What a week! What a journey!

As we wrap the Frozen Jr. show week and head into Shabbat, I want to take a moment to thank each of you for playing such an important part of and supporter of the musical here at Davis.

Frozen Jr, marked the Davis Academy’s 18th musical production. It was our “chai” school musical! Two years ago, our Frozen Jr. was “frozen” one week before the show's opening due to the Pandemic.

The ice thawed and “for the first time in forever”, we welcomed our entire Kehillah to play a part on stage, on the crew, behind the scenes, and in the audience in this beloved Davis tradition and perform once again in front of a live audience. L’chaim!

What an incredible experience it has been working with each of your children.

From the smallest of the small to the tallest of the tall, from our students on-stage to those behind the stage, each child "played" her or his part with great passion, inclusivity, enthusiasm, teamwork, and joy.

Every day, hour, and minute spent with them was a pleasure and truly the most kind, supportive, loving, joyous environment for which we could ever wish.

Watching our Mechinas, Kindergartners, first graders, and the majority of our second graders take to the stage for the first time ever and learn how to bow and wow a crowd was inspiring and precious; hearing the M-2 cast sing out loud for all to hear, perform their dances moves with great conviction, and make friendships with our middle school mentors filled our hearts "with light and love" and was inspirational as it was empowering; seeing the third through fifth graders and Prince Hans' Army take on extra stage responsibilities with fervor, vim and vigor, and incredible enthusiasm makes us terrifically excited for the Performing Arts programs and productions for years to come. How amazingly awesome were ALL of our LS cast members?!

The Middle school cast and crew role modeled beautifully for our lower school cast members and for each other. Their work ethic, maturity, kindness towards each other, and support of each other were exemplary, as were their confident, assured, larger-than-life performances. They created a team atmosphere that shone throughout the entire production process from auditions in November through to the strike of the musical on Tuesday.

Working with your children is a blessing, honor, privilege, and joy.

Thank you for allowing your children to take on the musical adventure this year, for your support, and for your time in helping to make our kids and production shine!

It is such a unique Davis experience to participate in the all-school musical, where ages do not matter, there are no grade levels, where we are one large communal playground, and our classroom is open to every student in the school; every child has a spot on stage in the spotlight.

Theatre is such a unique discipline in which we strive to create strong readers, confident and assured voices, collaborators, and problem solvers all coming together in pursuit of one communal goal to entertain and move our audiences.

I often tell my students that everything we need to learn, succeed, and be career-ready, we learn on and from the stage. Even more so on an educational theatre M-8 grade stage where curiosity, freedom of expression, freedom to fail, freedom to sing and dance, creative play, open-mindedness, courage, risk-taking, making friends of all ages, and joy of learning are the foundations of rehearsal and putting on a play.

A show is the very essence of project management where collaborative learning, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, self-identity, creativity, communication, and creative differences/problem-solving reign supreme.

An actor is a scientist of human behavior and must speak articulately with an empowered voice to convey the story’s meaning to an audience with the dual objective of entertaining an audience and providing an emotional transformation, educational journey, and perspective-changing of an audience. There is no greater power than using one’s own voice to move another human being to laughter, tears, or understanding.

To prepare for a show, problem-solving is key: how to work with others, dealing with creative differences, what if an actor forgets her lines, what if the crew needs to troubleshoot a technical issue, what if the lights go out, what if a prop is missing, how to deal with stage fright, where do all of these actors stand, how do we design abstractly a set-costume-light design that heightens the tone, mood, feeling, sentiment of the play, etc... It is an exercise in joy, imagination, creative play, grit, collaboration, growth mindset, business, resilience, and empowerment.

The process of putting together a play requires creativity, empathy for others, compassion, perspective-taking, the ability to create worlds never seen or to re-examine history, cultures, civilizations, to take note our of past, explore our present, and define our future.
Empowering children’s voices is the key to making sure all children continue to speak out and up; to be given platforms for presenting and performing.

We are all players on a stage, and "performing" is the one universal skill used in every career: an attorney, a doctor, a salesperson, a hedge fund manager, a teacher, a politician, a CEO. This is a skill that is most vital to teach at the onset of formal education. The ability to speak well publicly and articulate one’s ideas in a clear, persuasive manner in which another person will “buy” your idea is a core foundational block of career readiness and life. Theatre prepares all of us for life beautifully!

Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

What a flurry of Frozen fun we had melting hearts with our heartwarming take of acceptance, magic, adventure family, and true love.

We shared love and laughter throughout our entire journey and we cannot wait to share our universal, all-school classroom, playground, and enrichment experience with each other again next year!

M-2 cast members are welcome to bring a coloring book/crayons to color during the show while they are waiting in their rooms.

Mechina- 2nd grade needs to arrive promptly at 12:15 pm and report to the stage promptly at their call time so that the entire cast M-8 can run their bows prior to the house opening and audience entering the theatre at 12:30 pm. After M-2nd grade runs their bows, they will head to their respective rooms to get dressed in costume.

There are cue lists in each of our M-4 grade rooms which tell you when each group needs to be brought down for their numbers and where they should go.
Every child's costume is labeled and has been assorted with their proper items. Please help keep each child's costume/items together during the show.
There is a script in each of our M - 4th-grade rooms so that you may follow along with the live stream which will be on in each room.
When you arrive, please report directly to the grade level room in which you have signed up to volunteer.

We need volunteers in several rooms for several shows; the most pressing is the 1st and 2nd-grade room for tomorrow at 1pm and Mechina and Kindergarten room at 7pm. It takes a wonderful, huge, “all-in” supportive village to help our students shine on the stage and our room parent volunteers play a vital part in the children’s success on stage and their experience on show days. ALL LS CAST should be picked up & leave between their 1pm and 7pm Sunday shows and return at their call time for the Sunday 7pm show.

LS Cast members should be picked up from their respective dressing rooms.

Please make arrangements for lunch and meals in between shows.

MS CAST & CREW may stay or leave Sunday.

If you stay, pack a meal and extra snacks to eat.
If you leave, go get food & eat before your next call time.

Reminder- please do not send your child in with wearable technology on their wrists. Thank you!

MS CAST NOTES:

ALL MS CAST PLEASE APPLY YOUR OWN SKIN TONE FOUNDATION PRIOR TO ARRIVAL. You must also have your compression undergarments on!

No Jewelry- Please do not wear or send your children with any bracelets, hair ties, rings…etc.

Funky Town J - All students are strongly encouraged to bring/wear deodorant as this will be a long day under the lights.

· Nails - If you want to do your nails, pick a color that matches your costumes. Otherwise, please leave your nails plain.

· Hydrate – Everyone should bring a nice-sized water bottle so that they can stay hydrated throughout the run.

WE ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO OUR SHOW OPENING!

Today was an incredible day as we watched all of our cast and crew take to the stage in their costumes, makeup, hair, and roles.

They performed beautifully with such Ruach!

It gave me chills and it will give you chills and all the feels as well!

A few things about tomorrow:

When our M-8 cast and crew arrive for rehearsal, please come through the back of the theatre when you arrive. This is the back of the school/ the ramp where the baseball field and cafeteria are located. The theatre door will be open for you. Please do not enter through the front lobby doors as there will be parent-teacher conferences going on.

MS Students and Crew may start arriving at 7am if they would like a bit of extra time to get prepped and organized.

M-2 should come in makeup tomorrow.

LETTER FROM MR. FRANK

Dear Frozen Families,

With great excitement for the upcoming fabulous shows, I wanted to share an update on how we will handle masking with our thespians and crew members as well as the impact this has on the make-up requirements for your children.

MASKING

The following will be our mask policy for those participating in the school musical during dress rehearsals and performances, beginning Thursday, March 17th, and through the completion of the show on Tuesday, March 22nd:

Masks will be required for all guests, volunteers, helpers, and audience members at all times.
Masks will be optional for all students participating in the play while on the crew, performing, or inside the dressing rooms.
Any student who may demonstrate symptoms while at school will be required to mask and we will be in contact for the next steps.

While this policy is not consistent with some of the restrictions that occur during normal school hours in terms of masking when with multiple grades or in our halls, it is consistent with how we have handled Middle School athletics and other optional activities. We understand that this approach may be met with excitement by some and with anxiety by others so as with anything, we will respect each family’s choice for how they wish their child to participate. Families who wish for their child to remain masked will continue to have that option.

If you would like your child to remain masked, please let me know as soon as possible so…

I can share this information with Kendrick.
For the Mechina - 4th Grade Students, we can inform the room volunteers for the rehearsals and shows.
For the 5th-8th grade students, we can account for wig and mic placements.
We can plan accordingly regarding make-up.

MAKEUP & HAIR INFORMATION FOR DRESS REHEARSAL & THE SHOWS

Students who would prefer to stay masked while performing and inside the dressing rooms do not need to wear makeup.* ( 5th-8th grade performers who are masking still need to do eye makeup and masacara please). They are expected to wear a mask from home so they are as comfortable as possible for them to perform in.

Students who are choosing not to wear a mask while performing and inside the dressing rooms will be asked to come to school with their makeup on (please use links below to see what makeup is expected to be applied before arrival) and will therefore enter the building without a mask. We ask that they please report directly to the theatre or their assigned dressing rooms upon arrival.

SCHEDULE UPDATE

The Middle School participants asked for an additional rehearsal (and successfully lobbied us) for this Wednesday, March 16th from 3:45 pm to 6:15pm as they feel it would help them immensely since we have learned 99% of the blocking/choreography to the show today as everyone in the cast was present for the first time for almost the entire Sunday today (yay!) but will not have a full run-through of the show without stopping until dress rehearsal on Thursday,

Wednesday 3/16 is a sharp 6:15 dismissal time; we will be reviewing notes from 6 to 6:15pm and clarifying any blocking questions/tech/prop/mic issues, etc...

This is rehearsal is ONLY for the MS Cast and the Crew.
This is optional. This day, those who have soccer games or going to Synagogue in the evening are not required to come to this rehearsal since this rehearsal was added today.

PLEASE REMEMBER IT IS VITAL TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR ENTIRE CAST & CREW THAT YOY STAY FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION OF YOUR CALL TIME/REHEARSAL.

All rehearsals are now mandatory, barring illness, as we prepare to dazzle and amaze over 2,000 guests with the work of the over 130 students in the show.

The limited time we have left means every hour and minute is important. This last week of rehearsals are the most intensive blocking and choreography as costumes, props, and scene transitions are now incorporated with the singing and movement we learned in January and February.

We sadly cannot accommodate any further early dismissals or late arrivals without impacting scene involvement or placement as these disrupt scenes, blocking, and choreography.

We “spring forward” one hour this weekend!

Pizza and Snacks Reminder

3rd- 8th-grade students will be able to purchase pizza again this Sunday.

We will be selling Papa John’s cheese pizza for $1.50 a slice.

Please send cash for your kids if they want to do so, and a bagged lunch if they do not.

Mechina- 2nd grade students are only called for a couple hours, so we will not sell pizza to them until the mid-week tech rehearsals (see below)

Beginning tech week (Sunday, March 13th) all students will receive a snack from us, and all students should plan on bringing a water bottle.

Anyone who wants to purchase pizza for the duration of the below rehearsals must bring your money to Mr. Frank by this Sunday, March 13th to pre-order.

REMINDER MS & LS ADDITIONAL COSTUME & SHOE INFORMATION!

Please bring items in a bag marked with your child’s name and grade. THESE ARE DUE THESE WERE DUE LAST WEEK.

There are a few base layer/undergarment needs for each grade and shoe needs. The shoe needs are specific to the stage and the ability to dance/perform safely and also not tear up the stage flooring. Thank you!

STAR WALL

We will be creating a STAR WALL to feature our amazing young thespians. By THIS Sunday, March 13th, please send in a 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10 headshot/school picture/close up photo of your child (only your child in the picture please), with their name and grade printed on BOTH the back of the picture and the envelope you submit it in. You may drop this off at Sunday practices or leave it with the front desk of either campus. Please write on the envelope Star Wall.

FROZEN VOLUNTEERS

With almost 120 performers, we need all hands on deck volunteering to help make our performers shine.

Please consider volunteering; there are many, many open volunteer spots that need to be filled.

It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a full battalion to make the imagination of Kendrick come to life and shine through our kids on stage.

We are thrilled to be able to offer many fun volunteer opportunities on both days of our dress rehearsals and during each of our 4 shows. In an effort to streamline volunteers responsibilities in each of the assigned dressing rooms, we kindly ask that volunteers try to commit to BOTH: 1 shift on either day of Dress Rehearsals AND 1+ spot as a Room Volunteer at ANY of our 4 shows. Having volunteers at each show who have an understanding of timing, door entrance and exits, correct costumes, etc. is extremely helpful to both the kids as well as the other volunteers running around during each show.

Dress and Show Help:

1. Grade Level Slots – This is extra hands inside of the holding/dress areas for each grade level. This responsibility includes help with getting in to and maintaining costume, assistance with props, and help with cues for in and out (we will give directions on all of this).

2. Concession – the fastest 20 minutes you have ever spent with friends peddling water at light speed J This is help with setting up and running our pre-show and mid-show water, Fan-O-Grams and Merchandise sales.

3. Make-up and Hair – Help transform our middle school thespians to ready for stage performers (lower school students come with make-up already applied {lots of info on this coming in the weeks ahead}. This role is not listed on the spread sheet, but if you are interested, please let Mr. Frank know and he will collect your names so that Ms.Kendrick can let me know how many she needs as we get closer.

Cast Party will be held during the Friday (March 18th) dress rehearsal. The party will be at the end of our dress rehearsal, snacks, and drinks will be provided by The Davis Academy. This party is only for cast and crew members. Volunteers who are assigned to help on this day will also attend and assist.

Letter from Gift Chair

Dear Parents,

I am writing to ask you for your support in recognizing our Director Kendrick Phillips and several other people who have gone over and above to make our show the huge success that it will be. Each year Kendrick, our director, works tirelessly, long after rehearsals are over to make sure our school production resembles something you may have seen on Broadway – staging the show, creating the design of the costumes, designing the sets, props, creating all of the choreography, shopping, and more.

There are also a number of dedicated staff and volunteers who give countless hours of their time to ensure the high quality of our production. For those of you that are new to this experience, you will be amazed to see close to 130 children ages 5-14, come together for some unforgettable performances. FROZEN SHIRTS

Our LS CAST thespians will receive their t-shirts at rehearsal this Sunday. These shirts can be worn beginning Monday 3/14 in place of the Davis uniform shirts.

Students are still expected to wear uniform compliant bottoms, socks, and shoes. The shirts can be worn from Monday, March 14th through the end of the shows (Tuesday, March 22nd).

A Final Word about the final TWO WEEKS

This coming Sunday marks two weeks until the show opens.

All rehearsals are now mandatory, barring illness, as we prepare to dazzle and amaze over 2,000 guests with the work of the over 130 students in the show.

The limited time we have left means every hour and minute is important. The last few weeks' rehearsals are the most intensive blocking and choreography as costumes, props, and scene transitions are now incorporated with the singing and movement we learned in January and February.

We sadly cannot accommodate any further early dismissals or late arrivals without impacting scene involvement or placement as these disrupt scenes, blocking, and choreography. If you have a conflict please email Mr. Frank (dfrank@davisacademy.org) to discuss.

Pizza and Snacks going forward

3rd- 8th-grade students will be able to purchase pizza the next two Sundays (March 6th & 13th).

We will be selling Papa John’s cheese pizza for $1.50 a slice.

Please send cash for your kids if they want to do so, and a lunch if they do not.

Mechina- 2ndgrade students are only called for a couple hours, so we will not sell pizza to them until the mid-week tech rehearsals (see below)

Beginning tech week (Sunday, March 13th) all students will receive a snack from us, and all students should plan on bringing a water bottle.

Additionally, Mr. Frank will be collecting pizza money and orders for any student who would like to purchase pizza during our tech week rehearsals.

We will only be collecting money on the 6th or 13th for pizza purchases for the duration of our rehearsals.

If you want your child to order for any of the days listed above, please send in money either Sunday the 6th or 13th.

STAR WALL

We will be creating a STAR WALL to feature our amazing young thespians. By Sunday, March 13th, please send in a 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10 headshot/school picture/close up photo of your child (only your child in the picture please), with their name and grade printed on BOTH the back of the picture and the envelope you submit it in. You may drop this off at Sunday practices or leave it with the front desk of either campus. Please write on the envelope Star Wall.

FROZEN COSTUME VOLUNTEERS

With almost 120 performers to costume with many having two costumes, we need all hands on deck volunteering to help make our performers shine in their costumes.

Please consider volunteering this Sunday as there are many, many open volunteer spots that need to be filled.

Come for 30 minutes or for as long as you like!

General Admission Tickets

Ticket purchases will be all completed using our online system.
You will be able to select your seats, pay online with a credit card, and print out your receipt/ticket confirmation (which will serve as your ticket on the day of the show).
Ticket sales will open online on TOMORROW, THURSDAY, March 3rd in the pre-dawn hours.
The school community will be emailed this link in the Friday Shabbat Shalom Message, which will enable cast members and their families to purchase tickets before the whole school community has this link.
