Unique Itinerary: Windstar from Athens to Rome

Few places on this earth can match the breathatking beauty of the Greek Islands. White-washed houses adorned with sky-blue roofs, narrow streets, and royal blue seas have combined to make this one of the most popular cruise destinations on the planet. It's Friday, and that means it's time for our Cruise Photo of the Week.

This week, we figured it was appropriate to feature some photographs of Holland America Line's 2003-built Oosterdam. Just yesterday, the line announced it would deploy the popular Vista-class ship to Australia during the winter (summer in Australia) 2012-2013 cruise season, resulting in a 25% increase in overall capacity in the region which has exploded in popularity in recent years.

Carrying just under 2,000 passengers, this will be the first time a Vista-class ship has ventured to Australia, and the first time Oosterdam has left the Pacific Coast since spending a season in Europe in 2009. For most of her career, she has stuck to the Mexican Riviera run from San Diego during winter, and operated roundtrip sailings on Alaska's Hubbard Glacier route from Seattle during summer.

Holland America even plans to open a dedicated office in Sydney to serve the ever-growing Australian cruise market, and both North Americans and Aussies alike have reason to be excited about this recent deployment decision.

So to round off this first week in March, we present: the Oosterdam.

Focus On...Crown Princess

Crown Princess is arguably one of the most successful ships ever built by Princess Cruises. Constructed in 2006 at the Fincantieri shipyards near Venice, Italy, she is an evolution of the design that started back in 1998 with the launch of Grand Princess.

Each subsequent ship in the Grand Class has seen its own subtle and not-so-subtle changes. Golden Princess, built in 2001, boasted a new, elegant atrium design.

Built in 2003 and 2004 at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard in Japan, Diamond and Sapphire Princess saw the repositioning of Skywalkers Nightclub from its elevated perch down to the uppermost deck, and a reconfigured aft pool.

Also in 2004, Princess returned to Italian builder Fincantieri to construct Caribbean Princess, which saw a return to the original Grand Class design, but with an additional deck of balcony staterooms and a new feature: a gigantic LED screen suspended above the midship pool called Movies Under the Stars. Unique to Princess at the time, this innovation has been widely adopted by many other lines since then.

While each of these ships has a popular following in its own right, it was in 2006 with the launch of the Crown Princess that Princess Cruises really struck gold. Crown Princess boasted an external profile that could best be described as Caribbean Princess meets Sapphire Princess.

Skywalkers was once again moved down, and an attractive new Aft Terrace was developed. Movies Under the Stars was refined and enhanced, and another Caribbean Princess feature, the open-air relaxation lounge known as The Sanctuary, was added. A small fee is required to use this area, which is well worth it.

But the real changes were saved for the Crown’s interior design. She sported an amazing new atrium space, known as the Piazza. Decorated in marble and elegant woods, this area became an incredibly popular spot for passengers, thanks to its comfortable seating, live and varied entertainment, and the plethora of public rooms that surrounds it.

to the International Cafe.

The International Café serves up specialty coffees and light snacks throughout the day and night. During the afternoon, waiters come around the area, offering passengers an assortment of cookies with milk. Service is remarkably attentive for a ship this size, and crew members make a special effort to get to know guests.

Also adjacent to the Piazza is Vines, Princess’ new wine and sushi concept. It’s also oddly under-utilized, though on a recent Crown Princess cruise it was gaining in popularity. A wide selection of wines by the glass and bottle are offered, and can be paired with some excellent sushi or sashimi – some of the best we’ve had onboard a ship. Not to your liking? Why not sample the Spanish-style Tapas?

After two Crown Princess voyages, this is still one of my favorite areas aboard for its central Piazza location, cozy atmosphere, and fantastic service. Did I mention it's not crowded?

One deck up are the ship’s boutiques, and while bottlenecks do occur here, they seem to flow better than on other vessels, and can be avoided by simply ascending or descending the Piazza stairs.

Ascending another deck is the popular Crooner’s bar. With one half bordering the beautiful atrium, this is a tremendous place to enjoy a nightcap and listen to the live pianist. The only downside? It’s not nearly large enough for how popular it can be, particularly when a show empties out. But the atmosphere is one of our favorites aboard any ship, and the Martini list is fantastic.

Other new areas include the Crown Grill specialty steakhouse, and Sabatini’s Italian restaurant all the way aft and high atop Deck 16. The Crown Grill serves, as you might imagine, all manner of steak and seafood, while Sabatini’s is a multi-course delight that is served best if you haven’t had lunch – believe us, it’s a lot of food!

Adjacent to Sabatini’s is another lounge that instantly won us over: Adagio’s. It’s high and aft location ensures that most people never find it, which seems to be how the passengers and crew like it. Done in dark woods with plenty of curved walls and large windows, the martini menu here is highly customized (try the one with champagne over shaved ice!) , and the selection of fine spirits is the best on the ship.

A pianist serenades whomever happens to be in the room, and the big, plush couches and comfortable chairs ensure you won’t want to get up for some time. Even just writing this makes me wish I was back there right now, drink in hand, looking out at the ocean. Bright and airy during the day, Adagio’s is best experienced at night.

Other hallmarks that have made this class of ship such a success are also present. Rather than having one large, imposing dining room, Princess opted to have three smaller ones, two of which provide the line’s Anytime Dining concept, and one located in its own section near the stern providing a more traditional, fixed-seating dining alternative.

While the dine-when-you-want concept is hit or miss on many mainstream lines, Princess has it down to a fine science. Even when requesting a private table for two, wait times were never much beyond ten minutes. Should you encounter a wait for a desired table, you’ll be give a pager that functions in the atrium, allowing you to enjoy the pre-dinner entertainment or have a drink.

The only area that truly represents a problem on Crown Princess and the entire Grand-class is her main theatre, the aptly-named Princess Theatre. Located all the way forward, this theatre is one of the only public rooms that hasn’t seen any major evolution; it is identical right down to the fabric on the chairs. It also only has seating for about a third of the ship, which means guests start queuing for a 7pm show at 6:15pm. It’s an odd miss for a ship that has so many excellent design choices.

Together with her sisters Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess, and near-sisters, Crown Princess offers an excellent cruise vacation for those who like their ships big, but without losing the intimate feel of a smaller vessel.

Silversea Adds Complimentary Business Class Air to Select Voyages

Silversea Cruises upped the ante Monday by announcing that it would be offering complimentary roundtrip Business Class airfare on select Northern Europe and Mediterranean voyages this summer, plus $1,000 Onboard Spending Credits.

on select sailings this summer.

The line is already widely known for providing free economy-class roundtrip airfare with many of its itineraries, and the value represented by including Business Class airfare makes the long-haul flights from North America to Europe look very attractive indeed.

But is it worth the price of admission?

In a word: yes.

We picked a random itinerary – Silver Cloud's July 20th Southampton to Copenhagen itinerary - and used Kayak.com to find available business class airfare options. Roundtrip airfare from Vancouver, BC to London’s Heathrow Airport on July 19, and returning July 30 from Copenhagen showed a lowest price of $3,848 USD per person, utilizing Air Canada and Brussels Airlines.

From there, prices only increased.

For a 10-day cruise that’s priced at $6,276 per person, that’s a heck of a deal. Plus, the line throws in its generous $1,000 Onboard Spending Credit, which can be used for shore excursions, spa appointments, or perhaps a degustation dinner experience in the line’s signature Le Champagne onboard restaurant – one of the few extra charges aboard Silversea ships.

Consider this: a 10-day voyage on a mainstream ship can run almost as much when you throw the airfare in. A comparable stateroom on Emerald Princess's July 18, 11-night sailing roundtrip Copenhagen is $3,463 per person. Kayak shows rountrip economy class airfare from Vancouver aboard KLM for the least expensive price of $1,632, bringing the total vacation cost to $5275 per person.

If $1,001 is all that separates luxury from mainstream, business from economy, that's a good value.

Hapag-Lloyd to Debut Columbus 2 Next Year

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises announced Monday that its COLUMBUS would depart the fleet a year earlier than scheduled, in May 2012. She will be replaced by Oceania Cruises Insignia, which will join the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet next May, rechristened as COLUMBUS 2.

Larger and with a capacity of 698 guests, COLUMBUS 2 will allow Hapag-Lloyd Cruises to add more diversity to its itinerary offerings while at the same time enhancing the onboard experience for its guests. COLUMBUS 2 is also larger, at 593 feet in length.

COLUMBUS will carry out her published 2011-2012 World Tour schedule as planned, departing the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet on May 7, 2012 in the port of Nice, France. Only two previously announced cruises departing after this date will be scrapped, and passengers booked on the affected voyages will be given the option to switch to a new itinerary.

The Officers and crew of COLUMBUS will be transferred over to COLUMBUS 2.

Focus On...Gratuities 2011

For most of us, the last day of our cruise should be a chance to cherish the days that have come before; to exchange information with new-found friends and have that final breakfast onboard before setting out for cars, buses and airplanes.

The last day of the cruise is also when the majority of us will have to settle our onboard accounts - and that means taking care of the gratuities, or onboard service charges.

When we first prepared our Focus On...Gratuities article last April, we were surprised not only by some of the results, but by how difficult it was to find detailed information on some cruise line websites. Since it's almost been a year since the article was last published, we thought it was time to update the list. Many lines have changed or increased their gratuity policy in the last year, so expect to see some new information.

So who charges what? Let's review:

Azamara Club Cruises
In keeping with Azamara's move into more upscale territory, gratuities are now included in your cruise price. The only exception to this is gratuities for spa staff, which will be added at 18% to your spa bill.

Carnival Cruises
$10 per guest, per day (this must be pre-paid on the line's "cruises to nowhere.")

Celebrity Cruises
$11.50 per person, per day, for guests in regular staterooms (inside, outside, most balcony).
$12.00 per person, per day, for guests in Concierge or Aqua-class staterooms.
$15.00 per person, per day for guests in Suites.

Costa Cruises
This was easily the most difficult to find out of all the lines listed here. So for those interested, I've provided the link here - and you'll need it to decipher the mind-boggling myriad of gratuities onboard. One nice thing about Costa: guests under 14 pay no service charge. Costa's gratuities are broken down depending on the geographical region of their ships, most of which have seen a modest increase in 2011:

For Caribbean sailings departing from US Ports:
$11.00 per person, per day for adults.
For guests between 14 and 17, $5.50 per person, per day; guests under 14 pay no service charge.

For Caribbean sailings departing from Non-US Ports:
Euro 7.00 per person, per day for sailings under 8 nights.
Euro 6.00 per person per day for sailings over 8 nights.
For guests between the ages of 14 and 17, half the above amounts will apply. Guests under 14 pay no service charge.

For Europe, Dubai, and Costa Marina Sailings:
Euro 7.00 per person, per day for sailings under 8 nights.
Euro 6.00 per person, per day on longer sailings.
For guests between the ages of 14 and 17, half the above amounts will apply. Guests under 14 pay no service charge.

For Transatlantic Sailings:

For South America Sailings:
$ 9.00 US per person, per day.

Euro 6.00 per person, per day.
For guests between the ages of 14 and 17, half the above amounts will apply. Guests under 14 pay no service charge.

For China mini-cruises:
$9.00 US per person, per day.

Cunard Line
In comparison with Costa, Cunard is positively straightforward, and can be found on page 33 of the Cunard Voyage Guide.

Dining Room Waiter: $3.50 USD a day per guest
Assistant waiter: $2.00 USD a day per guest

...which works out to $9.75 per guest, per day ($12 guest, per day for Suites.)

For new bookings that set sail on or after July 1, 2011 the suggested gratuities are:

On this weeklong voyage, the exact port schedule remains a mystery to everyone but the Captain, and nothing beats the suspense of waking up and peeking out the windows to see where you’ve docked.

Taken in April 2005, these photos show her docked in the Port of Vancouver. She was being loaded with supplies and workers for the short trip over to Victoria, where she spent nearly a month in drydock for the first portion of her Signature of Excellence enhancements.

Later refurbishments would see the reconfiguration of the popular Crow’s Nest observation lounge, as well as continued enhancements to all public areas and staterooms. Last year, these Signature of Excellence upgrades continued, adding a new centralized bar concept, transforming the main lounge into the new “Showroom at Sea”, and heavily remodeling and upgrading passenger cabins and all public areas, including new carpeting and upholstery.

These additions help Statendam remain the trendsetting ship she was when she first set sail in 1993.

When the line partnered with National Geographic in 2004, it enhanced its already-extensive expedition offerings by making their vessels true working ships. Not only do they transport passengers curious about some of the most remote locations on Earth, they play host to a wide variety of researchers, photographers, scientists and oceanographers who aren't just there to cruise; they're there to work. Their ships also boast some very cool toys: bow cameras, ROV's (remote-operated-vehicles), kayaks, undersea cameras, hydrophones, and more.

With six full days in Antarctica, the possibilities are as varied as they are endless. Like many Antarctic itineraries, much of what you'll actually see and do depends largely on weather and navigation conditions, but this flexibility allows the line to tailor each voyage specifically to ensure that passengers get the most out of their Antarctic experience.

Almost 24 hours of daylight offer endless possibilities on any ship, but perhaps moreso aboard a Lindblad Expedition ship. While sailing through the icy waters, passengers can take advantage of those little unexpected moments that appear, like a massive, 40-ton humpback whale surfacing near the ship. Officers and Expedition leaders are out and about daily, interacting with passengers and ensuring they are constantly enthralled by both their external and shipboard surroundings.

But the real magic begins ashore, as passengers board Zodiac landing craft for a jaunt amid icebergs almost too enormous to comprehend. Seas as blue as the Caribbean defy explanation, as do shore landings among a large penguin colony, a hike to a summit for breathtaking views and photographic opportunities, or maybe a kayak trip along a cliff-side rookery?

With any Antarctic cruise, surely the greatest joy may be watching as your vessel plows through the pack ice - crunching, crashing, and vibrating the ship as you go. National Geographic photographers are on hand to give you photographic tips, and the ship's resident Undersea Specialist might present some video shot from the ROV; rare footage shot from a depth of almost 1,000 feet below the surface of your vessel.

Another pleasant surprise is the emphasis placed on passenger comfort. These are some of the most comfortable "working ships" you can arguably sail aboard, and National Geographic Explorer is no exception.

While all the lines we've covered here this week offer a stellar Antarctic experience, few have the same depth of education and passenger stimulation that Lindblad Expeditions provides. Antarctic Week: Holland America Line

Did you know Holland America Line sails to Antarctica? They do - and this year might be your last chance to experience the wintry continent with them.

Here's the main difference between voyages offered by smaller expedition ships and larger cruise ships: you can't get off. Veendam carries just over 1,300 passengers. Expedition ships like Silversea's Prince Albert II or Hapag-Lloyd's Hanseatic barely break 200. So while expedition ships typically allow for shore landings aboard purpose-built Zodiac craft, sailing these polar waters is restricted to "scenic cruising only" for ships like Veendam.

Despite this, there are some distinct advantages to sailing on a larger cruise ship to this polar region. The transit of the Drake Passage - notoriously known as one of the roughest waterways on the planet - is likely to be more pleasurable on a larger ship. All the regular amenities - spas, full production shows, multiple dining options - are all available. And these voyages make sense for those looking for a cruise at a lower price-point that sails to more South American ports and focuses less exclusively on the Antarctic Experience.

Sailing aboard ms Veendam, guests are whisked to some of the most fascinating ports in South America, topped off with a few days' sailing the Antarctic Peninsula.

I've been fortunate to have sailed aboard Veendam three times now. She's an extremely comfortable, well-laid out and well-maintained ship. Like her fleetmates, Holland America has been steadily upgrading her over the past six years with new features like an expanded spa area, dedicated wine bar, the line's signature Exploration's Cafe, Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, and the installation of a totally new bar and lounge concept that has been a smashing success for the line. Upgrades to staterooms, the show lounge, and almost every public space have also been added.

Staterooms are extremely comfortable, and tend to be larger than those on competing lines. Inside, Oceanview, Veranda, and Suite categories are available. While we're a big fan of Holland America's outside staterooms for their roomy size and comfortable amenities, if you can swing an S-Suite, go for it. These spacious staterooms are located high up on Navigation Deck and offer 575 square feet of living space, complete with a separate bathroom with tub, powder area, separate closet, and an expansive balcony. Can't quite swing that? Why not try one of the new "Lanai" staterooms? Located on Lower Promenade Deck, these unique rooms are laid out like a veranda stateroom, but feature sliding glass doors that open onto the Promenade Deck itself, and feature two reserved teak loungers - just for you!

While you might not need to be outdoors so much in Antarctica, this no doubt comes in handy while viewing the Glaciers of Chile. One such itinerary is listed below, and departs on January 6, 2012:

Passengers looking to book this particular voyage would be advised to have their travel agent contact Holland America as soon as possible; many categories currently show as "wait list only" at time of printing. There is a similar holiday cruise available on December 20, 2011 that still shows plenty of availability in almost all stateroom categories.

Owing to new rules and regulations brought in just last year governing ships sailing the waters of Antarctica, the first few months of January, 2012 may be the last chance to see Antarctica aboard a "regular" cruise ship. New rules limit both vessel tonnage and maximum passenger loads - all of which will keep expedition ships operating, but could spell the end of mega passenger ship voyages to the region.

In the Antarctic cruise and expedition market, Hamburg-based Hapag Lloyd Cruises remains a major player.

The line’s history dates back to 1847, when its predecessor, the Hamburg-America Line, was formed. One of the line’s most famous employees, General Director Albert Ballin, is also credited with literally “inventing” the first true cruise in 1891 as a way of generating additional revenue from inactive liners. His vision of a voyage where the journey itself was the reward would lay the groundwork for the cruise industry as we know it today.

An impressive list of amenities are included with every Hapag-Lloyd Cruise. Beer and non-alcoholic beverages in the suite minibars are included in the cruise fare. Text email messages under 10kb can also be sent free of charge - an absolute rarity for those wishing to communicate with home. Gratuities are included, as are weather-dependent items like waterproof parkas and umbrellas.

German in heart and heritage, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offers many bilingual voyages designed to appeal and cater to English-speaking travelers, while at the same time preserving the line's European heritage. Everything from the initial brochure to onboard documents, announcements, lifeboat drills and shore excursions will be conducted in English. This commitment to detail is just the first of many features that should make anyone looking for an ultra-luxury expedition experience put Hapag-Lloyd Cruises near the top of their list.

The line's five-star expedition ship HANSEATIC sails the waters of Antarctica, carrying just 184 guests and 125 crew members in an almost 1-to-1 ratio. Though she was built to sail these harsh polar climates, her amenities and styling are distinctly cruise ship-like.

There are seven different stateroom categories, ranging from two-berth outside staterooms to the ship's four, full-blown suites located just aft of the navigation bridge on Bridge Deck. There's even a poolside bar - just like in the Caribbean. A full forward-facing library with bar, a whirlpool and small swimming pool, sauna and spa adorn the highest deck, Observation. Other amenities include two aft-located lounges, the elegant Marco Polo Restaurant, and a reception area.

HANSEATIC is also equipped with fourteen Zodiac-style boats that can be used to ferry passengers ashore when appropriate. The ship herself is also classed with the highest ice rating available to passenger vessels: E4/1A Super - meaning HANSEATIC is capable of navigating through difficult ice conditions without the assistance of a proper icebreaker ship, keeping the vessel as well as her passengers and crew safe at all times.

Hapag-Lloyd has been plying these waters for some time now, and the company clearly knows a thing or two about Polar Exploration. So where can you go with HLC? As with all Antarctic itineraries, the above is scheduled to change based on current conditions at the Captain's discretion. However, in many cases, should one port or scheduled landing not be possible, more often than not another is substituted in its place, thanks to the flexibility of the Zodiac landing craft.

Antarctic Week: Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten offers a variety of Antarctic-based itineraries,

all operated aboard their purpose-built ship, MS Fram.

Formerly known as Norwegian Coastal Voyages, Hurtigruten offers some very compelling Antarctic itineraries, all operated by their flagship, the aptly-named MS Fram.

Built in 2006, Fram is the perfect combination:

part expedition vessel, part cruise ship.

Named after the ship that carried Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen to Antarctic victory in 1910, Hurtigtruten's Fram was built in 2006 specifically to transport passengers to the polar regions. She is 374 feet long, 65 feet wide, and can carry just over three hundred passengers.

With her short, stout appearance, Fram looks like she's ready for anything mother nature can throw at her. I love her outward design - she has a look that is elegant yet tough as nails. But on the inside, she's as comfortable and tastefully decorated as cruise ships plying warmer seas. Naturally, every public room comes with expansive views of the sea, ensuring passengers never miss out on the beauty of Antarctica.

The ship features public rooms decorated in beautiful wood tones, varying shades of blue, and red accents. All public areas are themed after the polar regions in which the Fram sails, and the result is an expedition ship that is warm and inviting on the inside, regardless of the conditions outside.

An excellent photo-tour of this interesting polar expedition cruise ship can be found on Bart de Boer's fantastic ShipParade website, and highlights these spectacular interior spaces, many of which look as though they belong on a far larger vessel. Therein lies the brilliance of this ship: it's the perfect expedition ship for those who aren't willing to compromise on amenities, but can't quite afford the jump to lines like Silversea or Hapag-Lloyd.

There's even two heated outdoor Jacuzzis aboard the Fram - something Roald Amundsen and his crew could only have dreamed about a century ago.

But most importantly, Hurtigruten knows these waters. They've been sailing this region for years, and when other ships have run into trouble, Hurtigruten vessels have come to the rescue.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, these fortunate passengers

to get up-close and personal with this fascinating part of the world.

While in Antarctica, guests can go ashore via the zodiac landing craft stored onboard the ship. As with other expedition lines, shore landings depend on a variety of factors - passenger safety being first and foremost - but Hurtigruten makes every effort to give passengers a stellar polar experience, one that you are sure to remember for the rest of your life.

It's Antarctic Week here at From the Deck Chair. Why Antarctica, you ask? Simply put, there are few areas of this earth as remote, beautiful, and untouched as the Southern Continent. And a surprising number of cruise lines visit this unique polar region, ranging from bare-bones working ships to full-fledged, five star ultra-luxury expedition vessels.

We will profile one line per day between now and Friday and highlight some of the reasons you may want to consider a cruise with them to this amazing area of the world. While the "summer" season in Antarctica is quickly drawing to a close, now is the perfect time to plan an expedition voyage departing from November 2011 to March, 2012.

Silversea Cruises - Prince Albert II

Chances are you've already heard of Silversea Cruises. With a fleet of five nearly all-inclusive, ultra-luxury ships, the line offers voyages to just about every corner of the earth. But did you know they operate a sixth ship: the Prince Albert II, designed to offer year-round expedition cruising?

At 354 feet long, 52 feet wide, and a draft of 14 feet, Prince Albert II is the ideal expedition ship: small enough to maneuver into rare, obscure ports but large enough to offer all the amenities of a much larger vessel. Built in 1989 as Delphin Clipper, she was completely overhauled when Silversea acquired her in 2008 to bring her up to the line's standards. As a result, her interiors are modern and completely in-line with her larger fleetmates.

For polar cruising, Prince Albert II has a Lloyds Register Ice Class Rating of 1A. What does that mean? In order to be given an Ice Class Rating, a ship's hull must be strengthened and made thicker. Scantlings - essentially the ribcage of a ship - must be added, as well as protection for propulsion systems and rudders against damage from ice. Additional watertight bulkheads are required, and advanced heating systems for fuel, ballast, and fresh water tanks can also be added.

Technical speak aside, it means Silversea has put the same time and energy into ensuring your safety as they have into ensuring your comfort.

Speaking of which, you may never want to leave your floating expedition home-away-from home. On Prince Albert II, every stateroom is an ocean-view stateroom or better. There's not a lot of point to securing a stateroom you can't see out of when you journey to some of the most picturesque regions on Earth.

Meals are served in The Restaurant, aft on Deck 4. With its dark cherry woods and golden accents, it can be difficult to imagine some of the most remote locations in the wold lie just outside the expansive bay windows. After dining on cuisine created for the line by Relais & Châteaux, why not venture up the spiral staircase to the Panorama Lounge, located just one deck above, for an after-dinner drink?

There's also a spa, a forward-facing observation lounge, two whirlpools (yes, they get used!), a full theatre, dedicated shops, a fitness centre, and a Silversea hallmark, the Connoisseur's Corner. You don't have to enjoy cigars to take in this fine public room; an assortment of cognacs are also served here, and make for an enjoyable way to unwind after a long day of exploration.

While Prince Albert II may be an expedition vessel, all the trademarks guests have come to expect from Silversea are included. Each stateroom has its own butler who can assist in packing and unpacking luggage and handle any queries you may have throughout the voyage. Beverages - from bottled water to soda to some of the finest wines, spirits and ales - are offered complimentary. Gratuities are also included in your fare. Open-seating dining and a relaxed dress code ensure your voyage unfolds as you'd want it to. And WiFi access and cellular telephone coverage are provided throughout the ship, allowing you to stay in touch with "the real world" - but only if you want to.

There are ten types of stateroom categories aboard Prince Albert II - the smallest measuring a generous 175 square feet, the size of an average balcony stateroom on most mainstream cruise lines. Each room is as unique as the passengers who stay in them: some offer porthole or picture-view windows, and a few even include a French Veranda.

The largest suites measure a whopping 675 square feet - enormous by full-sized cruise ship standards, gargantuan in terms of expedition ships. They include all the expected amenities, such as a walk-in wardrobe and marble bath with separate shower. Also included are a couple of innovative extras: passengers booking Owners or Grand Suites are entitled to four complimentary hours of internet access and two hours of worldwide phone use per voyage segment.

In keeping with the true expedition theme, Prince Albert II offers an 'open-bridge' policy that allows guests to visit the navigation bridge throughout the voyage to observe the crew as they skillfully pilot the ship; a privilege that is highly valued by expedition passengers but quite rare these days.

Complimentary shore excursions are also on offer, led by the ship's capable Expedition Team. These range from intimate group outings to Zodiac landings ashore. After all, isn't it a shame to travel halfway around the world and not set foot on this remarkable continent?

While the vessel is supremely suited to exploring the harsh polar regions, Silversea Expeditions also offers a wide variety of warm-weather destinations, such as South America and the west coast of Africa. Voyages to the UK, around Iceland, Norway, Peru, the Caribbean - the possibilities are endless.

Intrigued? It's hard not to be. Many of the regions visited by Prince Albert II, particularly the polar ones, are ever changing. It's hard to say how long they will remain in their current, almost myth-like state.

All the more reason to not put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

So where can you go? Silversea offers a variety of 10 and 17-day itineraries to the region, some of which include port calls to South Georgia, resting place of explorer Ernest Shackleton. But most exciting is our partnership with Ralph Grizzle. Extraordinarily well-respected in the cruise and travel industry, Ralph boasts an impressive list of accomplishments, and was the North American Travel Journalism Association pick for “Best Cruise Writing” in 2005. His sites, Avid Cruiser, River Cruise Advisor, and Family Cruise Advisor, offer the same unique perspective we strive to create here at From the Deck Chair.

But more importantly, I like Ralph. He’s a great guy, and if you meet him, it’s hard not to be taken by his height (over six feet) and his firm handshake and quick smile. He enjoys what he does for a living, and it shows.

For myself personally, that’s exactly who I want to partner with to take this humble little site to the next level. This agreement allows us to share content back and forth between sites, and hopefully introduce readers to more unique cruises, ships, itineraries and voyages. And that's something we're both extremely passionate about.

Europe 2011: Why Now is the Year to Go

Europe is a destination that just seems to get more popular with each passing year. And with good reason: there's more history, natural beauty, culinary delights, and fine people packed into this one area of the world than you can shake a stick at. Are you a history lover? The Acropolis at Athens, the Colosseum in Rome, or the Tower of London might be up your alley. Then there's the natural beauty of Europe. The majesty of the Norwegian Fjords is a tough act to follow, along with the semi-sunken splendor of Venice and the whitewashed beauty of the Greek Islands like Mykonos, Rhodes, and Santorini.

If you ask any North American about Europe, chances are they'll gush about it if they've been over there. Those who haven't been may not see the benefit to being crammed in economy class for ten to twelve hours. But take it from this traveler - Europe is a destination worth exploring regardless of how many hours, connections, or flights it takes - it is a magical, incredible journey.

And the best year to travel to Europe may be this very one. Here's why:

Variety
Northern European and Mediterranean voyages have never been more popular, and as a result nearly every line has increased their capacity in Europe for 2011. The result is a win-win for passengers and cruise lines alike, and means that there is no shortage of itineraries to suit every taste and budget. From ultra-affordable six and seven day Mediterranean cruises to longer 14-day British Isles voyages, there's sure to be something for everyone this year.

Year-Round Voyages
Once upon a time, the European cruise season was largely relegated to the months between April and October, but no longer. In addition to Europe-based lines like Fred. Olsen and MSC Cruises, more North American lines are getting in on the act, with Royal Caribbean and NCL basing ships on the continent year-round. Some lines, like Princess and Holland America have such lengthy European seasons that finding a getaway in late November or early December isn't out of the question.

Reasonable Exchange Rates
European currencies like the Pound Sterling and the Euro continue to equalize relative to the US and Canadian dollars, and are at very reasonable rates compared to even four or five years ago. With the former exchange rate, a hotel stay in London could be prohibitively expensive. In 2011, that same hotel stay is dramatically more affordable.

Bonus Incentives
While there's no denying airfare costs to Europe can be a stumbling block, many upscale cruise lines are offering free roundtrip economy-class airfare from a number of North American gateways. While these voyages may carry a higher up-front cost, do the math: if the seemingly less-expensive cruise requires a greater cost in airfare, it may make sense to upgrade to a line that does offer a free air package. In many cases, not only will it make financial sense, but travel sense too: many upscale lines include additional amenities like complimentary beverages, gratuities included in your cruise fare, and upgraded staterooms, cuisine and service.

Carnival Experiences Record Bookings

Carnival has just experienced its greatest booking numbers since 2007.

The folks over at Carnival Cruise Lines must be giddy with delight: they've just come off of a record booking week the likes of which haven't been seen since 2007, before the recession took a chunk out of their profits.

Last week, the line booked a whopping 165,308 guests on future voyages. If you break it down, that's roughly 23,000 guest bookings per day. Keep in mind, these aren't numbers for Carnival PLC, the umbrella corporation that oversees lines like Holland America and Seabourn. This is just Carnival Cruise Lines, better known as "The Fun Ships" - and those numbers are nothing to sniff at.

Gerry Cahill, President & CEO of Carnival, mentioned that while the economy is improving, customers are still seeking value in their cruise vacations - something we've heard for months from a number of industry insiders. It's here that the travel industry differentiates itself from others who have found themselves hit hard by the recession. Rather than cutting back travel altogether, most people are looking for the cruise vacation that will give them the most bang for their buck. As a result, cruise lines haven't been forced to price themselves out of the market in the same fashion that other industries have had to just to make a buck.

The numbers released yesterday also speak to the quality of product Carnival offers. Is it Regent or Seabourn? No - but it does offer one heck of a good time for a price that many find irresistible, and that is a formula that has proven incredibly successful for the line, which operates 22 "Fun Ships" around the world.

Like many lines, Carnival is also continually re-inventing itself, and no doubt attracting new passengers in the process. Just a few months ago, the line announced plans to deploy its Carnival Spirit to Australia year-round - a very esoteric choice for the line, which is perhaps known best for its variety of North American homeports.

But with over 165,000 guests booking passage on Carnival last week, we can't help but wonder: what will this week be like?

Unique Itinerary: Asia

When we look for unique itineraries, we like to focus on voyages that offer an interesting mix of ports to destinations that are either off the beaten path or simply different from other competing cruises. Throw in a great ship, and you've got a recipe for a stellar cruise vacation.

One of the hottest "new" areas of the world to cruise is Asia. Grand Princess Refit Alters Profile; Adds Amenities

When Princess Cruises launched Grand Princess in 1998, it made headlines not only for its size, but also its distinctive styling. But in a refit later this spring, she stands to loose her most distinctive external feature - and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

During a drydock from April 11 to May 4 in the Bahamas, Grand Princess will loose her distinctive, elevated "spoiler" above her stern. Home to Skywalkers Night Club, this area was the first of its kind to be built on any cruise ship, and was serviced by a very cool moving walkway that elevated passengers from Deck 15 to Deck 18, with stunning views of the ocean and ship below.

But when Grand Princess was built, there was no existing real-world prototype to compare to. As a result, the ship was top and stern heavy owing to heavier construction materials being used. This increases the overall structural stress on the hull, and reduced the ship's fuel economy.

In its place on Deck 15 will be a new nightclub, One5, named for the deck it resides on.

Because sister ships Golden Princess and Star Princess were constructed later, their "spoilers" were made of lighter materials and aren't subject to the same stresses as the heavier one aboard Grand Princess. Thus, the line has no current plans to remove Skywalkers from them.

Besides the structural considerations, many cruisers disliked how the massive structure blocked out the sunlight to the pool and terraced decks below. When we sailed aboard sister-ship Golden Princess in 2008, we also noticed Skywalkers itself was rarely utilized, despite the stunning views. Conversely, the area was far more populated in its lower-deck incarnation aboard our Crown Princess voyages.

Grand Princess is also getting a makeover on the inside. Her atrium - always the most different from later designs - will be transformed into the line's signature Piazza, first popularized on 2006's Crown Princess. The popular International Cafe, serving up light snacks and drinks, will be located here, as will Vines, Princess's dedicated wine and sushi bar. More than 30 different wines will be available by the glass or bottle, and tapas are now offered here as well.

A new Tea Lounge and Library concept, called Leaves, will also be installed on Grand Princess. In partnership with the Mighty Leaf Tea Company, over five hundred (yes, five hundred!) different blends of tea will be offered, along with the assistance of a trained tea sommelier to aid guests in their selection. Mix in some books, and you've got one area that could prove to be incredibly popular.

The line's signature Crown Grill specialty restaurant will also make an appearance here, serving up delicious steak, seafood and lobster. The casino will be remodeled, along with enhancements to the Horizon Court Lido Buffet, Lotus Spa, and general public areas. Crooner's Martini Bar, a popular addition on other Princess ships, will also be added during the refit.

While she may be loosing her most distinctive external feature, these exciting changes and refurbishments ensure Grand Princess will continue to offer passengers a stellar cruise experience for years to come.

Solo Cruising: What You Need to Know

Will that be champagne for one or two?

Chances are, it's going to happen to all of us at some point in our cruising "career" - the one voyage where a significant other, family member, or friend isn't available to cruise with you. What's a cruiseaholic to do?

Keep going - solo, that is.

Cruising alone isn't as scary as it might sound. After all, you're on a cruise ship with a few hundred or thousand other guests, some of whom are undoubtedly sailing solo as well. Even then, most people aboard any ship are there to meet new friends and enjoy themselves, and with cruise lines like NCL, P&O, and Royal Caribbean building solo-occupancy staterooms again, there has never been a better time to set off on your own.

I have taken five solo cruises: four with Holland America Line, and one with Royal Caribbean. I can't say one really does it better than the other; it just depends on your personal tastes. Do I miss my fiancee? Of course! But there are certain voyages she has no desire to go on, and I respect that. Trust me, you never want to force your significant other or friend into a voyage they don't want - it's a recipe for trouble.

But before you do sail solo, here's some things to keep in mind.

Solo and Single are Two Different Things
Contrary to what you might think, people sailing solo aren't necessarily all single. This isn't The Love Boat, after all! But regardless of relationship status, solo cruisers are looking to mingle and meet new friends, and cruises provide a unique opportunity to do so. The best way to do this is to involve yourself in activities that encourage team participation. Trivia, scavenger hunts, lectures, Name that Tune - all good activities to meet people on a regular basis, since many cruises include these events daily. There are also usually solo cruiser "mixers" in the evening (Holland America in particular does a great job of these.)

Beware the Single Occupancy Rate
Because - very technically - you're depriving the cruise line of the additional revenue by occupying a stateroom meant for two people, most lines will charge a single supplement. This can range anywhere from 110% of the per-person cruise fare all the way to 200% - the same amount as you would have paid had you sailed with someone else. But don't despair! Many lines usually offer discounted single supplements on select sailings. Supplements also tend to be higher for Veranda and Suite categories than inside or outside staterooms.

Some single-supplement-friendly lines? Carnival, Holland America, and Silversea all offer decent single supplement rates, and in some cases waive them entirely for select sailings. Historically, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean have consistently charged 200% of the per-person fare, though this is beginning to change. I sailed aboard Grandeur of the Seas in 2009 for only 10% more than the per-person fare - making the quick five-day voyage more than affordable.

Socialize - Pre-Cruise
In this digital age, why wait until you're onboard to meet new friends? The internet offers several great resources to "meet" additional cruisers on your sailing long before you first step aboard.

One of the best sites for this is MeetOnCruise. You can create a profile, find your sailing, and see who else will be traveleing with you. If your sailing is a long way off, be patient as new cruisers add themselves in advance of your departure date. Sometimes groups organize get-togethers while onboard, while other times it can just be nice to share information about your ports, shore excursions, and ship.

CruiseCritic's Roll Call forums also provide an excellent way to meet people on your sailing before you even leave the house.

Have Fun
The bottom line: everyone is on a cruise to have a good time. Regardless of which line or ship you're sailing on, this one fact holds true. Embrace it. Get out, mingle, interact, and do everything you would if you were traveling with another person.

Enjoy yourself, and you're certain to enjoy your cruise - whether you're sailing by yourself or not.

Carnival Splendor Prepares to Return to Long Beach

An article by KTVU California reports that the fire-damaged Carnival Splendor is due to depart San Francisco tomorrow, after arriving on January 23rd to utilize the city's drydock for the final phase of her repairs following an engine room fire on November 8, 2010 that left the ship adrift and without power for days.

While the ship was towed safely back to San Diego and her passengers and most crew disembarked, it was there that the real problems began. Though it was initially hoped the ship could be repaired in a matter of weeks, it soon became clear the damage was too extensive, and Carnival Cruises canceled voyages through the rest of 2010. A further setback caused much of January and February's voyages to be scrapped.

Carnival Splendor is now due to resume her weekly Mexican Rivera service from the port of Long Beach on Sunday, February 20, 2011.

What is fascinating about the article is the behind-the-scenes glimpse it gives us into the extent of the repairs that were necessary. While in San Francisco, the ship recieved two new generators - and an engine. If you know about cruise ships, you know that none of those are easily replaced. Ship's engines alone are massive - so big that a special aircraft was required to ferry it to San Francisco. Removing an engine from a ship and changing it out usually requires the ship to be lifted completely out of the water, at which point a hole is cut in her side, and the engine is moved out sideways.

For Carnival Splendor, it was likely far more tricky given that the engine room was in all likelihood damaged by fire.

That two generators and an engine were replaced entirely also gives a revealing look into the extent of the fire, and makes it apparent that Carnival's Splendor crew members did an excellent job in ensuring the fire never left the machinery spaces.

Splendor may have been damaged, but her most important assets - her passengers and crew - were kept safe. Kudos again to all of the crew aboard Carnival Splendor - it's apparent they did an amazing job.

Arranging flights - and choosing the right airline -

can try the patience of even experienced travelers.

Arranging flights to and from your ship can be one of the most challenging aspects of your cruise vacation. Factors such as price and departure and arrival times weigh heavily into the decision-making process, and can leave even the most experienced traveler scratching their head.

For some destinations, there may be only a handful of arrival times and airlines to choose from. For major routes, like those to many European and North American ports of embarkation, chances are you'll have your pick of the airlines you fly on. And all that choice can create confusion, particularly if you don't know what amenities are offered by each airline. Sometimes cheap isn't the way to go, but nor does the most expensive ticket guarantee a stellar experience. It all comes down to one thing: choice.

Here's a few airlines that really deliver some bang for the buck - and comfort, too.

Air Canada

About eight years ago, most Canadians were united by one thing: a deep dislike of our national airline. Their service had grown so poor by 2004 that I'd stopped flying with them altogether, preferring to give my hard-earned flight dollars to competing WestJet. But Air Canada has turned the corner, and they're now my favorite airline to fly anywhere in the world. Almost every aircraft in the fleet sports new, comfortable seating with Video-on-Demand at every seatback, and their fleet of wide-body Airbus A330, Boeing 767 and 777-200 and 777-300 aircraft make flying internationally a pleasure.

United Airlines

Three simple words: United Economy Plus. For a little bit more cash, you get far more space than standard economy class, and that can be a huge lifesaver on long-haul flights. United's recent merger with Continental Airlines means they now cover an astounding array of routes within the continental United States, and their transoceanic routes are tough to beat. After a string of so-so flights with them back in 2004, they won us over this past summer with great on-time performance, clean aircraft, and friendly crews.

JetBlue

Being Canadian, the number of airlines in the United States mystifies me. So when I have to travel to the States, I like trying something new, and a flight from Seattle to Long Beach on JetBlue left me endlessly impressed. JetBlue operates a fleet of narrow-body Airbus A320 and Embraer E190 aircraft to a wide variety of US and Caribbean destinations. Their pricing comes close to budget airline Southwest, but with a little more features. Interactive television sets are offered at every seat, along with snack and beverage service. Service is friendly if informal, but the passengers seem to enjoy it. JetBlue always seems to get put through the wringer in the press (witness the winter cancellations at JFK or the famous flight-attendant meltdown this past summer), but they offer a stellar product at a price that's tough to beat.

Cathay Pacific

Headed for Asia? Take Cathay Pacific. Our favorite airline for their fantastic, non-stop, wide-body Boeing 777 service between Hong Kong, Vancouver and New York Kennedy, there's nothing like settling into your bottom of the barrel economy class seat and being asked what type of wine you'd like. Or if you'd like some water before takeoff. A little goodie bag of in-flight toiletries, as well as a pillow and blanket, await you on every seat. Economy Class on Cathay Pacific is as good as first-class on many domestic airlines. Did we mention there's even a dinner menu?

Icelandair

Picking a European airline, one might be tempted to go with the most common choices: British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa. But we like Icelandair for the simple fact that they offer some absolutely incredible deals, particularly if you are looking to fly from North American to Iceland, England, Norway, Germany, and other European destinations. They utilise narrow-body Boeing 757's that are becoming more common on transatlantic routes, and offer code-share flights with SAS, Finnair, and Alaska Airlines. They also offer a fantastic layover option for those looking to explore Reykjavik on their way to or from their port of embarkation.

Of course, this is just a small list. There are many airlines that offer good quality service and comfort, even in economy class. But the next time you're scratching your head over what airline to take, why not branch out and try something new?

You might be surprised how enjoyable flying can be; something that is bound to start your cruise off on the right foot.
