Moved your site to self hosting or from Blogspot’s to Wordpress’s online communities?

If so consider placing a redirect notice or final entry.  After relocating a site successfully users of these communities usually delete former posts, directing prior and future readers with a link.  The benefits of doing this?  Just minutes ago I came across a blog where the above stared at me, and the FMBer was featured on the portal page still garnering votes.

Not doing so causes two things to be lost to bloggers:

• Traffic, because I wrote this and couldn’t get to your site.
• Votes, because when I search through the FMB listing I know what I want…and you missed my vote.

While FMB accounts are permanently tied in to an account and members don’t want to lose valuable vote ‘rep’, providing a redirect or link at your old site can continue to lead readers and votes to your new home online.  It also provides a known solid link from a source you control if SEO, SERP, and PR are part of your game.  Everybody wins.

Nielsen just announced their latest ‘Social Media Report’ – it makes for some really interesting reading, the key points were as follows:-

1. Social networks and blogs continue to dominate Americans time online and now account for nearly a quarter of total time spent on the internet

2. Nearly 4 in 5 active internet users visit social networks and blogs

3. 41% of blogger users have a household income of over $75k

4. Close to 40% of social media users access social media content from their social media phone

5. 25% of Wordpress visitors have a bachelor’s degree

6. 53% of active adult social network users follow a brand

7. 32% of active adult social network users follows a celebrity

If 53% of adult social network users follow a brand, apart from awareness, what benefits are the brands getting by being followed, I’d like to see more written about actual sales – do any of you have any experiences you’d like to share in the comments?

That’s exactly what the Live Below the Line campaign is asking people to do this May, and we want to give you the chance to join in and blog about it.

£1 a day is the UK equivalent of the extreme poverty line – below which some 1.4 billion on our planet live every day.

Having been around extreme poverty in Africa, I honestly thought that I knew what it meant to live in extreme poverty. I’d seen it in the rural communities of Swaziland and through the times of hyper-inflation in Zimbabwe.

Given all of this, I have to admit I didn’t think I would gain anything personally from the experience. But, the thing that surprised me the most during those 5 days was that I was suddenly overwhelmed with a real sense of understanding. Five days of having so many choices removed from my life. Having to sit and think about how I could eat from £5, making tough decisions: do I buy two oranges or some slices of bread? It was like a light bulb went on, and to my complete surprise I suddenly felt like I wanted to call some of my friends in Swaziland and Zimbabwe and tell them that I actually get it now.

That’s why we’re so excited to share the opportunity to Live Below the Line with the Fuelmyblog community – to put the challenge out to you to spend a day or five on just £1 a day, and get the word out there about it.

Do you use your computer as a tool or a toy?

Generally speaking I use mine as a tool. There’s ‘stuff’ I want to do ….. writing, processing photos, talking rubbish to friends, hammering in nails [not to be recommended of course but I couldn’t find my pin hammer], ironing [Powerbooks almost get hot enough] and for storing music.

I use a dedicated game console for playing games. I did try and use the laptop as a Frisbee once ……. it was rubbish.

Of course it could be argued that some of the ‘stuff’ I do is just playing [according to someone who is sitting next to me]. She’s probably right

We all know that if we left click on the mouse we can highlight a word/phrase/link and then right click and cut or copy it. We can then paste it onto a document or in a web browser – wherever we want that information to end up.

I always assumed that the information was stored in the computer but after experimenting with swapping over my mouse between my two computers I’ve discovered it’s actually stored in the mouse! …… interesting n’est-ce pas?
