Today Battlefield Bad Company 2 was released in the EU, and I got it. I played the beta for some time, but this was the first time I got my hands on the final game and the single player campaign.

The story is solid, the graphics gorgeous, destructible environments fun as hell (make your way through a city by blowing holes in walls), and the vehicle combat is still the best there is. What is not so fun is the save-system, which rely entirely on checkpoints. The problem is that it’s just too few checkpoints, so you have to redo areas that can take 5-10 minutes. At one point I had to redo such an area 6 times, and it’s a bit frustrating.

The enemy AI feels really good, with them hiding behind walls, throwing grenades, and generally try to blow up everything you try to hide behind. Your own team-mates (“Bad Company”) is less impressive. Sometimes they act like the “professional” soldiers they are supposed to be, but sometimes they will just blindly follow you around and let you run first into ambush after ambush.

The game let you drive a tank, man a mini-gun on a helicopter, man the gun on a Humvee, drive boats, call in air strikes, and pretty much let you destroy everything you can see. The single player is not too long–it took me about 6 hours or so to play through it all on normal–and it was really good. It’s a nice mix of action, storytelling, and humour.

And that’s not even half of the game. The real game is the multiplayer, and it is even better.

(And for those wondering, yes, I have played Modern Warfare 2, and BFBC2 beats it by a mile.)

I decided that the design looked a bit “too clean”, so I retouched it by adding textures and generally dirtying things up a bit. I think it’s a big improvement so I should remind myself in the future that pretty much everything looks better with some texture.

Really impressed by TypeKit I decided to upgrade my account from Trial to Personal, getting access to a much bigger range of fonts, 5 fonts on the website instead of just 2, and only paying a measly $25/year. Taking into consideration what most fonts they have cost that much individually, I definitely think it’s worth it.

I changed the Urbana font used in headings and menu to Ronnia Condensed, which I think fits better.

As you can see I have done (yet another) site redesign. Although the last one was pretty good, it didn’t exactly suit me like it should.

This time I went with a minimalistic design and straightforward simplicity. The logo already had the laurel leaves surrounding it, so it was just a small step to use the royal purple, or “tyrian purple” as it’s also known. I’m a person who like history, and Roman history most of all – something that could have been guessed from my Tribune theme.

This is the first design where I made use of custom fonts using TypeKit. The fonts used are Adelle for headings and menu, and Droid Sans for body text. Sadly I can’t use TypeKit on my downloadable themes since it’s restricted to a domain, but I might use open-source fonts if I come across any that works well with a design.

I will also start blogging a bit more here, and not just theme related posts. Having several places to blog about different things can be a nuisance, so I will post here about everything. I will also post short notices on theme updates and what has changed in each of them (instead of on the theme page like now).

One of the… no wait – who am I kidding? The most annoying thing about web design is the duty to double- and triple-check the design in browsers other than the one you are testing it for. For me that is Google Chrome, since I love the browser’s designs, functions, and its faithful support to standards.

The point I’m trying to make is that Internet Explorer 6 is crap. It’s pretty much the sole reason you don’t see websites all over that place that look like the Garden of Eden. By having IE6 used by people (and a fair share of the people at that) web design is hampered, and it’s every person’s duty to make sure it’s going away.

Therefore my themes will from now on feature a banner appearing at the top of the page if you are using IE6, informing that you are using a crappy browser (in polite terms) and that you should upgrade.

Don’t like it? Respectfully, up yours.

It’s nice to see how many of you loved my latest theme Comet, and it seems I’m answering 4-5 questions and support issues every day about it. If you like it please spread the word.

Today version 1.2 of the theme is available on Wordpress.org, and I thought I would go through some of the changes (that I remember) I have done to the theme since its release.

The Recent Comments, Twitter, and Search widgets are no longer in a fixed position in the sidebar, and can now we placed wherever you want in the standard widget interface. They are named “[FP] Recent Comments” and “[FP] Twitter” respectively.

The Home link in the menu can now we turned off via the options page.

The post separator can now be turned off via the options page.

There is a new custom field to enter text that will appear in the footer.

There is a wide page template that can be assigned to any page. This expands the main column across the entire space and hides the sidebar. Info how to enable this on the Comet page.

Stylesheets moved back from its own folder to the main so editing to them via the Editor can be done.

…and numerous tiny changes and corrections to the design.

If you have suggestions for changes or features you would like to see, please don’t hesitate to contact me about it.
