Bit Laden: Tienes Sida (EP2)

Bit Laden is a Barcelona-based crew that specializes in creating funky electronic music with fun 8-bit elements.

Made up of Joey Zeke Stolen on guitars, Gumbel – on “little buttons” and El as Fraguas; the trio creates a set of cuts that introduces several elements. Tienes Sida (EP2) is quite short but it’s enough to give listeners a good feel for the band’s music.

The EP contains four tracks that abound in electronica, arcade sounds and a whole mix of genres in the mix.

Combining electropop and a barrage of funky sounds, Tienes Sida is an engaging compilation. Beginning with an unusual intro track, the actual EP doesn’t start once you hit play on the second track.

Agencia Central de Enfermedades combines a bunch of unusual sounds but it sticks to a general beat and rhythm that’s easy to groove along to. It’s easy to picture the cut as background music to an action filled commercial advert or movie snippet. The World’s Greatest Robbery Series presents: H1N1 is another dramatic electronic dub cut that has that Mission Impossible vibe. One of the best tracks to drop on the dancefloor and enjoy.

Finally, the 4-track compilation is finished off with Chimio-Ballad. The longest cut on here, you’ll find an abundance of sweet, dreamy twinkly sounds embedded in the track.

Despite being short, the tracks here are quite compelling. They are perfect for the dancefloor but also for those dark, atmospheric nights where you just want something to chill out to. Take a listen. You can grab this as a free download.

SketchBook Express

Some users refer to SketchBook Express as the Mac Version of Windows Paint, but it’s more powerful. Created by AutoDesk, it offers casual users an easy way to learn how to paint and draw. Those who know little about drawing and painting will learn the ropes quickly.

A blank canvas greets you after launching the app. One window has controls for redo, undo, colors and shapes. Pencils, erasers, pens and brushes are stored in another window. You also have flood fill tools, brushes for sharpening and blurring.

Its draw modes make it a snap to create rectangles, circles and other shapes. You’ve also got markers and airbrushes. You can create up to half a dozen layers for complex drawings. Images can be dragged to a layer for easy editing.

You can access files and settings in the crescent at the bottom of the screen. Drawing is easy; choose a pencil or brush, select a color and start your mastepiece. For Mac touchpads, you just drag your finger. You can use a tablet for more precise creations.

There are a lot of drawing tools. All of them can be customized. Unlike basic paint programs, SketchBook Express has other options such as crayons, developer colors, Apple colors and web-safe hues. The latter is ideal if you want to post images specifically for the web.

If you want more specific shades, use the color wheel. The UI is streamlined, which makes drawing easier. The iPad version is optimized for pens. You can navigate the canvas by using the spacebar.

SketchBook Express is very easy to learn and fun. Whatever your artistic skills, it’s a great way to learn how to draw or just make sketches.

Eva on the Western Castle Island

Eva on the Western Castle Island might not be the most catchy band name out there but it is charming especially when it’s accompanied by great music.

This simple record is more than just indie pop. It’s a lush compilation that warms up the thought and squeezes some melodies out of your bones during those cold winter days.

The band is made up of lead singer, Eva Wong, joined by assist Eero Vesterinen, guitarist Ilkka Saarinen as well as drummer Martin Linnankoski. Together, they create a sound that incorporates fun pop sensibilities and a bit of that rockish vibe.

This self-titled compilation starts off with, California Shrills, which is probably one of the catchiest tracks on the record. Eva’s voice incorporates a nostalgic retro touch that subtly hints of an 80s dance pop sound, reminiscent of Blondie, yet only a bit more pop oriented. The cut is absolutely catchy and delivers a new wave dance touch to the single.

Shaolin Punk features the same uptempo beat while incorporating a bit of Japanese pop touch to it. It’s a melodic single that makes you want to dance and prance around while you play it full volume inside your apartment. Surfing Like a Guru, meanwhile, continues the 80s dance pop trend and flourishes with “ba ba ba’s” that make you want to sing along. It’s one of those cuts that bring to mind pictures of a fun summer evening. Final track, The Lonely Albatross, summarizes the record and possibly represents the band best. Eva’s voice reminds of those Japanese pop singers, high pitched yet melodic.

Overall, it’s a fun little EP that provides plenty of great melodies and rhythms. Worth the listen, if you ask me.

Fast & Furious 6: The Game

Fast and Furious 6 from Kabam is the official tie-in game, and it’s engrossing with a lot of features, such as a solid story mode and drift car racing mode. The stunning graphics, sounds and multiple modes make this an enjoyable ride, and then some. The concept is simple: compete in several races, earn money, upgrade and move on to the next race. It’s simple yet compelling.

The game is easy to pick up but mastering it can be challenging. Unlike other racing games that let you breeze through, Fast and Furious 6 will sometimes require you to complete a couple of races before you can upgrade, adding a nice level of complexity. The other thing that makes Fast and Furious 6 compelling is sheer variety so you won’t get tired of the game.

There are also new races made available daily, giving you more options to earn extra money for the upgrades. As you might expect from a game based on the Fast and Furious movies, there are drag racing and drift racing options here. Drag racing mode is easy to pick up as you just need to flick your finger to shift down or up at the right time. The drifting mode meanwhile will have you keeping track as you drift the car. It can be challenging the first time but you will get used to it over time.

If you love the movie series you will love Fast and Furious 6 with its familiar faces, story and visual themes. The fact that you can upgrade really makes it appealing.

Mockingbird: Patience and Listen EP

Think of the John Mayer’s sound and his guitar expertise and you’ll imagine how great Mockingbird is. Melancholic and beautiful, this album is very moving and emotional.

Mockingbird depicts the events of Ryan Tharin’s life, from the downfalls to the great ones. It was released on March 2013 and was recorded, produced, and mixed by Kenny Gil. All songs are written by Ryan Tharin, which makes this album very intimate and personal.

The songs echo a deep meaning, a journey to the singer’s life. The quality of his voice is husky yet comforting. Listening to his songs on any day will make you think of pondering the things that have happened in your life and the things that you could have done to make it better.

Migration Season welcomes the ears with lines about the backfires of life; about how the truth goes and comes around and that there will come a time when life will turn upside down.

In Royal Family, he sings about his previous band that fell apart. In this song, he claims how much all of his band mates matter to him despite the unfortunate episode. Leather Roots is about unconditional love and acceptance; about wanting a person so much in spite of her flaws and their differences.

All in all, I think that this album touches something inside of you that you never know existed. It is good to listen to if you are on a mood to contemplate and reminisce.

The Zombie Dandies

Short, loud and energetic are the best words to describe this raucous EP from The Zombie Dandies.

These two Frenchmen are obviously fans of the Motley Crue-era punk rock. Creating this nice, fast paced combo of guitars and vocals; the EP is a great picker-upper if you’re feeling like a sleepy head.

The Zombie Dandies are made up of K1000 Zombie on guitars and vocals as well as Marty Dandy on drums, bass and vocals. Together, they produce glam rock, horror and shock rock music like there’s no tomorrow.

Sticking true to their punk rock/rock aesthetics, the songs here run between 1-3 minutes only. Don’t be fooled by the length though, they create punchy music like no other. Kickstarting the noise barrage is Girls&Whisky, a loud, Ramones-influenced cut that induces some serious head banging or jerky movements on the listener’s part. It serves as a great opening cut as it sets the stage for all the energy coming through from the succeeding tracks.

Speaking of energy, Addicted has plenty of it. With slightly shouty (almost whiny) vocals, the song can easily feed a crowd packed in a tiny bar for a rock concert. It’s fast, loud and catchy, just how rock songs should be. Meanwhile, KISS My Boots and Zombie Dandies, finish off the EP.

This French duo can throw a rock party easy with their music. Check out their brand of rock and see if it’s right up your alley.

Deity

Deity is a stealth action game from developer Double++. It uses an isometric view, and while it’s a short game, it’s still pretty good and enjoyable. The mechanics are also very simple and easy to get into. You play a demon and your objective is to infiltrate the temple of angels, and it’s a lot of fun.

The Deity just requires you to play with a mouse. You play the role of a demon who has ventured into a fortress full of knights and angels. You have the power to teleport and possess flames and torches, but your weakness is light. In fact you need to steer clear from the light otherwise you will incur a lot of damage.

But Deity doesn’t leave you defenseless since you got some abilities too. You can sneak around a patrolling knight and teleport in them. This isn’t as easy as it sounds as you need to be careful and not get hit. The mechanics are simple which is why this is so easy to pick up.

The level design is pretty good and is perfect for stealth, and you need to use your strategy to get through the levels. Early in the game the enemies are spread out but they will cluster later on. This will require you to rely on strategy instead of just trying to blow everyone up. The surroundings play an important role and you have to make use of the candles, shadows and statues that are present in the hallways.

The graphics in the Deity are very good and above the average indie game, and the light and shadows really add to the game’s atmosphere. And unlike other stealth games, it never feels repetitive.

Hope: EP

Close your eyes and let yourself be taken into an utmost euphoria while listening to the soothing voice of Hope. Released last November 2004 under her label Sweet Lemon, Hope EP features seven self-written acoustic pieces.

Born and raised in Woodstock, New York, Hope learned to play the piano and guitar at an early age, and by 13, she started to write her own songs. After high school, she headed to Los Angeles to bring her music career into fruition. Among her music influences are Mariah Carey, Sade, and Sting.

With her calming and serene voice, this divine singer indeed stands for the name that she has. Apart from the impeccable rhythm of the tracks on her self-entitled album, the lyrics are written with pouring desire and passion, which makes all the songs heartfelt.

Bring Me Flowers welcomes the ears with Hope’s saccharine vocals that teases the ears. The soft, cooing acoustic arrangement serves as a perfect opener to encapsulate the singer’s musical brand.

The Rain Don’t Last follows with humming that serves like a warm cup of tea on a cold rainy afternoon. The song is about anticipating sunshine after the seemingly endless black clouds; a song to inspire everyone through Hope’s singing prowess. While Lighthouse takes you to the depths of acoustic music. With intricate guitar strings on the background accompanied by Hope’s serenade, you may freely drift into your bed full of dreams.

Closing up the album is Lonely Highway (Live), a soulful serenade where Hope’s voice is taken into greater heights. Press play and let this soulful track fill those cold, rainy nights.

In Hope EP, the tracks exude a kind of harmony that serves as a sedative to the ear. A definitely must hear for those who seek to take a break from the upheavals of a long day.

After you select your image, just go to Edit This Photo and you will see all of the app’s functions. There are many basic and advanced options such as brightness, crop, blemish, redeye and many more complex tools. One of Aviary’s coolest features is Enhance as it automatically enhances any image and there are also Balance, Backlit and Night tools. There are also tools here that allow you to modify an image’s orientation, sharpness, saturation, contrast, warmth, brightness and more. To make adjustments you just have to swipe or tap, it’s that simple.

No app can call itself a photo editor without any filters and special effects, and Aviary is full of them. There are plenty for free, and you can use them in different ways. The stickers for example, can be resized and moved, perfect for adding pizzazz to your image.

There are also advanced photo editing functions such as a meme-type text editor and a drawing tool, and they both have customization options. As for the effects, the redeye works very well and the whiten tools works well for touching up teeth. By and large Aviary is a very good photo editor.
