Living up to your own promotions and crediting dates should not be all that difficult.

Here are a few examples of what I'm waiting on:

United Airlines Mile Plus Visa Referral: Many of you asked me to refer you to the Untied Mileage plus Visa card where you would get 30,000 miles after first use and I would get 15,000 for the referral. That is a great benefit, that costs the new card member nothing and rewards me for sending in the referral. It is one of the main ways I get compensated for the work on the blog.

Sarah from my hometown had fantastic followup with me indicating that she wanted a referral, applied using my referral info, got approved, used her card and got her miles for first use. I have not been as lucky. My phone call to United and Chase took me into telephone hell with one person sending me to another person who actually sent me back to the first person's supervisor. The time for crediting is past and no miles for the frugal guy.

If you took advantage of my referral offer for the Chase United Mileage Plus credit card and made it all the way through and got your points, will you drop me a note at ingy104@gmail.com

Hilton Surpass Card This one really bothers me as Amex is usually perfect in customer service. I upgraded in July, used the card and have an email from Amex that I indeed would get the 30,000 Honors points that are above and beyond the original 10K I got with the Hilton Amex card. I have it in writing. Last I looked it is November and I used the card in July. It is supposed to be an automated system that will post my points. Nothing yet. Update and now after 12 + weeks without a point, they want me to call them to straighten it out. Crazy makers one and all.

Bank Direct AA Miles I was supposed to get a 5,000 mile AA bonus for a direct deposit of 3 consecutive months. The good news here is they actually care and returned my email with a phone call. The representative asked two quick questions about the source of my direct deposit and said it would be handled. He then followed up with an email confirmation. I like these guys. If you have extra cash laying around earning little or no interest, let me refer you to their mileage checking account which pays 100 miles per $1000 in deposits per month. I had a significant amount of cash laying around between selling our house in Michigan and buying in South Carolina. In four months I added 75,000 miles to my AA account. Non taxable event as well.

Some providers are good and some just don't seem to care. When I finally got the supervisor on from United Mileage Plus, I ran into somebody that cared and I think, repeat think, it will be handled.

But why we have to go through this grief, in this computerized age is beyond this simple mind.

Register for the promo (if required)
Do the deal, whatever that means
Award the points.

This is not rocket science is it?

Continental Airlines 100 Miles and 80 Hawaiian Miles

Use Promo code 57071 at Continental.com for 100 miles for reviewing the new Double Holiday miles promotion.

Every 100 miles counts

Hawaiian Airlines 80 miles or $80 ecert

I fly Hawaiian when on the islands but don't know much about the program. I just can't understand that thinking.

If you belong to a group or know of one that may be interested in learning the twelve proven methods we travel so cheaply, please let me know. No?

Absolutely YES apply if your credit score will stand it. I don't care if you ever fly BA in your life. Look at the trade bait you gain for the $75 annual fee. But really, it is an exceptional offer and add in $30K in spend for the companion ticket and this is a Wow offer.

Here is the link

I hope are long time readers and rookies alike are starting to see the importance of keeping a good credit rating and score. Then using your credit to take advantage of great offers when they come around.

I hate to preach but I can't stress enough the judicious use of your credit and credit inquiries for cards that truly offer a great value.

South Carolina appears to be an Equifax state for Chase. Do you know your primary credit reporting agency for Chase for your home state? Remember creditboards.com then log in then go to the creditpulls database forum.

It is not only the rich that fly first class and see the world. The average Joe can as well if he/she takes care of business and protects his/her credit rating as one of your most important assests.

Right now, before you apply for this card that will give you 100,000 miles with a measly $2000 spend, ask yourself this question:

Do I know my credit score? If not, you sure should. And you should also be glad that you did not indiscriminately apply for every card available and rack up credit inquiries for a minuscule 10,000 Marriott points or 8 Southwest airline credits. Save your credit for big winners.

Do you get my drift?

There are three ads on the right hand column of the blog for a free credit report and credit score if you cancel within the trial period. Yes, I get a few pennies when you use the ad, but more importantly, you know where you stand, and should continue to do so, as long as you want to see the world at prices we all can afford.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Frugaltravelguy/~3/FMHoS3L92Ws/chase-british-airways-card-yes-no.html" title="The Chase British Airways Card Yes ? It appeared Josh was in position to get his first Starwood Preferred Guest card.

At 24 years of age, we struggled to get Josh his first card but finally got him in a Citi AA card about one year ago. He was able to churn two more Citi cards but was still gun shy of applying for the SPG card, as it was our first attempted card and we got a denial the first time through.

This time we checked Josh's credit score beforehand (745 up from 650 in one year) and the number of inquiries on his report (under 6) before applying for the SPG card. Credit scores are free, if you use the blog ads on the right hand column of the blog, and cancel within the trial period.

Based on the info we saw on his report I suggested we apply and did. To our surprise Josh was denied the SPG card based on their (AMEX's) mystical scoring system and his supposed lack of credit.

Time for Dad in law to step to the rescue with a Reconsideration letter. I've written about them before.

If you don't like the results of a credit decision you can easily ask for reconsideration. Just send back a well worded letter to the address on your denial and restate your case. I didn't give Amex any new information they didn't have on Josh's application, I just stated it in real positive terms.

Josh and Shannon are both employed as professionals. They have never been late on a payment. They do not over use their credit and yes, agreed they have limited credit, but all good. I made sure that Amex knew that I knew his credit score and stated it in the letter. (I wrote the letter for Josh in his first person)

Here is what it looked like:

To: Blah Blah Blah

RE: Credit Card Reconsideration Request

To Whom it May Concern:

I was surprised to receive an online denial of my recent SPG Amex card application reference # 123456987654.

I am asking you to reconsider your decision based on the following facts:

My wife and I are both employed full time as professionals and have an annual income in excess of $___________.

Although our past credit is limited, you can see from our credit report, we have never missed a payment or been late. I know, as I checked my credit score just before applying for your card to insure it's accuracy. I note the current credit score is 745 which is better than over 55% of the public and is considered good credit by the credit reporting agency.

We are not heavy users of credit and never plan to be, but have heard from many sources that your card is the best rewards card on the market today, and we believe we are responsible credit risks and deserve a chance with your card.

We do not need a large credit limit and would be happy with a small credit line at first to prove to you our reliability.

Although I am not including our most recent paystubs, I can send them to you if you need them.

I look forward to your reconsideration and receipt of my new Starwood Preferred Guest Amex card.

Respectfully

Josh Xxxxxxx

No new information for them , but just restated the case, and Josh was approved for the SPG card.

Unless the reason for denial is a hard and fast rule like: "you have submitted multiple applications within a given time frame, "

every denial letter is worth a reconsideration letter.

If your reason for denial is too many inquires, state the above facts and a similar statement:

" yes, I have applied for recent credit cards, but note that there is no increase in my credit activity or balances. I am a very conservative borrower and use my credit selectively and judicially. I am looking for the right credit card. That is why I applied for your card"

If the reason is too high of balances on your current cards, pay down the balance with a balance transfer to a biz card which does not show on your personal report or pay it down with another means and use this:

"In the past I did have a higher balance, but as you can see by the provided new balance, I have brought my debt back to under 50% of my available credit as suggested by many credit professionals (maybe you can say 35%) And note, at no time was I ever late with a payment."

Late payment in the past, give the following truthful reason:

"I acknowledge a past delinquent payment during a hard time in my past, but you will note in the last xxxx months or years, I have returned to timely payments of my credit. The unusual circumstances of the past are over. No lender has ever lost money on me as they have always received payment"

Bankruptcy, same as above, but with less frequent positive results, unless more time since the incident and you must provide additional details and documentation of your renewed credit abilities.

Collection requires documentation of satisfaction in most cases.

"I did have a medical collection in the past which has now been cleared. The primary reason for the collection was the delay in processing insurance claims or workers comp claims and the long drawn out process of medical reimbursement and payment. I am sure, you too, have faced the high cost of medical treatment and lenghty delays in insurance payments and reimbursement"

Landlord issue could be lousy paying roommate, lousy housing conditions contested what ever the truth was, but emphasize that the problem is now over, the cause corrected and you are back on your feet as evidenced by your current credit repayment history.

It only costs you 44 cents for the stamp and a few minutes of your time to restate your case, and the positive reasons for reconsideration. Always tell the truth and emphasize the positive sides of your reasoning.

I think in many cases the borderline decisions are now approved, as you have taken the effort and shown the initiative that indicates your credit is as important to you as it is to the credit card provider.

I'm glad Josh has his SPG card. We all should have one, that play this crazy travel game. I'm glad my reconsideration letter got the job done, and hope the tips above will help some of you as well.

Rick

Mistake Rate Do it NOW Barton Creek Resort and Spa $23 per night

Excellent Resort and Spa at $23 per night Austin Texas, as of 10 AM Eastern. The saga continues.

Us Airways Purchase and Transfer Bonus

The double bonus works well for couples trades.

Suppose I have 50K US miles that I now transfer to Katy for 1 cent per mile, plus .075 excise tax plus $30 processing fee. At the end of the transaction Katy has 100,000 US miles and I have none. Total gain is 50,000 miles.

Now if Katy in turn transfers 50K of her US miles to me,pays the fees and goodies, her account drops back to 50,000 miles and I get my original 50K back plus 50K more.

The gain is 100,000 miles on the two transfers and the cost is slightly over $1100. Not a bad way to pad your accounts at a little over 1 cent per mile.

Here is the link

Note: It won't work for accounts under 10 days old, but who cares. The promo runs til the end of the year.

Gary of the View from the Wing Blog Posts a Fantastic British Airways Credit Card Offer.

The credit is all Gary's for posting this offer and Wes for alerting me.

100,000 Mile Signup Bonus for British Airways Visa, and it Gets Better From There

A couple weeks back I posted the amazing new British Airways Visa proposition - 1.25 miles per dollar but more importantly a free companion award redemption voucher for spending $30,000 on the card in a year.Well, it gets better. Much better.

I don’t usually reply to press release/pitch emails that I get, but I just got in my email box.

The signup bonus on the Chase co-branded British Airways Visa is going to be 100,000 miles: 50,000 BA Miles after first purchase, and 50,000 more miles after spending $2,000 on the card within three months. Wow.

Spend 30,000 miles on the card and you’l go from zero to 137,500 BA miles and have a free companion redemption voucher good for a second person traveling in the same class of service. That’s just incredible. I genuinely don’t remember the last time I was blown away by a credit card offer.

I don’t have a link to the offer yet, though details of the two-for-one voucher are available. Stay tuned!

Good News for Private Mailbox Addresses and the US Mint

Strange title? Not really when you think of all of us buying US Mint coins that are now limited by the $500 per address, per president limit.

Cozy up to the local Private mailbox company that has a physical address then separate box numbers. Since I have a fraud alert on my credit report they've always had to make a verifciation call to make sure it's me. This morning I called in to check the application status and it was denied. The CSR advised me the new policy was you could only apply for a American Airlines related card every 12 months based on the date of your last appliction. She said I could call back in a couple of months and see if there had been program changes as the bank was continuing to review their policies."

Several readers have reported the same info over the weekend and Monday.

If this is indeed new policy, we are all in trouble. This does not feel good to me.

Please report in with your recent experience

The US Mint is Sending Out Letters CAUTION

Here is a letter the US Mint had circulated to some if it's heavier purchasers of $1 Direct Ship Coins: My comments are below the letter.

"October 27, 2009

Dear Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Customer:

The Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program was developed to make $1 coins readily available to the American public at no additional cost. Indeed, the United States Mint is the only place to obtain Native American $1 Coins at this time. The intent of the program is to encourage use of the $1 coins in ordinary day-to-day cash transactions. Increased usage of $1 coins in commerce saves the nation money due to the coin's 100% recyclable and durability - it lasts for decades.

However, it has come to our attention that some customers are not using the program as intended. For example, a small number of customers are repeatedly ordering large quantities of $1 coins to acquire points on credit card plans, then turning the coins in to their banks. This type of activity is not in the spirit of the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program and is costing the government money in processing, handling, and postage for these orders.

Please note that the United States Mint is monitoring Direct Ship transactions. If an abusive ordering pattern exists, we will no longer fulfill future orders.

We are pleased that the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program has been a great success, with over 100 million $1 coins issued to date. We hope that all future purchases will honor the intent of the program to encourage robust circulation of $1 coins.

If you have questions about the program, please contact the United States Mint's Office of $1 Coin Programs at (202) 354-7603.

Sincerely,
The United States Mint"

First off, it only took them over one year to realize the issue???? That is our government for you.

Second I never registered with the Mint. I always log in a a guest when making a purchase. I have not had any problems with orders. Will this save me??? I don't know, but I'm still receiving my coins and have not received The Letter

As with any mileage producing program, greed is always the killer of the deal. I take that back, stupidity, runs a close second.

I can't make a judgement on how to draw the line on greedy ( I'm into 6 figures of coins myself). Greed is for each individual person to determine. The guy that reserved 40+ weekends at the La Quinta Resort and Spa at $40 per night, that was greedy and killed that deal.

And stupid is easily explained by using the telephone to answer your own unique and special circumstances re: the deal. For example:

"I've got my tickets booked on this mistake fare (which happens to still be live) but I have a hang nail and need to get my first class upgrade NOW. I'll call the mistake provider now. I know others may be trying to book the deal, but I have a hang nail."

Bullshit. Try to think of others for just one second.

In my eyes, greed is gray, but being stupid is black and white. You are, or you are not stupid. Stupid greedy people kill deals quickly. I'd better step off the soapbox now.

Now Going Forward

The more you order, the more you risk shut down. I don't know the number of coin orders that is OK. Nobody does.

You will want to use different addresses for delivery. (I have an arrangement with my private post office drop off spot). When a heavy box comes in, they look for the name on the shipment. ( I can't always remember what my box number is??? I may miss the number by one or two digits every so often.)

Don't register future orders with the Mint. If you are afraid to order as a guest, don't play the game or, at least accept the fact it will be easy for the Mint to monitor your purchases.

Use a different credit card each time, for a while anyway. It may not have been a key before, but I'm guessing it might start to be now. A free mile or point in some program is better than no points in any. Switch it up a bit. This is pure speculation on my part but I'm now using 4 cards instead of one to place my orders.

Will These Suggestions Save You?

I honestly have no idea. But I know that they are logical, not stupid moves that may keep you in the free miles and points.

Good luck, and if you get the letter, let me know what you were doing order size, registration wise, frequency, same credit card, multiple cards etc, so maybe we can help some of your fellow frugal travellers avoid, the letter.

8 Credit Signup and Double Rapid Rewards Credit or Miles when staying at Priority Club Hotels

Rapid Rewards Members get double Rapid Rewards credit when they register and stay at any hotel within the Priority Club Rewards Family of Brands.

With more than 4,300 hotels worldwide, it's never been easier to earn bonus credits. This is the first time in the two year history of the blog I have had an issue. With the help of Rene I did a complete check of my site by using three separate scanning systems.

The blog is clean. At the present moment the address frugaltravelguy.blogspot.com is working and the address frugaltravelguy.com is still not working properly. Reset your bookmarks or favorites to the blogspot address.

Unfortunately I had to remove my links lists as a precaution. I will be reinstalling them as I am comfortable with each one individually.

What a PITA this has been. Makes me want to walk next time :) Just kidding

Spring Fling to Eastern Europe

My son Andrew is my best travel agent and the only one I'll ever need. The kid (27) has been everywhere.

Katy and I called him last week for an itinerary suggestion for next spring in Eastern Europe. Here is his recommendation:

Dubrovnik Croatia 5-6 night
Ljubljana, Slovenia 3 nights
Budapest Hungary 4 nights
Prague Czech Republic 4 nights
Krakow Poland 4 nights
Berlin Germany 5 nights

He has suggested we spend at least one day in each area out in the country so as to not get cityitis which can sometimes leave you without a true feeling for the country.

It sounds like an exciting itinerary and I'm looking for any recent experiences you may have or sights you have seen in these areas. It is all new ground for Katy and I. You'll note we are starting at the south end and moving northward hopefully with the spring or early summer weather.

I've got the hotel search started and have 4 Hiltons, 1 Best Western and a Sheraton on the short list.

The flights will either be with the last of my United vouchers or an American Airlines Business class award.

Train travel between locals seems to be the order of the day. I can't wait to start the planning.

Oh, I guess I already have.

Thoughts and comments appreciated.

The Blog is Two Years Old

And I have had so much fun. Not only sharing the deals, but hearing of your successes, meeting you in far away places and seeing the world at prices we can all afford. This has been a fantastic collective effort.

Thank you all for your participation

The Best Weekly Email Subscription Around .

Latest Spyware Update and Story

Latest Update at 7 PM Eastern Time Quoting from Google Webmaster Tools:

"Status of the latest badware review for this site: A review for this site has finished. I can't tell you how many emails I have sent to readers telling them I did all I could and we just had to wait.

Why would anybody do that stuff? As usual, we will look to our feedback channels as issues pop up (especially here on FlyerTalk), and will do our best to correct them quickly. For those of you who want to keep up on today’s festivities, be sure to follow us on Twitter.

Information about our Star Alliance joining ceremony webcast and other good stuff will be tweeted throughout the day. Now, for the stuff we couldn't talk much about... until now. I’ll do my best to touch on the highlights. Here goes…

Mileage Earning

The mileage earning charts for our new Star Alliance partners are now posted on continental.com. Shouldn’t be any big surprises here. In addition, you can now add frequent traveler numbers of our fellow Star Alliance members for new and existing bookings.

Reward Redemptions Lots of updates on this front. Here are the highlights.

New Online Reward Charts… at last. You’ve waited long enough (especially you sbm12 and eagle92), now take it in. Our new Interactive Reward Charts are ready for you. Enjoy!

Online reward redemption. As many of you know, we have a goal to have as many of our partners available online for reward booking, and in the coming year, you’re going to see a lot of improvements on this front. In the mean time, we have our starting lineup of partners that may be redeemed online, in addition to Continental. They are: Copa Airlines (including Aero Republica), United Airlines, US Airways, Air Canada, SAS Scandinavian, TAP Portugal, LOT Polish Airlines, Air China, Blue1, plus inter-island add-ons operated by Hawaiian Airlines and Island Air. With these partners in place, you should see plenty of green on the reward calendars. Stay tuned for further expansion!

Reward bookings for all other partners, as well as three-cabin First Class rewards, will need to be booked over the phone. We look forward to adding online booking for these rewards in the coming year.

Three partners not yet ready for redemption. There are three Star Alliance members that we will not have redemption capability on day one. They are: SWISS, EgyptAir and Shanghai Airlines. We expect SWISS and EgyptAir to be available for reward redemption by early/mid-November. Shanghai Airlines will likely take longer.

Qantas partnership to end. Many of you saw this coming, and the date has been set . Continental’s OnePass partnership with Qantas will end on December 17, 2009. After this date, OnePass reward redemption and mileage earning on Qantas will no longer be offered.

Expanded First and Business Class SaverPass availability for Platinum members. Continental Platinum Elite members will now have access to expanded SaverPass inventory for First, BusinessFirst, and International Business Class on Continental flights. Previously, this benefit only included BusinessFirst itineraries. Now it applies to all front cabin itineraries on Continental-operated flights.

Star Alliance Upgrade Awards. We’re pleased to introduce Star Alliance Upgrade Awards. While our OnePass Upgrade Rewards are a better value for travel on Continental and Copa, our new Star Alliance Upgrade Awards give you an option to redeem miles for upgrades on 16 of our fellow Star Alliance members. Please note that upgrade amounts are per-segment (not per one-way) and in most cases, upgrades awards are only valid in conjunction with Y and B class fares. The Star Alliance Upgrade Award Chart PDF will be posted on our Interactive Reward Charts page shortly. For more information and online redemption, go to our new Star Alliance Upgrade Awards page.

Lounge AccessOur Presidents Club and Star Alliance Gold members have quite a bit to look forward to...

Expanded lounge access for Presidents Club members. Presidents Club members and up to two guests will now have access to United Airlines Red Carpet Clubs and US Airways Clubs without any same-day ticket requirement. In addition, members will have access to hundreds of lounges operated by Star Alliance members when departing on a Star Aliance flight. I hope you’ll agree, this is a major improvement.

Lounge access for Star Alliance Gold members. As mentioned before, our OnePass Platinum and Gold Elite members are considered Star Alliance Gold, which among other benefits, gives access to most Star Alliance member lounges (including contract lounge locations) when departing on a same-day international Star Alliance itinerary. There are over 800 lounges in all. Have at it! That's it for now. Thanks for your patience while we complete this transition, and we hope you’ll enjoy this new chapter in Continental’s history. If all you spend is this 5K in miles, it must be on a ticket for yourself.

I am not a wound up about BMI as I have been in the past as I'm afraid that Lufthansa will take them over, but you should get the miles by joining here

You never know when you'll be able to use them.

Continental is a Star Alliance Member Tomorrow

Although I am not impressed with their coach product, I believe the addition to the Star Alliance is huge. Mor eroutes, more options and more deals to be had. I'm a big winner as I can now fly non stop to the New York market (Newark) and earn miles on the Alliance. From there, the world is at my feet.

Welcome to all Continental Flyers.

A Terrific Analysis of When to Spend Your Hilton Points

Ric Garrido of the Loyalty Travel Blog has done a three part series on how he determines when to use his Hilton points and when to pay cash.

Ric is a specialist in hotel redemption's and especially in the higher end hotels, and he knows a decent value for his points.

Part #3

Part #2

Part #1

Ric's basic premise is: if you are receiving $7 in value for every 1,000 Hilton Honors points, you are getting an excellent value for your points. His math correlates with my feeling that Hilton Honors points are worth .7 cents each to me, as that is the rate at which I will redeem my Hilton Honors points.

And if you follow his analysis further, you will see some of the best redemption values are at the lower end of the category scale.

If there is a way you can bookmark this page or better yet, Ric's 3 page spread, it will serve you well in the future when deciding: Do I pay Cash? or Use my Points?

Restaurant.com 80% Off Code .

TREATS is the coupon code for 80% off until 10/31/09

The Mint Game Changes Temporarily

Friday afternoon the US Mint removed the Native American coins from their website on the direct shipment page. This time, it was not backordered but calls to the Mint indicate they are sold out.

Rumors are flying as to what happened. Some think the big Disney order bought all the balance (which may be partly true). I don't think the game is over, just changing for the balance of the year.

The coin program is supposedly in effect until 2016. New Native American coin designs are scheduled for next year and my guess is they are sold out of this design. I think the Native American coins will be back next January if not sooner.

The question is will we still be buying them with $0.00 shipping charges. As a taxpayer, one would hope they would smarten up, but remember, I'm talking about our government and they can do some pretty stupid stuff for a very long time. And for those of you ready to take a shot, I mean both Republicans and Democrats.

For now, I'll be ordering Presidential coins from all my addresses :) I'm sure my bank will be more receptive to receiving smaller quanities and coins the public actually wants.

Churning Citicards? Bookings made before that date will be at the old rates. but if you change the stay after Jan 15th, you'll pay more.

Here is the new award chart

And here is the new Frequently Asked Questions Page

The new levels assigned each hotel will be published in December of 2009 but be assured we did not win here. some of these increases equal a 25% devaluation of your Hilton Honors points. I have calculated their value at .7 cents each. It looks like time to reevaluate that number.

This is sad news for me as I have been working the US Mint for AA miles and now have more than enough for our flights to Europe for next spring. The balance of my AA miles were going to be converted into Hilton Honors points. I know this is not the most efficient means of using the AA miles, but my main goal was the lifetime AA Platinum status which I will get. I just hate to take the hit on hotel redemption's now.

Now it takes hauling an extra box of coins for a free nights stay at a Hilton. A category 5 hotel now takes, 35,000 Hilton Honors points or 17,500 AA miles. That equates to about 6 boxes per night when you consider the SPG bonus on 20K redemption's.

I can't believe what I just wrote? Hotel costs are no longer in $$$ but now in the number of US Mint coin boxes I need to haul.

Sick, Sick Sick. but Frugal as Well.

Speaking of Hilton

I got an email from a Hilton Diamond. He said he found a free night in his account. When he called the Diamond desk. they said it was because of the recent point change and a show of appreciation for his business.

Check your email and SPAM

Here is Your Chance for 15,000 to 30,000 or More Delta Miles

I've written about the Delta Suntrust deal several times over the past few weeks. Basically you open a new Suntrust bank account, get their debit card and earn 15K in Delta Miles with the first signature based use.. They also have a Business card for those of you with businesses that also has a 15K bonus.

Suntrust is located in the Southeast states, but my local branch manager is willing to help all US residents with the Delta Skymiles promotion.

The Hilton Head Island branch manager for Suntrust Bank is Heather Fludd and her partner is Kris Kampschror. If you only have one computer than you could use Firefox, Internet Explorer, and or several other browsers. Being frugal it is the Mustang convertible and Segway as our current means of transportation.

Weekends seem to offer the best rates and it appears that is Friday Saturday and Sunday only. But at a penny per mile, I'm sure I'll rent a car or two.

Check out your city and the promotion here

PS: Reports are that non medallion members are receiving their miles as well.

Will You Please Consider These American Airlines Miles for the Susan G Komen Cancer Fund

I try not to ask for things from readers other than advice or outcomes, but this time I'll ask you to at least consider this Miles for the Cure plea from the Susan G Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer and American Airlines. You will receive 5 American Airline miles per $ donated.

I know it makes no sense to pay 20 cents per mile for AA miles, but in this case the point is helping others.

I made my donation. Today the disclosures and signature card arrived with an account number. Couldn't get a Business account though; needed physical address in an offer state (transferred to different call center/office).

Try the deal and report in. I wish I had not already gotten this card in the distant past as this is indeed a nice combo. Chase cards are typically not churnable, so be sure this is your first time for this card.

A Great, Funny Human Reader Story

This is one of my favorite emails I have ever gotten. It shows the power of the written word, our own human frailties and our ability to laugh at ourselves.

To the author, I offer my heartfelt thanks for allowing me to share your story.

Hey, I just wanted to share with you a CITI card application experience and see if I could get some help/advice on what I did wrong.

So I wanted to do the whole apply for as many of the AA cards at once as I could thing. I remembered reading your posts about it and you had said it was best to do them all at once like right at the same time. Maybe I took that too literally or did something wrong or its a cookies thing with firefox, I dunno. But I wanted to go for all the apps.

When I did it for some reason the visa personal app was not working, so I went for 4 apps. The per/bus MC's the per. amex, and bus. visa.

I wanted to do them all at the "same time" I figured if their computer was doing them all at once it would not see the other apps. logical right? So I bring up all 4 apps. I fill out the info on each one. Once that is done, I hit the button at the bottom 1 after the other on all 4. I had 4 tabs open on firefox. They all process at the same time and I get to the review the info screen, which I should have paid more attention to, maybe I would have caught the problem then. But I was in such a hurry to get them processed I just hit the next button on each all 1 after the other and CITI was processing all 4 apps at the "same time" so I'm thinking awesome.

So back on the 1st tab, 1st one comes back, no decision. This was for the per. MC. It's got Application ID and a phone # if I want to call in for an immediate decision. I'm thinking no biggie, I'm sure I will get approved. I move on to the next tab, supposed to be for the bus. MC well I notice the picture at the corner is of the personal MC !? and then I look at the application ID and its the same ID as the personal in the other tab !!!! so I'm like SHIT WTF!? Then I look at the other 2 tabs all the same thing! They all show picture of the personal MC and all show the same App ID!

So somehow the 1st tab and app just took over and the other 3 never went though! Like I said I dunno if its some kinda cookies thing?

Do you use firefox? Do you turn cookies off ? So now I'm all upset and in a panic and have no idea what happened or what to do.

I'm like I better get another app in, so I try the personal AMEX but get an error when I submit it, something about can't be processed. So at that point I just gave up and said screw it, the 1 app for the MC per is enough. I did get approved for it a couple days later and I just got the card in the mail today. But overall the whole thing was a huge disappointment. I have excellent credit and was expecting to get at least 2 or 3 approvals and whole lotta miles.

So any idea where I went wrong or what happened? Did I just take the whole"do the apps at once" thing too far? Do you just fill out all the apps and then just submit 1 at a time, waiting for a decision before doing the next?and then hitting the next and then so on ??? I'm just wondering how I had 4 apps for 4 different cards and somehow they all merged into the 1st one. I dunno, thought I would share my experience and see if you had any advise for me. Thanks again for all the hard work you do though.

I read every day!
thanks,

We have emailed one another since this email and our reader is cool. I learned that when I say "all at once" I should have said: "one right after another"

He will get them next time.

Thanks again.

Fantastic New Amex Card Offering 15,000 Membership Rewards Points and NO First Year Fee

Report on the New United Unlimited Upgrade System

Plane Pull Team 2nd Place of 9 Teams

The long time bloggers seemed anxious to jump on the negative aspects of the changes. I'm taking more of a wait and see attitude.

Of course my decision could be based on my advancing age and supposed wisdom that comes with it, or the fact that I live in a small market where I am one of few United 1K members. I will always be upgraded on my first leg to either ORD or IAD as long as the RJ's have a first class cabin.

I like the fact that I have now have a shot at every domestic flight, where under the old system, I was only good for 20% of the miles I fly with e500's. And the 8 CR1's I earn did not cover the balance of my flying.

And personally, Premium Service means nothing to me. I avoid New York like the plague, so no skin off my nose.

The answers will come when as a 1K I'm scheduled on an A319 or A 320 with limited First Class seats. Will the 1K that bought a more expensive ticket, and has his wife along for the free companion upgrade, swallow up two of the limited seats before I have a chance?

Only time will tell for me. I'll weigh in about next July or August.

Now just make the Systemwides good on any fare and let's get on with life.

Warning From American Express

Several readers have received warnings from American Express about buying coins from the US Mint. Here is a copy of an email I received:

"Hi Rick,

I got a call from American Express this morning and asked me not to purchase any $1 coins from US Mint and deposit them in my bank accounts going forward. They said it is like a loan and they are not in the business of handing out loans. They do not care if I pay off my balance every month or how long I have been a customer. According to them, this is a warning."

Be very careful with Amex cards and the Mint. If you are going to continue, use the card for other purchases as well and for your own good, try not to cross 50% of your credit limit at any time with your card. Just a sugggestion, but I'd hate to see this disappear with all the miles and points we are earning.

No Guarantees Here But You May get United Premier

This link in a fatwallet thread is to an offer for United Premier status after one round trip. Promo code MPS219.

It does require a higher fare class, but I'm sure some enterprising frugal traeller can find a qualifying fare where this will make sense.

Remember the T and C indicate that it is only valid for those that got the email or direct mail. In other words a TARGETTED promo. Try it if you'd like and let us know, but only if you have to buy the qualifying fare anyhow.

The deal is good until December 15th.

Terms and Conditions

1. Offer valid only for original recipients of a direct mail or e-mail invitation to this offer.

2. Registration is required by December 12, 2009, at United.com/offer/mps219.

3. Registration for offer does not guarantee elite status.

4. To earn Premier status through this offer, registered members must purchase and complete one paid, qualifying roundtrip on United® or United Express® to any destination worldwide before the offer end date. Circle trips and open jaw itineraries do qualify.

5. Eligible classes of service: United First (F, A, P), United Business (C, D, Z) and select United Economy (Y, B, M, H).

6. To qualify for the offer, flights must be posted to the Mileage Plus account by the end of the offer period.

7. Elite status will be reflected on the account 3-5 days after completing qualifying activity.

8. E-Ticket® purchase is required.

9. For tickets purchased in the U.S.: Tickets purchased through United Reservations are subject to a $25 ticketing fee and tickets purchased at airport ticket counters are subject to a $30 ticketing fee. Fees are subject to change without notice.

10. Offer not valid on government fares.

11. Offer not combinable with other non-combinable offers.

12. Passenger must be a member of United's Mileage Plus frequent flyer program for travel to qualify for this offer. Flights must be credited to the Mileage Plus account in order to qualify.

13. Valid on United and United Express, and not on United-marketed code-share flights operated by other carriers.

14. The Mileage Plus program, including accruals, awards and bonus miles offers, is subject to change without notice. Taxes and fees related to award travel are the responsibility of the passenger. United and Mileage Plus are registered service marks.
