There are easy, preventative steps pet owners can take to help promote overall wellness and a long healthy life for their cats and dogs.

Vets for Pets

A veterinarian is a crucial partner in the care of a pet. The quality of care that a pet receives in its earliest years can affect its health as it grows older. While some pet owners only seek veterinary advice upon noticing significant changes in their pet’s body, it is advised to bring a pet to a veterinarian regularly to minimize the chances of serious health condition.

Apart from recurring check-ups that cover the eyes to skin and fur, technology used by veterinarians can evaluate the complex aspects of health to aid the pet’s longevity. A visit to the local veterinarian can involve blood tests, oral exams, radiographs (X-rays), and urinalysis that can reveal what may be lacking or is being adequately provided to the pet.

Some diseases do not manifest physical symptoms immediately. If left untreated, pets may experience more pain once the illness has developed. For instance, many pet owners do not notice that their senior dog has osteoarthritis until it has become severe. Vaccination

One of the cornerstones of responsible pet ownership is providing the pet with as much protection to aid its immune system as possible. Regular vaccination is an easy way to prevent serious illness in pets. Only veterinarians and trained practitioners can safely administer a vaccination after making a comprehensive assessment of age and health condition. There are several core vaccines that kittens and puppies need to receive as early as 6 weeks of age. For canines, veterinarians recommend vaccination for distemper, parvo, adenovirus, and rabies. On the other hand, felines are suggested to obtain panleukopenia or feline distemper, calici or respiratory infection, herpes, and rabies. Pet owners should seek professional veterinary opinion on the essential non-core vaccines to apply thereafter.

Among the many diseases that owners must keep their pets from contracting, rabies remains a principal concern. Although the country no longer belongs to the watch list of rabies incidents in the ASEAN region, there is still a need for pet owners to incorporate inoculation for rabies in their pet’s health maintenance schedule to ensure a happy and healthy life. Kittens and puppies are recommended to get one dose of rabies vaccine annually.

There is no specific feeding practice that perfectly suits all types of pets. A veterinarian can help determine the most suitable food to adequately sustain each pet’s weight, energy level for daily activities, and appearance.

Measuring the amount of food given of a particular diet is key to matching the unique metabolism and activity level of each pet. The feeding directions on the pet food label provide guidance on the quantity of pet food for each meal. A veterinarian can help a pet owner assess their pet’s weight and body condition. If the pet begins to gain or lose weight, the volume of food at each feeding should be adjusted. Treats should be provided in moderation to avoid packing extra weight. People foods must also be avoided as ingredients are not only potentially harmful to general pet health but also increases the opportunity for pets to exceed the allowed caloric intake and pack on the pounds. Pet owners should be vigilant of any rapid changes in the pet’s weight and energy level as it may indicate serious health condition such as malnutrition, diabetes, and even some cancers.

A wide range of commercial pet foods from the United States promote a well-balanced diet that is fully formulated for all stages of pet growth. Commercial U.S. pet food brands continue to bring the most regulated set of products in the animal food industry. Hooked on Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

It's been a while since I've last watched an anime series. I haven't really been concentrating on Bleach and Naruto that I've lost interest in them. One Piece, well, that I really haven't gotten to watch (I didn't like the animation, hehe!). So when my colleague recommended Attack on Titan (Jap. title: Shingeki no Kyojin), I thought that maybe I should watch it -- because I like animes with themes like dystopian/ alternate universe kinda thing.

Attack on Titan is about the human race facing extinction with the arrival of titans devouring them not because of hunger but because of sheer pleasure/ instinct. The survivors then built concentric walls to protect themselves from the giants. After a century of peace, a Colossal Titan appeared and caused damage to the outermost wall, enabling the mindless titans to once again wreak havoc among humanity.

The story basically focuses on 3 childhood friends: Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert. After seeing his mother being eaten by a titan, Eren vows revenge against the giants by enlisting in the military. After graduating, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin suddenly find themselves face to face with their old nemesis: the titans. As the military try to fight them and save the walls, Eren becomes a central figure in the battle, in which he and the human race do not know if he is friend or foe.

Originally an ongoing manga series, Attack on Titan has been translated for the boob tube, currently with 23 episodes as of this writing. I'm already in the 13th episode (have quite a lot to catch up on) and it's keeping me glued to the screen. So far, the pace has been exciting, leaving you wanting for more when you get to the last few minutes of each episode. For sure, it's going to be something I'll be watching for the coming weeks.

Just to give you a heads-up: scenes can get pretty violent. The first episode alone already echoes Bambi and Land Before Time. If you've watched both movies, you'll get the common denominator among the three. Hehe!

Can't wait to get my hands on the next episodes. If you're a fan of apocalyptic-themed shows, you'll like Attack on Titan.

Starbucks Philippines introduces Ristretto Bianco and Salted Caramel Mocha

In its aim to further enhance the coffee drinking experience of Filipinos, Starbucks Philippines has recently released 2 beverages in the market.

First is the Ristretto Bianco, an espresso drink that's first sold in Starbucks' European branches. This rich and velvety espresso beverage is making its way into the Philippines, introducing a cup of full-bodied coffee shot with microfoamed whole milk.

The second beverage is a returning favorite: the Salted Caramel Mocha. Imagine espresso, steamed milk, mocha sauce, toffee nut syrup, and whipped cream plus a buttery caramel sauce and a concoction of turbinado sugar and smoked sea salt. Sweet and salty, but perfect in the tongue. Enjoy it hot or iced, or as a frappuccino drink.

I know it's been a while--actually a very long while--since I've written anything in this blog. I've just been too busy doing a lot of stuff, on work and family and everything in between, that I haven't had the time to write about anything here.

Thankfully, I got to have a little downtime. In that moment, I checked my blogs (yes I have a couple of them) to see how they've been. And I got to thinking of reviving even just one of them. It would be such a shame if they just close down, after all the time I've invested in them.

So I went to this blog's settings, tweaked the look a bit (well, not really--the look is pretty much a far cry from before), and decided to breathe new life into this blog by posting. Yes, this Pinay is staging a comeback.

It doesn't mean new posts everyday, can't do that. But I'll make sure to post new things whenever I can--feedback on movies I've seen recently, food I've tasted, places I've been to, and all sorts of stuff. Just to keep it alive.

I intend to keep this blog alive. And hopefully, you, the reader, can support me on this. :)

Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank: A witty indie film about indie filmmaking

Rare are those times that I get to watch a fun and witty Pinoy film like Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank. It may be short, running at around an hour and a half in total, but it's got loads of awesome moments.

The movie is basically a critique on indie filmmaking and its romanticizing of poverty in the Philippines. It opens with a scene where indie film director Rainier (Kean Cipriano) and producer Bingbong (JM de Guzman) brainstorm and review scenes for their indie film "Walang Wala" while production assistant Jocelyn (Cai Cortez) imagines each sequence as they are narrated by the two. With the hopes of bagging awards for the indie movie they will make, Rainier and Bingbong tap in Eugene Domingo to portray their film's central character, a mother from the slums who will sell her child to pedophilia.

The next scenes are pretty much insinuations of how indie filmmaking is behind the camera: the dream (or illusion) and promise of recognition in and outside the country, the negotiations between production and actor, and the real yet cruel side of poverty that these films don't really show its audience. The film presents it in the form of satire, the truth disguised as a chewable tablet. I consider it somewhat of an eye-opener to those who think that filmmaking is a glamorous job -- while it does reap you awards, the process of creating it from start to finish is where the adventure lies. And this film shows it, "as is where is" -style.

Eugene Domingo simply shines in this movie. It's impossible for me to think of another actress who can do what she did here (well, Cherry Pie Picache does come close to a second. Mercedes Cabral probably would, too, though I have to see her first in Ligo Na U, Lapit Na Me). Kean and JM were fun to watch as the young director and producer, respectively, deluded by their ambition to be at par with -- and even surpass -- other indie filmmakers who have won accolades here and abroad.

Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank, for me, raises the bar in storytelling. Writer Chris Martinez and Director Marlon Rivera really did moviegoers a huge favor by releasing this movie full of wit and charm. They, as well as Ms. Domingo and everyone behind it, truly deserve their awards. Watch the film and you'll see why.

Afterthoughts on Captain America: The First Avenger

The last movie before the big Avengers film, Captain America: The First Avenger had a lot of fans of the Marvel franchise in excitement, me included.

Unfortunately, it didn't hold a candle to Iron Man. I guess that was my peg.

Most of the scenes were from the 1940s, when a scrawny, forever-beat-up guy named Steve Rogers aimed to be enlisted in the US Army to fight during the Second World War. Because of his frame and a series of physical maladies (including asthma), he never got to join the force. It wasn't until a doctor, who saw his kind heart through his physical appearance, made a way for him to be a hero -- a superhero, that is.

After being given a superserum, his body changes, stamina and fighting skills and all, and he eventually becomes the poster boy of America's bravest during World War II. A battle against one of Hitler's right-hand men, the Red Skull, eventually leaves Captain America frozen for almost 7 decades in the Arctic. He is taken in by SHIELD agents led by Nick Fury, who is planning to assemble a group of superheroes to defend the modern world.

From a viewer who has little knowledge in the Marvel Universe other than Captain America is their biggest character, I found the movie okay but not as good as, say, Iron Man. There were cheesy moments in the film that could have been done better, in my opinion. Save for the fact that he was always being bullied, there wasn't enough for me to anchor myself to Steve's character. I dunno, probably because it's the treatment, because it was the 40s that the storytelling seemed to pace quite slowly for me.

But well, the easter egg after the credits got me glued to my seat.

Chris Evans looked quite the part. It was amazing how the CG made him into Steve Rogers pre-superserum injection. Kinda like Benjamin Button, if you'd recall. His acting was quite okay. I couldn't say the same for Hugo Weaving, though. I thought that he was more British than German (which he is in real life). When I close my eyes listening to the Red Skull, I hear Elrond. Even Agent Smith. Where's the German accent?

I think the person who stole the show here was Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Philips. He had quite a presence in the film, as well as some of the best and funniest lines.

Despite the storytelling setbacks, Captain America is still a film to watch, as it serves as a prelude to The Avengers. Hopefully, his character is given more substance here, especially that's he's supposed to be head-to-head with Tony Stark. Now that's an encounter I'd like to see.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2: It does all end here

"It all ends here." How apt is this statement to describe the second part of the final Harry Potter movie.

The film starts where part 1 of the Deathly Hallows left off: Voldemort opening the tomb of Albus Dumbledore and finally getting hold of the Elder Wand.

In the next scenes, we see Harry, Ron, and Hermione destroying the rest of the Horcruxes, and the big fight of good vs. evil with Hogwarts as the battleground. Within almost 2.5 hours, a mix of awe, excitement, sadness, and happiness is felt inside the cinema. And as the final shot of the movie's big 3 disappears as the credits roll, I found myself smiling with contentment.

The movie gave the book justice, as it tied all loose ends just as JK Rowling did in the book. While some back stories were omitted, I was happy that Snape's story was detailed here (this is one of my favorite chapters in the whole series). For those who haven't read the book, let me give you a hint: a really big twist.

I felt, though, that the "19 years after" should have been lengthened, but maybe the director thought that it wasn't really essential to have all that dialogue. But I'm so glad of how they did the battle in Hogwarts. That was so cool.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson shine as they did in the past movies (would've wanted a longer Ron-Hermione kiss, hehe!). Ralph Fiennes is really fine (!) as the main antagonist Voldemort. Maggie Smith gave audiences a glimpse of McGonagall's "cool" side. And Alan Rickman is simply wonderful, giving justice to the multi-layered character of Severus Snape.

But if there was one person who stole the show, it would be Matthew Lewis, who plays Neville Longbottom.Who knew that he'd grow up to be so handsome? :)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 is really worth watching, whether in 2D or 3D (doesn't really make much of a difference). The superb storytelling is enough to keep you engaged.

"It all ends." Yes, it does. The movie gives audiences a sort of closure, a memory that would elicit a smile on your face when you recall it afterwards.

Google+: The next big social networking site?

Friendster, MySpace, Facebook, and then comes Google+. Is it the next social networking site to be in?

Late June of this year, Google made a soft run/ soft launch of Google+ wherein only selected users were invited to try out the site. From the looks of it, it's the leading search engine's answer to Facebook.

I fortunately got invited by a friend of mine who was invited to be part of the Google+ testing. Looking at it at face value, you'll see it's like Facebook during its infancy and growth stage.

Very streamlined, without much going on. You'll see a timeline of posts from your Circle (more on that later), suggested friends, chat and Hangout options (more on that, too), and some others.

So what does Google+ have? As you explore your Home page (dashboard), you'll also find these:

Circles - basically your friends, acquaintances, family, colleagues, etc. This section allows you to group your friends in certain categories (you can actually put one friend in more than one Circle). It's Google+'s helpful tool for sharing what you post here. Since your friends are grouped in different Circles, you have total control of sharing and privacy. When you post a status in your dash, you can choose to make it public (visible to everyone even outside your Circle) or choose the Circles whom you want to share your post.

Hangouts - where you can not only chat with friends, but also share videos and other media with them, even while on webcam. Haven't tried it, though.

Sparks - a list of what interests you. On the Sparks page, just enter your interest and Google will list down a search of feeds related to it. And once you added an interest in Sparks, you'll automatically get related feeds.

What's interesting to know also about Google+ is that it seems to consolidate all other info related to your Google account: mail, photos, documents, calendar, Buzz, and soon enough blogs (on Blogger, most probably). I think Google is working on bringing all Google products together here and they'll all be accessible from just one's Google+ account.

So will Google+ be bigger than Facebook? As of now, Facebook seems to be ahead of the social networking game. But who knows? Google works fast and probably in a flash, or once it has games and entertainment apps on the site, Google+ might give Mark Zuckerberg a run for his money.
