Dean and Phil have, as always, ten dollars wagered on the outcome of their predicted winners in all twenty-four categories. Phil has won each of the first three years. Will Dean finally exact some revenge? Find out and enjoy Dean and Phil’s insightful, irreverent and sometimes scathing takes on the motion picture industry’s night of nights. Before the festivities can commence, however, Phil responds to the feedback and criticism he’s received over his diatribe against Kevin Smith and Southwest Airline’s shameful publicity stunt of last month. He tries to clarify his points. Let us know if he succeeds. After all, it is YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

For years, Dean and Phil railed against the collective Hollywood wisdom (”Hollywood wisdom” being a contradiction in terms) that films shouldn’t open in January and early February. Now, that they’ve been proven correct and the studios are releasing box-office behemoths like Shutter Island and Valentine’s Day in the first part of the year, Dean and Phil cry out for the need to see something that’s actually, you know, a half-way DECENT film! They finally caught up with Zombieland, and it only added to their cinematic depression. Where can a true movie lover turn for quality? Netflix? Don’t get Phil started on Netflix … Or, rather, please DO get him started as it’s always delightful to hear a podcast host take on one of his show’s sponsors! After concluding their discussion with a few insightful and promising takes on the future of their own films’ distribution, they reveal the latest from their search for the truth (because The Truth Is Out There) … Interviews abounded this week, including discussions about what really happened on 9/11 with Eric and Eliza Roberts and Bruno from WeAreChangeLA. Dean also sat down with G Edward Griffin to discuss the New World Order, the United Nations, the Federal Reserve system, collectivism and the possibility of a world without cancer. All in all, it’s scary stuff. And speaking of scary, yes that WAS Phil with kind words to say about both Ashton Kutcher AND Colin Farrell … Let the apocalypse begin!

Say what you will about Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, they are two podcast hosts unlikely to ever get kicked off an airplane because they are too fat, which is exactly what happened to filmmaker and podcast host Kevin Smith this weekend. Obesity and the industrialization of food ARE foremost on Dean and Phil’s minds, however, and on the minds of such experts as Dr. Stanley Monteith and Alex Jones, subjects that have been interviewed for THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, individuals who believe that the New World Order is here and that its agenda involves a massive reduction in the human population. Meanwhile, it’s President’s Day here in the U.S., so Dean and Phil discuss some of their favorite stories relating to their favorite presidents. Finally, Phil dusts off his soapbox and unleashes a beauty of an oratory on subjects ranging from the Jungian “shadow” archetype to our intuitive understanding of the world and the need for biological diversity. The real question is What DON’T Dean and Phil talk about on this installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour?

It’s time for Dean and Phil to count down their Top Ten Films of 2009. We fear it’s a show that inspires more questions than it answers, however. For example … Why did Phil even bother making a Top Ten list when he has yet to see The White Ribbon, In the Loop, or Broken Embraces? Can Dean even count to ten (you’ll hear what we mean by this!)? Is Avatar really a “game-changer”? If so, is this a good thing? Nevertheless, a more entertaining hour of free internet conversation you are unlikely to find. Trust us. This top ten show has some huge unexpected laughs.

As soon as they crossed the border into the states, they recorded this podcast while driving through the natural splendor of Idaho’s panhandle Pile into the backseat of their rented RAV 4 and listen as your friends in podcasting discuss their on-going search for the truth in a world of conspiracy and their HELL GIGS documentary they shot with Roman Danylo in various parts of Alberta and supernatural British Columbia. Other topics include the war that has broken out in late night television, Jesse Ventura’s conspiracy show and the disaster in Haiti. Deprived of their usual podcast equipment, bringing this show to you again involved a great deal of work on Dean’s part, which is no problem at all as it is a labor of love. This is YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, after all!

Your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, are in Canada shooting footage for TWO projects: THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE (a documentary about the world of conspiracy) and HELL GIGS (about a return to Dean’s roots as a comic). While in Vancouver, they got together with Dean’s good friends Bruce Harwood and Tom Braidwood to record this week’s show. For those listeners who were not fans of The X-Files, Dean, Bruce and Tom played (respectively) Richard “Ringo” Langly, John Fitzgerald Byers and Melvin Frohike. Collectively, those characters are known to millions of fans the world over as “The Lone Gunmen”, conspiracy theorists, computer hackers, government watchdogs and publishers of The Magic Bullet newsletter, who aided agents Mulder and Scully through nine years of investigations and who were featured in their very own spin-off series. Oh, and because Dean and Phil are traveling without their producer (Lyle Skosey, who is back home in L.A. getting plenty of rest and regaining his strength – Thanks to so many of you who asked and sent your best wishes), they weren’t able to bring all their usual podcast gear. As a result, Dean pulled an ALL-NIGHTER figuring out how to get this show online and available. Why did he do this? Because he cares And because it is YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, after all!

As loyal listeners know, Dean and Phil have been in production (for six months now!) on a feature film that spans the globe, seeking to document the search for the truth in a world of conspiracy. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE producer Lyle Skosey has been deeply immersed in researching various conspiracies. He is on board this week’s episode, dropping by to discuss his experience thus far, to ask questions of Dean, and to reveal shadowy details about his own mysterious past. Finally, Lyle and Dean share one of Dean’s all-time favorite conspiracy theories, involving NASA, the Nazis and Jesus, just in time for Christmas! Have a very, merry merry, everybody (and we do mean “merry”)!

<itunes:summary>As loyal listeners know, Dean and Phil have been in production (for six months now!) on a feature film that spans the globe, seeking to document the search for the truth in a world of conspiracy. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE producer Lyle Skosey has been deeply immersed in researching various conspiracies. He is on board this week's episode, dropping by to discuss his experience thus far, to ask questions of Dean, and to reveal shadowy details about his own mysterious past. Finally, Lyle and Dean share one of Dean's all-time favorite conspiracy theories, involving NASA, the Nazis and Jesus, just in time for Christmas! Have a very, merry merry, everybody (and we do mean "merry")!</itunes:summary>

Forgive us, we’re drunk on the holiday spirit. And egg nog. Dean and Phil continue to examine the role of critics, the function and importance of criticism, and even mention some of the critics awards’ being handed out like candy. The Award season is fast-approaching and critics are revealing their Top Ten Films of the year AND their Best of the Decade! So, Dean and Phil, who often talk about film critics and movie reviews, thought it was the perfect time to welcome an important critic onto the show. Luke Y. Thompson is an actor and a writer, a cultural observer, a contributor to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood, and a film critic for E! Online as well as film critic for such print sources as the L.A. Weekly. Some of the topics he discusses with your friends in podcasting are the purpose of film critics, the future of film criticism, the best (and worst) films of the decade, why the horror genre is so maligned/misunderstood, and what films that have come out this year really deserve your attention AND need your help.

A recurring theme on the show has been the way marketing departments have been strangling creativity in show business (in any business?). If the marketing department believes a particular story will sell, that story gets made into a movie. If the marketing department doesn’t like the demographics of a particular television show, that show gets canceled, regardless of how many total viewers it might have.

This week, Dean and Phil approach the discussion from a different perspective, revealing to you the all-time worst jobs of marketing films. Keep your pen and paper handy because your friends in podcasting might just hit you with some ideas for your Netflix queue … Films that either slipped under your radar because they were marketed so poorly, or films that were made to look like something you wouldn’t like because they were marketed so incorrectly.

<itunes:summary>A recurring theme on the show has been the way marketing departments have been strangling creativity in show business (in any business?). If the marketing department believes a particular story will sell, that story gets made into a movie. If the marketing department doesn't like the demographics of a particular television show, that show gets canceled, regardless of how many total viewers it might have.

This week, Dean and Phil approach the discussion from a different perspective, revealing to you the all-time worst jobs of marketing films. Keep your pen and paper handy because your friends in podcasting might just hit you with some ideas for your Netflix queue ... Films that either slipped under your radar because they were marketed so poorly, or films that were made to look like something you wouldn't like because they were marketed so incorrectly.

We won't promise it's our best show, but Dean and Phil are certainly excited, believing it to be their most marketable episode yet of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.</itunes:summary>

From “light workers” transforming our DNA to the mystical wisdom of ancient Sufi Masters, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness have been leaving no stone unturned in their search for interesting, entertaining, amusing, thought-provoking and inspirational stories that they can bring onto YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. On this week’s show, “tone” seems to be the area of focus. From individuals telling the stories of their life and/or consciousness-altering experiences, to stand-up comedians trying to build up and release the audience’s tension, to television producers re-imagining classic series of yesteryear, to documentary filmmakers attempting to balance the reality of what is being kept from people with an optimistic appraisal of what can be done to improve our way of life, Dean and Phil find one very important recurring theme: The story you are telling isn’t nearly as important as how artfully you are telling it. And when it comes to inviting, intriguing, provoking, amusing or otherwise delighting an audience, TONE is the most ephemeral, delicate, and important weapon in a story-teller’s arsenal. It is also the most difficult aspect of a creative project to market!

Take a road trip with Dean and Phil as they drive to sunny Malibu to conduct an interview for their documentary The Truth Is Out There. Dean has just returned from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia where he hosted a Live Ghost Adventures special for the Travel Channel. He reveals much about the pressure of hosting this show, of the behind-the-scenes turmoil and he critiques the very Ghost Adventures approach to paranormal investigation. Dean also looks forward to his work this week shooting a guest-starring role on Bones. Speaking of bones, sucking dead bones dry seems to be a rampant and recurring theme in popular culture, from the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It topping the box office charts, to a spate of sequels and remakes dominating the production reports. Dean and Phil weigh in on the prevailing corporate and social paradigm of risk management, and what that means for creative expression, as well as what it means to lead with your strengths. Oh and Phil concocts a conspiracy theory relating to the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918. As always, an irreverent, insightful and inspiring hour of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy ride along the pot-hole-ridden freeways of Southern California, but if you behave yourselves, we may just hit a drive thru!

Most people would be exhausted after a breakneck trip to “the continent”, especially after getting sick. Not so with Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, who bring you one of the most action-packed, insightful and inspired installments of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

After recapping and reappraising their excellent Berlin adventure, Dean looks ahead to his live Halloween television gig, ghost-hunting at an old insane asylum in West Virginia for the Travel Channel. Phil expresses skepticism and reveals two possible conspiracies that involve Dean and his company Geek Chic.

Speaking of conspiracy, Phil tackles the swine flu vaccine, raising many alarming questions, while Dean weighs in on the marketing of illness.

Then, because “Hollywood” is actually part of the show’s name, Dean and Phil address a current Screen Actors Guild conspiracy theory involving Seymour Cassel.

Finally, Phil steps up high on his soapbox and addresses the alarming trend in contemporary society of not only shooting the messenger, but of doing so in order that we may ignore the message. If you enjoy spirited, thoughtful and inspiring commentary and analysis, you won’t want to miss it.

Phil expresses skepticism and reveals two possible conspiracies that involve Dean and his company Geek Chic.

Then, because "Hollywood" is actually part of the show's name, Dean and Phil address a current Screen Actors Guild conspiracy theory involving Seymour Cassel.

While there, Dean performed one of his most hilarious improv comedy shows ever, mingled with fans, and took a tour of some of Berlin’s most historic, conspiracy-related sites, while Phil shot High Defintion footage of the entire trip for their documentary The Truth is Out There …

Oh, and they also managed to record this week’s show in front of a live audience from a hotel ballroom in the heart of downtown Berlin!

We know that we promised to take audio clips from the interviews conducted at the Project Camelot conference “Awake and Aware” (interviews shot for the feature documentary The Truth is Out There) and edit them together with explanation and commentary from Dean and Phil. It would have been a good show (and may be at some point in the future). What actually happened turned out to be even better, though! Funny, revealing, educational and even inspiring.

It begins with Phil questioning Dean about the road trip he just took with his father through the American and Canadian heartlands. Thanks to Dean and Phil’s spontaneous conversation, we can all get our kicks along Route 66 … And those kicks qualify as good clean, fun, NOT the type of kicks that lead to extortion or on-air confessions or apologies. Dean and Phil could not let the week go by without weighing in on the (alleged) David Letterman extortion scandal. And Phil finds he must respond to those on both sides of the newly inflamed Roman Polanski saga. Finally, staying with the theme, Dean and Phil consider a “rape fantasy” episode of David Duchovny’s series Californication after that episode’s disturbing content is brought to Phil’s attention by a loyal CHH listener.

Somehow amidst all that, the new Coen Bros. film (A Serious Man), the newly discovered ring around Saturn (and a corresponding conspiracy theory its discovery), a preview of Dean and Phil’s forthcoming “live” Berlin podcast, and Phil’s enthusiasm for the best fiction book he’s read in quite a while all get discussed.

Perhaps this is what is meant when people say, “Through the magic of podcasting” … Wait, people DON’T say that? Well, that’s only because they haven’t heard this installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Dean and Phil give a brief report on an event they attended. The event was Project Camelot’s Awake and Aware conference designed to “get the truth out” about a variety of topics, most of which are conspiracy-related and many of which involve extraterrestrials. Their report is brief because a future installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour will consist of excerpts from interviews Dean and Phil conducted at the event. This week’s show mostly focuses on the glorious tradition of actors who become producers, dating back to Chaplin, Pickford and Fairbanks and their United Artists. From Burt Lancaster in the ’50’s to Dean Haglund today, Dean and Phil converse about why so many actors make this move and they invite Actor-turned-director-turned-producer Stephen Furst to join the discussion.

You may know Stephen from his starring roles in such comedic blockbusters as Animal House and The Dream Team. You may know him from his starring roles on the hit television series St. Elsewhere and Babylon 5. If you’re a fan of science-fiction television, you might know him as the director of the TV Movies Dragon Storm, Path of Destruction and Basilisk: The Serpent King. Or perhaps you know him as the producer of this summer’s box office hit My Sister’s Keeper.

The point is, you SHOULD know him, and even if you don’t, he’s a funny, forthright man and you won’t want to miss his two part interview with your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness!

Vince Gilligan spent Sunday night at the Emmy Awards, where his Breaking Bad leading man, Bryan Cranston, won the award for Best Actor in a Drama Series (for the second year in a row!). Today, Vince Gilligan, creator of the series (as well as a hugely admired writer-producer of films like Hancock and television series like The X-Files), is back with Dean and Phil for part two of their conversation. Also, Phil shares with Dean an idea for a film-making symposium he would like to bring to fan conventions. Is this too much for one show? Nah. In fact, it’s as simple as (Chillpak Hollywood Hour) 1-2-3 …
