Thursday 30 January 2014 (8pm)

“An enormous pleasure…this moving film has the boldness and simplicity of a real master.” Peter Bradshaw, the Guardian

Join us for this special January ‘Film Club Extra’ night where we will be showing Michael Roemer’s pioneering independent film about African-American life, also the first drama to feature a largely black cast. ‘Nothing But a Man’ was made in 1964 but received only limited release. The film has spent the last 50 years in relative obscurity, as a word-of-mouth “lost gem”, but is now being hailed as a quiet masterpiece thanks to its recent re-release.

Set during the growing turbulence of the civil rights era, the story centres on Duff, an itinerant Alabama railroad worker who falls in love with Josie, a schoolteacher and preacher’s daughter. The couple encounter racism as they struggle to maintain respect in a world of prejudice, and their relationship is tested by Josie’s father’s disapproval and Duff’s family dysfunction. Fresh, natural performances and brilliant direction bring insight and realism to this engaging and original film.

“Simply stunning: a sincere, unflinching domestic drama driven by empathy and anger.” Wendy Ide, the Times

Watch Trailer…

Film Club Members: £4.50

Non Members: £6.00

A Film Society of Distinction!

Didn’t we do well?! Having been shortlisted in two categories – Best new Film Society and Best Marketing and Publicity we were up against very stiff competition. Both Sally and Katja from our committee trekked up to London for the day to represent FFC and we are pleased to announce we were runners up in both categories (that’s a very decent second!), just pipped at the post by Newcastle Community CInema and Hurstpierpoint Cinema. We now have smart certificates to proudly display in the foyer of the Merlin Theatre!

It’s a great achievement in the first year for a committee who other than a love and knowledge of film, have really been “making it all up as they went along”, with no previous experience of setting up a film club, and have very busy lives and a restricted amount of time and energy to give! We’ve now come away with more ideas and plans for the future to keep FFC exciting, vibrant and a genuine assets to Frome’s rich cultural diversity.

Frome International Film Festival anyone?

If you would like to find out more about the awards check out http://www.bffs.org.uk

It’s All-American, and Big Apple inspired to tie in with this month’s film, Margaret.

Keren has come up trumps with the help of Frome based native New Yorker, Will Angelero, who has handed over his Mom’s closely guarded secret recipe for Italian Sausage ‘n’ Beans Casserole.

Da menu:

MAINS (£6)
Italian Sausage ‘n’ Beans Casserole
Mac ‘n’ Cheese (that’s a NY style macaroni cheese for the vegetarians)
Waldorf Salad

DESSERT (£3)
New York Baked Cheesecake Bites

Sounds delicious!

Please send your orders back to Kate, who will be sending out an email to members in the next few days.
