MedlinePlus is a site with extensive consumer health and patient education information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources (not to be confused with MEDLINE, the medical article database). They have provided a video to help educate users of their services. See the following 8-minute tour.

They have updated their RSS feed system so that subscribers can follow health topics, such as celiac disease or lung cancer. The previous general interest categories still exist as well. For further information please go to the following page: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/rss.html

Florida Electronic Library Virtual Reference News

The Florida Electronic Library is a gateway to select Internet resources that offers access to comprehensive, accurate, and reliable information. The library is upgrading its current resources and will have some new resources available. The following is a list of new resources that may be of interest to the Maguire Medical Library community.

Charles R. Mathews Papers on Medicare Implementation

In July 2010, the Florida State University College of Medicine received a donation of a unique, complete personal conference notebook of the June 15, 1966 Presidential Meeting on Medicare Implementation and personal papers of Dr. Charles R. Mathews. This exhibit documents the creation of Medicare with a display of materials from Charles R. Mathews, M.D., when he attended the meeting. The exhibit also includes selections of historic photos and documents from the FSU Claude Pepper Library.

A reception for the exhibit with Dr. Mathews, on December 15, 2010, at 10 a.m. in the FSU College of Medicine atrium, features speakers John P. Fogarty, M.D., Dean of the College of Medicine; Ken Brummel-Smith, M.D., Charlotte Edwards Maguire Professor and Chair, Department of Geriatrics; Julia Zimmerman, M.Ln., Dean of University Libraries; Jill Quadagno, Ph.D., Mildred and Claude Pepper Eminent Scholar, Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy; and Charles R. Mathews, M.D., Participant, Presidential Meeting on Medicare Implementation.

If At Fudge You Don't Succeed...

Last Friday the FSU College of Medicine held its much-anticipated annual fudge contest, now in its third consecutive year. Contestants were asked to bring in their best prepared fudge, supplying 6 pieces for judging and 1-2 pounds for People's Choice judging. The judging was based on taste, texture, creativity, originality, and the judge's personal opinion. People's Choice was based on how many tickets were bought for any given fudge entry and proceeds went to FSU Cares.

This year the College of Medicine raised $1,658 in combined sales from the auction, ticket sales, dance contribution, and sales from the "judge's fudge," (Carolyn Klatt's)--twice the amount of last year. A special thanks to all who participated and congratulations to the winners:

1st Place People's Choice and 1st Place Judge's Prize- Katie Longardener (Orange Dreamsicle)

2nd Place People's Choice- Andre Aubrey (coffee)

2nd Place Judge's Prize- Rhonda Collins (root beer float)

Library Resource Lunch-and-Learn

Brought to you by the Maguire Medical Library, library resource sessions are informal forums for learning, refreshing, and/or sharing what you know about your library’s resources. The sessions are meant to be casual discussions during lunchtime (from 12-12:45 p.m.), so participants are welcome to bring their lunch and eat as they learn and share tips and hints on library essentials.

Library Solicits Feedback on New Website

Most of our users know the library's new website has been live for approximately 2 weeks. New features of the website include

A clickable rollover list of our core medical resources (the MedResource List tab at the top right of each page).
A tabbed box of different search engines (in the center, right side of the homepage) that provides ready access to the FSU online catalog, PubMed, Google Scholar, medical e-books, medical e-journals, and a multi-search engine (used to keyword search for medical e-books and/or patient education materials).
Four boxes at the bottom of each page that have links to library services, library resources, clinical tools, and academic/research resources for easy navigation.

We look forward to improving our new site's functionality and access to our online resources. If you find any features or links that are not working or need help navigating the new page, please send any questions, suggestions, and other feedback you have to our Head of Web Services, Suzanne Nagy at suzanne.nagy@med.fsu.edu. MedlinePlus New Design

The MedlinePlus site has just been redesigned. Look out for:

A Videos & Cool Tools page that makes multimedia content searchable and easier to find.
A Share button on all health topic pages and interactive tutorials to share links to MedlinePlus on your social networks.
A medical dictionary search box on the English homepage for medical term quick reference.
A Search Cloud Widget, located on the homepage and widgets page, where you will see ways to embed MedlinePlus content in your own blogs, personalized homepages, and other sites.

New Requirement for Complying with NIH Public Access Policy Using My NCBI

Beginning July 23, 2010, program directors and principal investigators (PD/PIs) must use My NCBI’s “My Bibliography” tool to manage their professional bibliographies. They will no longer be able to enter citations manually into eRA Commons as a method for complying with the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Public Access Policy.

In an effort to reduce manual entry of citations and increase the quality of data, eRA Commons has partnered with the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to link NCBI’s personal online tool, “My NCBI,” to eRA Commons. My NCBI offers an online portal called “My Bibliography,” which allows users to maintain and manage a list of all their authored works, such as journal articles, manuscripts accepted for publication, books, and book chapters.

As of April 2010, linking a Commons account to a new or existing My NCBI account allows references saved in My Bibliography to automatically appear in users’ Commons accounts. An additional benefit of this integration includes the ability for grantees to easily track compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy using a simple color-coded key in My Bibliography. Please see the National Library of Medicine Technical Bulletin for more information on this new feature.

Users can log in to My NCBI and access My Bibliography from eRA Commons, or they can log in directly to My NCBI using their Commons username and password.

According to NIH, required actions for PD/PIs include the following:

If not already established, PD/PIs must establish a My NCBI account to gain access to My Bibliography.
My NCBI accounts must be linked to eRA Commons accounts.
As of July 23, 2010, Commons will no longer support manual entry of citations. PD/PIs will no longer be able to type or copy and paste citation data into Commons and must enter new citations into their My NCBI accounts.
As of October 22, Commons will no longer display citations that a PI has manually entered into Commons. All citations previously entered manually into Commons will be removed from the Commons system. Therefore, these citations must be added to My Bibliography so that they will continue to appear in Commons and can be associated with future annual progress reports.

Modified PubMed® Advanced Search Builder

The PubMed Search Builder section of the Advanced Search page will soon be updated to provide users with more cohesive search-building options.

On the PubMed Advanced Search page, users will see a streamlined search box just above the Search Builder and Search History sections of the page.

An "Add to Search Box" button will be added to clearly indicate that terms in the Search Builder box should be added to the main search box before executing the query.

The "AND," "OR," and "NOT" options are now selected by a pull-down menu. Terms entered in the Search Builder search box will be added with the default Boolean operator AND unless users choose OR or NOT from the pull-down menu, before clicking the "Add to Search Box" button. If both the search box and Search Builder box include terms, the system will combine the terms from both locations in the search results.

The Advanced Search page sections may be shown or hidden using the triangular collapse button located on the right-side of each section's label.

Sign in to My NCBI With Your Partner Organization Account

My NCBI now allows users to sign in via a partner organization's account. My NCBI users may use the same username and password of their account from a partner organization to navigate securely between that site and My NCBI. Partner organizations (as of now) include the following research organizations and commercial Web sites: eRA Commons (extramural principal investigators, grantees or applicants), NIH (employees, intramural scientists, and Manuscript Submission System), and UKPMC (Funders Group grantees). More to be added, including Google.

On the My NCBI sign in page, click on "See more sign in options for My NCBI partner organizations."

To sign in to My NCBI with a partner organization's account you must first link the accounts. To do this select the organization you are affiliated with. You will be linked to the partner organization's login page where you should sign in. Then, link to your existing My NCBI account or create a new My NCBI account to link your organization account to.

Once the accounts are linked, you will be able to sign in to My NCBI using your partner organization's account information and access both accounts at the same time. In My NCBI, your linked accounts will be listed under "Common Preferences." To un-link an account, click on "Linked Accounts" under Common Preferences and click the "x" icon next to the account you wish to remove.
