Dave Grohl, one of the greatest rock drummers alive, is from Warren, Ohio.

He’s played drums for Scream, Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, and done session work for everyone from The Prodigy to Nine Inch Nails. Oh, yeah… He also sings, plays guitar, piano and bass and fronts his own band, the multi-grammy winning Foo Fighters.

He’s a pretty big fucking deal, so it’s no surprise that Warren gave him a key to the city last summer and even named an alley after him.

Now, Dave’s a solid dude, so he not only showed up and played some of his songs, but he also joined a local band in playing some Led Zeppelin, but wait… That’s just a drop in Dave’s awesomeness bucket.

When Dave found out that a couple Australian miners asked to hear some Foo Fighters while they were trapped in the mine, he sent them an email and invited them to a free show and some beers. Then, he wrote a song about it and put it on an album.

When Dave found out that some guy who took his girlfriend on their first date to a Foo Fighters concert wanted to propose to her at another Foo Fighters concert, Dave stopped the show and helped him do it.

When Dave saw a kid getting squished at the front of a Them Crooked Vultures show, he stopped the show and helped him and his dad backstage, so they could watch the show right next to him and John Paul Jones. There’s even a video for that too.

Like I said, Dave’s a solid dude.

Let’s have some underrated pop music from Cincinnati.

First, there was the Raisins, but they broke up and a couple of the guys joined forces with some dude from across the River called Adrian Belew to form the Bears, but then they broke up and the Psychodots formed. Since then, the guys have backed each other up on their individual solo projects, including Belew’s, and all of the bands have reunited at various points.

We haven’t been this confused, since we tried to figure out how many bands Jim Macpherson has played in, so we’ll have to get around to those other projects ~~later in the week~~ some other time.

Here the boys are as the Psychodots playing the Bears’ hit “Fear is Never Boring”.

One of the best things about working on Fuck Yeah Ohio is digging around the interwebs and learning that folks you never knew were from Ohio are. Take Maynard James Keenan, for example. He’s from Ravenna.

Maynard, as if you didn’t know, is the lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. He’s also apparently a bit of a gourmand, owning a vineyard, winery, produce market, etc. in Arizona.

Today, I talked to a grown man who admitted to crying over Andyman’s death.

The fine folks who print the Fuck Yeah Ohio shirts, also print the shirt you see above. They’re donating all procedes of sales to Andyman’s family. You can also donate directly to the Andy Davis Memorial Fund at any Huntington bank or at CD101.

Andyman’s public rememberance has been moved to the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion outdors. Doors open at 6pm. The presentation starts at 7pm. It’s free and all ages are welcome. UPDATE: There’s a Facebook page for the event.

Columbus has lost a giant.

We were going to wait to talk about Andyman, until the Andyman-a-thon came around again, but we are absolutely gutted and can think of nothing else.

John Andrew “Andyman” Davis passed away while on vacation with his family this last weekend. Our thoughts are with his family and, frankly, with the rest of the city, because Andyman wasn’t just a DJ at our favorite independent radio station or the co-founder of our favorite hole-in-the-wall bar. He was an important part of city life and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more generous person anywhere. As the programming director at CD101, he held a vital role in keeping independent radio and music alive and, with the Andyman-a-thon, he raised more money for underprivileged children, via the CD101 For the Kids charity than we can even estimate (over $42,000 in 2009 alone).

We only met Andyman a couple times, but his influence is unavoidable in Columbus. When we did, he made us question wether or not we were doing enough with our lives. Seriously, he even donated his hair to charity. That’s the kind of guy he was. We miss him already.

Columbus band Your Favorite Assassin is calling it a day, which is bittersweet, but we’ve been awesome for nearly 7 years or so now and this show will be amazing. We’re gonna blow it out in style with our friends in The Electric Grandmother.

This flyer, designed by Derek Stewart, is also awesome. Little known fact: Derek gave us the name, wrote lyrics for a couple of our songs and created a ton of art for us.

Here’s Jonathan Winters on fellow Ohioan Dean Martin’s show.

This master improvisational comic was born in Bellbrook, Ohio (obligatory Wikipedia link).

Columbus, Ohio Ranked Second Manliest City in US:

The fine folks at COMBOS did a study that looked into things like manly jobs, manly pastimes, and manly snacking and found that Columbus, Ohio was the butchest city around, second only to Charlotte, North Carolina. Now, we’re not ones to begrudge Charlotte their win. It’s a lovely town, but we’re sure to knock them off the throne with our giant balls next year.

Four other Ohio cities were ranked as follows: 15th - Cleveland, 20th - Cincinnati, 26th - Toledo, and 34th Dayton.
