And then... it happened... that moment when you know you are going to change everything when one central piece inspires a complete REDO on the cheap.

STILL haven't totally completed either one but that doesn't stop me... from capitalizing on a golden opportunity....

SO people were asking me questions about the PORCH redo but the part I posted about people were / are curious about the cost of things that I did and what I used to do the REDO..... so I just want you to know I will do another porch redo info post and also one for this post. I am terrible about the "before photos" seriously I don't have the brain that thinks that way , to take photos of things I am not happy with. (hmmmm thats kinda intriguing really) but back to the subject.

I just get excited about the possibilities now. hopefully you guys enjoy seeing too.

This booth (without the table) came from Latitude's restaurants renovation. I asked for the booth I was sitting in and my waiter made sure he let me know when it became available. My friend Julie responded to a post I made asking for some ideas from my friends and some pro's I know and look what Julie found!! She found the perfect table and I was able to score it for $75 from the Marketplace.

I covered it with a tablecloth but the colors match a credenza I have in the room prefectly . Another update will follow once some of the items I have for sale go ... they are stacked on it and its feeling crowded getting ready for my bohemian treasures pages... more on that later too. FOR NOW I have a sharing group on FB "anjies stuff for sale." getting rid of extra things and things I save from other places. :)

My Mediumalism Journey inspired by Marie Kondo......

So everyone is watching Marie Kondo's videos, reading her book , quoting her and "Tidying UP" their lives. This is to bring the reader / viewer "joy" in their lives that were otherwise classified as "chaotic" or "organized chaos at its best." So many more people than you would expect are hiding their hoarding or some (like me) letting it all hang out . With the deaths that all came back to back in my life like a 1-2-3-4-5 punch. The first being my father and the latest being my daughter and other close relatives in between, stacking stuff has become one of my least favorite past times (but the one I do most often). So while I don't "need" anything the things around me that have always "done the job" have needed replacing due to my neglect while dealing with internal things my external starting morphing into being ... "THE ONE AND THE SAME."

So, "project happiness" was on my bookshelf and the very first recommended step in that book is "TIDY UP" ... step one to happiness. I read it but I didn't believe it. How could it? Nothing could fix me ever again, nothing would really make me feel lighter , or happier.

Then along came this .....

Something I needed to do , replace the vanity and sink in the master bedroom. The old one was made by my neighbor, Ed, 25? years ago.... yep.... time sure does fly.

I saw it on the facebook Marketplace, made a counter offer (no pun intended) and bought that beauty. This move .... had been suggested to me by a dear friend that brought me a pillow ....after my daughter died.... Sharon...... she was so sweet and loving but I don't remember most of what we talked about. Its like the old saying "people don't always remember what you said, but they remember how you made them feel." It was just like that... she said something like "I got a new living room set and it made me get rid of things and it made me happy" she said. I don't remember my reply , or really much else except the beautiful pillow.... but.... I remembered that vividly when I got this vanity. .... and I remembered Sharon and her very wise words of wisdom and how her words ... brought me joy.

With a ~~little~~ lot of help from my hubby we got the vanity in and the old one out. Hooked up the sink for a few more dollars and WALA it was now time, no procrastination allowed to unload the STUFF and evaluate if keeping the said STUFF brought me "joy." There was no real joy in keeping bandaids, qtips, gauze etc to be completely honest but there was no way I could throw those type of things away , even if there was no room for them, I would need to rehome those items "just in case." I don't think I have seen any footage that addresses that kind of thing. I am learning though. YEARS of "stuffing things" that I may need or use again in the future. My frugal self .... and my hoarding self.... cross paths somewhere in there and make a "happy medium" a Mediumalism I need to be ... maybe not "completely happy and light" as a minimalist but Zen for me for this moment. Maybe I can have a round 2 later.... I excuse and allow myself to be prepared and still purge.

not just SPELL IT OUT FOR ME ? LOL ... I love words....don't you? I got a $20 credit for signing up for their credit card and save 20% for signing up for emails there. I went through a rebate site to purchase too so both items cost me about $7 shipped.

So I gave away and donated lots but I am still left with the laundry basket 1/2 full on my floor. I am still left with a toilet to replace and another wall to revamp.... I will add updates to that 1/2 of the room after a quick "fix" for the clawfoot tub's enamel... ya see it just keeps going for me once I start

and I have to donate and give my things away to get them out quickly and surely before I find another home for things. But you? May want to sell some of your stuff to make money back if so

I feel like I have been living in a "movie" ... in someone else's life... not my own.

Things got "shaken" up in my world , my house, my circle ... in every aspect of the word when my daughter passed away over the summer.

I haven't really taken good care of things and with the "destruction" around me there was also destruction inside of me. I wrote about some of it on my other blog and you can read about that more here if you like but for this page I want to talk about how the very act of being frugal or not being frugal affected my general attitude and health.

When I have experienced loss, sadness, depression of great magnitude this time, just as in the past.... something changes inside of my brain and the importance of being frugal literally feels like a switch inside of me. I go from pinching a penny to "I don't care what it costs if it makes me feel better for 2 minutes" in a red hot second It takes no time at all for that mindset to kick in and I immediately feel entitled to not being frugal, not being responsible, not being good with money , and excuse my french but I go to "I just don't give a flying you know what." That helps me for a minute ...and then depresses me more in the long run. When those companies tack on "fees" and "penalties" because I didn't give a flying you know what and now I give a flying you know what.

So when I heal , even a smidgeon, you might find me cooking more and more creatively and frugally .... as I did for the past few days..... I made the best tasting fruit cake ever imagined.

Let me get this straight , I HATE FRUITCAKE .

I always thought that someone ..... someone should make a delicious non developed pallet enjoying cake or bread full of fruit and then maybe throw some alcohol "sauce" on it like bread pudding...... that someone .... yesterday .... was ME ...... my particular self ... used what I had on hand to put this together and everyone knows that to soothe myself .... its tropical all the way... all day long ....so you guessed it ...

I MADE A TROPICAL FRUITCAKE .... that actually TASTES GOOD!

If I were to go out and BUY the ingredients to make this delightful treat ...it would be EXPENSIVE but ... because I was saving the items that would have otherwise gone bad in my fridge .... it all of the sudden became a FRUGAL ACT ...... cost no more money , I had to buy nothing , I had to "save" something from dying and becoming compost in our little "strip o' dump for discarded things....

That My friends ... was THERAPY ..... cheap therapy..... another FRUGAL ACT , I didn't even have to leave home to feel better.....

"Normalcy" is therapy for a brain that is traumatized and a heart that is doing overtime , just to keep up. My soul is damaged ... my new "normal" is much different than my normal from the spring 2018..... and while many of the changes in me are not "good ones" .... and are sad...... but I found a silver lining...... in my new normal

FRUIT CAKE CAN mean something "GOOD" not necessarily a bad Crazy.... it can TASTE GOOD can be frugal and can be DONE! :)

SHOPPING AT HOME ! From your Fridge / Pantries etc... part 1

How many times have you heard "we don't have anything to eat in the house?" I know I have heard that many times while raising my kids and having a house full of kids, friends, friends kids and now their kids.

When my kids were young I cooked dinner most nights at home, going out to eat only on rare occasions or the necessity of eating at the ball field more times that I care to admit. We would have a "leftover" night about every 10 days ... and I would just take everything out of my packed fridge and put it out on the counters and the kids (and whomever else was here) could put anything they wanted on their plate. I had not a care if they wanted "all meat," "all veggies," "all bread," or what ever ...at the end of the buffet line it would be my time to dump what was left in the trashcan.

I learned a new trick after time and that was "freezing" the leftovers and making the more healthy meal of "soup" with the left overs of whatever was left. HA! this worked well too... after time and tried and true methods I have become somewhat of an expert of "pantry" or "fridge" shopping and have blogged about these experiences in the past.

I was feeding my family on $30 or $40 a week way before it was cool and could throw together a zero cost week with little effort. I haven't blogged or done a pantry challenge in a while. This month I had to put out more than $1K in taxes for 6 months of real estate and personal property and felt the need to make up for "lost money."

I have an empty outdoor freezer and need to restock it... we had a faux pas incident at easter and lost all of the items in it, and there were many.

In complete contrast, I also have an indoor fridge and a couple of pantries. I have stockpiled over the years , have stockpiled in excess recently and have a well stocked pantry with many expired items in it I am sure. Its time to "clean this up."

So today...... I started the challenge...

with a little hesitation I am going to introduce you to one of my 3 pantries, my fridge and my freezer... (all of which my husband and daughter made fun of last night at dinner out) ... so I am sure the posting of this will bring them a tiny bit of discomfort or humor... not sure which..

as you can see they are CHOCKED FULL TO THE BRIM and are in desperate need of cleaning out

DAY #1 BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE TIME

***smoothies at home are somewhat of a modern day meal. My kids would have loved to have a "milkshake" for dinner than actually sit and eat many times, this I know for sure. Too bad I didn't think of this then but ... at least I know now.

this was my FIRST round of adding things to the blender from the freezer: frozen kale, frozen grapes, a tiny bit of left over frozen blueberries

Checking the Fridge.... I found a granny smith apple, 2 apricots, ginger root and some pecans.... since there is no "recipe" I follow any longer for my smoothies , its basically anything goes....

I had this in my pantry for an extended amount of time. I bought it from the clearance rack , knowing that this aloe water would be good for "burns" or "sunburns" not really thinking I would drink it. Well I never used it for first aid on the outside so.... opened it up, tasted a very tiny amount and didn't mind the taste so in went a splash to the blender.

I then scooped 2 tablespoons of Collegen that my friend recommended to me recently for good measure . (hair, skin, nails)
and WHIRL AWAYYYY

and there you have it.... soooo very delicious, nutritious and not to mention helping to clean out my stockpiles too... I am sipping on this while typing this blogpost and my mind is already getting excited about what's next on the menu!

Smoothie recipes are plentiful on the internet if you are the type that feels like they cannot be creative on their own. I have been inspired by ordering and enjoying the freezer / blender ready smoothie cups HERE I took advantage of the 3 free with order and loved them. I quickly realized that the most unlikely pairing and blending of ingredients made for the best tasting smoothies ever. So here I am working like a scientist with no beakers SLAYING IT if I do say so myself.

Now not only am I getting healthy from these smoothies but I am making some GOOD DIRT with my compost ... AND putting water in my VITAMIXER (won from an internet contest) to make some healthy water to water my plants outside ... yes... you can feed your plants REAL FOOD in the water instead of chemicals.

Budget Payments: with the extreme weather in the USA our utility bills .... well they vary hugely.... I have my electricity set up to be the "same" every month and now my gas too (its a phone call) and poof , its done!

NO TRASH PICK UP : we take our own trash to the dump , free..... this is one bill that I would opt to pay if I were rich ... but for now we take our own. Composting the "live" stuff and burning leaves (allowed in our county)

LEARNING: drying flowers now for a REALLY COOL DIY project that I hope "pans out" stay tuned for more on this!!!

Ketchup! Have you ever thought about Ketchup? I have. Read your labels on your ketchup bottle and see that there are some ingredients in MOST ketchups that I don't know what they are or nor do I want to. BUT .... I love ketchup! I don't like to spend a lot of money just to be healthy but I like everyone else enjoy being healthy, participating in healthier lifestyles and not paying more money than I need to at the grocery store.

I make many of our salad dressings (thousand island, italian, ranch), condiments, cocktail sauce, BBQ sauce and anything else that I can to save money, when I can't get free or close to free at the grocery store. To that point, people often speak of how inconvenient it is to go "scratch" rather than pre-made. In this recipe I am using a pre-made product (tomato paste) that can and would be scratch except that I paid about 4 or 5 cents for a boatload of tomato sauces and pastes at Food Lion a while back.

ALL OF THE ITEMS BELOW WERE ALREADY IN MY CABINET except the White Wine Vinegar. I picked that up on sale and it will go a long way for this recipe and a couple of others that I have on the list to make next (mayo etc)!!! SO HERE IT IS :

Of course you can alter , add, subtract to any of the ingredients I used to make it your own...
Everyone's Tastes are Different!

INGREDIENTS:

6 ounces Tomato Paste

1/4 cup Dark Brown Sugar ( I used Truvia Blend)

1/4 teaspoon Dry Ground Mustard

1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt

1/4 scant teaspoon Cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon of Ground Clove

1/8 teaspoon of Onion Powder

2 pinches of Allspice

Grind some Garlic (to taste)

1 pinch of Cajun Seasoning

1/3 cup Water

4 tablespoons White Wine Vinegar

Mix them ALL UP ... its that easy , some measuring spoons , whisk and some jars is all you need.

The Finished Product!!! Will last about a month in your FRIDGE!

My Ketchup will not last that long.... but if you need it to last longer then you can "can" them to seal and store. This is especially helpful if you have a bunch of tomatoes in the summer!

I will be posting more of these easy smeasy recipes for you in the future to help with your "little things" that adds up to SAVING MONEY and KNOWING what you are putting in your body, all of the ingredients I used I can pronounce!!!

I am already starting to get emails from people that are either including Black Friday ads in notes to me, sending me the "secret" sales etc....... so I thought this would be the perfect time to address the BLACK FRIDAY THING...........

Anyone that has been a freelancer for a year or more knows that "anjie doesn't do black friday!" EGADS, YIKES, UGH, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yep that is right anjie doesn't even LIKE black friday, much less look forward to it as a day of shopping.........

MY HUMBLE OPINION:

I shop "black friday" prices and discounts ALL YEAR LONG......... why in the world would I want to get up before daylight to "fight" with traffic, parking, cashiers, customers etc and listen to all of the CHAOS to get a deal when I can .............uh..............

stay home in my pj's and listen to the first day of Christmas music and recoup from Thanksgiving?

Now if you are a newbie and haven't been STASHING gifts / freebies/ gdas etc all year long and now just need to fill in the gaps, ABSOLUTELY this MAY be worth it to you, for me.........

Barnes and Noble summer reading program is back . Summer Reading Triathlon, gives out a free book to each child who complete 3 reading triathlon activities.

There are many free books to choose from and there's something for every kid in grades 1-6.

Scholastic

Scholastic is offering a summer reading challenge where kids can read and then go online to record the minutes they've read this summer. They'll also be able to take weekly challenges to earn rewards.
