her bubble-hands were too weak to smash through the invisible wall surrounding her, they’d be like wet rags against his thick skull. Plus he was wearing a metal helmet and she was likely to break more than a nail.

“We’re meant to be back home making trucks. That’s what we were promised we’d be doing. Jeez, Ben. Think about your mom.”

Perhaps he was. Perhaps many of the soldiers here were thinking about loved ones they’d left behind. Many of the men and women seated on either side of her had grave expressions, like tufts of unruly hair, peeking out from underneath their helmets. Or were they just scared?

Maybe a sense of duty impelled them to enter a war zone. Responsibility was her only motive; she certainly wasn’t here for the ambience. And she would rather have thrown herself under the truck’s heavy wheels than dodge her responsibilities. So with an dramatic sigh—in case during the past minute Ben had suddenly developed the ability to take a hint—she settled back into the role of accepting what she couldn’t change while wishing that she could.

A round of cheers sprang up from a group of soldiers at the back of the truck, a malevolent presence screaming as if newly born and was demanding to be fed. She shivered and huddled closer to Ben.

It can be the brightest day, but fill it with just one dark soul and the day is ruined.

She made a mental note to keep well clear of these soldiers. She hoped Ben was smart enough to do the same.

“I’m here to keep my homeland safe.” The tremor in Ben’s voice was at odds with his bold statement. She wanted to tell him he could’ve made trucks at home, but because his eyes were fixed on his boots she succumbed to the rhythm of the back-jarring ride across the pothole-filled road and held her breath, hoping it wouldn’t be her last.

Their convoy of flatbed trucks was carrying hundreds of troops, weapons, ammunition, Abrams tanks, armored personnel carriers, and Humvees to the compound, their base for the next six months. With any luck they’d move out faster than they were moving in. Their convoy was doing twenty miles an hour, but she felt as if ants could have passed them.

She wanted to laugh as she pictured tiny insects kicking up orange dust, flipping the bird at the drivers and shouting obscenities. Instead, she bit her lower lip. This was neither the time nor the place to flaunt her eternal optimism. Besides, she wasn’t sure she had any cheerfulness left in her.

“I still don’t see why we’re here,” she mumbled.

What made the trip seem slower, she realized, was the lack of perspective. Much like an ocean without any land mass to help judge distance, this desert seemed to stretch endlessly ahead of them. If only the drivers would go faster; it had to be harder to hit a quicker-moving target. She was tempted to grab Ben by the collar and pull him off the truck, but the heat was around a hundred degrees, and with all the gear packed on them—M-247, M-249, backpack, flak jacket, radio, helmet, goggles—it would’ve been like sprinting around inside an oven.

Sand began to whirl in all directions, marching up and down the convoy as if sizing it up to establish whether it could be swallowed whole. This was the most dangerous time for the convoy. The trucks had to slow to a crawl or risk running into each other or off the road. Their only saving grace was that the enemy was exposed to the same elements. So while the soldiers couldn’t see a thing, they also couldn’t be seen. At least that was her theory.

Time went by. Soldiers weren’t killed so everyone began to relax a little and make conversation. But when the flatbed truck passed a burned-out tank on the side of the road, everyone went quiet. Nobody could take their eyes off the ruins. Despite wanting to look away out of respect, she was enthralled.

Did everyone want to know the same thing she did? Had the tank internally combusted from the constant battering of the sun? Nice concept, but this damage had been caused by man. Judging by the looks on their faces, everyone knew that. When the eyes of the soldiers around her widened she guessed they had silently asked another question. Was this one of their tanks or the enemy’s?

They lowered their eyes and she had her answer.

“Do you think they got out before it got hit?” she asked.

Ben didn’t respond, but from the rear of the truck the loud-mouthed soldiers yelled, “Oh yeah, you’re gonna get it now, you freakin’ sons of bitches.” Cheers followed. Even if she’d known what insults to hurl at these soldiers, she reminded herself that she’d sworn moments ago to steer clear of these men. So she kept her gaze forward and her mouth shut.

Like a good soldier. A ripple of self-loathing rose and lodged in her throat. She’d never have guessed it would taste so foul.

Outside, the sand was swirling faster as though thrown about by a crèche load of bad-tempered toddlers, and pretty soon both the ground and sky were painted flame orange, crackling like an open fire. She was afraid to breathe. Soldiers pulled down their goggles to cover their eyes, but this action was a useless defense against the sand that bit into their exposed flesh.

The dust cleared, and finally, the convoy arrived at the compound. Without a word, she and everyone else began unloading the contents of the flatbed trucks—smaller trucks, enough guns to keep the war going for centuries, tanks, food, water and whatever other supplies they’d need for the next six months.

Breathing was difficult. This was the most physical work she’d performed in ages. When she stopped for a break, resentment at the lies welled inside her. Tears stung her eyes. “Forget home sweet home, this place is home sweat home.”

Each and every soldier was drenched from top to bottom from the exertion of working under the glaring sun. Their sweat filled the air; she could have sworn she was in a sauna. Optimism dripped off her forehead. She wiped at her brow and was surprised when her hand came away wet, not with sweat but something else.

No tears. At least not for herself.

After half an hour, a few companies got into the smaller trucks and disappeared, perhaps to do their hard labor in another section of the growing heat. Another hour after that, once everything had been unloaded, the company she and Ben were assigned to was ordered into one of the smaller trucks, and they too left.

A sergeant with silver hair and eyes was seated in the front. He looked the type who was too mean to have ever had a pet. For long.

“You pussies will stand guard at the hospital for the next twenty-four hours,” the sergeant bellowed. “You will each do two twelve-hour shifts, one shift inside the hospital, one outside.”

“When do we get time to shoot the enemy?” the kid next to Ben asked. For one so young his eyes were hard, like steel.

“Don’t be fooled. The enemy is out there.” The sergeant’s gravelly voice roared as loudly as the aircraft parading over their heads. “If you ladies find yourself in a threatening situation, well, you know what to do. Are you pussies prepared to protect your fellow countrymen?”

A roar of cheers engulfed the truck. If the enemy hadn’t known they were here before, they were well aware of it now.

“Shoot first and ask questions later. That’s what he means.” The kid inched his way closer toward Ben. “You ever shot a bear? They come at you even after you’ve pumped ten rounds in ’em. I’ve heard it’s the same with these bastards. You shoot ’em and shoot ’em, but they keep coming at you with guns and knives. All the while cursing at you in the Devil’s language. You got to be careful not to touch ’em either. Their blood is poison.”

“I doubt we’ll shoot anyone at a hospital.” Ben scowled and moved along the bench as best as he could without falling off the edge. The kid must have gotten the hint because he kept quiet after that.

Unaffected by the searing heat outside, the truck chugged along until it rolled up outside a hospital that had weathered grenade blasts and gunfire till it resembled a thousand-year-old relic.

For some, this was their first time on foreign soil. For others, this was simply another day at work. Yet everyone jumped off the truck and danced boxer-like on their feet as though something invisible was going to jump out from the air and snatch them.

The sky above was on the go with Apache helicopters, hellfire missiles, dust, and jet stream. On the ground was a different story. The air barely stirred. No sign of anyone or anything with a pulse, let alone the dreaded enemy. Aside from one or two civilians she could see sneaking peeks at the soldiers from around corners of shattered buildings, the street was empty. So why could she feel the distinct presence of something out there? Watching, waiting, and blistering with hatred at this invasion.

“Each and every one of you signed a contract with the U.S. Army, which means your asses belong to me,” shouted the sergeant. His eyes scanned the soldiers with no more than a passing glance, as though he already considered them obsolete. “Your mommies can’t help you now. So if any of you pussies don’t want to be here, you can kiss my red, white, and blue behind. Now secure the building and welcome to hell.”

That is, until his championship football game, when Sam accidentally links with an ancient source of energy known as the Veil and reveals his potential to become a powerful sorcerer. Sam is whisked off to Atlas Crown, a community of sorcerers who utilize the Veil as a part of everyday life. Once there, he trains beside a mute boy who speaks through music, an eternal sage who’s the eyes and ears of the Veil, and a beautiful girl who’s pretty sure Sam’s an idiot. As it becomes clear Sam’s meant for power magic-the most feared and misunderstood form of sorcery-people beyond Atlas Crown learn of his dangerous potential. An exiled group of power sorcerers are eager to recruit Sam, believing that he is destined to help them achieve their long-held goal. If they succeed, they could bring about the downfall of not only Atlas Crown. but all humankind.

PRAISE:

“I absolutely adored Masters of the Veil. It is a unique and creative read in today’s sometimes overwhelming YA market. Daniel is taking JK Rowling’s lead and putting a whole new twist on fantasy.”

-Kristin @ Better Read Than Dead

“This Book was brilliant, creative, and completely magical. If you want an amazing book to read in 2012, I would suggest you go to the bookstore and pick up a copy of Masters of the Veil.”

~Julia @Inkbitten

“I loved this book. I could list all the reasons, but there is one piece of praise I think sums up the book best. My son grabbed it as soon as I was finished reading it and hasn’t put it down since. Dan Cohen has a winner with this series.”

~Author Michelle Pickett

“Mr. Cohen has done a spectacular job on Masters of the Veil and I look forward to what comes next!”

Author Daniel A. Cohen

Daniel A. Cohen was just your average business student. Microeconomics, finance, marketing… you name it, he had to do a PowerPoint presentation on it. One dark and stormy night, he was bitten by the radioactive realization that memorizing business jargon could possibly be the most boring activity known to man.

After gaining eagle-eye vision, abs that could grate cheese, and a talent for imagining things (including his cheese-grating abs), he wrote his first novel and began his epic battle against the formidable business jargon. He continues to fight the good fight by playing saxophone and writing YA fantasy, forever hoping his Veil trilogy will help inspire others to join his cause.

Some Things are Pretty. Some Things are Black. Love is both.

[Ellie Piper]

She wanted to die. He arose from the grave. He was sent to kill her. She was trained to kill those of his kind. But fate had other plans. He searched for 119 years to find her. & There’s no way in hell he’s letting her go. Dead or Alive. They’re fated.

[Marcus Marble]

How far would you go to be with the one you love? Would you die for her? Would you kill for her? What if the only reason you’re still alive is because of her? What if the reason you came back from the dead, was to be with her? But what if your job was to kill her, but you fell in love instead? And now you’re being hunted by your own kind?

Destroy? Or be Destroyed?

-What type of research do you have to do to write your books?

Since I am currently writing about immortal beings, such as vampires and zombies, I want to be somewhat original. I’m not sure how original one can be with these concepts but when gearing up for a book, the research I do is I take out a stack of paper and I write down every single thing that has been used in these paranormal books and then I toss it in the trash and try to reinvent it or give it a new angle, which is challenging.

Vampires and Zombies have been written about too many times to even count, but I am hoping I can rebirth these ideas. I am really excited for Frankie’s Monster as I attempt to take on the Zombie genre. We will see how all of this turns out.

All else, is purely imagination.

-Which of your books is your favorite and why?

Currently, Raven in the Grave because I am loving Marcus’s narration and when I release it, you guys will see why!

-Tell us about your write process – where you write, any rituals you have and how you motivate yourself

If I’m really pumped I can write about 10,000 words in one sitting. If I’m procrastinating, I might get one pretty sentence. I write at my desk and above it hangs inspirational photographs, the cover design to my upcoming book releases, and my light up spider web. I also have meditation/Muse rocks on my desk. An ice blue one and a midnight blue one. One for day time writing and one for nightly inspired pieces.

I used to sit in a dark corner all sad and depressed that I wasn’t writing, but that didn’t yield any results. Now, Writing is like a lifeline. It’s something I must do in order to survive. I think I will keep it this way.

When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn’t going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master’s courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she has four completed Young Adult novels. If you want to know more about this quirky writer who loves romance and fantasy and everything in between, click on the link below.

If you could be anything but a writer what would you want to be?

A ballerina, or a vet. Or maybe both!

What were your favorite books growing up?

When I was in elementary school I absolutely loved The Bailey School kids books. They had titles like Vampires Don’t Wear Polka Dots, Mermaids Don’t Run Track, and Ghouls Don’t Scoop Ice Cream.

What book/book series would you love to see be made into a movie?

A lot of my favorite book series have already been made into movies, but since we’re on the subject, I wouldn’t mind if The Bailey School Kids books were made into a movie J

-What is the hardest thing about being an author?

Putting yourself and your work out there for everyone. It’s really daunting to read negative feedback or reviews from others. An author pours out their heart and soul into what they write. When someone tears their work down, it can be really painful.

What is the best thing about being an author?

Getting positive feedback. Whenever someone says they liked my novel, I feel so touched and overjoyed. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cried with happiness because of a positive comment. I know I can’t please everyone, but it means the world to me when even one person says they liked my writing.

If you had the opportunity to co-write with another author who would you pick and why?

Definitely J.K. Rowling. That would be an incredible, life-changing experience. She is unquestionably literary royalty.

- Do you prefer to write during the day or during the night?

I like writing during the day, especially if it’s rainy, foggy, or cloudy. I feel like inspiration just flows from my fingertips when the weather is stormy.

What writing pet peeves do you have?

Hmm, sometimes I’ll be in the middle of writing an intense scene and I’ll get a loud phone call that completely takes me out of the moment. I always laugh at myself for not leaving my phone locked up in a drawer or something.

Favorite Quote?

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

–Robert Frost

Tell us something about yourself you consider to be unique?

I love animals a lot and am the proud parent of two lovely (sometimes) pugs. We adopt our pets and have helped others adopt animals that need good homes. My dream is to start multiple shelters to help animals in need.

Which do you prefer? Twitter or facebook? Are you an active poster or active reader?

I’m on facebook everyday, and I love connecting with other readers, writers, and friends. You can find me on facebook as Heather Ostler Pead or on The Shapeshifter’s Secret Facebook fan page.

Anything you would like to say to the readers reading this post?

Thank you so much for your interest in The Shapeshifter’s Secret! I really hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

quick fire questions

Favorite Food?

Life cereal with rice milk.

Favorite Vacation Spot?

Orlando has Disneyworld, Harry Potter World, and Waffle House—it’s definitely my favorite vacation spot.

Favorite TV Show?

Once Upon a Time.

Favorite Paranormal? (witch, vampire, zombie etc)

Can I say Shapeshifters?

Coffee, Tea or Hot Chocolate?

I am Obsessed with Hot Chocolate!

Favorite Fruit or Veggie?

I love fresh carrot juice. When I was little, my mom told me that if I drank carrot juice I would turn into a princess—wait, is that why I started liking it in the first place??

Favorite author?

I have so many! How much time do we have???

Robert Frost, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, Sara Shepard, and Lemony Snicket are a few.

- And finally…..I have to ask….Frogs or Toads?

Haha, frogs all the way

Colors Like Memories by Meradeth Houston

Julia has a secret: she killed the guy she loved. It was an accident—sort of.

Julia is a Sary, the soul of a child who died before taking her first breath. Without this ‘breath of life’ she and others like her must help those on the verge of suicide. It’s a job Julia enjoyed, until the accident that claimed her boyfriend’s life—an accident she knows was her fault. If living with the guilt weren’t enough, she’s now assigned to help a girl dealing with the loss of her mother, something Julia is not exactly the best role model for. If she can’t figure out a way to help her, Julia will lose her position in the Sary, something she swore to her boyfriend would never happen.

From now until May 23rd Colors Like Memories is just $1.99.

I’ve never been a big fan of talking about myself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about me:

I’m a California girl. This generally means I talk too fast and use “like” a lot.

I have my doctorate in molecular anthropology. Translation: I sequence dead people’s DNA and spend a whole lot of time in a lab, which I love.

I’ve been writing since I was 11 years old. It’s my hobby, my passion, and I’m so happy to get to share my work!

My other passion is teaching. There’s nothing more fun than getting a classroom of college kids fired up about anthropology!

If I could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because I’m terrified of heights.

Victoria Johnson loves her life. She’s her own boss in a quaint beachside town, and has great friends who keep her grounded. If only they knew who she really is: an heiress to an ancient race who possesses astonishing superhuman powers. It’s Victoria’s duty to restore her clan of Light Hunters to their former glory by choosing the perfect mate. In Christopher Sombrosa, she just may have found him. Strong, smart, and successful, Christopher exudes a powerful energy. Their connection is sensual, irresistible-and forbidden.

A member of the Shadow Hunter clan, Christopher has defied his own father to lead his people away from affliction and violence. Yet he cannot ignore his duty to carry on his ancient bloodline. Stunningly beautiful and brimming with an erotic life force, Victoria is everything Christopher ever hoped for in a mate . . . but as a Light Hunter, she’s his mortal enemy. Together, they could unite their warring tribes. But murderous factions on both sides don’t want peace-and they’ll stop at nothing to keep light and darkness apart forever . . .

What inspired you to become a writer and did you always know you would write?

I wrote my first book in the fifth grade when my teacher assigned a class project. It was a romance and I knew from that moment that I wanted to be a writer. I kept on writing through high school, college and law school and when my daughter was born, I decided I had to show her that it was important to follow your dreams. That’s when I went to work trying to get published.

Did you have any favorite authors growing up? Can you tell us a few?

I loved the Bronte sisters with all their angst and I also loved Ian Fleming and the James Bond series. I guess that explains why I write what I write. LOL!

Who are some of your favorite authors now and do you have a favorite?

I have so many favorites, like my Dangerous Women friends, Donna Grant, Jennifer Haymore, Lisa Renee Jones and Cynthia Eden. But I also love JD Robb (aka the fabulous Nora)!! Love the IN DEATH series.

When you’re not working, what are your hobbies/interests?

Not working? Hmm. I am such a Type AAA I am always doing something. But I do take time to read, take long strolls on the beach or boardwalk and do some crafty things, like the memory boxes that I am giving away in my May contest and the Brenda Novak auction.

What does a typical writing day look like for you?

I write on the train going to and from work and then write 3 or 4 hours on the weekend. I try to stick to that schedule all the time.

If you could travel to any place be it real or fantasy, where would you go and what would you do there?

I would so love to go to Machu Picchu or Chichen Itza. It would be so amazing to see those historical places and how the ancient people lived.

Do you listen to music when you write? If so who do you listen to?

I don’t listen to music, but I do watch movies. I usually pick movies that fit my mood.

What inspired you to write the Sin Hunters series?

There are so many cultures that believe in the existence of life forces in people and nature, like Chi or people who practice Rieke. The ancient Mayans honored the sun when it rose and I thought, what if people can draw energy from the sun and other living things? Use it for all kinds of cool powers? That’s how the mythology for the Sin Hunters was born.

Do you have a favorite character from the series? Who?

That’s a tough one. I still love Bobbie, but Ryan has really really grown on me.

Can you tell us anything about any future books in the Sin Hunters series? I’m dying to know who’s next, please tell me it’s Sammie?!?!

OMG, you don’t want to spoil it do you? So I’ll spill that the heroine in THE SHATTERED will be Sammie, but I won’t say who will be the hero right now.

Thank you so much for visiting today! I do hope you’ll come back when the next book releases!

Thank you so much for letting me visit! I will definitely be back to talk about some of my future releases with you!

When seventeen-year-old Diana recognizes an elderly priest in a video on YouTube, she realizes that reincarnation is real and that she’s been alive before! Every night in her dreams, she relives her past learning that it’s kill or be killed. Now a bishop at the Vatican whom she saved in another life calls on her once more. She is needed to help defeat evil within the catacombs of Rome. But when she arrives in Rome, she meets Alexander – the man of her dreams! Through the centuries she has loved him…betrayed him…been killed by him. Will she give him another chance or this time will she strike first

Diana is having nightmares of herself being killed in various horrible ways and can’t sleep. Each dream takes her back in time to a life she lived before and she sees how she died in that life. It is very interesting to see how the author had woven in history into the novel to give it a different spin. I love reading these dream flashbacks so we learned more of the history between Diana and Alexander. A story of reincarnation and love. Anger and Betrayal. A great first book in what I hope turns into a series.

In the 1990s, I began teaching adults to use computer software, hardware, and networking. After several years, my clients became younger and younger until I found myself tutoring high school dropouts to pass the GED. I found working with at-risk teenagers so rewarding that I changed my undergraduate major to Education.
Upon graduating from the University of South Alabama with a B.S., I began teaching high school history and continue to teach history classes online. I now live in rural Missouri with my two kids, two dogs, two cats, and father.
