Cut in butter with a pastry blender or use a paddle on kitchen aid stand mixer (what I use). Blend until the mixture looks like fine crumbs. Stir in milk until dough leaves side of the bowl. The dough will be soft and sticky. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 10 times. Roll or pat to 1/2 inch thick. Cut with floured biscuit cutter or glass. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. I add a little bacon grease if sausage doesn't look greasy enough. Quickly stir in flour, salt, and pepper. Slowly add milk while whisking everything together. Constantly stir and cook on high until it starts to boil/ bubble and thicken. I make specific goals and try to make smaller ones to reach the larger goals by the end of the year of the end of the time I allowed. My most important goal this year is to spend more time with family. I try to make this goal a priority each year. I do get time with my children and husband, but I want to spend more time with extended family and friends as well. I also want to continue to pay off our debt so we will have money to GIVE to people in need. I also want to eat even more vegetables than I already do in hopes to continue my weight loss goals and improve my level of health and fitness. Have a great weekend!&nbsp;</div><ul><li>Order Seeds, Plants, and Supplies</li></ul>If you have not decided what you are going to plant in your garden, now is the time to decide. Now is the time to get your seed catalogs and start ordering. The past few years more people have been gardening and the seed companies have had to back order almost all of my purchases! I will have a separate post just on seed and supply companies from which to order.<br />You can set up a recipe card file system or make one up on your computer. Number each bed or area and note what was planted or what was done on numbered cards. Keep a card for each plant variety as well as insects, weeds, and pests. Record ordering information, planting dates, when insects arrive, yields, and other observations. Cary the file box with you to the garden area.<br /><ul><li>Prepare beds for peas, greens, and spinach.</li><li>As seeds arrive, store the packets in a cool, dry place, in air tight containers or bags, categorize and label. Carry moisture proof bags to the garden when you plant.</li><li>Feed the birds.</li><li>Out up and clean out bird houses.</li><li>Harvest broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, greens, kale, spinach, parsley, cilantro.</li><li>Take soil samples for analysis.</li><li>Prune fruit trees and berries.</li><li>Make compost.</li><li>Check water pipes for protection against freezing.</li><li>Use coal ashes, sand, or sawdust to cover dangerous icy spots.</li><li>For horses, look frequently at the caulks and never let them go smooth shod, the strains and sprains occasioned by going over slippery ground being the frequent causes of spavins, splints, and other lameness. Horses exposed to drafts of air do not need blanketing in the stable, except when they are war from recent exercise. Unblanketed they will eat a little more, but have better health.</li><li>Cows- Dry cows coming in the spring need just as good feed and care as if in full milk, but the food need not be so fattening. Roots are a very useful addition to their feed and they should have the liberty of a sunny yard several hours of day.</li><li>Young cattle- Spring calves are making the most rapid growth when cool weather comes on. They should receive the same treatment as older stock and not be wintered in the yards and open sheds. They will eat less and grow faster for warm stabling, besides their manure will be worth more.</li><li>Feeder Cattle- Winter is the best time to feed up beef to take to the butcher. We took our first load to the butcher on January 4th.&nbsp; We will take more in February and in May.</li><li>Sheep- Stock sheep should have access to the range of good-sized yards or pastures and the shelters of warm sheds to which they have free access during the day and are confined to at night. Ewes will do much better with a little grain daily and their lambs will be stronger. Make sure that all sheep get their allowance of feed and do not get too much as they may suffer for it.&nbsp;</li><li>Swine- Give brood sows good, plain feed, not too fattening. If they have made their growth (and old sows are the best breeders) they will do best on the really poor fare. They will even winter well on clover hay with a few nubbins now and then if they have good warm pens and plenty of litter.</li><li>Fowls- Give special care toward the latter part of the month. With extra feeding and protein, they will lay freely especially if they have a warm chicken house for the winter. Large broilers may be ready for harvesting by the time asparagus is ready to cut. It may be well to set hens as early as the last of this month. It is not worthwhile in raising chicken for stock or for autumn or winter marketing to have them hatch before the middle of April.</li><li>Now is the time to also think about wood for next year as well. “In peace prepare for war!” It’s a good time to cut firewood even if you have a bountiful supply.</li><li>Clearing Land- A great season to cut alders and willows, dig ditches, blast rocks, etc.</li><li>Building- Timber may be bought and frames cut for new buildings and alterations of houses or other structures may go on as well as in winter as any time since contractors are desirous for work. We can see this by comparing ourselves to a new shirt. What does the new shirt look like? What happens when we get dirt on it? The dirt is like the sin in our lives making us unclean. Is this the way God is? No. He is perfect and spotless and He will allow no sin to touch Him! That is why He would not talk or be with us anymore until the dirt or sin in our lives was gone. God, however, did not want to be away from us. He planned for Someone pure to wash our sins away and bring us back to Him forever! Do you know who that someone was? Jesus took all our sins on Himself and died on the cross so our sins could be forgiven. He was willing for the people to put nails in His hands and feet because that was the way to nail our sins to the cross. He loved us so much that He was willing to die for us even when we were unclean and had sin in our hearts. A long time ago, God had made a promise or a covenant with the children of Israel. As long as they obeyed His Ten Commandments, He provided for them, but if they broke any laws He punished them. Can you imagine every time you gave a dirty look to your siblings or parents God would turn His back on You? That would be hard to live by, wouldn’t it? God saw people continue to break His laws. In spite of all their sins, He still loved them. He decided to give them a new promise, or a New Covenant. He would write His law on their hearts. Do you know what that means? God sent His Son Jesus Christ to earth to save us from our sins. If we ask Jesus into our hearts, He will forgive all the bad things we do. However, with finances extra tight and basically non-existent for us at the moment, we are keeping things even simpler this Christmas season.<br /><br />My children have a LOT of THINGS! They do not necessarily have the fanciest gadgets and gizmos out there, but they have plenty of things. This year, we are going to weed out some of their things and give them to children who really have nothing. We try to do this every year in preparation of presents they will receive; however, this year, it is more to get rid of our clutter as well as bless others. One of the best things to do when you are having a difficult time yourself is to help and serve others. This year, my children realize they will not get Christmas presents as they have in the past. They will have something, but not as much as they usually receive. We just do not have the money to do it. I am working on homemade gifts, and fortunately, I shop all year to find items on sale and save them for Christmas. I am so thankful for shopping this way especially this year since we are having such a difficult time financially.<br /><br />One of our family traditions is to make Christmas cookies. I saved money and ingredients this year and I was able to make these cookies for the children and my husband. It has been his family's tradition for a very long time to bake Christmas cookies together. We still made them this year.<br /><br />We always get a tree off of our property and still have our decorations and are planning to make some new decorations this year with things we have around the house because some of our Jesse Tree ornaments have fallen apart (some are from when my husband was a child). We will save money this way and keep things simple.<br /><br />One of the biggest things we have each year which is also a tradition of my husband's family is to have an elaborate Christmas Eve party with just our family to celebrate Jesus's birth. I plan to get creative this year with things we already have in hopes to still have a beautiful and fun Christmas Eve party but not spend very much money. We may not have all of our usual foods, but we will hopefully, still have a great time!<br /><br />I believe we will still have a wonderful Christmas this year even if we are spending less and barely anything at all! Our budget is typically $1500 for Christmas and that includes all 8 of our children's gifts, gifts for my 6 nieces and nephews, gifts for my husband's side of the family, gifts for my Sunday School class, sending out Christmas cards, and any and all food supplies used for the homemade gifts we make as well as the treats we make for our own family! Not a very big budget for a family of 10, and if I go under, I will usually donate the other money to the church or to the Salvation Army or someone else in need. I am saddened I cannot do all of these things this year, but we can help in other ways.<br /><br />How do you keep things simple for Christmas? How do you save money? When there are financial burdens and stress, it seems to make other things seem worse as well. However, God is so good to us! He continues to provide for our every need in ways I cannot even begin to describe. All I know is to serve HIM and just love him. I LOVE the verse "<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px;">Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice." Philippians 4:4 The other day while I was washing dishes, I was really feeling sorry for myself and our family. I was also missing my mom and wishing for her to comfort me and remind me everything is going to be alright, to just keep pressing forward. Then, Philippians&nbsp;4:4 came to my heart! I began singing the song&nbsp; "Rejoice in the Lord Alway and again I say rejoice....Rejoice Rejoice and again I say Rejoice!" I just turned on some wonderful hymns and began singing and praising the Lord! My blue feelings soon left, and I was feeling encouraged and ready to tackle anything again. Tell them about the battle David had with Goliath while he as still a shepherd boy. (Read I Samuel 17:1-9, 40, 45-50) The giant came to fight God’s people and everyone was afraid of Him except David. David knew that God’s spirit was with him and would take care of him. He didn’t take a gun but a small slingshot and with one stone Goliath and was hit and fell over dead. He is very pleased when we read our Bibles because the Bible is like a lamp to us. It shows us how to live and stay close to God. Long ago there was a boy named Josiah who became the king when he was only 8 years old. His father had been a wicked king and had made the people stop loving God and start worshipping idols. The people had even forgotten they had a Bible! Josiah wanted to serve God. One day Josiah sent some men to church to clean it up because the people had not been to church in a long time. They found the church in a mess, but they also found an old scroll. When Josiah opened the scroll he realized that it was God’s Bible that had been lost for a long time! Wouldn’t that be terrible to lose our Bible and not have it to read? He read that God would punish the people if they worshipped idols and not God. After the people heard this, they were sorry for their sins! They told God they would serve Him and would follow HIs Laws found in the Book. We have been having wonderful, inexpensive meals! I have gotten our&nbsp;grocery budget back down to be about $80 per week. There is at least one week in the month where things are a little more as much as $150. We are eating close to the same things each week, or at least the same ingredients, but I am changing up the recipes. Pinterest is great for looking up recipes as is the Taste of Home Website. The other night, I had leftover pulled pork, and I thought, what can I do with it! I looked up on Pinterest, "recipes using leftover pulled pork" and I found tons of recipes! Now, I had to decide which one I wanted to use. I found one for Pulled Pork Rigatoni. It turned out delicious! Also, if you have a Kroger card and got a recent freebie Friday of the chorizo, you may be wondering what to do with it too. It is only 9 ounces, and not much for a family of 10 (and we usually have at least 2-3 extras for every meal, and sometimes more). Anyway, I found a recipe on Pinterest&nbsp;using it. Each</a>&nbsp;year we Celebrate Christmas we take time each day to have a devotional time and learn about the stories in the Bible which lead to Jesus’ Birth. Each week, I will post the devotions for the week. Some people call it a Jesse Tree and others call it Advent.</span><br /><strong><em><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What is the Advent Jesse Tree?</span></em></strong><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I had never heard of The Jesse Tree until I married my husband. When my mother-in-law asked me if I wanted to do a Jesse Tree with the children, I had no idea what she was talking about! Even though I was a Christian and came from a Christian home, we did not focus on Jesus when I was a child! It was ALL about Santa and presents. We did have a Christmas play at church and we did do things for others, but our focus was not on the birth as it is in my home today. When I told my mother-in-law I had never heard of a Jesse Tree, she made me a copy of the devotional book and gave me the box of ornaments my husband and his brothers and sister used when they were children celebrating Christmas each year. We have been doing the Jesse Tree or a modified version for about 10 years now! My children love it and beg to do it each year!</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The word Advent means “coming” and refers to the coming of Jesus. The Advent Jesse Tree emphasizes HIS coming in the flesh at Bethlehem now more than 2000 years ago. It tells the story of God’s redemptive plan for the world through 25 symbols of the Old and New Testament. The symbols trace the heritage and lineage of Jesus from the beginning of Creation. Each symbol is explained with scriptures, stories, songs, etc. We also choose ornaments which coincide with the symbols given for each story. Some of the ornaments are purchased and some are handmade. Ask children to name some bad things. Ask children if they know how bad things got into God’s beautiful world. Tell them it was because of sin and read the story in Genesis 3 of the First Sin. You may have to explain to younger children that sin is not doing what God wants you to do. Ask if they know who Satan is. One of his names is the Devil. Explain how Satan hates God and wants everyone else to hate God too. Explain how Satan set out to make Adam and Eve disobey God. Show symbol and ask if they know how Satan deceived them. Explain the story of how Eve took of the fruit God had commanded her not to touch and how she shared with Adam. Discuss how Adam and Eve disobeyed God which caused them to be sinners. Explain how they were sent out of the garden and would eventually die.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The only way to get back to God was to take sin away. God found a way for us to come back to him through Jesus. Jesus would come to take our sin away and bring us back to God. There were many people who did not love God. God was very unhappy. Read Story of Noah and explain how God decided to destroy the world with a great flood. He used Noah who was the only man who followed God’s ways to build an ark. Everyone had a chance to live on the ark, but only Noah and his family were saved. Ask if they think they should be punished if they sin and read Romans 6:23. Remind children of the promise God made to Noah and tell them God keeps his promise. Talk about how God asked Abraham to take Isaac to a mountain and kill him. Emphasize Abraham’s trust in God and God providing a lamb in place of Isaac.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">ASK children: Do you know who our lamb is? (Jesus) Read John 1:29 again. Talk about how Jesus had NO sin at all, but he placed our sins on Himself and died for us!
