I tried relegating personal work to Mondays, when I sort of have time to myself. It doesn't work.<br /><br /><br /><br />Photography, for me anyways, has always been about finding the subject through exploration of an idea- not waiting for the subjects to find me. So for now, I'm discontinuing this experiment. Trying to travel, concentrate, and organize all in ONE day is impossible for me. In other words, I just do not have the smarts for such an endeavor.<br /><br />I'm often very envious of other photographers, getting to travel extensively and always awash in new experiences and places. They always have fresh eyes, simply because what they are seeing is always changing. Whatever makes their photography unique can be applied across hugely different subject matters. They have the time and tenacity to wander and see the world. I do not know how poor photographers manage to do this, they never talk about it- the work just seems to magically appear.... maybe I should ask them how it's done.<br /><br />Almost all of my photographs, out of necessity, have been made close to home. I so far haven't managed to be away for weeks at a time, or afford film/processing on top of all of the cost involved with being on the road. It's how I'd prefer to do things, especially living in the south- not seeing bits and pieces.. Now that I am actually working all the time, and not just waiting for work to come in, it's become even more difficult to make the photographs that I need to make. I get anxious and frustrated about it constantly, and for what reason? I'm only making the photographs for myself, after all!<br /><br /><br />So, I'll be out my backdoor making photographs whenever I can. I'll be in the darkroom printing things I like whenever I can. I'll be looking at others work and ordering books when I can. Mostly because I have no idea what I'm looking for yet. I'm just out everywhere looking at rural Alabama and mostly not liking what I see. Sure, there's lots of things here that interest me, but they are so far down on my list of things I'd like to be shooting that I can't really get excited about it. It probably is possible to produce work you like, even when it's made in a place you do not find engaging. How incorrect was I!? Things had slowed down at the gig here in Birmingham and it seemed that I would have the time to really focus on something, ANYTHING that wasn't related to food photography in general. That's when the floodgates opened, and any chance of starting new work went right out the window. If I wasn't shooting for work, I was processing the finals nearly every single day. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely happy to have the work, but when the weekends rolled around, I would be mentally exhausted, but constantly chiding myself; why aren't you shooting, why aren't you shooting?! This litany starts to kick your ass after awhile- so I decided to, for the most part, not accept work on Mondays so that I could start new work. Normally, the idea of scheduling 'creative time' would have me curled into the fetal position in full mental lockdown, but at this moment in time I have little choice but to do it this way.<br /><br /><br />So I was out today for the first time in what felt like years, just looking. Looking at everything, absorbing what I could, and mostly feeling overwhelmed.
