A New Week!

What are your plans for the week? It's supposed to be fairly warm here so I'm hoping to finish up some gardening projects and decorate the shoppe for Spring. I'm still having a hard time calling it a shoppe, mostly because no one has been there to actually "shop". Maybe the warm weather will bring some folks out and into the little shed this week. If not, then I'm going to have find other venues to take this show on the road!

I'll be planting some lettuce this week too. My romaine has bolted (what we didn't eat) and I feel the need to play in the dirt. I just can't wait for Spring (have I mentioned that?). I'm also thinking of planting some greens too. I think I could exist on salad and cooked greens, I just adore them!

So planting and puttering seems to be what I'll be up to. What's on your list?

Weekend Around The Cottage

Good morning! How's your weekend going? Mine has been pretty busy so far. I managed to clean the chicken coop yesterday and fluffed up things a bit in there. The girls have begun to lay again and we couldn't be more thrilled! The fresh eggs are delicious, so much tastier than store bought. These girls do more than give us fresh eggs though, they are a constant source of entertainment! On Thursday, two of them were sitting on the ground and jumped up as I unlatched the coop door, only to reveal that one of them had laid an egg on the ground and was sitting on it. Too funny!

Today my plan is to fluff up the shoppe and and place some of the Spring items out there. It needs to warm up a bit before I venture out, my deck is completely frosted over. This afternoon I'm planning on working on the new herb bed some more, getting it ready to add manure and compost. The herb bed I created in the front of the shoppe will have to be moved. I knew in advance that it would get rain run-off from the roof, (that's part of the reason I placed them there) I just didn't realize that it was going to completely pound them out of the ground, roots and all. You live, you learn!

Is It Just Me?

Or are there other folks out there who's glad that the holidays are over? I'm not a scrooge, just tired. I can't help it, I always look forward to Christmas, I really do but then I'm ready for Spring to be sprung. I'm going to try to get some seed starter this week, finances allowing, and get started with some planting. I'm also planning on doing a little digging of new beds this week. Not tilling but removing the sod. Thanks to a friend of mine, I now have the perfect tool!

Hey don't laugh! This works great for removing sod!

I have to run and get some supper going of some sort. Anyone else get tired of deciding what to make?

A Year In Blogging...

I have Spring on my mind, can you tell? Every year after Christmas I'm like this:

If it isn't going to snow, then let's just move on to Spring. After all what good is the cold if there isn't snow to go along with it? Not much in my opinion.

However, living among peach farmers you learn quickly that we need a good cold snap for the peaches to produce properly and to kill out some of summer's pests.

I'm good with that since I'm fond of peaches and my farming neighbors and I don't like an abundance of buggy type things...

Now on to the new year...

Have you reviewed the last year in your life? How do you feel about it? Was it a good one for you?

I sincerely hope so!

2012 was an okay year for me, I've had better and the good Lord knows I've certainly had worse. I've poured myself into trying to get a little business going and honestly it hasn't proven to be very lucrative. I'm hoping for things to get better. Really. Soon.

I hope that this will be a better year for all of us!

Stay safe this New Year's Eve whatever your plans are.

JD and I will be right here at the cottage, cooking steaks that a couple of friends of ours gave to us, after which we'll probably fall asleep before midnight. Getting up at five in the morning isn't conducive to being awake at midnight!

Christmas Gifts And Goodies!

I've been meaning to post this for days but since I've mastered procrastination I've put it off until now. Christmas with JD's family was wonderful but way too short. We celebrated with them on Christmas Eve morning but had to rush out after opening gifts since JD had an appointment in Spartanburg. I adore JD's family, his precious mother and her husband, his wonderful brother and equally wonderful sister in law, his four lovely and sweet daughters and the oldest daughter's new fiance! Yes, that's right, JD's oldest daughter is now engaged! All we can say is "yay" for them, they are absolutely perfect for one another! If you would like to read their story, just click here. It's a great story that I love hearing them tell.
I'd also like to share some of the gifts I received from JD's family this year. I loved and appreciated everything so very much and wish that I had the funds to reciprocate. Maybe the coming year will be better to me financially and I'll be able to do just that! Nothing would make me happier!

Becoming A Minimalist...

Can you believe this mess? What in the world happened? I don't really have to ask, I know all too well exactly what happened. I happened. Between getting the shoppe cleaned, painted and decorated, housework and yard work around the cottage, cooking, making items to sell and hand making Christmas gifts (gosh this sentence is long and no, I'm not finished with it yet) I just simply didn't put anything back into it's proper place. I'm bad that way...

As I posted last Spring, I hauled car load after car load to the local Hospice thrift store and yet I can't seem to miss a thing. Still I'm finding things to paint, repurpose and sell. I'm also finding things that I simply no longer care for and have decided to sell those items as well. I might as well sell them rather than leave them for someone else to sell after I'm gone. Not that I'm planning on going anywhere real soon, just sayin' "I bought the jadeite pieces, I might as well enjoy the profits", right?

Looking at the mess in the photo above has caused me to realize that I can make do with much less home decor. I like pretty things but I am so fickle when it comes to color that I need not ever purchase anything else that isn't white. At the end of the day I'll only repaint it white or as I'm doing now, sell it...

So after taking all of the Christmas decor down I immediately began to put other decor away as well and I'm thinking that eventually most of that will make it's way out to the shoppe too. It's just time to declutter, no two ways about it. By the way, I have started cleaning up the craft ~~pigstye~~ room. It's coming together very nicely. Until I begin work on Valentine's Day goodies...

Meet Fluffy Boo-Boo...

Previously known as Georgiana, Georgi, Georgi Girl and several other aliases but since Wednesday afternoon she's been called Fluffy Boo-Boo. She's totally ignoring me here (as usual), getting some grooming finished up.

Now on with the story. Why has JD named her Fluffy Boo-Boo? Well, it ain't a pretty story but here goes. On Wednesday afternoon I was doing some laundry. I loaded the dryer with about ten pieces of delicates, not a bunch of towels. I turned the dryer on and it made the most atrocious sound I've ever heard from a dryer. Like I was drying tractor tires. My first thought was, great the dryer's broken. I opened the dryer door and to my complete horror out jumped Georgianna. I freaked out to say the least! All of this took place in less than thirty seconds, thank goodness...

She ran into the den with me right behind her, apologizing profusely, trying to soothe her (and me).

JD asked what had happened and I told him the horrible story. He just laughed that gentle chuckle of his and asked:

Are you okay Fluffy Boo-Boo?

She's fine, doesn't seem to have any sore spots (based on the way she runs throughout the cottage) and is eating well. Half a jar of treats and much loving later I think she's going to be fine. Before you judge, just understand that this completely unraveled me. To. The. Core.

Will I make sure she isn't in there every time I go to dry laundry?

You bet your sweet dryer sheet I will!

Plowin' and Chowin'

Okay, I've done some of the plowing for the new herb beds and got the lavender planted. Tonight I will be chowing for sure, I'm starving! Above is the hand plow I used. Mr. M. a friend of mine gave this plow and originally I intended to use it as a prop outside of the shoppe. He didn't use it and didn't have anywhere to store it and I literally jumped at the chance to have it for my own. Yesterday I played around with it to remove some weeds from the existing herb bed and I was instantly smitten with it! You can't imagine how well it works on removing the top layer of sod from the ground. That's when I decided to use it to dig the new bed and it worked wonderfully!

I got the lavender in the ground today since it's supposed to rain tomorrow. Luckily I can be right outside the shoppe while I'm working on the gardens.

I also get to let the chickens out of the coop while I'm working out there. First only Mignon ran out while the other three watched her from inside.

Then Flossie and Lula Belle joined in on the hen party.

I guess they didn't invite Mabel. Poor lil thing. They never invite her. Seriously, she never leaves the coop. She'll stand there and watch from the ledge of the door but she ain't leavin'. Anyone have any theories on this? Other than the fact that maybe she's just (sorry I can't help it) chicken...

I'm Back!

Did ya miss me yet? I didn't think so, but I've missed ya'll! Two or three weeks ago (who can remember when time flies as fast as it does) I discovered that I wasn't able to post photos on this blog any longer. The lil thingie thing said that my 1 GB for photos was full up the the rim. Soooo...
I decide that I'll just scrap it all, archive the blog and relay messages through the blog's Facebook page. Yep, I even posted that those were my intentions. Now mind you, I did go to Picasa and delete like five hundred photos, hoping to be able to post photos again, but ah, NO. Still no space until...
Until I posted that I was archiving the blog (I've deleted that post). Two days after that announcement and POOF! Suddenly I'm able to post photos again! That's about par for my life. A day late and a dollar short. Anyhoo, for now I'm back, we'll see how it goes.
I have lots of catching up to do picture wise. I hope y'all are having a great weekend filled with peace and joy!

Really Easy Baked Chicken Fajitas

Finally I got enough photos deleted from this blog to be able to post more. Yesterday I posted this recipe on the blog's Facebook page and thought I'd post it here for those who don't follow there. It really is easy and so good, perfect for a Saturday supper, so here ya go, hope you enjoy!

This recipe is from http://www.sixsistersstuff.com/. I found it on Pinterest one day and decided that it would definitely be for supper that night since it was super easy and looked delicious. I've been making fajitas for years but had never thought of baking them instead of making them on the stove top. I have to tell ya, this recipe did not disappoint. I didn't make it exactly like theirs, but close enough. I kind of blended my usual seasonings with their technique and voila! Hope you'll give it a try this weekend!

The team members:

1 1/2 ounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 medium onion, sliced into large chunks

1 bell pepper

freshly sliced jalapenos or 1 small can green chilies

4 tablespoons canola oil

1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder

2 teaspoons cumin 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Mix 2 tablespoons of the oil, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, oregano and salt in a small bowl. Set aside until later.

Spray a 9 x 13 casserole dish with non-stick spray. Place the chicken into the casserole, drizzle with the 2 tablespoons of tablespoons of oil and salt and pepper to taste. Bake for 20 minutes, turn and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until chicken is done.

Remove the chicken from the oven and shred it with two forks

Add the vegetables and the oil/spice mixture and toss to coat. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes or until the vegetables are just tender.

Serve on warmed flour tortilla shells with salsa, sour cream or your favorite condiments for fajitas. Serve yours first, that way you'll be sure to get some before the others dig in! Just kidding...

The Shoppe Is Ready! I've been out there today adding the items I've been working on. It's been pretty much getting up around four or five in the morning and working on things to sell, make breakfast, more work, make lunch, more work, laundry, cleaning, more work, make dinner, clean the kitchen again, more work and finally falling asleep around nine or ten. Decorating The Shed...

Well, it's about finished. It's been months of cleaning and more cleaning and plenty of painting, but it's finally time to decorate! (A stomach virus ruled my life last week so not much was accomplished.) I've moved some furniture out to the shed (still can't bring myself to call it a shoppe) and I've begun to take some of the things I've made out there. For days I've gone out there to putter around and try to bring it together. I have been experiencing a bit of "decorator's block". Yesterday I finally figured out the reason for this...
Along with the items I made I also had some gently used Christmas decor I wanted to sell. These decorations from Christmas Past were definitely jinking up what was supposed to be my "happy" place. I don't really like traditional Christmas colors, you know like red, green, gold or cobalt blue. Uh no...
Give me the vintage colors of pale pinks, aquas, silver and my favorite color of all, white. If my whole cottage could be white (and it will be one day) I would be thrilled. I do become obsessed with different palettes of pastels from time to time but I'm so fickle that it only takes about a week or two before I'm dreaming of whites again. Just wondering if any of you have this same dilemma of if it's just me?...
Back to the shed. I finally decided to take the decor that was making me walk around with a frown out of the shed and price them really low so hopefully they'll fly out of my life for-evah. I guess you're wondering if I don't like those colors how I ended up owning these things? Maybe, maybe not, but here's the reason. My ex-mister really liked traditional. And that's all I have to say about that.
I'm so glad that JD doesn't give a tiny rat's patoot about anything to do with decorating! "That looks nice" is his total contribution to decorating dialogue and I only get that if and when I ask. Love it.
So I'll be going back out there today and hopefully doing a little more arranging and thankfully JD's two oldest daughters will be here on Friday and will have some input. I'm hoping to unofficially open up shop on Friday, we'll see. I have a little more painting to do way up high behind the shelf but I need some help with some heavy items up there. I do okay on ladders but I'm thinking I won't push my luck on trying to move those things down alone. I'm also very spastic so I don't have a lot of room for playing around...

Finally...

Happy Monday to everyone! I hope your week is off to a good start. I know mine is because with only a few touch ups and the painting to be done over the long shelf in the shed, it's ready to decorate!

I finished the ceiling and floor this weekend and I'm extremely pleased with the results...

I have to tell ya, the ceiling painting just about did me in. I still can't look up without feeling an ache in my neck and shoulders...

There are a few places on the floor that I'm going to use Kilz on and touch up with more paint today. After that I'm going to start moving in and decorating. I'll worry about painting over the shelf after that. I think I deserve to put that on the back burner for a couple of days until I do a little playing with the decor, don't you? This project feels like it has gone on forever, but when you're working alone on most of it that's just how it goes. Slowly. Of course JD did the wiring and the window, but other than that it was just moi that unloaded the shed, cleaned and cleaned some more and painted. That's okay though, I like a challenge though I don't care to be this challenged again for a long time. Lol...

I'll take some more pictures today after I do a ~~little~~ a lot of moving things from the cottage to the shed and arranging. I'm hoping all of you will have some input on the decor, whether it's that you like it or you would do something different, let me hear from you!

Shed Update!

I'm trudging along with the paint. Still. I'm not complaining, well yeah I think I am. I'm just ready to be done. The walls are finished, Now on to the ceiling and the floor after that. I actually enjoy painting, but I'm way over the joy of the new paint and ready to get finished and decorate it!!! Patience isn't my thing...

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like...

A shed. That with a lot more hard work might turn into a little rustic country shoppe...

I've been a slacker in blog world here lately. It's been house work in the mornings, shed work all afternoon, then making dinner and crocheting (Christmas gifts) in the evenings for weeks now. All of this has taken a bit of oomp-a out of me and anything that I think you all may find interesting... So simply because this shed is my life at the moment, I'm sharing photos of the window that JD is working on. Windows are interesting, right?

He carefully measured, then made the cut and is moving one of the studs. I helped. Okay I handed him thingies and tools...

He asked for me to bring the sledgehammer from his vehicle. I was so proud that I found it in less than thirty seconds and rushed back to hand him my find. Turns out that I handed him wedge back hammer instead (whatever that is). He then went to retrieve the other hammer for himself.

Paint, paint and more paint and I still have the ceiling to go. Yay!

Hopefully he'll finish the window today and I'll be painting again. I can't wait to be finished with all of the painting so that I can begin to decorate and fill the shed with the goodies that will make it a shoppe!

Yes, this is JD crocheting a scarf for himself. I love the color of yarn he chose. And yes, real men DO crochet. He asked me to show him how, I obliged and after a couple of days practicing on some old yarn, he had it down and was ready for his own yarn and needle. He's doing really well I have to say. I'll try to get a couple of photos here soon of the things I'm working on.

Okay, that's been my life for weeks now and today I'll start the grind over again and one day in the not too distant future things will come together and my dream shoppe will happen.

I pray...

Pumpkin Carving At The Cottage!

On Friday JD's two youngest daughters came over and brought pumpkins with them for all of us to carve. We had ham sandwiches first and then it was on, what a fun time!

JD sometimes refers to the girls as one, two, three and four. The photo above is of number four, hard at work with her carving.

I thought it was funny that they chose to place the pumpkins on the hood of their car. All four of JD's girls are just plain fun and we missed numbers one and two joining in on this!

What was I doing while they were carving? Taking pics of course. I did clean the 'guts' out of one and scooped them clean on the inside though. Did you know that a plastic ice cream scoop works great for that chore? It does! It's sharp and makes it easy to scoop all the junk out. Just sayin'...

After the carving was over number three napped on the sofa with JD. And number four who is taking cosmetology classes at the local vocational school curled my hair and styled it. I wish I had taken a photo of it before I messed it up. She really has a knack for the styling thing. I love getting my hair curled! Thanks to JD and the girls for a fun filled afternoon!

Cute Shed Inspiration...

Happy Friday! What are your plans for the weekend? Whatever they are I hope you all have a fun safe and peaceful one! I'll be here at the cottage working on the ~~blasted~~ lovely little shed out back. JD got it wired yesterday so now I can vacuum more easily than before. Until now I had to run an extension cord when ever electricity was required. Thank you JD! He'll be installing a window next week and I can hardly wait for that, mostly so that I'll get a cross breeze...

As I work along tackling the paint on the walls, removing the ten thousand nails from the wood work that were used by the previous owner to hang things and praying yellow jackets stay outside where they belong, I try to keep these cute sheds in my mind to keep me inspired and motivated...

I keep telling myself that hopefully someday soon my little place will resemble these adorable places....

Love the painted floor on this one. I know it's coming, I'm going to have to paint the floor of the shed to get the look I'm after. It's never ending I tell ya...

Notice the doors and the bunting on the one above. JD, can you make these doors? He isn't listening now. I am going to have to do something about a screen or glass door, yesterday a bird flew just inside but gratefully changed it's mind. A scared bird could wreak havoc in a matter of seconds...

Precious! I would love to have a tiny place like this to ~~hide~~ sew. With heat. And air. And a tiny fridge filled with my favorite snacks. And a television. And a sofa.

And no one could find me, except JD. He's quiet so he would be allowed...

New Herb Beds!

Finally I have one of the herb beds, dug, composted and planted. Lucky for me I found the herbs for one dollar each at the Hendersonville Tailgate Market. That's at least one third of what I normally pay for them and I really appreciate getting them for that. By the way if you live in or around this area, the Balson family will be at the market for one more Saturday and they had a nice selection of herbs to choose from. I got tarragon, thyme, sage and some new mints.

The mint pictured above it lavender mint and it does not disappoint. It truly smells like lavender!

This is Scotch mint and I adore it, it's much brighter smelling than most mints. I also got some apple mint at Padula's plants near Greer, SC last week. I'm planning on finishing up painting and finally decorating the shed this coming week. I'll keep you up to date with photos. \

Fabulous Home Made Soaps!

I have to tell you that I've never found anything that will remove onion odors from my hands until now. Remember the little soap that Danielle gave me from her Palmetto Bloggers meet up? The one from GoodDaySunshineStore.com? It does the trick, no kidding. Last night I chunked up some onions for fajitas and eyed the little soap as I was washing up and decided to use it instead of just picking it up and taking in the divine fragrance. I had already washed with regular dish detergent but the onion persisted. After washing with the soap one time the odor was gone. Folks please take a look at their website. I adore the scent of the soap and plan on ordering some and candles from them soon. I want my house to smell like that soap. I want everything to smell like that soap!

Scrap Metal And Whitewashing...

Happy Friday! I'm still working away on the shed. More painting is what's on deck for me today. I wouldn't mind it so much if it were making a huge difference, but it's looking more like whitewashing than painting. Sheesh...

I'm also going to take a ladder out there and try to drag that steel post or whatever it is down from the shelf. After that I plan on dragging it and the box springs to the front yard and placing a sign on them for someone to please take. Thankfully there is a scrap metal buyer just down the road and truckloads of metal go by here frequently. Hopefully someone will take advantage of them. Of course if I didn't want anyone to take it they would've stolen them already. Don't know why it works that way but it often does...

After sitting here writing about it, I'm suddenly depleted of the energy it will require to drag box springs and big steel hunk around the house. Maybe I'll just put a sign in the yard and let the folks who want the stuff do the dragging? Yep, I think so...

Okay, enough about me and the lunacies that run through my mind. What are y'all doing this weekend? Tell me what your plans are! Spook houses? Planting mums? There are so many fun things to do this time of year!

Getting Closer...

Well it's a tiny bit closer to looking like a little something, but I still have a long way to go on the shed. On the days we've had good weather, I've been out there cleaning and going through Christmas decor from years past. Most of it has only been used one time and was still in the original packaging. Some of it was never used.

It really isn't clear what's on this shelf so I'll explain. It's my son's Lionel train set. I've loved that thing as much if not more than he ever did and hope to use it for display in the shoppe. Hope I can get it figured out, I'm not really good at putting things together... I'm also not good at lifting huge iron bars down from the shelf either. I can't help but wonder what in the world that thing was doing up there in the first place. I inherited it with the cottage. I'll take a pic of it when/if I get it down.

I got one of the trees out and started putting it together. Looking forward to having it lit and decorated. Love the old sled and planning on using it for display. I've had that thing forever!

Wonder how I can use the old iron bed?

And yes, I have finally started painting. This is what two coats did, looks more like a white wash than paint. I definitely have my work cut out for me but I can do it. I just need at least two more of me....
