This Saturday, January 28, St. Louis is welcoming soldiers back from Iraq with a parade and resource marketplace.

I love the slogan – “It’s about people, not politics”. What a great way to include our kids in supporting the troops!

St. Charles Festival of Ice: Saturday

As I type this, freezing rain is coming down outside. We are definitely getting some “winter” here in St. Louis, and Ice Carnivals are a fun part of that. This Saturday is the annual Fete de Glace (Festival of Ice) in St. Charles.

Here’s what you need to know:

100-200 blocks of North Main Street in St. Charles
Professional ice carvers will be competing from 9-3
Team ice carving competition from 9:30-12
Individual ice carving competition from 12:30-3:00

We took a mini-vacation with friends last weekend and ate out a lot. While it was nice to have the break from preparing and cleaning up meals, it was a reminder of how expensive and generally less-healthy it is to eat at restaurants! This week we’re back to eating mostly at home, and since I have these posts to encourage me to be a bit more creative, we’re trying a couple of new recipes. I’ll let you know if any of them turns out to be stellar.

None of us was too fond of the perch last week, but we’re glad we are branching out and trying new variations of seafood. The Spicy Blackbean Soup was still too spicy, even though I left out the jalepeno and hot sauce; we must just have really tame tastes around here!
