He and bassist Nicky Wire talk about The Uses of Literacy, an exhibition curated by Deller which included artwork made by their fans, and Unconvention, a subsequent exhibition staged in Cardiff of the band’s own visual influences, featuring work by Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, and Pablo Picasso.

Hi there, does anyone know if it's possible or have anyone tried to give a present to Nicky at a gig? How would I go about giving a gift to him? I am going to see them in Belgium during their International Treasures European Tour and would really love to give him a little bag of "his favourite things" :) <3

Hey there,

I gave Nicky a bouquet of flowers after a gig in 2009 (gig review here) - I just waited with a group of other fans after the gig was over and he hung out and signed stuff. At other gigs, I also gave flowers to Adam Green before the gig (I got there very early) and to Carl Barat (couldn’t give them to him by hand when I got there, so I had the clerk at Amobea take them to him backstage - when I met him later I asked him if he got the flowers and he gave me success!). My usual tips would be to try to get there reaaallly early and scope out where their tour bus is, give them to someone at the venue who will deliver the present to him (make sure you include your own name on a tag so he’ll know who its from!), or wait around after the gig is over if you know where the tour bus is at. Nicky has been very receptive to gifts in the past from others that I know of. Good luck!

I’m not an FD admin, so I have no idea - the mods have to do it manually and sometimes things may change if there’s been spammy accounts and whatnot. I think it took a few weeks for mine to get activated back in 2009 if I remember rightly. Don’t worry, it will go through!

Another portrait I took of Nicky Wire from last year for all you Manics fans out there… It’s just a pretty simple head shot really - and nowhere near as intimate or interesting as the one where he’s holding his guitar that I had printed in National Treasures, he doesn’t give much away with the shades - but there is something about it I quite like.
